NOTES

It was CJ Van Eyk's turn to audition for the major league team. He did better than Rogers and Dallas but not good enough. He gave up five runs to the Mets in 5.1 innings. He just struck out one. Brendon Little had a rough one, he walked the first two hitters he saw, then hit a batter. A double then cleared the bases before Little walked another. That was it for him.

Jon Clase homered, his second. But he is hitting just .176 for the season and hasn't figured out AAA pitching yet. Josh Kasevich seems to pick up a hit every night and that has him hitting .278 with just a little power. I would say he is the same prospect he has been in previous years, a good singles hitter without much power. RJ Schreck started slowly but was red hot ten days ago. That raised his average to .240 but he cooled off over the last ten days losing twenty points on his BA. But he singled, doubled and walked twice in this game. His season has been marked by inconsistency, he needs a longer run of good performances. Charles McAdoo got off to a hot start, he had his OPS up to .980 with a week to go in April but he has been on a skid ever since. His OPS now is .812. He is hitting as well in May as he did in April but his power has dipped, just two home runs in May so far.

Gage Stanifer made the start for NH and was charged with three runs, however just one was earned. Arjun Nimmala made a two out error in the third inning that was followed by a home run. Stanifer made it through 4.2 innings but needed 82 pitches, 52 of them strikes. He struck out four. Nimmala made another throwing error later in the game, that makes three for him in AA.

Nimmala got off to a great start in AA, he was hitting .400 less than a week ago. That's great for anyone, and doubly so for a 20 year old. But he has cooled off some over the last five games. He went 1-4 in this game to keep his average above .300. In AA he hasn't shown much power or picked up many walks, yet. Jace Bohrofen is going for the three true outcomes award. He is striking out around 40% of his at-bats but he had ten home runs and 18 extra base hits out of his 29 total hits. Cutter Coffey is hitting just .214 and like Clase in AAA hasn't adjusted to the level yet. Eddie Micheletti is hitting .254 but has walked a lot and has seven home runs. Jackson Hornung hit well enough to get to AAA last year but hasn't repeated it this year. He is hitting .268 but he did homer on Thursday.

Unheralded Jay Harry homered again and now has four. He is hitting .343 with a .963 OPS and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Landen Maroudis just didn't have it on Thursday. Spokane hit three home runs off him in just 2.2 innings. Those home runs lead to six runs and raised his ERA to 6.00. Gilberto Batista followed and he was charged with three runs in five innings. His ERA is 7.18.

Alexis Hernandez is hot right now, he had three hits on Thursday. He is hitting .500 over his last four games with three home runs. Jacob Sharp homered and singled and drove in three runs.

This years Vancouver roster is short on position player prospects, especially with Nimmala now gone. Carter Cunningham leads the team in OPS but he is 25 now. Adrian Hernandez is second, he could play himself onto the top 30 if he keeps up his recent hitting. Tucker Toman had a great April hitting .311 but he has hit .178 in May.

In Dunedin's first game Silvano Hechavarria had another rough start. The Mussels scored four runs off him in three innings. Newly signed Bradley Wilson did no better, four runs in four innings.

David Beckles doubled and homered and drove in four runs. Nathan Lukes and Yorman Licourt also homered. Blaine Bullard went 3-5 with two doubles. Jojo Parker had two hits, Juan Sanchez one.

In game two, the Jays scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 walk off win. In the seventh Dariel Ramon singled, Raimundo De Los Santos tripled to tie the game setting it up for Jake Cook to single in the winning run. Bullard had two more hits and Parker a double. Bullard has five multi hit games over his last seven.

Troy Guthrie started game two, he went five innings and was charged with two runs.

The FCL Jays had 12 hits with every starter picking up at least one. Second baseman Angel Guzman had three hits. The Jays went deep three times. The home runs came from Jean Joseph, Sam White and Brock Tibbets, so technically two from rehabbers.

Sann Omosako is losing his lustre. He went four innings and surrendered nine hits. His ERA is 8.74.

Hernandez is a guy who has just kinda hung around and been just interesting enough at each level to keep an eye on while never overwhelming enough to scream real prospect. But he's now at over 250pa at A+ with around a 130wrc+ with good underlyings, at slightly old but not too old 22/23yrs old. There might be something here, especially if he's a capable defender.

I'm not sure i'd describe Clase as not adjusting to the level tho. This is his 3rd year in AAA, while still being the youngest player on the Bisons roster this year, and he was a dead on league average hitter the first 2yrs, with solid underlyings.

Age 22: 426pa, 11.5bb%, 25.8k%, .335babip, .263avg, .176iso, 28.6ld%, 10.7swst%, 101wrc+
Age 23: 352pa, 9.9bb%, 25.6k%, .336babip, .255avg, .148iso, 24.8ld%, 10.5swst%, 101wrc+
Age 24: 85pa, 10.6bb%, 22.4k%, .204babip, .176avg, .122iso, 24.1ld%, 11.1swst%, 49wrc+

Being league average in AAA at 22/23 is a solid performance, though not exactly screaming for a callup either. At age 24 we need to see some progression for him to be exciting, and instead he's scuffling for really the first time at the level. It seems like it might be mostly a babip thing, but that's just a guess at this point. Not sure what his injury was this year but that might be the reason for his struggles. But again for him to be exciting he needs to be more than just the league average guy he was the last two years, so he's got a ways to go even if the babip bounces back to normal. But again, he's still the youngest guy on the Bisons.

The two position players closest to being ready are Adrian Pinto and Sean Keys, in my view.  Pinto is likely quite a bit better than Lenyn Sosa right now.  He's got a positive W/K in double A, and is hitting .300 with medium range power.  He doesn't seem to be affected by playing 3 times a week.  Keys has cooled off, but his season line is still impressive.  He needs a little more time and fortunately, Springer is showing enough that you'd think he'll be all right for a while.

Kasevich is hitting the ball awfully hard with a max EV of 110 mph.  If he can find the launch-angle sweet spot with any kind of regularity, he'll be an entirely different hitter.  Of his 127 balls in play, 49 have been 95 mph or higher.  He has 8 doubles, 2 triples and a homer to show for all that crisp contact.

I'm not super bullish on him but 'd rather see Kasevich up here right now than Sosa tbh. I'm actually surprised he's not, given that it's always seemed like management is very high on Kasevich.

I had thought when the team decided to let Jimenez go it must mean they were confident in Kasevich's ability to step in case of an injury. Instead we are 72 PA into the Lenyn Sosa experience.

Leo Jimenez has a .373 xwOBA in Miami, playing once a week.

I'd rather have Leo Jimenez than Lenyn Sosa too, but I wouldn't go too crazy about Jimenez' xwOBA as his wOBA is very poor and his xwOBA is out of context for his career.  He's been an average hitter over his major league career (a lot better than Sosa) and he'd be a definite upgrade from that perspective.

The transactions column says righthander Ryan Jennings has announced his retirement. He retires with a 3.07 career ERA over his four seasons in the Jays system. I will remember him fondly for his three shutout innings and five punchouts to set the tone for the Vancouver Canadians in the clinching Game 4 of the Northwest League Championship at The Nat.
