In today's Game Thread, Spicol poses the opinion-question, "Esteban is the Spanish equivalent of Steve, which, Steve McQueen and Steve Austin aside, really isn't that cool. Or is it, and I've been Miles Davis all these years without knowing it?"

Well, let's see. What does our All-Steve Team look like?

Limiting ourselves to Steves That Made the All-Star Team (and totally eliminating off-spelling Stephens and Estebans and people with family names like Lee Stevens andd Vern Stephens), that leaves us with this a pretty thin team, at first glance -- is Spicol right?

A couple of slots are filled with guys who might've been All-Stars, had things broken differently; these are denoted with an asterisk (*). There is currently just one Steve in the Hall of Fame. Can you name him before scrolling down?

And can we get a little help at shortstop and in the outfield? Don't make me put Steve "Psycho" Lyons out in right ...

C Swisher (Yes, he was too an All-Star once)
1B Garvey
2B Sax
SS
3B Buechele*
LF Kemp
CF Finley
RF
DH Balboni*

Rotation:
Carlton, Rogers, Avery, Busby, Trachsel
Bullpen: Bedrosian, Barber, Hargan, Howe, Ontiveros

Apologies to other All-Star Steves:
Gromek, Stone, Blass

Who else?

Steve Jeltz was a shortstop of sorts. Wasn't he?

Also, COMN for another examination of coolness vis-a-vis Steveness.

Steve Karsay, remember him? Those were the days...
_Spicol - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 02:04 PM EDT (#32021) #
Steve Buechele? You hold up Steve Buechele as evidence that the name Steve is cool? Steve Buechele reminded me of William Katt of "Greatest American Hero" fame. That role totally wiped out any progress he'd made through "Big Wednesday".

That Erkel kid set the Steve movement back decades. But thanks for trying, Mick.

As for the team, how about Steve Karsay? Steve Jeltz should make the team, only because he was born in France and somehow managed to concentrate on baseball despite having daily access to Parisian women. That's impressive, even if his OBP is lacking.

Um -- yeah, Spicol, you probably should be concerned given that two guys have been mentioned, both twice, as obvious oversights ... and they're Steve Karsay and Steve Jeltz.

Keep dem nominees comin'!

Would Steve Parris count? Maybe as the AAA Steve team?
Mike Green - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 02:17 PM EDT (#32024) #
Steve Yeager wasn't a bad catcher. Steve Chitren was one of those pitchers who came up and looked like he was going to be great, but wasn't. Steve Olin is a sad story, of course.

The pitching is actually pretty deep. In addition to the regrets, there are names like Steve Renko and Steve Sparks.

What name would produce the best team. Off the top of my head i would go with Jose! or maybe Joe.
_Matthew E - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 02:48 PM EDT (#32026) #
I suspect you could compete with a team of Georges.
_Mick - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 02:52 PM EDT (#32027) #
All in good time ...

We've already compiled a pretty good team of Franks.
_Rob - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 10:13 PM EDT (#32028) #
Steve Boros played 5 games at SS for the 1957 Tigers. Does that count?
_Rob - Monday, August 09 2004 @ 10:29 PM EDT (#32029) #
Nice try with the Steves, but they cannot measure up to...

The Robbers! (All Stars only, and Spanish versions of Robert count)

C Bob Boone
1B Bob Horner
2B Roberto Alomar
3B Bob Elliott (no, really)
SS
LF Bob Johnson
CF
RF Roberto Clemente

Rotation:
Bob Gibson, Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Bob Buhl, Bob Friend. That's right.

Bullpen:
Bob Knepper, Rob Dibble, Roberto Hernandez, Bob Lee, Robb Nen.

Steve Sax?

Steve Green has a career ERA+ of 160.

Yes, yes, over 6 career innings in 2001. It's a short peak, but look at those rate stats!
_Mick - Tuesday, August 10 2004 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#32032) #
Nick, yes, Steve Sax ... alas, he is the only Steve All-Star who played 2B. He certainly paved the way for Chuck Knoblauch to throw bullets at Keith Olbermann's mother in New York, though!

Okay, unless we have more nominations, here's our current All-Steve Team (we can get into other names in separate thread, Rob, but if you're going to include "Roberto" then I suppose Steve should include "Esteban") ...

Steve Finley, CF
Steve Sax, 2B
Steve Garvey, 1B
Steve Balboni, DH
Steve Kemp, LF
Steve Buechele, 3B
Steve Lyons, RF
Steve Swisher, C
Steve Jeltz, SS

SP Steve Carlton
SP Steve Rogers
SP Steve Busby
SP Steve Avery
SP Steve Trachsel
CL Steve Bedrosian
RP Steve Barber
RP Steve Hargan
RP Steve Howe
RP Steve Ontiveros

If you get consistent hitting from the 1-3 hitters, maybe the 4 and 5 guys drive in a bunch of runs, Carlton wins 25, Rogers and a healthy Busby each win 17 and this team competes for the Wild Card.

Or maybe they'd be a .500 team, finish 81-81 ... you know, sort of "even-Steven."

MONEY TO ANYONE WHO CAN NAME THE ALL BUD TEAM! BUDDY BELL3RD, BUDDY BIANCALANA SS, BUD BLACK SP. BUD HARRELSON MGR/SS
_Mick - Tuesday, August 17 2004 @ 01:04 PM EDT (#32035) #
Well, Curt, go to BaseballReference.com amd search for "Bud.' There are 115 players in MLB history namewho wen y by bud or buddy, including five who made All-Star teams, spo I think you'd end up with a pretty decent team. Happy to do it. ahow much money are we talking about, and is that in US or CDN dollars?
_curt - Wednesday, August 18 2004 @ 12:50 AM EDT (#32036) #
THATS COOL. BUT WHY DO YOU WANT TO RESEARCH IT FIRST. BE A MAN. TRY IT FIRST WITHOUT LOOKING MAN
_Mick - Thursday, September 23 2004 @ 03:04 PM EDT (#32037) #
Curt, I want to research it first to be sure I'm right. If it requires SWAGs to be a "man," then I surrender, bud. <-- irony.
