Hey, it's the details that I love...

The television camera always focuses on the baseball. And even when you're at the ball park, one instinctively follows the baseball, wherever it goes. It's not always easy to pay attention to the other people on the field.

But that's where the fun is!

"Let's say there are base runners on first and third, with one out or none out. The batter pops the ball up into foul territory behind the plate but deep - close to the fence and on the first base.... the catcher goes back for the ball. Everybody sees that, but not everybody sees that the shortstop has moved directly to second base and the second baseman has moved directly to a spot well inside second base but on a straight line between the ball and the bag. Every infielder knows this. It's automatic..."

Why?

I'm not really sure what you're getting at, but on a ball hit to the right side the 2B becomes the cutoff man. The defense has to be able to nail the runners straying off the base so the 3B and 1B stay put and the 2B cuts in front of the bag so he can intercept a throw 3/4 of the way down should the runners attempt a double tag up where they'll sacrifice the guy going to 2nd to bring the runner home from 3rd.

You effectively see a version of this every time there's runners on the corners. The catcher will come out and give one of three signs in the event the guy on first goes - that he's going to throw straight to 3rd, straight through to 2nd, or a ball he wants cut off in between home and 2nd and returned immediately to him.

Yup. If there's no cutoff man, the runner on first breaks for second. If the catcher makes the long throw, the runner on third can basically walk home...

This post should be re-titled Deets - in order to stay hip and relevant with today's youth.  ;D

A couple of interesting links...

Pat Gillick reminisces about the David Cone deal of 1992.  And the Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place for the first time since 1992?

The Pirates are a great story this year.  No idea how they are leading the division with that roster - although that kid in CF is pretty good.  Ironically, Juan Rivera would've been a really nice fit there platooning with Overbay at 1st.  I hope they go for it at the trade deadline, there are some pretty gaping holes in the lineup that could be addressed pretty affordably.
