The second half begins at the damp and moldy home of the Red Sox. There are some who think Fenway Park is quaint, but mostly it's old.

The Jays have won 7 of 10 against the Red Sox so far this season, inclusing two of three at Fenway back in April. The Bostons won the opener 2-1 after Eovaldi and Kikuchi turned the game over to the bullpens, scoring the winning run without a hit (Bichette error, groundout, sac fly.) The Jays cruised 6-1 behind Berrios the next day and held off a late Boston rally to take the finale 3-2. The Jays took three of four from Boston in Toronto at the end of April, and another two of three at the end of June. Boston's unvaccinated contingent will be available this time around.

Second baseman Trevor Story is on the IL, and LH Chris Sale will have joined him there by game time. Jeter Downs has been filling for Story - he hasn't shown much with the bat yet (hitting .201/.300/.389 in 166 games at AAA since coming over from the Dodgers in the Mookie Betts deal.) The Red Sox still have what is mostly a three man offense, with Rafael Devers, J.D. Martrinez, and Xander Bogaerts doing the heavy lifting.

Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock are back off the IL, and starters Josh Winckowski and Rich Hill are also expected back shortly. The state of Kike Hernandez' hip is a little more mysterious. In the final week before the break, Alex Cora moved Jackie Bradley back into centre field, with Jarren Duran switching to right field.

Yusei Kikuchi is making a rehab start in Buffalo tonight. It will be his first minor league game.

The Blue Jays have 69 games left, and it goes like this. The rest of July and August will be a challenge, the next 31 games in particular. More than half will be in the division, and Detroit is the only team playing below .500:

at BOS 3
STL 2
DET 4
at TBR 2
at MIN 4
at BAL 3
CLE 3
BAL 3
at NYY 4
at BOS 3

Then, it eases up a little:

LAA 3
CHC 3
at PIT 3
at BAL 3
at TEX 3

Then 9 games with Tampa Bay in two weeks:

TBR 5
BAL 3
at PHI 2
at TBR 4

And full throttle to the finish. Should be an adventure.

NYY 3
BOS 3
at BAL 3

I thought Montoyo would have been like Kevin Cash, but he wasn’t. So far Schneider has been closer to Cash. That is, gambling and taking chances.

Kikuchi walked the lead off hitter in the first. Then he walked the first two hitters in the second. Through two innings, 20 strikes, 19 balls.

It’s good that Kikuchi is in the minors, as he’s unplayable in the majors right now. The Jays will have to find another competent starter on the trade market.

Mike, keep it up. Tapia’s BABIP luck continues, none more evident than that “grand slam,” which was a fairly routine fly to deepish center lost in the lights/sky.

10 runs in 3 innings. That's how I like to open a road series.
Inside the park grand slam? I don't remember the last one.

Rumours are that neither the Yankees nor the Mets are wiling to move any of their top 3 prospects in a Soto  deal.
Padres, Giants, maybe Mariners, I think.

First game of a three game sweep at Fenway. The third game was the unforgettable comeback from a 10-0 Boston lead, with a Whitt slam off Lee Smith in the ninth and another Felix homer to win it in extras.

I have no idea why he's on the 25 man roster.

He's not on the roster to play. He's on the roster so the manager can feel safe and relaxed about using one of his catchers as the DH.

When Cleveland beat the Red Sox 27-3 in 1923, they did it without hitting a homer. They took an 8-0 lead off the starter, some guy named Curt Fullerton. Boston's next guy was Lefty O'Doul - they scored 16 runs off O'Doul, 13 of them - all unearned - in the sixth inning.

O'Doul would eventually give up pitching and make it back to the majors as an outfielder. He won a couple of batting titles, and hit .349 lifetime.

Mike Green - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 08:10 AM EDT (#417855) #
Personally, I wish that more managers would pull their starters after 4 innings in a game like that one. Pitcher wins are nonsense. The object is to help the team win the game, and all that was achieved by sending Gausman out for the 5th was an unnecessary drain on his arm in a season where you want him to play a key role in a long playoff schedule.

Kevin Cash does that.

Pitcher wins are nonsense.

Pitcher wins are nonsense, true. Unless you are a starting pitcher, or at least 90% of starting pitchers. Getting the win has been ingrained in them and for some it's a huge blow to their pride when they get pulled. Montoyo lost the clubhouse and I understand Schneider's decision even if I disagree with it.
ISLAND BOY - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 09:35 AM EDT (#417863) #
I watched every inning of this beatdown, not just because it was against the hated Red Sox and their equally hated fans, but also because it was historic. Most runs ever by a Blue Jay team and most runs ever by a Red Sox opponent. Add on Lourdes Gurriel tying Frank Catalanotto's single game hit record of 6 and it really was a crazy night.

Question: Are Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk one of the best catching tandems in team history?
Magpie - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 09:36 AM EDT (#417864) #
It would be a bigger issue if sending Gausman back out for the fifth put him past any of his established limits, for the game, or would be likely to do so for the season. He did not and he will not. He's thrown more pitches in a game this season, and numerous times over his career. He's on pace to throw fewer innings, face fewer hitters, and throw fewer pitches than he did last season. He's had bad luck with the wins and losses this season, I'm sure he appreciated an easy one.

“The Yankees just lost Michael King for the rest of the year”

That’s a big loss for them. King has been fantastic this year. And those big bullpen arms are important in the postseason.
Chuck - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 10:03 AM EDT (#417867) #
He's had bad luck with the wins and losses this season

And BABIP. His H/9 is way out of line with his peripherals leading to a big gap between his ERA and FIP.

Chuck - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 10:07 AM EDT (#417868) #
King has been fantastic this year.

With King out and Loaisiga and Chapman stinking, that bullpen has gotten awfully short. I'm sure they'll be seeking reinforcement though not every trade figures to be as successful as last year's for Holmes where they turned a career frog into a prince.

greenfrog - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 10:09 AM EDT (#417869) #
It’s interesting that King’s injury came after his FB velocity went from 91.5 (2019) to 93.1 (2020) to 94.1 (2021) to 95.9 (2022).

The Yankees lost Chad Green to TJ injury earlier this year, so their bullpen is experiencing some significant attrition.
85bluejay - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 10:51 AM EDT (#417871) #
That's the sad part - teams are "encouraging" pitchers especially BP guys to throw harder and success usually comes along with arm problems and these employees are disposable for teams.
hypobole - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 11:36 AM EDT (#417873) #
Baseball players have always been disposable. Players will risk the injury for major league success. Jordan Romano before his velocity bump was probably destined for a AAAA career if that.
Mike Green - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 11:45 AM EDT (#417874) #
Chuck, Gausman is a special BABIP case. He's got a high line drive rate (25%), and has given up a lot of hard contact, but has a low HR/FB rate. Balls that would have left the yard are now often doubles. Statcast has his expected ERA at 3.57 despite his excellent W/K data. If anything, he's been a bit lucky from that angle.

ISLAND BOY - Saturday, July 23 2022 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#417875) #
I doubt if Gausman is fully recovered from that line drive smash off his ankle. He had 10 strikeouts but there was a lot of 3-2 counts also.

In the Umpires Get No Respect side of things, home plate umpire Eddings seemed to do a decent job last night, certainly better than the last time he did a Jay's game.

Are Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk one of the best catching tandems in team history?

If we're talking as hitters, it's no contest.

Obviously we can't just add up their hitting numbers - Kirk also leads the team in DH starts. But just looking at the offensive production of the team's catchers as catchers (which includes Collins and Heineman as well), it's the best in team history by an order of magnitude. Just ten times in franchise history have the Jays' catchers produced an OPS better than the overall league OPS (it seemed the best way to rank 45 seasons) and here they are:

The 1983 combo was Whitt (93 starts) and Martinez (69 starts) - they also pinch hit for and replaced each other with regularity. Neither Kirk nor Jansen is a match for Martinez defensively (and this was the one season in his 17 year career Buck was actually a plus player as a hitter) but I think they'd both be at least comparable to Whitt.

The 1988 combo was Whitt (110 starts), Borders (33), and Butera; 2010 was Buck (104), J.Molina (51), and Arencibia (7). The 2006 team of B.Molina (98) and Zaun (59) posted a pretty nifty .789 OPS, but the league hit .776 that year.

One other thing about the whole use of starters vs. pen in last night's game. It was a perfect storm of factors favouring pen usage:

- 22 run lead after 4 and 1/2 innings
- 1st day back after the All-Star game
- 3 game series and then another day off
- Manoah starting the next day

All of the relievers should have at least one appearance this series, and appearances on Friday and Sunday for one or two would be just fine.

The issue with Eddings in the game with the White Sox were all the called strikes that were well off the plate, both inside and outside. The scorecard for that game said 25 of his 70 called strikes were no such thing. It was as if he'd been possessed by the ghost of John Hirshbeck, which is really spooky because Hirschbeck may be retired but he still walks the streets, alive and well.

Eddings was much closer to being a normal umpire last night.

Eddings was much closer to being a normal umpire last night.

Except from the 6th inning on when it was clear he wanted to go home. Lots of questionable, though obviously irrelevant, strikes. It was strange not to have the strike zone box showing last night except for a few highlights. Great way to protect an umpire with a sketchy record.

I only watched the first few innings of the all-star game but couldn't help but notice how consistently accurate the home plate umpire was, almost as if a human could do the job were his skill level high enough. I guess it was the all-star game of umpires as well.

Great AB from Kirk there bringing in the runner with a sac fly. He’s just so comfortable at the plate.

Just the second time this season Romano has come on in the eighth to Save the Game. Got a five out save against the Yankees on June 19.

"Chapman scores from first on a single. Very nice."

Seemed like an aggressive send by Rivera, but it worked out again. Realized I can't remember the last runner we had thrown out at home.

Turns out there is a good reason, besides my poor memory. 8.5 is average. Tampa and Washington lead baseball with 15 runners thrown out at home, White Sox and KC, 14. Only 4 teams less than 6. All alone in last place, the Jays with 2.

Paul D: I suspect Dante's Sr's resignation as Jays coach (it was reported in March 2022 he resigned) stemmed from the front office learning of this. If so, good on the Jays for taking action.

It sure looks like Vlad Jr made some slight mechanical adjustments over the break. Just from watching last night and the highlights from today, his hands look a bit higher in the stance and there is less movement overall (especially in the lower half) as he strides into the pitch. Forgive my terminology, as I'm no hitting guru, but the finished product just makes the swing look shorter and more "handsy."

It's a great thing in my opinion, as it looks more reminiscent of last season when he just seemed to be driving the ball in the air so effortlessly.

I might hit you, I might kill you.

Well, you can be friends with them as long as you kick them when they're down.

The 4 outs save by Romano highlights the need for another high leverage arm.
I'm not sure if they really need 2, somebody has to mop up and you need at least one guy who has options to keep the shuttle going.

Magpie - Sunday, July 24 2022 @ 07:51 AM EDT (#417919) #
Well, it's an eight man bullpen. Right now, it consists of six trustworthy pitchers - I think Richards has rejoined that group - a second lefty and a junkman.

Banda is the second lefty at the moment - I can see what they like about his arm, but he's surely out of options by now and I always assumed he was just keeping the seat warm for Saucedo. But Saucedo hasn't pitched in about two weeks and Vasquez has just gone down on a rehab assignment. Who knows.

And Beasley is the junkman, picking up odds and ends, occasional long relief. Trent Thornton's had this job, and if Kikuchi ever figures things out, either he or Max Castillo could end up in this kind of role. I don't expect to see Merryweather at all this year, and Pearson not before September (if then.) Casey Lawrence must be right at the limit for options in a season. You do need someone who can work more than one inning.

Those are the most obvious spots for upgrades, and Atkins needs to do something in the next ten days. It tells the players he believes in them, and that he's trying as well. I don't think the Jays are players in the Soto sweepstakes - the price will be too damn high - so he's most likely chasing after someone like Luis Castillo or Pablo Lopez. And bullpen help. The lineup - the eleven guys who play, the two guys who don't - looks pretty set,

Raimel Tapia and The Green Monster is playing today. Since Parasite, the line between horror and comedy has become even more blurred.  When water starts leaking in from the openings in the manual scoreboard, we'll know that we are truly getting someplace new.

I agree with Magpie about the organization's likely direction at the deadline.  I wonder what the club is going to do with Ross Stripling; I can now imagine him being better in his 30s than in his 20s.  Smart and flexible man with a repertoire.  If the Jays are going to win a few World Series in the next 7 or 8, it wouldn't hurt to have an Allie Reynolds.

Fangraphs has the Blue Jays with a 2.5% chance of winning the division.  That should be their target, obviously a difficult one but worth pursuing.

For the time being, it's a 9 man bullpen.
Richard can sub for the second lefty because of his change up.
The need is for a guy who would slot right after Romano and push everybody down.
Someone like Bass, who is now with the Marlins, ERA of 1.33, 15 HD/2BS.
Castillo can be the long relief guy, but they might have to switch him to keep him stretched.
Saucedo has 2 options, I wouldn't rush him back.

I am expecting movement on the trade front as the Aug 2 deadline approaches.

I have not really seen any extremely desperate moves by Atkins in 2020 and 2021. The 2020 trade for T Walker worked out well. We only gave up a PTBNL. Alberto Rodriguez has a chance I suppose. In 2021 the pen needed a lot of help. Atkins acquired Cimber, Richards, Soria and Hand. Tellez was a steep price but was struggling at the time and probably had an uncertain future with the Jays. Riley Adams was possibly an over pay, especially the way Hand pitched for the Jays, Soria for PTBNL ( don't know who), Cimber+Dickerson+cash from Maimi for Panik and A McInvale. Excellent trade that I don't know for sure why Miami made it. Possibly payroll reduction.

4 relievers + Berrios is desperate IMO but not extremely and should not harm the talent pool.

Cimber, Richards and Berrios are still with the team so were not rentals.

Just a note that many posters were willing to pay the price in assets (may have included Bichette, Kirk etc.) and pay the contract Francisco Lindor wanted - so far the Indians have to be very happy with that deal as both Andres Gimenez & Amed Rosario are outproducing Lindor this season and at a fraction of the cost and both have probably not reached their ceiling and of course the Indians also got 2 prospects in the deal and best of all the Mets will be paying Lindor handsomely during his decline years.

For all the complaints Tapia has been way better than Grichuk this year. Tapia has pulled his way back to 0 WAR and a 96 WRC. I think he’ll actually be above 100 for full season as things go. Grichuk is -0.7 WAR with a 77 WRC. Nice to be able to improve things and get out of that contract.

An interesting non-shame Tapia tidbit. All of the defensive metrics are very negative for him as a rightfielder over his career. DRS and Statcast are positive for him as a centerfielder and left fielder and UZR is only mildly negative. In 2020-2021, he was a positive defender overall by all three metrics as the Rockies gave him hardly any work in RF.

Magpie - Sunday, July 24 2022 @ 03:21 PM EDT (#417958) #
Berrios and Manoah are so similar in style that having them back to back isn’t ideal.

For the entire first half, they had the Kikuchi spot in the rotation between them - it also made Kirk the regular catcher for both guys. It also generally meant that the opposition would usually see just one of the two in any series.

That doesn't always work - sometimes you get a four game set, sometimes Manoah would get the first game of three and Berrios the third. And twice early on, Berrios got the first game of four and Manoah got the finale.

Manoah's two starts in a series against a team that's already faced Berrios include his very best start of the year (7 shutout IP against the Red Sox in a 1-0 win in April) and one of his worst (not that 5 IP 2 ER in a no decision is that awful. Jays eventually lost that game.)

Berrios has pitched six times against a team that saw Manoah two days earlier. He's pitched quite well three times (all no decisions, but the Jays won all three games), very badly twice (a loss and a no decision in a game the Jays won anyway) and was sort of okay the other time (and the Jays won that one, too.)

The recent offensive improvement by the Jays may have increased the trade value of a number of players (Gurriel Jr., Biggio, Tapia, Jansen). I imagine there are a lot of teams interested in Gurriel Jr. at the moment. If the Jays wanted to go the Soto route, they could certainly offer a package that meets the Nats' criteria (assuming the Nats are interested in those players).

It sure would be nice to have a better aggregator of draft signings relative to slot than BAs, with club total pool money for Rounds 1-10, and the total plus 5% which they can spend without losing a pick, and the amout spent so far.
92-93 - Sunday, July 24 2022 @ 07:56 PM EDT (#417979) #
Gurriel Jr. will become a free agent with less than 6 years of MLB service because of the contract he signed as a Cuban. He is only under control through '23. It's hard to see the Jays keeping both Lourdes and Teoscar long-term because Springer will likely need to move to a corner to finish his contract and they will need a CF.

If the Red Sox pivot because of this series they can capitalize on impending FAs in Boegarts, JD Martinez, Eovaldi, Wacha, and Vazquez and quickly retool for next year. They will have a pretty clean slate with which to work. Only Sale, Story, and Barnes are guaranteed significant money, with Devers, Verdugo, and Pivetta in arbitration.

This series sweep allows the Jays to be flexible with their plan for Kikuchi. They can a) give the starters an extra day of rest and start Castillo on Wednesday, b) call up Kikuchi for that start, or c) go back to Gausman, not needing that fifth starter until Saturday when Kikuchi can come back on regular rest after 2 rehab starts.
greenfrog - Sunday, July 24 2022 @ 08:08 PM EDT (#417980) #
There is a spectrum of approaches the Jays can take between now and Aug. 2, from "mostly stand pat" at one end (maybe add a back-end SP and a reliever or two), to "somewhat active" (add a #3/4 SP, a couple of better relievers, and a LH bat), to "extremely active" (go hard after a high-end bat like Soto or Carroll, plus a front-end SP like Castillo, plus a quality high-leverage RP or two).

There are pros and cons to each approach. I guess it depends in part how good they feel about their chances of remaining a contending team in a few years. If they think they're likely to still be good after some roster turnover, they may not want to burn as many assets in an effort to be excellent in the next year or two.
dalimon5 - Monday, July 25 2022 @ 12:26 AM EDT (#417982) #
I reference Gurriel because the latest report is that Rizzo wants some young established MLB players as well. They wouldn’t trade for Gurriel to contend, they would use him as a single major leaguer as part of the package of prospects. Then flip him in the off season.

Today the PA has to make a decision on the Int'l draft.

Our pen is not as bad as last year. Last year Romano and Mayza were the only reliable arms approaching the trade deadline I think. Add Cimber, Richards, Soria and Hand. That is all I think. Berrios helped the rotation of 2021 and going forward.

Here is my list of good and experienced relievers in the current pen. Cimber, Y Garcia, Mayza, Phelps, Richards and Romano. A strong 6 man list IMO. Max Castillo for long relief IMO. He can be optioned but was the only long reliever that has been good.

Kikuchi has to pitch much better and go deeper into games. If not that is a major weakness and Atkins cannot risk letting the season "ride on him". Ride on him means being patient with him.

2 veteran relievers would probably be the minimum to get. A big trade for a good SP is always on the table IMO especially if he can be extended like Berrios was.

Last year Atkins did not have to "work" for the Manoah addition. That is extremely good luck. None this year unless Max Castillo gets a few starts and excels.

No good luck for the pen as well. Again Max. Hatch, Lawrence, S Anderson and all others are good/very good in AAA but bad in the Majors. Matt Gage is doing well so far in the Majors.

With Cavan Biggio re-emerging and if Horwitz is passable at 2B , I wonder if Pittsburgh might be interested in a Santiago Espinal

If Horwitz was passable at 2b, I don't imagine he'd have spent his career at 1b, with occasional appearances in LF.

And if you trade Espinal, you have to add someone else who can back up 3b & SS, because neither Biggio or Horwitz are doing that.

The starter is a tough call.

Biggio and Tapia are the bench bats. There is a 14th position player in September, but you can't trade for that guy now without freeing a spot currently in use. Collins is there so Kirk can be the main DH. I don't think they change that.

Zimmer is the pitch runner/defensive sub. Seems fine to me.

Who can they pinch hit for?

With Cavan Biggio re-emerging and if Horwitz is passable at 2B , I wonder if Pittsburgh might be interested in a Santiago Espinal (whom GM Cherington would be famailar with) - David Bednar type of trade - both also have similar years of control. Wouldn't Biggio himself make more sense for the Jays to surrender at this point, rather than Espinal? I like Biggio a lot, but Espinal plays more premium positions. Not even sure I'd do that deal, but I suspect there's a great chance of a Biggio deal than an Espinal deal at this point.

Would you trade Gurriel and your top 3 prospects for Soto? Unreservedly yes. Though I don't think the Nats would actually want Gurriel as part of it.

Right, that's because the team offloading prospects rarely include an MVP type player.
If you think you have a HOF type player in you system, you don't trade him for 2 years or a similar player.

They Rays have made several deals in which they traded established players for prospects and came up on top.
The Jays did well in the Donaldson trade but not so well in the Dickie trade.

My guess is since Biggio is back to pre-2021 performance, Tapia is actually contributing offensively, and Schneider seems more willing to use both catchers at the same time, that the team will mostly stand pat on the offensive side.

It seems more likely they go out and try to acquire pitching, both in the pen and rotation. The 2023 rotation right now looks like Manoah, Gausman, Berrios, and a whole bunch of question marks. Ryu is out, Stripling is a FA, Kikuchi is an uncertainty right now, and there is nothing in AAA. I could see the Jays trading some top prospects for Castillo in a similar type of deal as Berrios to get help in 2022 as well as 2023. Although with the Yankees and Dodgers likely both in on Castillo as well, it will cost a lot.

Yes. The Jays might want to trade (say) Groshans and Zulueta for Castillo. But to win the bidding war, they might have to offer something like Groshans and Tiedemann. Which makes me think they'll look elsewhere for starting pitching.

Anthony Santander and Keegan Akin have reportedly been vaccinated as the Orioles now consider themselves to be in the wild card race.

"would you trade ... ?" ... Bichette, Kirk, Groshans & Kloffenstein for Soto then flip him with Teidemann for Ohtani, Loup & Tepera ... too much, not enough ? I haven't done any research on this outside of the spelling of players names ... as it is, my brain is a-skewing

Zack Collins is 3rd C insurance. B Zimmer is a defensive OF. They will most likely not be used too much.

Trading Biggio or Espinal weakens the line up as mentioned.

I believe in G Moreno as a C, SS, 2B and 3B. He was an infielder and is athletic. Very strong and accurate arm for C, SS and 3B. He seems to be adjusting well to ML pitching. He needs regular ABs if he is put on the ML roster. A hot hitting streak in Buffalo will make it unfair and possibly discouraging if he is not promoted.

Our depth is very impressive to me because the team is young and is good and improving offensively.

Zimmer will stay unless injured. Chavez Young can do the defensive OF job but needs everyday ABs which he will not get with the Jays.

To borrow from Bo Bichette, I can't say I disagree with this take from Jim Bowden's recent Q&A on The Athletic:

"You are given control over the Blue Jays for the next month. What moves would you make (or not make) to increase their World Series chances and window as much as possible? — Jason B.

"I would make a serious run at Juan Soto and Luis Castillo. This Blue Jays team’s window to win a World Series extends three to four years, and it’s time to go for it. Can you imagine Soto hitting between Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the next several years.? The Blue Jays need a left-handed impact bat to better balance their lineup. They also need another quality starter, and Castillo is a difference-maker. The Blue Jays’ farm system is strong at the top and deep; they have the financial and prospect resources to get one of those stars, maybe even both. It’s go time."

"I would make a serious run at Juan Soto and Luis Castillo"

As much as I would love to see this happen, I don't see how the Jays can put together a package for Soto and still have enough prospects left to land Castillo as well. Unless the Nats would be willing to reduce the number of prospects in the deal in return for the Jays taking on some of their bad contracts (Corbin or Strasburg).

Ohtani, baby.

The Jays have signed 11 of their first 12 picks in the amateur draft so far. The one remaining is their first pick, Barriera and they have a little over slot in money allotment left to use. Tucker Toman, their third pick and no.77 overall ( ranked no.35), signed for 2 million, approximately $ 1,153,000 over slot.

Ohtani would be near-perfect (near because he’s a free agent after 2023). But it sounds as if he probably won’t be traded.

Sorry, I posted on the draft signings on the wrong thread. Send me back to the minors!
