So the final game of the season for Buffalo is meaningless.  They are #2 no matter what in AAA this year for the playoffs (Final Stretch) if they are 9-1 or 8-2.  There were just 2 teams that had them in a tie breaker - one ahead at 9-0 who will win the playoff and one far back at 4-5.  Wonder how they'll play it?  I'd give Gabriel Moreno the start behind the plate myself if he is healthy enough.  Otto Lopez obviously has to play,  There are few real prospects there though - everyone other hitter was born in 1996 or earlier.  So for the lineup go with whoever has earned a final game of the season - I suspect a few of the guys born in '89 might be at the end of the line so if they want a final game give it to them.  The game is on the road so you might as well just have fun with it.  A shame as it would've been fun if Durham had lost thus making tomorrows game matter for both AAA and the majors.

Why would the world matter for majors

And Buffalo get rained out on Sunday so that was the last minor league update of the season.

Thank you Gerry and #2 J Brumfield for your excellent work all year.

Aw, that sucks. Having the final game rained out. Been a fun year for the minors. Thanks guys for doing these as they are fun to read even if I don't always comment.

Baseball America has published the Jays instructional league roster. It includes 2021 draft picks, young players from the complex leagues and players who missed time in 2021. One of the oldest players there is 24 year old Joey Murray who missed almost all of 2021.

Thanks Gerry. Good to see this thread (prospect discussion) going strong.

I was thinking about CF prospects that can provide offense by hitting (OBP) and very good defense. In addition to that I want very high SBs. Right now Bo 25, Teoscar 12 and Biggio good when healthy. However that is not good enough for what I was thinking. I am hoping a speedster like S Taylor, Chavez Young or Dasan Brown can eventually make the team and give us 40 SBs/yr on a regular basis. I realize that the HR is king.
lexomatic - Monday, October 04 2021 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#408346) #
I would love to see Chavez Young build on his 2nd half this year, but I think he's still going to need some big improvements to even have Jonathan Davis' career. I'm a big fan, but is a long-shot. But at least improving stats going up a level to AA after a year layoff is pretty encouraging. Realistically call up AAAA defensive replacement/speedster at best. Dunno about his actual power, but he's got room to shift GB/FB a bit and still take advantage of speed.

Gabriel Moreno was the number 5 prospect in the AA Northwest League according to Baseball America. No other current Blue Jays were listed although it does seem to be a loaded league this year.

Austin Martin was number ten.
John Northey - Monday, October 04 2021 @ 09:16 PM EDT (#408362) #
Funny, Austin Martin was #19-22 for all of MLB this spring, but dropped to #10 in a single AA league. Hitting 270/414/382 will do it. 14-4 SB-CS, more often in CF than SS (sub 900 fielding percentage at SS in AA is a very bad sign, but 7 assists and 4 DP's in CF in only 46 games is damn good) but to succeed in the majors as a CF he will need to hit for a lot more power or steal a lot more bases. A singles hitter who counts on tons of walks doesn't last long normally.

I am trying to compare Martin and Groshans in as unbiased way as possible. Both had injury concerns. Neither dominated AA. In less ABs Groshans had a bit more power 2B and HR. Martin had a much better and V good bb/k rate. Groshans bb/k rate was good too but not as good.

Based on the above I give Martin a slight edge based on the bb/k rate. Going forward 1) Health is the determining factor. 2) I believe that Groshans will develop great power and his arm (strength and accuracy) at 3B has to be there. 3) Martin should also improve but the only superior to Groshans tools is Martin's speed.

2022 may provide a clearer evaluation. Will either dominate?
John Northey - Tuesday, October 05 2021 @ 05:03 PM EDT (#408396) #
bpoz: a couple of big pluses for Groshans - only 21 this year, 291/367/450 overall at SS/3B. vs Martin being 22 and hitting 270/414/382 overall at CF/SS. I'll take the 1 year and increased power vs walk based OBP anyday especially with Groshans being pure IF vs OF/IF.

Thanks for your response John N. I am getting a chuckle about the concept that power is the last thing to develop.

Maybe next year, 2022, for Groshans. 20+ Hr I hope.

For O Martinez 2 years younger maybe the power arrives in 2023 or 2024. Haha.

The AFL rosters are out and Gabriel Moreno will be there!

Spencer Horwitz and Leo Jimenez are also on the roster. It will be interesting to see how Horwitz performs after he tore up the Northwest League. The AFL is often considered to be a AA level league so it should be a step up for him. Jimenez played most of the season in Dunedin so its a double leap for him and a good test to see where he should start 2022.

On the pitching side the Jays have sent Michael Dominguez, another aggressive send. Dominguez only threw 38 innings this season so he needs work. But as he threw most of those innings for Dunedin, he will have to be sharp to succeed in the AFL.

The other Jays players are relievers, Graham Spraker, Cre Finfrock, who missed most of 2021, and Brody Rodning.

I was expecting to see Joey Murray but he must be hurt again.
Gerry - Wednesday, October 06 2021 @ 12:59 PM EDT (#408447) #
Jimenez is the youngest player on the Mesa roster and one of the youngest players in the league. Michael Dominguez is the second youngest and Moreno the fourth.

There will be five top 10 prospects in baseball in the AFL. Moreno is one of them plus Spencer Torkelson, CJ Abrams, Marco Luciano and Riley Greene.
Mike Green - Wednesday, October 06 2021 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#408448) #
Thanks, Gerry.  I'm glad to see both Jimenez and Moreno on the AFL roster.  Both of them could use the work, and (as you say) Jimenez' performance will influence the organization's decision whether to place him in high A or double A to begin 2022.

bpoz - Wednesday, October 06 2021 @ 01:37 PM EDT (#408449) #
Jimenez is young was 20 in May. In 181 ABs Avg 320, bb 54 k 36. Outstanding bb/k. No power and not elite speed. He also had a slow start. His 181 ABs compare to Hiraldo's 390 ABs.
Mike Green - Wednesday, October 06 2021 @ 01:40 PM EDT (#408450) #
And if you want to see the development of a hitter, you can check out youtube videos on Leo Jimenez.  He's a lot thicker in the lower half now, and his swing doesn't look like that of a slap hitter.  The interview in Spanish is fun too, complete with pictures of Jimenez with his grandfather.

I couldn't find anything recent of him fielding.

Minor league baseball have been announcing their all-stars as voted by league broadcasters, MILB execs and select media members.

The Jays were shutout at AAA and AA, other than Casey Candaele being voted co manager of the year.

However in high A, Spencer Horwitz and Tanner Morris were voted all-stars. Horwitz was also awarded as the top MLB prospect.

Trying to keep this thread going.

The AFL started play yesterday. Mesa lost. Don't know the box score.

5 Dunedin players made the All Stars. O Martinez, PK Morris, S Berroa, A Barger and N Paulino.

S Horwitz & L Jiminez have great bb/k rates. Now they have to face pitchers like M Gore and A Lacy.
Gerry - Thursday, October 14 2021 @ 11:20 AM EDT (#408680) #
Spencer Horwitz went 1-4 yesterday, Leo Jimenez was 0-3 with a hit by pitch.

Gabriel Moreno is still in Dunedin recovering from his thumb injury. He is still headed for the AFL but just isn't there yet.
bpoz - Thursday, October 14 2021 @ 11:39 AM EDT (#408682) #
Thanks Gerry. A Lacy started for the Saguaros. Still cannot get the box score. Eventually I will find it.

I believe org teammates get to play together but am not sure. So some of our pitchers could have pitched.
