Notes

Joey Loperfido and Orelvis Martinez had two hits apiece with Martinez and Jonatan Clase getting a double. Easton Lucas yielded a run on two hits but struck out three over three innings. Paxton Schultz got the ‘L’, giving up a homer among two runs over three innings. Eric Pardinho worked around a hit and a walk for a scoreless frame.

Adrian Pinto homered to start the game. He would be replaced by Nick Goodwin in the eighth inning. That’s the second straight game Pinto has not played a full nine innings. Jackson Hornung tripled but did not score and Aaron Parker doubled but did not score. Victor Arias had a base hit but Arjun Nimmala was 0-for-4. Juaron Watts-Brown was beaten like a drum, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks while whiffing seven in 3-2/3 innings. He also gave up a long ball. Kai Peterson allowed an inherited runner to score but struck out one over 1-1/3 innings. Julio Ortiz gave up four runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Johnathan Todd and JJ Sánchez finished up the final 2-1/3 innings with Todd punching out three batters.

Manuel Beltre, Sam Shaw, Kendry Chirinos and Bryce Arnold all homered for Dunedin. Chirinos also tripled, Arnold had a single and a stolen base and Shaw scored four times. Chirinos and Shaw also took one for the team. Tucker Toman had a double, a single and three RBI and Devonte Brown also had two notches in the hit column. Eminem Flores pitched 2-1/3 perfect frames with a strikeout and stranded his inherited runner. Javen Coleman fanned six over two innings of one-run ball. Christian Mracna took the loss.

Dariel Ramon prevented a seven-inning no-hitter with a single and Juan Rosas drew a walk. Rehabbing Ryan Burr struck out two as the opener in a perfect frame and rehabbing Adam Macko gave up two runs in 3-1/3 innings on three hits and two walks to take the loss but he struck out six.

Fantastic game by Van Eyk. 7IP 1 ER, 2bb, 6K. This was game 1 of a DH.

Great to see. They've stuck by him despite his years of injury-related struggles. I don't expect much, but they clearly still believe in him. He just needs consistency now.

Schreck's been heating up. 1.371 OPS in the last 7 days (prior to his triple and walk in Game 1 today).

Two more dingers (and a double) last night for Adrian Pinto, who now leads the BlueJays organization with 7 homers... but the power comes from a highly-unsustainable 54% HR/FB rate.

Hope to see some player movement soon. Pinto, Yesavage, Stephen, Stanifer and Coleman should all move up. (Vancouver is going to be fun) Some of the rehab guys will be moving up soon too meaning that there will need to be some cuts especially to pitchers in the upper minors. Not an issue as Jays have tons of non prospects they can jettison if needed.

Pinto is hitting a lot of grounders this year so far, but on the plus side he's increased his contact rate significantly. I don't think there's a huge rush, but regardless of the grounders I think he's ready to move up to NH.

The other side of promoting Yesavage et al up from Dunedin is you still need to find innings in Dunedin. When Maroudis is ready and assigned back to Dunedin, I'd expect someone to move up to Vancouver. Maybe Hechevarria is another candidate to move up from the complex?

One of the ways they'll find innings in Dunedin is by removing the piggyback starters and allowing some to go longer. Plus a lot of the relievers haven't had much work because the starters have been chewing up innings.

Martin and Holcombe probably deserve to move up, too.

But the lack of development in the DSL is slowing promotions down.

Carson Messina made his pro debut earlier. A little rough to begin: single, double, groundout, single and he'd given up two runs. But he settled down, didn't allow another baserunner over the two innings, and struck out two.

7 strikeouts in 16 ABs for Bonilla. New year, more of the same...

Wow, didn't see that McElvain is rehabbing now too. Rogers and JWB should be moving up soon, so we could very well see a rotation of Perez, Wentworth, Yesavage, Stephen, and McElvain there by the end of the month.

When those moves happen and they stop piggybacking, Dunedin can run out Cates, Batista, Guerra, Stanifer, Maroudis, and possibly Hechavarria.

Both NH and Vancouver have been using bullpen days, so not too worried about finding corresponding moves or room for any of them.
