Every Blue Jay affiliate who played lost on Wednesday except for the DSL Jays. Bluefield had the day off. Norberto Obeso went 5-5 for the DSL team and easily claimed the top performance of the night. Otherwise the affiliates lost big, no games were really close and there were few stand-out performances. Jon Harris, Angel Perdomo, Sean Reid-Foley and Jose Espada all gave up multiple runs. Reid-Foley was the best of the bunch for five innings, it was the sixth that cost him. And Perdomo did rack up seven K's. Dalton Pompey had a couple of hits, Anthony Alford hit a home run, but that's about it for good news.

Buffalo 6 Rochester 0

Phillippe Aumont couldn't throw strikes, he made 66 pitches with 29 strikes and walked six. Add in a couple of hits and the Bisons were down 4-0. Aaron Loup put on a couple of base runners then Byron Buxton doubled over Dalton Pompey's head for two runs. Ben Rowen, Ryan Tepera and Steve Delabar didn't allow a hit in the last 2.2 innings.

The Bisons had six hits, Pompey had a couple of line drive singles.

New Hampshire 6 Reading 12

Casey Lawrence runs hot and cold and Wednesday was cold. The Phils had 12 hits off him in 3.2 innings. Those hits led to 8 runs. Danny Barnes allowed three in the sixth and Blake McFarland a run in the eighth.

The Fisher Cats hit four home runs. Jorge Flores hit his second in two nights, a two run shot. Ryan Schimpf, KC Hobson and Dwight Smith hit solo shots. Hobson doubled and scored in the ninth. The Fisher Cats had eight hits and made the most of them with six runs. Hobson had two hits.

Clearwater 6 Dunedin 2

Derek Blacksher has spent the last 8 years in independent ball. The Jays needed a starter so for the first time since 2007 Blacksher, at 30 years old, pitched for an affiliate. Blacksher went five innings and did OK, four runs, two earned, seven hits, six K's. Griffin Murphy gave up his first runs of the year, two in two innings.

Dunedin scored a single run in the fourth and fifth. Derrick Loveless singled in one in the fourth. Anthony Alford homered in the fifth. That was it for the Jays, they just had six hits.

Lake County 10 Lansing 1

Sean Reid-Foley was excellent through five innings, just two ground ball singles off him. The sixth started walk, error, homer, homer as SRF hit a wall. Reid-Foley ended with three earned runs but his start was better than that. He had 10 ground balls and three fly balls. Mark Biggs and Jose Fernandez each were charged with three runs.

The Lugnuts just had four hits, one of those was a solo home run by David Harris.

Tri-City 6 Vancouver 2

The Jays prospect duo, Jon Harris and Angel Perdomo, had rough games. Harris hit his pitch limit in the second inning, in that inning a walk and three singles led to two runs. Bobby Wheatley pitched the third, a walk and a single made it 3-0. Angel Perdomo started OK in the fourth, but again, in the fifth, a lead off walk followed by a single and a sac fly made it 4-1. A two run home run in the sixth made it 6-1. Perdomo struck out 7 in three innings but walked two and had four hits off him.

Vancouver scored a run in the fourth. A strikeout, wild pitch put Sean Hurley on. Juan Kelly and Josh Reavis singled to bring in an unearned run. In the eighth Hurley doubled to drive in Ryan Hissey. Hurley was the only hitter with two hits.

Bluefield - Scheduled day off

GCL Yankees 4 GCL Jays 2

Jose Espada was not at his best. He pitched four innings and gave up three runs. In the first inning it was a solo home run. In the second an unearned run and in the third a lead off double and a single. In total Espada allowed four hits and a walk with three K's. Jose Nova went four innings and was better than Espada, one run on three hits.

The Yankee starter, Daris Vargas, struck out 12 Jays in 5.2 innings. The Jays had just five singles, Jake Thomas had two.

DSL Blue Jays 8 DSL Orioles 1

Norberto Obeso, a 20 year old from Mexico, went 5-5 with a double. Jonathan Torres, also 20 years old, went 6.1 innings, just 2 hits and 5 K's. Torres spent some time in the GCL earlier this year.

3 Stars

3rd star: KC Hobson

2nd star: Jonathan Torres

1st star: Norberto Obeso

The DSL Jays are having a very good season with a 43-26 record (.623 winning percentage).  But one thing that I noticed in the Dominican this summer is that several MLB organizations are operating two full teams in the DSL.  Among them are the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, Rangers, Mariners and Red Sox.  The Jays, by contrast, have only one team in the DSL.  I don't know if this means that the Jays are investing less in the Dominican than some other teams.  One would think that a heavy investment in the Dominican would pay big dividends for the Jays, since so many MLB players are of Dominican origin.  So I'm confused by their decision to run only one team, not two.  But perhaps there's a strategic reason that I'm not aware of.

We have 8 teams, the same number of minor league teams as the O's, Rangers, Mariners and Red Sox. They have one more in the Dominican, we have one more stateside. It's only the Rays, Astros, Yankees and Mets who have 9. Some clubs have Venezuelan teams as well. About a dozen clubs only have 7 teams total.

Thanks, hypobole.  Interesting about the Venezuelan teams.  Did not know about that.  Maybe there will be Cuban affiliates someday soon??

I'm sure all smart forward thinking organizations are digging into Cuba and seeing if there is any way to do that.

Going to need more thawing of US-Cuban relations and another Democrat president for that to come to fruition.

Also will be interesting to find out how much complicity MLB and certain teams have had with the human smuggling of Cuban talent the past few years. Can't see a lot of good will from Cuba toward MLB with what's been an ongoing issue.

Money would probably fix a lot of that ill will.
