NOTES

Trenton Wallace started and struck out six in three innings. He did give up a couple of runs on four hits and two walks. Andrew Bash went three perfect innings. Dillon Tate pitched a perfect inning. That's two good appearances in a row now and he has to be getting close to a recall.

It was a big day for Joey Loperfido who went 3-4 and drove in a run. Michael Stefanic also had three hits.

Vancouver had ten hits. Eddie Micheletti Jr hit his first home run, a two run shot. Arjun Nimmala singled and doubled.

Connor O'Halloran left after 2.2 innings and 37 pitches. I am not sure why he had such an early exit. (I see from the game thread that he called the trainer out and pointed to his arm)

JR Freethy had a big day for Dunedin. In the second inning he tripled to score three runs. He picked up two more RBI with a bases loaded walk and a sac fly. Manuel Beltre had two more hits. The Jays received ten more walks as Jupiter continue to give.

Trey Yesavage went four innings with four K's. He did concede one run on three hits. I wasn't watching live but I checked the gameday. He was wild in the first two innings but seemed a little more around the plate in the last two. He did have 13 whiffs eight on the change up. Gage Stanifer one upped Yesavage, he had seven K's in his four innings. He had ten whiffs and his fastball averaged 95.9 mph vs Yesavage's 94.3. Just to make things miserable for the Jupiter hitters Colby Martin came in hitting 99 mph and averaging 97.

Hey Marc, I took a look at the spreadhseet link you posted in the other thread. It lists 2 IFA pitchers signed in last years signing period that I have not seen before and are not listed on any rosters. Just curious if they are definitely signed.

Ayverson Contreras
Julio Orazia
Marc Hulet - Monday, April 14 2025 @ 09:11 AM EDT (#458800) #
Both were reported signed and I saw video/photos of them in Jays DSL camp (they work out there some times years before officially signing).

But a number of things can derail that - injuries, failed identification, failed drug tests... and they often quietly disappear. Happens fairly often tbh.

I usually leave a player on for a year or two extra just to see if they resurface in a subsequent season but I think they're both now safe to remove.

"At this point, it feels to me that he’s more likely to go first overall than to slide out of the first 10 picks."

Just looked at The Baseball Cube for them and no sign of them there for '24 or '23.

In non-Jays prospects news...Nick Kurtz (4th overall pick last year) has a 1.226 OPS in AAA. Meanwhile Soderstrom has 6 HR so far. Must be nice to have power bats in your system!

Another poor outing from Bloss.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 02:23 PM EDT (#458870) #
Bloss is closer to a demotion to AA than he is to helping out the big league club.

A lot can change and it's early but I did caution more than once that he was being overrated and wasn't as MLB-ready as many thought.

There very little SP help at the AAA for another year...

Re: Bloss

Is there an injury? Like is the velocity down?

Or are they tinkering with his delivery or working on some secondary pitches? He’s been lit up all season long so it’s a tad concerning.

Getting excited by the DSL season. All those large pitchers. Hopefully we have some flame throwers.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#458873) #
Velo was 92-96 mph, which is normal. He got whiffs on five different pitches.

It's his command, which has always been the issue. When he loses it, he gets crushed.
John Northey - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 02:57 PM EDT (#458874) #
Well, Kurtz was never possible for the Jays being a 4th overall pick, and Soderstrom was 26th overall in 2020 when the Jays took Austin Martin 5th overall (to much celebration at the time as he was seen as a possible #1 overall pick). FYI: Martin is back in AAA at 26 but is hitting at last 419/526/452 over 38 PA in LF (4 G)/CF (3 G)/2B (1 G). Clearly his defense is very suspect if he is no longer mainly at 2B or CF but LF thus he needs that bat to be very alive to survive in the majors (ala Schneider). 88 OPS+ in the majors last year won't cut it for him. At least the Jays dumped him before his value cratered.

Bloss was cruising till 1st homer, Syracuse announcers were gushing over him.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 04:02 PM EDT (#458877) #
Yup, good for two innings and then he couldn't get anyone out especially once the lineup turned over... command disintegrated. 3 starts, 10.32 ERA, 11.1 IP, 19 hits, 9 walks, 7 strikeouts, 3 homers allowed.

Case Doughty is on rehab with Dunedin tonight. He is playing second base.

Cade Doughty is beginning a rehab in Dunedin tonight. Sam Shaw to the IL.
Kelekin - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 09:06 PM EDT (#458897) #
Rough news for Shaw, but glad to see Doughty is back.

Holcombe's statcast once again shows primarily 4-seam/cutter. But comparing it and the slider, I think it's his slider, just being picked up differently.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, April 15 2025 @ 10:14 PM EDT (#458909) #
Either way, 13 whiffs for Holcombe and 92-96 mph.

I watched some of the AA game and fast-moving Ryan Watson had another good start. 0.90 ERA through two starts. Not sure on his velo but Washington's AA hitters had a lot of trouble with his fastball. His secondary stuff didn't really stand out but it was good enough as a change of pace and he really moved the fastball around effectively.
