Seven games on the schedule on Wednesday, the affiliates won four and lost three. KC Hobson homered behind good pitching from Joel Pineiro in the New Hampshire win. Dunedin split a double header with no hitting in a game one loss and lots of hits in the game two win. Bluefield scored late for a walk off win. Jacob Brentz had a good start. The GCL Jays won a pitching duel 1-0, just like the big club.

Daniel Norris didn't like facing Russ Canzler and he lost, despite nine punch-outs. Vancouver had bad defense and bad baserunning in their loss. lansing are on their all star break.

Lehigh Valley 5 Buffalo 4

Daniel Norris met his nemesis and his name is Russ Canzler. In the second inning Canzler doubled and later stole home to put the Pigs up 1-0. Then in the fourth Norris loaded the bases with one out. He struck out one hitter to make it two outs but then Canzler came up and tripled to clear the bases and make it 4-0. Norris went six innings and racked up nine K's. He only walked one but he did give up eight hits and four runs. In the post game report Norris was a little frustrated to be working from behind in the count too much for his liking.

The Bisons were down 5-0 and then scored all their runs in the eighth inning. Two came on an error. The Bisons had just seven hits and five of them came from Caleb Gindl with two and Alex Hassan with three. Devon Travis was 0-3 with a walk and is hitting .143 in AAA. This probably means he will hit for the Jays as these things usually reverse.

Portland 1 New Hampshire 3

New Hampshire trailed 1-0 into the seventh, Joel Pineiro had another excellent start, he pitched 7 innings plus, and gave up one run on eight hits. Blake McFarland came on in the eighth with the tying run on third and no one out. McFarland struck out the side, then struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth. McFarland has a straight over the top delivery and features an average fastball and a 12-6 curveball. None of his pitches stand out but his results are excellent. He should get a look in AAA before the end of the season.

KC Hobson hit a two run home run in the seventh to give New Hampshire a 2-1 lead. Shane Opitz singled in Jon Berti in the eighth to make it 3-1.

Dunedin 1 Tampa 5 - Game 1

The Jays had just 4 hits, all singles. Luis Santos started and pitched 4.2 innings. He was charged with 5 runs on 8 hits.

Dunedin 7 Tampa 5 - Game 2

The first four hitters reached, Roemen Fields walked, Dickie Thon doubled, JD Davis singled in a run, LB Dantzler singled in another. A ground ball and a sac fly made it 4-0. The Jays tacked on single runs in each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. Dawel Lugo and Martin Medina each had two hits.

Jeremy Gabryszwski started and went five innings and gave up 4 runs. Justin Shafer and Wil Browning pitched an inning each in relief.

Lansing - All star break

Vancouver 3 Tri-City 6

Four errors by the Canadians led to three unearned runs, the margin of defeat. Evan Smith pitched into the fifth and was partially responsible for fi.ve runs, two were unearned. He only notched one K.

Some poor baserunning also cost the Canadians. In the second inning Kevin Garcia doubled in Christian Vazquez but he was thrown out at third base for the third out. In the eighth Juan Kelly singled in Gabriel Cenas but Earl Burl was thrown out at home to end the inning. In the ninth Juan Tejada singled in a run leaving runners at first and third with one out. But Tejada was picked off for the second out.

Elizabethton 4 Bluefield 5

a walk off win for the jays thanks to two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to erase a 5-1 deficit. In the eighth, following a walk and a hit batter, Christian Williams and Matt Morgan each singled in runs. In the ninth Rodrigo Orozco singled, moved up on a sacrifice, and was brought home when Carl Wise singled. The Elizabethton pitcher then lost the zone and walked three with Williams getting the game winning RBI on the walk. Williams was 2-4 with 2 RBI and the walk. Orozco was3-5 and Wise and Deiferson Barreto each had two hits.

Jaoc Brentz started and was excellent, five shutout innings, three hits, no walks and four K's. Grayson Huffman was hit around, in his inning he gave up some loud hits and four runs. Maybe it was rust?

GCL Jays 1 GCL Yankees 0

Just five hits for the Jays and three for the Yankees. A trio of pitchers held down the Yankees. Denis Diaz went 3.2, Mike Estevez 2.1 and Ryan Cook 3 innings.

The Jays only run came in the third inning. Kalik May doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a sac fly. Edward Olivares led the offense with two hits.

Do you know the details on Canzler's steal of home. He's never struck me as a speed demon.
Gerry - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 09:44 AM EDT (#303737) #
It was actually a double steal, with both runners safe. I assume the Bisons threw to second and the return throw was late.

Has anyone seen McFarland this year?  The reason I ask is that, in addition to his strikeout rate being way up, his air out rate is much higher.  It's an unusual pattern of results for a 6'5" pitcher throwing 90 with a downhill plane and a 12 to 6 curve. Maybe he's now throwing 94 or something and he's using the upper half of the strike zone effectively.  Boyd went on the weighted ball program and added some zip to the fastball, and I wonder if McFarland did too.

Call Joel Piniero up!

We have so many recycled arms in this system. Why not!?

Any news on Santana lately?

Mike I have milbTV - keep meaning to watch, but rarely do. I decided to check McFarland out.

Watched his last home game and the 3 prior road games. First observation - milb announcers must pay retail for radar gun readings, only heard 4 all told. His home games TV angle is pretty bad. No radar gun readings in either his home game or the Erie game. An 88 mph FB in the Altoona game, an 80 mph change and 90 and 91 mph FB's vs New Britain.

As you said, good plane when he keeps the ball down and he did use the upper part of the zone quite a bit and quite effectively.

On the negative side, his control seemed much better than his command. He threw a ton of strikes, but a lot more of his pitches were centre cut than I was hoping to see, Trevor Story hit a rocket on one of those. Can't remember seeing one good curveball.

Santana's throwing program has been interrupted by a foot infection, apparently.

I have no idea what that means, exactly, but the fact that he's still described as being on a "throwing program" suggests he's not on anywhere close to a big-league appearance.
Mike Green - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#303749) #
Thanks, hypobole.  That sounds more like a wily pitcher who overmatches double A than one who has developed something new.  I guess he'll be promoted to Buffalo at some point and we'll see how he does there.

The Future Games rosters have been announced. Only Blue Jays representative is Jario Labourt. IMO, kind of disappointing. I would have thought Anthony Alford might get selected as well.

Been waiting for someone to comment on Jake Brenz, seems it will have to be me. May recall he was the super raw big HS arm we overslotted, along with Rowdy, in the 2013 draft. Definitely wasn't going to be a fast mover.

Came into this season with only 47.1 IP, 30 R, 38 BB's. So to have him throw 5 shutout frames without a walk was more than a pleasant surprise. Guessing it's the best game of his milb career. Maybe this ends up as an outlier or maybe he's starting to learn how to pitch rather than throw, but he should be worth keeping an eye on.
finch - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 01:37 PM EDT (#303754) #
He's definitely a high ceiling arm. He's been one that I've been watching. It's a great start to the season for him. Clinton Hollon is another arm I love in the organization.

Another note, Matt Boyd has been scratched from his start. Promotion to the Jays?
jerjapan - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 01:57 PM EDT (#303757) #
Thanks for the info on McFarland.  I assume the team sees him a big league bullpen material given his AFL stint last year?  He's got the size you like in a pitcher but I'm surprised to see his velocity is that low - we had another super tall soft tosser a few years back - mark hendrickson - although he makes McFarland's 6ft 5 seem small in comparison.  Hendrickson fashioned himself a ten year career starting at the age of 28 - keep it up Blake!

my other reliever to follow from the AA pen, Danny Barnes, has been getting hammered for the past few weeks after seeming to be fully recovered from injuries.  Gregory Infante in AAA is the last real sleeper who might pitch for the Jays this year - our veteran AAA logjam seems to have sorted itself out with West and Guillmet getting claimed.  Why hasn't Ryan Tepera pitched since getting demoted?

Mike Green - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#303761) #
Devon Travis has doubled and walked in three plate trips so far today, and Chad Jenkins threw 4 very impressive innings filling in for Boy.  The Bisons lead 5-0 in the 6th inning. Things are pretty good and getting better all the time.
Gerry - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 03:04 PM EDT (#303762) #
It's hard to be a minor league reliever all the way through the minors and then become a major league reliever. Most relievers were one time starters. While I like Danny Barnes, Arik Sikula and Blake McFarland, I cannot be optimistic because of history. Consider the Jays bullpen:

Brett Cecil, Liam Hendricks, Roberto Osuna and Todd Redmond were starters until they reached the major leagues.

Aaron Loup, Tyan Tepera and Bo Schultz were starters until A ball or AA.

Steve Delabar is an exception, he was just a starter briefly.

No question Gerry, but there are definite exceptions and the reason I'm so interested in these guys is they tend to be pretty freely available.  Look at the Orioles, Darren O'Day and Brad Brach started a handful of games between them in their minor league careers - Brach was a 42nd round pick and has established himself as a solid middle reliever - I know this is a position of minimal value, but for a 42nd rounder?  and O'Day was undrafted but has emerged as a quality late inning guy.

It's often the funky delivery guys like O'Day, or the truly dominant minor league closers (like Barnes, hopefully) but I disagree with the concept that minor league relievers are never prospects.  McFarland doesn't throw hard enough in my mind - Brach has been around 94 this year.  There's real value in fringey relievers if you are willing to search for it.

hypobole - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#303769) #
jerjapan - here's another one. Steve Geltz, the guy who set a Rays team record by retiring 32 straight hitters until Ezequiel singled off him yesterday. Pitched 241 minor league games without a start.

Interestingly, Kevin Cash gave him the first 2 starts of his career this season, though only 2 innings each time.
cybercavalier - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#303771) #
Had Hutson Street the closer been a reliever in the minor league ?
---------
AAAA guys often have a weakness - can't catch up to a big league fastball / breaking pitch, easy to get out down and away - a weakness that AAA pitchers can't always exploit but the big leaguers can adjust to and hammer on.

Bisons' Matt Hague leads the IL in .avg, .obp, and .ops. In this season, he draws more walks than striking out for the first time in a season; has he been a high striking out hitter throughout his minor league career ?

Does Hague have weakness(es) to improve on ?
Hodgie - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:21 PM EDT (#303772) #
Just curious, you aren't be any chance of relation of Hague's are you cybercavalier?
JB21 - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:29 PM EDT (#303773) #
I'm pretty sure he is Matt Hague.
cybercavalier - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:32 PM EDT (#303774) #
As the discussion is on minor league reliever or starter, searching Jays' minor league players' performances is just mouse clicks. When Hague's performance stands out among batters in the IL,  I guess that sharing this information is just as common sense as being asking if I am of relation to the player. I am not sure but carrying on a belief of sharing information about Jays' minor league players is a wishful thinking. Thanks for pointing out so I can improve next time.
jerjapan - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:36 PM EDT (#303775) #
Steve Geltz is a perfect example Hypobole, undrafted and at 5ft 10, 170 lbs., pretty darn small to be so successful.  481 Ks in 362 minor league innings is what I'm talking about though.  he's low 90s - anyone have a sense of how he does it?

Cyber, regardless of if he's related to you,  you've convinced me.  I'm pulling for Matt Hague to get a chance somewhere - he's getting on base like crazy.  then again, im always pulling for guys like this.

Gerry - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 06:39 PM EDT (#303776) #
Anthony Alford, Rowdy Tellez and Chase De Jong have been promoted to Dunedin. Justin Shafer and Boomer Collins go the other way, back to Lansing from Dunedin, with Alexis Moldonado promoted from Vancouver.

A few years ago wasn't he Jason Nix?
Mike Green - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 07:52 PM EDT (#303778) #
I like the Lansing to Dunedin promotions and that Richard Urena was not promoted.  Urena is making progress, but still has a lot of work to do on controlling the strike zone.  Let him master low A ball before moving on.

Dalton Pompey returned to the lineup tonight, after being hit in the head with a pitch, and led off with a home run.  Phew.

Nix held two seasons of over 100 K's in lower minors so Nix is not like Hague.

According to BbRef, NIx holds 3 seasons but the idea is the same.

Regradless of if Hague is traded, he can be a PTBNL in his possible trade after his probable Triple A Allstar game starting at 3B for the IL. Thank you for reading my babble if it is.

Gerry - Thursday, June 25 2015 @ 09:25 PM EDT (#303782) #

"Matt Boyd being scatched"

I think that is more likely to be a trade than a callup, IMO.
cybercavalier - Friday, June 26 2015 @ 10:15 AM EDT (#303792) #
I think that is more likely to be a trade than a callup, IMO.

If Jays is trading for K-Rod, the Brewers Triple-A and Double-A teams have plenty players whose performance history related to Jays and Canada in one way or the other:

RP Jim Henderson: Canadian closer for 1 Brewers' MLB season
2B/3B Pete Orr: veteran Canadian infielder
SP/RP Josh Roenicke (Zach Stewart played in Angels' Triple-A but now plays in South Korea)
C Robinson Diaz

Shall the Jays get all of them in the possible K-Rod trade ? Frankly, if Dickey is gone in 2016, Thole will likely be gone. Could Diaz be a backup catcher candidate if our minor league catcher talents need time ?
Ryan Day - Friday, June 26 2015 @ 11:22 AM EDT (#303796) #

I don't see why you'd push Boyd back two days for a trade. If you thought you were really close to a deal, sure, delay his start. But if you think the trade is going to take up to two days to complete, you could let him make his start and wait an extra hour or two to finalize the trade.

I hope I'm not rushing to judgement but it appears to be a rather impressive debut or at least the first two innings seems to be.
