This will make it so much easier for me, trust me.

I'll throw down the gauntlet, totally off the top of my head. This is based entirely in the unscientific method.

This would be a nightmare tiebreaker in the NL - I have 4 teams tied for the new playoff playin game, with a divisional tiebreaker first (do those still count as game 163 - can you lose the division and the wildcard in game 163?) that upgrades 1 to a divisional winner. Three-way ties - how are they settled?

Three-way ties - how are they settled?

I'm guessing there would be a tiebreaker game for the division championship and then the 3-way scenario kicks in. Unless the tiebreaker scenarios are changed, the three tied teams are ranked via head-to-head records, then the best team gets to choose A, B or C, then the second team chooses between the remaining two. A hosts B, and then the winner hosts C.

Doubt that adds up to the right number of games, but I couldn't be bothered with trying. I think there will be 2-3 really abysmal teams, a bunch of middling 70-80 win teams and I think the Dodgers really come alive with all the distraction gone and the potential for acquisitions at the deadline. And yes, I am predicting a 3 way playoff between the Yanks, Rangers and Jays for the final 2 playoff spots.

WIth respect to the fate of the 2012 Mets, Alex, like the cheese, stands alone. All the forecasters above think that not only will the Mets not finish first, but rather that they will finish last.

Could this be 1969 all over again? Has Alex managed to tap into the conscience of the universe in a way that no one else could?

Mike Green - Thursday, March 29 2012 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#253436) #
the conscience of the universe

Whoa, Chuck.  It's only Thursday.  Furthermore, wouldn't the conscience of the universe be more concerned with the Pirates than the Mets right now?  Ah, never mind.

If Richard's scenario comes true, by my count we'd have 7 playoff games before the Wild Card Showdown starts.

Here's hoping.

AL:
Angels v. Texas for AL West Champion
Boston v. Yankees for Second Wild Card
Boston/New York v. LAA/Texas as the Wild Card Showdown

NL:
San Francisco v. Arizona for NL West Champion
Two games between Cincinnati, St. Louis and Milwaukee for the NL Central Champion
Two games between the two NL Central losers, Atlanta and Miami to determine the two NL Wild Cards
Winner of Game 1 v. Winner of Game 2 in NL Wild Card Showdown

No poster so far has the Jays at under .500. Only one has the Jays finishing exactly at .500.
Mike Green - Friday, March 30 2012 @ 05:45 PM EDT (#253507) #
...and it should be noted that while we as a group have been mild homers, every year there have usually been  a few people who think that the club will play below .500.
Mick Doherty - Friday, March 30 2012 @ 07:28 PM EDT (#253512) #

Mike, I'm no homer, but per Thomas' note, I will be the first.

  • Best team in baseball? Rangers and Yankees.
  • Worst team in baseball? Astros just "ahead" of the Orioles, mets, Cubs and Mariners.
  • And yes, this is a written confirmation that I am totally baffled, even flummoxed by what to do with the '12 NL West.
Alex Obal - Friday, March 30 2012 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#253514) #
Nice, Mick, that's exactly what my first stab at the NL West looked like. I was going to hit 'submit' with five 81s until I decided I would definitely pick the Giants to win the division. So I wimped out.

I believe this is the math.

162x30=4860 So half are wins 2430.

This means that each persons total should be 2430.

Anders, should I interpret that to mean the Royals will win 80389 games?

The Mets have a range of 61 to 90 predicted wins. I think that must be the widest.
