With the Montréal Expos now in Washington, rumor has it that the Phillies are supposed to be our new rival for interleague play. So I guess that those of us who know nothing about them should read the upcoming Philadelphia preview next Monday.

The Jays have fallen to second place behind Cleveland, but only by the slimmest of margins. I recommend that they go in there today and show the new rivals who's boss and get that first place position back, killing two birds with one stone.

Being just some guy with rudimentary photographic skills who somehow stumbled upon a friendly baseball website that gave him article-posting access, I can make recommendations like that.

According to MLB.com, this game is not being broadcast by either side, so it's not even available to our friends with GameDay. Thus, I recommend making up our own play-by-play and colour commentary based on the Yahoo box score.

I leave it to you guys to sort out who calls what inning.

Toronto's Gustavo Chacin is suppoesed to make his second start and third appearance of the spring, and he is supposed to be matched up against Philly's Brett Myers.

Maybe. Because the score is 1-1.

Strike that. 2-1 Philly.

Is it just me or ever since he was named a "starter", Chacin has been hit hard?

3-1 Phillies. Bottom of 2nd

Jays run scored on Cat triple and O-Dog groundout
jsut - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:14 PM EST (#106056) #
3-1 now. Chacin seems to have this giving up runs thing down (assuming he's pitching).

3-1 Philly in the bottom of the second.

SherryStar,

where do you get your information , on how the runs were scored? Did Frank give you a call or what?
Sherrystar - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:27 PM EST (#106063) #
JDog,

Listening to the FAN at work and Wilner gave the update.

And Frank only calls me whe he needs help with his swing...

Bleh. 4-1 Phillies, Still bottom 3rd.

Im all for the idea of Chacin making the club... I think its important to see what the big club has got here , because I think with the pitching depth they have coming up There will be others in Chacin's shoes in the next two years... so i like them giving him his shot this year. That being said ...the jays decision makers seem pretty fickle so far this spring. I wonder if Chacin gets roughed up in the rest of his spring starts, if we will see another change in the rotation.
Sherrystar - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:36 PM EST (#106066) #
6-1 Philly

Blue Jays...second run on a homerun ...by who else Gabe Gross....
Andrew K - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:42 PM EST (#106069) #
Do we know if Chacin went for the whole of the first 3 innings?
Jdog - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:43 PM EST (#106070) #
that was figured out using statistics...so far this spring 11% of the jays run are courtesy of Gabe Gross's homerun balls ....i made that up , ya im guessing
Sherrystar - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:45 PM EST (#106072) #
I think "Babe" Gross is really gunning for Carlos' spring training record of 8 long-balls...

Well, even if they decide to trade him at least his trade value is only increasing daily!

Jonny German - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#106073) #
That's a good one Jdog... I just looked it up, the Jays now have 50 runs and Gross has 6 homers, so that's 12%. Plus however you want to count however many men were on base for his homers.
Sherrystar - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#106074) #
6-2 Philly bottom of the 4th

Chacin gave up all 6 runs (Ouch!)

Mike Green - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#106075) #
A nickname is born. Babe Gross works for me.
Jdog - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:49 PM EST (#106076) #
SherryStar,

I agree, but my homerun call for Gabe on tonights game was my guess of how they scored their homerun...just making sure you are aware of that
Jonny German - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:50 PM EST (#106077) #
So we're tentatively down to 10% on the Gross Home Run Tally.
Jdog - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:50 PM EST (#106078) #
German,

wow thanks , i knew one of you crazy bauxites would do the actual math for me ....i just came up with 11% off the top of my head thinking it sounded about right...my statistics professor would be so proud....
Sherrystar - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 02:50 PM EST (#106079) #

But just a matter of time till he hits his 6th...7th...

Gabe Gross DID NOT HIT A HOMERUN

The Jays got their 2nd run on an RBI Double by Hillenbrand that scored Gabe Gross who singled before him.

RBI Groundout by Hudson & RBI Double by Jays are their 2 runs.

Unless he's working on a new pitch in front of real live MLB players. It's Spring Training, after all.

kpataky - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 03:47 PM EST (#106090) #
you said it Hank! I do remember he was learning a new pitch ... I'll have to ask him Thursday when I see him.

Last week at Legends Field, he seemed to be all over the place - but he was mostly throwing off speed stuff. I remember Jim Kaat saying he was throwing a slider that night, but I don't remember him using that last year in New Hampshire. He was primarily throwing a fastball, cutter, curve and some sort of change - tho maybe that was a variation of his cutter.

Kaat made a point of differentiating the break between a curve (12 to 6) vs a slider (lefties throw it and it breaks away from lefty batters and righties throw it to righty batters and it breaks away).

Speaking of our natural rivals, why couldn't they be the Brewers? I remember there was a period in the late 80s early 90s, before they moved, when even our best teams had trouble beating them. They were a serious nemesis. Add the fact you've got Gordo there now, with all the personal history -- doesn't that spell rivalry?
Andrew K - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 04:05 PM EST (#106093) #
lots of runs being scored now (8-10, in the top of the 8th). Can we find out which pitcher is giving them up?
Ducey - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 04:12 PM EST (#106094) #
you think 10 runs is bad, check out the Seattle game. KC apparently gave up 37 runs in one inning! (or its a typo)

You're not kidding. What is this, the revenge save? Does Bowa have a sense of humour?

Chacin gets shelled again. Is my Nixon theory right? I'm not really worried about it either way, though. It's only Spring Training, and if Chacin continues to get rocked in May, he can always get sent down, and replaced by Batista, or someone else. It's probably better to put him in the rotation and see what he can do, because the rotation's only going to get better (either through the Rogers $, the Arnsberg cult, or better prospects coming up.). The only question is if the Peterson treatment was a good thing for Gus.

R Billie - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 05:48 PM EST (#106104) #
Two more hits for Gross today including a double. He's batting .500 (10-20) for the spring and I think about 7 of his 10 hits are for extra bases (5 homers, 2 doubles).
R Billie - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 05:50 PM EST (#106105) #
Regarding Adams, he closed a spring training game against Jays minor leaguers. I wouldn't call that a big deal. Though it wouldn't necessarily surprise me if he had a better year than last year either.
kpataky - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 05:51 PM EST (#106106) #
Bright side: Gabe Gross went 2-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI and is presently batting .500 for the Spring

Jays had 14 hits and a 4 run outburst that fell short in the 8th inning.

Chacin's Line: He took the loss for his 3 IP, 7 Hits, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 Ks, ERS: 15.43

Bright side for Chacin: he went 1-1 in his only At Bat.

The Blue Jays optioned INF John Hattig to Triple-A Syracuse, and INF Raul Tablado and OF Miguel Negron to Double-A New Hampshire.

Here are Fordin's notes with updates on Chachin's struggles, Kerry's hip, Rio's arm, Lily's shoulder, and that some guys who were sent down (Arnold, Ramirez, Perkins)

Kerry has apparently adopted the David Wells method of pitching preparation by getting rid of running and squats and instead sitting in the whirlpool.

Y'know, as I previewed that post, I had a funny feeling that I'd made an embarassing mistake. Unfortunately, my embarassing mistake meter started blinking on the spelling of Arnsberg, not whether or not Bowa had been fired. D'oh.
BallGuy - Monday, March 14 2005 @ 08:38 PM EST (#106114) #
Perhaps if Kerry also did the beer drinking, junk food eating, hanging out with bikers, barroom brawling training methods that Wells has immersed himself in he would also have the same relative success. Might be worth a try Kerry....just a suggestion.

Except Wells does it with a six-pack of Bud and several slices with double pepperoni...

I think Kerry's outing today showed a lot of promise. Here's hoping that the whirlpooling works because we certainly could use 2 innings of one hit ball from him all year.

I'm not sure where the appropriate place to post this is, but I see that the Toronto Star is reporting this morning that the Jays will have a new public address announcer this year, after firing Murray Eldon on Valentine's Day.

Chalk me up as disappointed by this move. I'm not sure what direction they're intending to move in, but Murray was a classy, professional voice. If they want to bring in a goofball radio announcer to amp up the already aggravating noise pollution, it'll certainly make it easier for me to save a few bucks and watch these games from home.
