Theoretically, a team with a 1.000 winning percentage should beat a team with a .000 winning percentage exactly 100% of the time.

So much for theory.

At any rate, the most interesting subplot in this game isn't the possible sweep of the Rays by the Jays. Today's plate umpire is scheduled to be none other than Phil Cuzzi. In case you haven't been around Da Box since last year, I'll direct you to this account of an infamous game from the 2003 season, this story from the following game where Josh Towers was tossed, this wrapup of the incident, and this story from last summer.

Josh Towers is on the mound for the Jays, ex-Jay Mark Hendrickson for the Mobula Hypostoma. There hasn't been any bad blood evident so far, but with Cuzzi back behind the plate there might be some lingering resentment visible. It will bear watching.

Any bets on which Josh Towers shows up today? Since Tampa has looked completely inept at the plate so far this series, I'm guessing the "Good Towers" 7IP 2ER... either that or an ejection in the 3rd :)

Got in just in time to see Mariano Rivera blow his second straight save, as ARod booted a game-ending double play ball, and the Sox are now on top 6-3.

This is great news, for not only do the Jays gain a half game on the Yankees - reducing our magic number to about 159 - but the Sox also win a game and won't be quite as desperate for victory when they get to town.
Mick Doherty - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:15 PM EDT (#109624) #
Jim, you're probably right, but a bit premature ... Keith Foulke will tell you that a lead in the bottom of the ninth isn't crystal clear victory for the Red Sox in New York.

Hey guys,

First post, too bad the game's not on TV today. Any reason why? RSN had the Sox-Yanks game on TV this afternoon, you would think they would just roll into coverage of the Jays. Oh well, I guess that's why they're in charge and I'm not.
Named For Hank - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#109630) #
I imagine that the ratings for a 4:00 Jays vs. Rays game would not be worth what the game would cost.

Of course, I'm at work with my little radio (in fact, the radio pictured in the Game Thread logo), so I'm not bothered by the lack of TV for this one. ;)
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#109631) #
The game is on mlb.tv (for those not in blackout region and who want to shell out for it). But it's a very strange broadcast -- the sound is the devil rays radio broadcast, and the pictures seem to some sort of combination of the stuff you would see on the big screen and a relatively small number of live cameras. No graphics.

Sadly, the FAN radio feed is quite badly delayed, compared to the video feed.

Yet sportsnet will show the Sox - Yankees game?

Of course -- they don't have to send down a crew or rent cameras or anything, just buy the feed from the YES network or NESN. If the D-Rays aren't televising the game (and from the sounds of the MLB.tv feed, they aren't), they can't just use the D-Rays video and add their own announcers.

BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:29 PM EDT (#109635) #

Yes, because they don't have to produce that game, they can just pickup the feed from another network.

Tom Cheek isn't talking a lot, but he sounds really good, comparatively. Perhaps he's got more in the tank because it's early in the day?

Great to hear Tom sounding a lot more like Tom. Unfortunately, even a partially incapacitated Tom being in the booth magnifies Warren Sawkiw's deficiencies.
JaysNJets - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#109637) #
Yeah, it's a great time of year. Classes done for the term and I have a lot of free time to 'study' for exams. Lots of time to listen to the Jays in my off time, at least until the summer job begins. ;(

Is it just me or is Sawkiw really tough to listen to? Maybe we got spoiled by Tom through the years, but (bite my tongue) I think I'd rather listen to the atrocious Rod Black talk baseball than Warren. (Considering the talk on this site yesterday, this is probably not going to be a popular position.)
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#109638) #
Towers' balk seemed to be caused by his foot slipping.

Then O-Dog tried to do a bit much and made a throwing error. He was all out of position when he took the ball, and his legs got tangled. At that time Huff was almost caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd but he had time to get to third safely. It looked a bit unimpressive.

The final out was a good play though.
Elijah - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:34 PM EDT (#109639) #
This is the first radio broadcast I've heard this year with Jerry and Warren (I'm listening on XM Radio and they're carrying the away broadcast for some reason).

My goodness, Sawkiw doesn't add anything that Jerry can't say himself. I'd almost rather just have Jerry go by himself. I know Tom won't say a whole lot simply because he probably feels that he's a guest and not working and may only talk with Jerry's prompting. I hope he doesn't really feel that way because I'm sure Jerry would welcome Tom's thought anytime. I know I would over Sawkiw. At least give us Wilner!
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:37 PM EDT (#109640) #
The D-Rays commentators absolutely *love* Alex Gonzalez. They go on and on about his bat (went ecstatic when he hit a HR yesterday or whenever it was) and you'd think his defense was perfection personified. And his "hustle" is beyond reproach. The sort of guy anyone would want on their team.

I don't want him on our team!
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#109641) #

Nice first hit of the season for Rios -- a triple.

Tom's gone from the booth, having some trouble with his voice. Jerry says "God bless you" as he leaves. Gave me the chills actually.

I think we'll hear more Wilner during the homestands. He's got a young family, and I can completely understand the desire not to be away from them (if indeed that's why he's not on the road with the team -- I don't have any inside information, I just know as a new dad myself that I wouldn't go away for a week or two at a time).

How are you liking XM radio? What's it cost? How's the baseball coverage?

"Triple" by Rios on a diving attempt by Huff. With 19 games against the Rays and this outfield defense, the Jays could set a major league record for triples by a team.

Geez, anyone else glad we got Speier in exchange for Hendrickson? Speier's a real nice piece in the bullpen, and it sounds like the big lefty seems to be getting hit real hard today, and most other days as well.
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#109647) #
Oh, that was a terrible error by Huff. He wasn't near the ball, but went into a slide anyway, and simply didn't reach the ball to stop it bouncing over him and into the corner. He could surely have seen, way earlier, that he wasn't going to get there and run to the corner instead. It would surely have made for a double instead of a triple.

Well, XM conveniently raised the subscription price from $9.99 to $12.99 on Opening Day - I guess you gotta pay for those $60M/year rights fees somehow.

I really like it though - I was waffling between Sirius and XM and I've been quite satisfied with XM. Sirius has a lot more sports (NBA, NHL, Premiership Soccer) and it's all about MLB and since the season has started, it's easy to switch channels and hear different games. Normally they only have the home broadcast but on today's Rays/Jays broadcast, they have the Jays' feed.

I don't know what the availability of XM is in Canada but as a diehard Jays (and MLB fan), I'm quite satisfied. And the music selection is also good - I believe the playlists are much larger than that of Sirius. I rarely listen to terrestrial radio anymore except for local news.

It's not quite as life altering as TiVo but it's close!

Missed what happened with Adams -- did he try to bunt Rios home and Rios missed the sign?
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:46 PM EDT (#109653) #
Followed up by a poor play by the Jays. It looked like a suicide squeeze (?) when Adams bunted with Rios on 3rd, but Rios wasn't running... he was easily tagged out heading back to 3rd. Missed sign? Or brain failure?

So far, this game is rather different to the first two. Instead of mostly good pitching and professional players getting the most out of their ability, we have the pitching seeming a bit dubious and both sides committing errors.
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:47 PM EDT (#109654) #
Not sure I like that squeeze call, especially since it appears Rios missed it. The thirdbase coach and the batter need to make sure that the runner at third is atleast watching the signs.
Elijah - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:48 PM EDT (#109655) #
Man, now they switched the XM broadcast to the Tampa guys! Oh well. I'll get to hear Jerry, Warren and Mike this weekend when they go home.

Phil Cuzzi apparently lost his quick thumb. He easily could have ejected Crawford after his first at bat when Carl slammed his bat to the ground arguing a call and Singleton got into Cuzzi's face a little bit.
Chuck - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#109656) #
Quiz: Who's the best defensive LF in baseball? Answer, if you can easily answer this question, he probably shouldn't be a left fielder.

Why doesn't Piniella just make Crawford his every day CF and be done with it? He certainly has the wheels to become a gold glover out there so why waste him in LF? Let Baldelli and Gathright and everyone else monkey around in LF or RF and hide Huff in the other corner.

Were Baldelli healthy and playing every day, perhaps (just perhaps) you could make a case for Crawford staying in LF, but to keep sending him back to LF to make room for the likes of Gathright and Singleton? Yech.

Carl, here are the keys to center field. Enjoy the next decade out there. You'll be getting a call from Mr. Steinbrenner in your late 20's.

Anyone know how Adams handles the bat against southpaws? I've never heard anything too heinous, but could that be a possible reason for the squeeze attempt?
Chuck - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 04:55 PM EDT (#109659) #
I'm not getting to watch this game, just following along with everyone's posts. Yet another miscue from Huff. How droll.

Why is it that Piniella, a lover of defense, has Huff in RF and Singleton DHing? I mean, if you're going to play Singleton at all, it has to be for his glove, not his bat.

Why doesn't Huff just become the every day DH and be done with it?

That's two positions I've locked down for Sweet Lou today. When Gonzalez's .280 OBP grows tiresome come mid-June, I'll have 3B recommendations for him at that time. I might ever recommend playing the heckler.

That's probably the reasoning, in addition to having good wheels at third and a tall lefty on the mound.

Yeah, but there's also more of him on this broadcast than there was on Sportsnet. It's a trade-off I don't think I want to make.

Wow, sounds like quite the inside the park home run from Crawford. It sounded like it generated a lot of crowd noise. Hopefully Rios will learn from that mistaken throw.

Elijah - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 05:04 PM EDT (#109668) #
Crawford just hit an inside-the-park homer off the top of the wall in rightcenter. But Rios made a poor decision to throw to third. It was not even that great of a throw and by the time the throw got to Koskie, Crawford was halfway between third and home. May not have made a difference but Alex still needs to grow more into the RF position. It'll still take some time.
Four Seamer - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 05:06 PM EDT (#109669) #
My apologies to Vernon! ESPN Gamecast described it as "an inside-the-park-homerun to deep centre".
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 05:07 PM EDT (#109670) #
Crawford's HR was easy. Wells and Rios made a bit of a mess of getting the ball, letting it bounce against the wall over both of their heads, and then it took Rios quite a long time to run after and get the ball. I didn't note at the time, but I'd think that Crawford was halfway to 3rd by the time Rios picked up the ball. Then the throw wasn't very strong (quite high and looping). I didn't spot a cutoff man coming out to shallow right/centre and Rios threw it to 3rd, and offline to boot. Crawford could probably have run 5 bases.

True, Rios didn't make a great play backing up, but the ball bounced back towards centre. It was going to be a homerun no matter how it was played defensively because Crawford is the fastest man in baseball. I'd lay money on him posting the best circuit time against anyone else in the majors.

I don't disagree, but it would have been interesting to see the following: Rios doesn't run all the way to the wall, takes the ball on the carom, turns, and throws hard to a well-placed cutoff man near 2nd base. The cutoff man spins and fires to home, where Zaun is blocking the plate. With Rios collecting the ball with momentum already towards home, and two flat throws, it might have been close.

Crawford can surely run, though.

robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 05:50 PM EDT (#109707) #
Not when turns are involved, I think.

Last year I timed Crawford at 12.6 seconds on a triple from the crack of the bat to his touching third base on his slide. No one I've timed has come close to that, so until someone does my money is on Crawford for the full circuit.
Chuck - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 05:55 PM EDT (#109708) #
No one I've timed has come close to that, so until someone does my money is on Crawford for the full circuit.

Trouble with Gathright is all you can time him on is home to first to dugout.

Cecil Fielder once went from home to third in under 12.6 seconds. Thing is, there was a box of Krispy Kremes waiting for him and he had to take a left turn out of the batter's box to get there.

More great D from the D-less Rays. Pinella is going to want to retire by the all-star break.
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:06 PM EDT (#109710) #

Here comes Frasor, nice line for Towers:

IP	H	R	ER	BB	SO	HR	PC-ST	ERA
6.0	4	1	1	0	6	1	85-62	1.50

TorontoDan - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#109711) #
Oh god, bring Towers back! Never thought I'd say that, but I am. Let's hope Frasor can pull this out of his hat. Based loaded, no outs.
jsoh - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#109712) #
If the Jays win, I'm givin' the MVP of the game to Nick Green. An absolute boon to the Jays today.
Rob - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:14 PM EDT (#109713) #
What the hell just happened? I was listening to the radio:

"The ball goes back, Rios is there, and--" the phone rang. Seeing I had to answer it rather than listen to the play, I missed everything, hung up, and heard "this inept Devil Rays team."

BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:16 PM EDT (#109714) #
Frasor gets out of a basesloaded nobody out jam, surrendering only a run. Man the Rays sure make a lot of mistakes.
VBF - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:17 PM EDT (#109715) #
The rays continued their incompetency streak when they couldn't score a run off a base hit off the wall. They had runners on second and first. I'd really hate to be in that Tampa dressing room tonight. That is bad baseball.
Rob - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:18 PM EDT (#109716) #
Let me get this straight...Nick Green was on second, the ball hit the wall, and he didn't score? What??
Elijah - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#109717) #
On the ball Rios dropped, I don't know if I can really blame Green. It looked as if Rios had it all the way (and he should have had it) and Green was set to tag to get to third with one out. Once the ball was dropped, Rios got to it right away and Green had no chance to score.
JaysNJets - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#109718) #
Rob,

Sounds like Green at second base went back to tag rather than holding halfway to see if the ball was caught. Thus, when the ball went off of the wall in right, he couldn't score. That was Jerry's 'inept' baserunning error.
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:20 PM EDT (#109719) #
Yup that's what happened. I'm assuming he thought Rios caught the ball.

RBI Triple for Hudson.
jsoh - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:20 PM EDT (#109720) #
What the hell just happened? I was listening to the radio:

Ball bounced off the top of the wall, but Nick Green had already retreated back to 2nd base for reasons known only to him and the little green man on his shoulder.

By the time he got back on his horse, the ball had already made it back to the infield, so he couldnt advance past 3rd.

And in other news. It'd be real nice if the Jays can cash in O-Dog from 3rd.

TorontoDan - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:23 PM EDT (#109721) #
Excellent timing for Koskie's first hit! RBI single giving us a nice cushion. Nice to see him make a difference on offense before the home opener.
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:23 PM EDT (#109722) #
Cha-ching. Koskie with his first hit, O-Dog scores.
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:24 PM EDT (#109723) #
It'd be real nice if the Jays can cash in O-Dog from 3rd.

Your wish is Koskie's command.

Miller didn't last long. 2 pitches.

Stellers Jay - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:25 PM EDT (#109724) #
This is going to sound stupid after the fact that he singled and scored already in this inning. But it's the second game in a row that I have been suprised Johnson is left in the game to face a righty in the late innings of a close game. I imagine Gibbons is using his defense ahead of Cat's as the justification. But, if that's the case why not use Gross as the substitution?
Ron - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:26 PM EDT (#109725) #
Situational Hitting is a beautiful thing to watch.

I know this game isn't over yet but I'm really impressed with the Jays thus far.

The starters (1,4,5) have only given up 4 runs in 18 innings of work.
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#109726) #
Green made the correct baserunning play. With none out, he had to make sure he got to third with less than 2 out. It looked as though Rios had it; I'm pretty sure it went off his glove (which is one reason why he ran it down so quickly). Green scored later anyway so his baserunning cost the Rays nothing even if one insists on arguing he should have scored on the wall single. It was the DP that killed the inning.
Stellers Jay - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:30 PM EDT (#109727) #
Gibbons is planning on getting his money's worth out of Schoeneweis this year as he's on for the third night in a row.
Rob - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:30 PM EDT (#109728) #
Schoeneweis pitching three days in a row? I wouldn't do that. If Gibby is going to use his lefty for the L-L matchup every night, the Jays need another one on the roster.

And right on cue, Crawford tripled.
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:31 PM EDT (#109729) #
Again, Gibbons is slow to get his relievers ready, so Schoeneweis has to face Huff.
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:31 PM EDT (#109730) #
I agree with Robert on Green's baserunning. He had to assume that Rios would catch it -- it looked like he should have done (not easily, but routinely). I think that the commentators are getting on the D-Rays because they have played poorly in many other respects so far.
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:33 PM EDT (#109731) #
Scratch that last post. Huff is lefthanded but I would still have a righty warming up at the start of the inning just in case.
Jim - TBG - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:34 PM EDT (#109732) #
Well, I'd say the SS LOOGY has hit something of an iceberg at this point...

Ron - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:36 PM EDT (#109734) #
Aww crap I knew I shouldn't have jinxed the Jays like that. It's been all downhill since the post.
Chuck - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:40 PM EDT (#109736) #
Maybe everyone was right. Maybe Schoeneweis really isn't a LOOGY after all.
Paul D - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:41 PM EDT (#109737) #
So, if the Jays are up in the 9th, do you bring in Batista?
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:44 PM EDT (#109738) #
Tough luck for Towers.
Ryan C - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:46 PM EDT (#109739) #
sigh. What went wrong.
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:47 PM EDT (#109740) #
The Rays started hitting the ball.
Paul S - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#109741) #
I was listening in the car, and the Rays came up in the 8th as I was pulling onto my street. I could've never seen THIS coming.

Maybe Gibbons won't run SS out there three days in a row. He probably said he was OK to go, but that doesn't mean he was. Four lefties in a row seemed like a design flaw in the lineup, but all of them reached. He had to be gassed.
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#109742) #
I'm confused. Who is going to play SS in the bottom of the 9th (if there happens to be one, which looks a bit unlikely)? Hinske???
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#109743) #
If the Jays rally, it will be an interesting defensive alignment: no shortstop left so it might be Hinske, Koskie, Hudson and Hillenbrand in the infield and the pitcher in the batting order.
Magpie - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#109744) #
Sawkiw makes a point! Why was Rios swinging at the first pitch, leading off the 9th down by three.

What happens if they Jays have to play defense in the bottom of the inning? O-Dog to short, F-Cat to second? What else?

Paul S - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#109745) #
Hinske's DH, so he can't unless they want the pitcher to bat. O-Dog moves over and Frankie Cats plays 2B for the first time since 2002?
Stellers Jay - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#109746) #
Don't think it's going to matter, but should the Jays some how tie this up, who's going to play shortstop now that Cat is coming in to hit for McDonald? (Menechino and Adams have already been used)
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:56 PM EDT (#109747) #
OK, if the Jays happen to tie it up, who is going to play short?
Paul S - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:57 PM EDT (#109748) #
No, really. Who will play short? :-)
Rob - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:58 PM EDT (#109749) #
Current lineup: Gross, Hudson, Wells, Koskie, Hillenbrand, Hinske, Rios, Zaun, Cat. Only Myers is left on the bench. Something's not right here.

If the Jays tie it up, who will play shortstop? Hudson? Koskie? Rios?
Stellers Jay - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 06:59 PM EDT (#109750) #
My best guess would be O-Dog moves to short and Cat goes in at second base.
Paul S - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:00 PM EDT (#109751) #
Aw man. Having sole posession of first would've forced Griffin to cram it with walnuts.
Brian W - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:00 PM EDT (#109752) #
My guess is Hudson would cover everything between first and third. He has the range for it :)
robertdudek - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:01 PM EDT (#109753) #
I hope Dr Prison Fence asks Gibbons who he was planning to play at short had the Jays rallied. It would be interesting to know.

My game Jays MVP is Josh Towers.
Elijah - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:01 PM EDT (#109754) #
Well, it doesn't matter now. But I'm glad that Gibbons tried to get to the bottom of the 9th by putting in Cat and worrying about defense later.

I'm sure Dr. Fence will ask Gibbons who would've played short. No way that Cat would've played 2nd. My guess is that it would've been either Koskie or Hillenbrand.
Andrew K - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:02 PM EDT (#109755) #
What a shame. I feel sorry for Towers, who worked hard and pitched fairly well. Overall, though, I don't think it was a good game. Too many mistakes.

SS didn't look up to much today. I hereby christen this the "I told you Schoeneweis was a mistake" bandwagon.
BCMike - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:07 PM EDT (#109757) #
Man it sucks when the bullpen blows a game.

I guess we(and more importantly Gibbons) learned that Schoeneweis should probably not pitch 3 days in a row. He obviously didn't have very good command today.
greenfrog - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 07:33 PM EDT (#109758) #
A painful loss, not least because it is so reminiscent of the 2004 Jays and their imploding 'pen. It's one thing to lose a close, well-played game. Games like this one, on the other hand, drive me crazy.

Brett - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 09:18 PM EDT (#109761) #
Wow, there have been some spectacular bullpen implosions very early on this season. Four already today (Rivera, Wickman, Worrell, Jays) plus the Looper/Hoffman disasters earlier in the week.

Obviously, we should be philosophical about the Jays' bullpen - they were awful last year, and badly need someone to step up with a strong season - but it will certainly be an interesting year if the trend continues around the league. No lead is safe!

BTW, Brad Wilkerson just hit for the cycle for the second time in his career.

"Twins slugger Justin Morneau was taken to a Seattle-area hospital on Wednesday after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Mariners reliever Ron Villone, reports Fox Sports Net North. He will undergo a CT scan at the hospital in order to gage the extent of damage caused by Villone's pitch."

I read on The Score's ticker that Derek Jeter also left today's game after being hit in the head by a pitch.
Jim - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 10:24 PM EDT (#109764) #
So....

Would Batista have been available when Speier came into the game had he not been wasted yesterday by pitching with a three run lead in the 9th?

And..

How many batters in a row does SS not have to retire before you ignore the fact that he is left-handed?

Oh well, this stuff happens, but now they need two from the Sox to end Week 1 with a winning record.

James W - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 10:27 PM EDT (#109765) #
The original thinking obviously was that with Crawford, Gathright, Huff and Lee up, bringing in the lefty Schoeneweis was the way to go. When it comes to facing Aubrey Huff, do you want the struggling lefty, or a righty? Seems like "pick your poison" to me.
Stellers Jay - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 10:57 PM EDT (#109769) #
SS shouldn't have been used yesterday with a 4 run lead. Then he would have been fresh and had a decent chance for success today. He was completely gassed, the four pitches to Lee weren't even close to the stike zone.

I was thinking yesterday about the effect of having to throw an innings worth of work over the course of two innings and how much more taxing that is. (Like SS did on Tuesday.) My original thought was that it is considerably more taxing on the arm of a short reliever considering he is going to throw an additional 10 to 12 pitches to warm up again for the second inning and only facing one more batter. Essentially he threw an extra 15 pitches to record one more out. Any thoughts on this?
VBF - Wednesday, April 06 2005 @ 11:14 PM EDT (#109771) #
Although I would have certainly enjoyed the win, philosophically it was a good lesson learned. Schoenweiss isn't unknown to us but his work ethic and the way he works will become more common. John Gibbons too will learn about his bullpen and as the season develops (and as we hopefull play more meaningfull games) will be more familiar with his bullpen and gain confidence in his decisions.

Although a sweep to start the season would've been amazing, I'm happier we made the mistake of perhaps using Schoenweiss too much earlier rather than later. But even that's debatable.
Nolan - Thursday, April 07 2005 @ 03:14 AM EDT (#109775) #
Wow- Roster members, I want to thank you for putting into place those guidlines for gameday threads. I know that the Box was great anyways, but after reading some other game threads from today on other Jays sites, I am happy that the Box has some measures to prevent that kind of forum/message board/whatever.

The last site I checked tonight turned on JP, Gibbons and Schoeneweis after the "bullpen misfunfunction." It was really weird to hear some of the accusations (and name calling as well- I'm quite thankful that this is frowned upon here...) that came up after the blown lead; such as the idea that this proves that JP can't put a bullpen together and that SS pitched quite bad in the last two games as well.

I'm all for criticicm, but much prefer the type found here where opinions are voiced reasonably and calmly and where one bad inning does not provoke a loud outcry.

Thanks...
