It sounds awful, but the Lugnuts behind late homers from DP combo Peralta and Klosterman rallied from a 4 run deficit to an extra-inning victory. The farm affiliates were a perfect 3-0.

Syracuse 7 Columbus 5

Chad Mottola's 3 run homer in the 7th inning broke a 4-4 tie, as the Sky Chiefs defeated the Clippers. Josue Matos started and gave up two 2-run homers in 4.1 innings, but then Matt Duff and Jesse Carlson combined for 3.2 perfect innings of relief to pave the way for the Chiefs comeback in the 6th and 7th innings. Matt Whiteside took advantage of the easy save opportunity by allowing a run without allowing the tying run to reach base. Danny Solano started at second base, and went 2-4 with a homer and a sacrifice fly while John DePastino, John-Ford Griffin and Bryant Nelson had 2 hits each in a 14 hit attack.

Daytona 1 Dunedin 4

Casey Janssen is on a mission, and he may be even closer to achieving it than anyone had thought after another strong showing last night. He gave up a solitary run in 6 innings with 9 strikeouts. The run scored off Janssen came in the second inning after the Cubs led off the inning with a single, double combo. Not to be outdone, the relief corps of Justin James and Davis Romero combined for 3 strong shutout innings.

Adam Lind paced the offense, reaching base three times with a pair of doubles and a walk. Carlo Cota scored the go ahead run in the 6th with a solo shot to left field.

Lansing 5 Quad Cities 4

It took a while for the Lugnuts to pull out the win, but a solo shot from Ryan Klosterman in the 12th did the trick. Starter Juan Perez struggled again giving up 4 runs in 4.1 innings. I wish I could give the first star to the Lugnuts bullpen as they did a fantastic job in relief of Perez. Jordy Templet, Jeremy Harper and Danny Hill teamed up to shut out the opposition for 7.2 innings. Juan Peralta also homered while Yuber Rodriguez walked four times.

Any news on who will be replacing Crozier in Syracuse or are they going to have to live with a rotating cast of light-hitting Jason Alfaro and Julius Matos? Now would be a good time to see if Griffin can handle first base, but that considerably weakens the outfield.

A big thank you to Mike Green for helping me out on this game report. That was clutch Mike.

Hahahahaha. Top-drawer headline, Mike G.

Most of this update is Ryan's work, although I will take credit for the header, at least until the lame pun police come to take me away.

Normally, you'd expect the organization to be reluctant to promote a pitcher twice in one year, but I wonder if Casey Janssen might be an exception at this point. He's not young for his level, he seems to have exceptional poise and command, and while he has not been completely overpowering, he has missed enough bats.

As far as 1B in Syracuse is concerned, could Kevin Barker be a possibility? He isn't tearing it up by any means, but he's a 29-year old with Major League experience languishing in AA.

I think Griffin could be the best bet - especially when Gross is back down to round out the outfield.

Thoughts?

Mike,

You bring up an excellent point about Janssen. I have been wondering that myself. When he was here in Lansing, I thought that New Hampshire would probably be the better place for him, but knew that it would be Dunedin. Quite honestly, with his command, mound presence and the number of pitches that he features, I believe he certainly is polished enough for a promotion to the Eastern League at some point.

I would be curious to see the gun readings on him. In his last start in Lansing, I was totally blown away by him because he was hitting 95 on the gun consistently into the 7th with his fastball. Before that he topped out around 90.

That'll play.

janssen throws 95? wow... very nice.

Janssen is actually following Shaun Marcum's career path. Drafted in adjacent rounds (3rd and 4th) in '04 and '05 and only separated by three months in age, Marcum and Janssen each had fine post-draft debuts at Auburn before starting their first full seasons in Low-A Ball. Marcum split last year between Charleston and Dunedin; Janssen has already done that at Lansing and Dunedin, and is actually moving faster than Marcum did at this stage last year (he's also older for his leagues).

Janssen's fastball was only in the low 90s to begin the season, so it's possible that 95 represents his occasional top speed. But there's another similarity between Marcum and Janssen: they were both two-way players in college (Marcum was a shortstop, Janssen a first baseman) and both are still learning what they're capable of doing on the mound.
Lugnut Fan - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#117670) #
He doesn't throw 95 consistently, but he did in his last start in Lansing. It was a warm day and it was the first warm day that he had actually pitched, so he was able to get loose alot sooner. I think he is more of a 91 to 92 guy, but it was something seeing him hit 95.
Lugnut Fan - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#117671) #
The thing that is really impressive about Janssen in my mind is his K/BB ratio. He threw 46 innings in Lansing and had 38 strikeouts vs. 4 walks. In Dunedin so far, he has thrown 19 innings with 18 strikeouts and 1 walk. In total, that is 65.0 IP, 56 K's and 5 walks for a K / BB ratio of 11.2. Is that any good? haha

There better not be any police -- lame puns are what my Minor League Updates are all about. Without them, Thursday mornings wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. Though On May Four, Four Wins May Be Good For The Affiliates was too much of a reach.

If Janssen throws four more starts without getting hit hard and maintains his control i see now reason why the organization wont move him up to new hampshire however right now jackson and purcey are ahead of him on the depth chart which could be the sticking point
Stellers Jay - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 06:03 PM EDT (#117689) #
There will be room in the NH rotation when Banks and Marcum get moved up to Syracuse (which will happen in the next month at the latest). I think Purcey is going to have to show the ability to control the strike zone before he gets promoted to AA. Jackson has been rounding in to form the last few weeks and looks ready for a promotion when the dominoes fall. JP said a couple of weeks ago that McGowan is due to be in Dunedin by the end of May. A rotation spot will need to be opened up for him.

Lansing Boils? Ewwww!

Has JF Griffin figured something out, or has he just evolved into a 4A hitter? Does he have a future as a Jim Dwyer type? Or could he become something more? He's not exactly young anymore for a prospect.

Mike Green - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#117696) #
It's hard to figure, Magpie. His BABIP is at .336 despite relatively few doubles. That's difficult to sustain for a hitter not blessed with much speed. He has shown a little more power, and a little better strike zone judgment than previously. All in all, I'd guess that he's showing typical modest age-related improvement, and on top of that, he's been a little luckier than last year or for that matter, the year before. He'd probably be usable as part of a platoon if given a shot at the major league level.

The baseball analysts, have some discussion about how the first five picks will play out. Maybe we should have some sort of contest to guess the Jay's choice....?

I noticed on the Baseball America website it mentioned a "jay signee" Leance Soto. Has anyone heard anything about this? Its in the Draft Tracker, at #15 Wade Townsend. Maybe I just missed it being talked about.

Purcey got roughed up tonight... 7 runs in 3 innings

So did Cheng (5 R in 3.1IP) and Keng (3R in 3.1IP) as Lansing is on the wrong side of an old-fashioned beat-down.

On the plus side, Marcum got another win tonite, as NH takes the first half of a doubleheader against Bowie. Middling line tho, 2ER in 5IP, with 4K and 4(!?!) BB.

Gerry - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#117713) #
Purcey pitched four innings with no hits and only one walk. Then the fifth started and three home runs later the roof had fallen in. So Purcey was excellent for four innings and terrible for one.

I hope he just came out of his mechanics and didn't suffer a physical problem.
