The Blue Jays staff were out in force last night as the caravan's rolled into Syracuse and Manchester to promote the upcoming season. JP talked Blue Jays and Red Sox in Manchester. The Syracuse caravan featured Marty Pevey, the new manager with a more "rah rah" attitude, and stories on local pitchers Scott Cassidy and Mark Lukasiewicz.

Either the picture on the Skychiefs page is a joke, or else they should get someone else to exemplify the 'rah rah attitude'. :)

Pevey looks rather nauseous in that picture.

From the Union Leader article:

One man reminded Ricciardi he’s still in Red Sox country.

“J.P., thanks a lot for coming. You seem like a real class act,” said a fan. “I’ll be rooting for you to win the Wild Card.”

The room erupted in laughter.

“I think the Wild Card team won the World Series, right?” said Ricciardi.

Ah! They've changed the picture.
Just trust me on this one, he didn't look happy.

In the current photo on the site (and the others there), Pevey looks like Crash Davis. I guess that's only fitting since Pevey was a real-life Crash during his playing career.

wondering about what I just read:
-players coming to Manchester are just as good as the ones going to Syracuse... really? sound like PR, do not see how to load a lineup as good as that. Pitching wise? maybe, but i do not think so either...
-Malave " a laid back manager " (with that team! give him a break ) and why he is in Dunedin if " the organization is addressing a change of managerial style" I really did not like the way Dick Scott presented this hot stove act. If he does not like Malave, why he has not fired him, if he thinks that a Ra Ra manager would have won with Syracuse the last three years he is nuts, those were very bad teams...( and there were much more his administration responsability than the mgr's, in AAA you do hire from outside, is not just the farm status you are talking about )
-With the team Pevey had and will have in AAA, he is going to look very handsome "RaRa" or not.

I think J.P. meant that this year's AA team will be as good and as competitive as last year's AA team.

Malave is a very good manager. He is a good strategist and relates well to his players I I got this info from a former player who played for him). He did the best he could with poor AAA stock the past few years.

Putting Malave in Dunedin is a pretty fair show of good faith on the part of the Jays: He'll probably be looking after most of the 2003 draft class, as well as top prospects like League and Perkins.

Much agreed, Ryan.

Malave is one of the precious few kept by J.P. He deserves it.

With Lukasiewicz, Chacin, Maurer, and Chen, the Chiefs might have 4 lefthanders in the Syracuse pen to start the season (although it's likely Chen will work in the rotation). It's hard to believe that Lukasiewicz was a picked in the 1st round (supplemental; 43rd overall) by the Jays in 1993! Anyone know which 1992 free agent netted the '93 sandwich pick?

Well, I suspect that the cycle of managers is going to be an annual thing for the Jays. The reason is that this way, each guy will have his best prospets for three years... as the players move from high A, to AA, to AAA, the manager will move with them.

Why not? If you want to get the very best insight into a player's development, and stick to a development plan for him, what better way to implement and evaluate than to have the same guy doing it.

Anyone know which 1992 free agent netted the '93 sandwich pick?

Don't know, but it would have to be Manny Lee, Dave Winfield, Jimmy Key or Dave Stieb.
Craig B - Friday, February 06 2004 @ 01:38 PM EST (#79496) #
Huh. Might have been Henke too...

I do agree with both of you Ryan and coliver, but I do not get why Dick Scott went to Syracuse to blame the old mgr ( when Omar was also a fan fav ) : I like very much malave's chances of doing a good job at Dunedin...
_Ryan01 - Friday, February 06 2004 @ 02:11 PM EST (#79498) #
I don't think they're blaming Malave at all. Actually, the exact quote is "you can't fault anybody for it." They're just saying that a change was needed. Sometimes things just need to be shaken up a bit. Several quality prospects have stagnated after hitting AAA the last couple years so I think you can make a reasonable argument that a change may very well have been needed. If the Jays didn't hold a great deal of respect and faith in Malave he would have been fired outright.
