C’s are the lone winner for the affiliates.

Vancouver Canadians

The Vancouver Canadians (45-36) sit tied for first overall in the Northwest League Standings with the Eugene Emeralds heading into Wednesday’s games.

Vancouver hung on for a 7-6 victory in Hillsboro Wednesday night as the Hops rally was cut short after scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth.

With the bases loaded for Hillsboro, Kenny Castillo walked home to score and then Druw Jones grounded into a force out.

The quick defence of Carter Cunningham and catcher Aaron Parker caught the Hops Kevin Sim on his way to home plate.

Angel Ortiz then strike out to end the game with the bases still loaded for the Hops and Vancouver escaped with the victory.

Vancouver and Hillsboro play the third game of their series today at 6:35pm PDT.

Buffalo Bison

The Bisons were raked 7-2 by the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders (SWB) Wednesday night as the Rail Riders held a 5-0 after three innings.

Michael Stefanic homered to make it 5-1 in the fourth and the Bisons added another in that frame but could push no more runs across the rest of the game.

Buffalo is now 35-52 on the season. The two teams play again today at 6:35PM ET.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats game against the Somerset Patriots was washed out after 5 and a half innings with the Patriots leading by a commanding 9-1 score on Wednesday.

Charles McAdoo on base streak has reached 29 games after walking in the first. McAdoo has hit safely in 26 of 29 as well giving this game a positive spin on what was 7-0 lead after three frames.

Starter Ryan Watson bore the brunt of Somerset’s offence allowing seven runs in four innings including six hits, three walks a lone punch out. The two-out two run homers in the third battered and bruised Watson despite being unearned.

New Hampshire and Somerset play today at 6:35 PM ET with Kendry Rojas set to make his second Double-A appearance.

Dunedin Blue Jays

The Dunedin Blue Jays scored a run in their half of the 10th inning but they were outdone by the Palm Beach Cardinals who used their last at bat to score two in the bottom of the inning.

Palm Beach won this game 3-2 scoring one in the bottom of the 9th and the two in the 10th.

Dunedin and Palm Beach play today at 6:30 PM ET.

8. Blue Jays: Jamie Arnold, LHP, Florida State (No. 4)

This still feels like a college pitching landing spot and perhaps the Blue Jays didn’t expect Arnold to still be around. If he’s not, Witherspoon would be the most likely play, though the Jays could switch gears and look at the high school shortstop group, led by Parker.

something new to me
" Doyle did go to the Draft Combine but didn't have his medical done there, so like Willits and oft-brought up deal possibility Ike Irish, Doyle is not guaranteed at least 75 percent of the $10,252,700 slot value, and could then provide a deeper savings."

Still feels like this is a good year to be picking #8. Difference between #1 and #10 prospects is almost nothing. Kade Anderson is favourite to go #1 now. Is he a better pitcher than Arnold or Witherspoon? More polished and closer to majors but maybe not as much upside. There are like 5 SS in this group too. Holliday best prospect but also flawed and Arquette, Willits, Parker, Carlson could all go anywhere from like #2 to out of top 10. I expect Holliday, Anderson, Doyle, Willits, and Arquette to be drafted by time Jays pick but who knows. Maybe a couple of teams go way underslot and that changes everything.

There are a lot of players bunched together, but I would still always prefer to pick first and have our top choice of those players as opposed to having others dictate who gets to us.

Lets pretend that they really are set on a HS SS. If we maintained our pre-lottery slot of the 5th overall pick and the Top 4 went as expected with only Holliday going off the board, then we'd have first pick of the Willits/Carlson/Parker grouping. Since we fell to the #8 pick, there is a chance that only one (or none) of those 3 are going to be available to us. And while they seem fairly bunched together on most rankings, its entirely possible that our own internal board has one of them clearly above the others.

Don't forget that we also lost $1.3 mill from our bonus pool by dropping from 5th to 8th as well, which hurts extra hard because we also lost our 2nd round pick and the money associated with that as well.

It kind of sucks that the two times we suck, it ends up predating the truncated 2020 COVID draft (only 5 rounds, and limited baseball played therefore limited data on players) and the 2025 draft where we end up falling 3 spots, and the top of the board is fairly pedestrian. The 2026 draft is supposed to be much stronger, and of course we'll be picking back at the end of the first round for that one...

As Marc pointed out, the Jays hitting development has been substandard, although scouting may also have played into that as well. Pitching development this year, with the new people and approach, seems to be much much more successful.

I've always been a college hitter guy in the draft, but if they never work out, don't draft them high. I hope the Jays draft the best college pitcher available at 8.

Jays could also use the hardball AA strategy. Offer the pick the mandatory 75% of slot. If they accept, more money for later rounds. If they refuse, Jays get pick 9 in a stronger draft next year.
metafour - Friday, July 11 2025 @ 01:06 PM EDT (#463414) #
This wont happen (at least not as a "strategy"). Given that they are likely about to seriously subtract from their farm system at the deadline, they won't want to lose the year of development time on a high-end replacement prospect.

Also, with the 2nd round pick already lost, if they were to lose the 1st round slot as well then this entire draft-class would be more or less a huge lost cause. Your top pick would be a 3rd rounder, and our overall bonus pool would be miniscule.

Maybe it's both, mendicino. I don't have a BA subscription, but how many of those picks did they disagree with at the time they were made?

They've been pitching heavy in the early rounds.
It's really the older draft that were brutal with respect to position players.

Jays haven't used many high picks on hitters in the past 5 years. It's very hard to have successful minor league hitters without using high picks on hitters.

I am generally not a fan of taking pitchers early because I think you can get good pitchers later and it's very hard to get hitters. If you look at top position players who came through draft, almost all were high picks. If you look at top-10 drafted players by WAR this year, 7 were first round picks, 1 was 2nd round (Wood) and 2 were 3rd round (Raleigh and Pena).

With pitchers? Most top pitchers were still taken in first round but it's very different. Skubal was 9th round, Logan Webb 4th round, Hunter Brown was 5th round, DeGrom was 9th round, etc...

If an org continually fails to develop hitters, which the Jays have done even before current regime, is it still worth it it to be taking them.  In 2022 FG ranked  Kasevich 36, Doughty 48, Toman 54.  What were BA's rankings at the time of the draft?

Boston - Mookie Betts 5th round 172nd, Jarren Duran 7th round  212th,  and IFA Ceddanne Rafaela $10,000 2017.

The answer to that is to try to improve the draft and development, it's not to skip it.

Boston - Mookie Betts 5th round 172nd, Jarren Duran 7th round 212th, and IFA Ceddanne Rafaela $10,000 2017. "

My argument wasn't that it is impossible to find hitters after the first few rounds, just that it's very very hard. Take 2011, the year Mookie was drafted. There were 8 future all-star position players drafted in first and compensation round. 3 drafted in 2nd round. 0 in 3rd. 0 in 4th. 1 in 5th, 1 in 6th, 1 in 8th and that's it. They also gave Betts second round bonus money because they had 4 first round picks so tons of room to play so even then, "5th rounder" isn't exactly fair. The 2022 draft didn't really work out for the Jays but they'll probably get two major leaguers out of it in Roden/Kasevich which is probably about what you'd expect from that group of picks. People tend to vastly overestimate the percentage of draftees that make the majors or become stars.
