1. The updated Jays salary spreadsheet

2. An updated version of the baseball Reference Firefox plugin

1. The Jays salary spreadsheet should finally have all the winter moves included. The starting salary for this year rounds at $73 million, I haven't seen any news about salary deals for a few players though, if you know them or spot any mistakes (there are bound to be some) please drop me a line at the mail address in the spreadsheet or leave a comment in this thread.

2. An update to my Baseball Reference plugin for the firefox browser, so it works with version 1.5. The plugin is very simple, but quite useful if you find yourself wanting to look up player stats regularly. Once it is installed you can highlight a players name in some text, right-click and there will be a 'Baseball Reference' item on the menu, click this and a new tab will open in your browser with a baseball-reference.com search for that player. Hey what can I say, I'm very lazy.

To install this, save the xpi file to your desktop, then do a ctrl-o from firefox on the saved file. You'll need to restart your browser for it to take effect.

A few notes:

1. Halladay's extension to 2010 isn't accounted for in the spreadsheet.

2. 2007 sees 61M committed to only 7 roster spots. Wow. 6 of the remaining spots are currently filled with players who will be arb-eligible. It'll be interesting to see what sort of funny math the Jays use to complete next year's team and stay around 75M in total salary.

3. The Firefox extension doesn't work for me.

Halladay extension should be in the spreadsheet now.

This plug in is just in time for the end of my thesis, baseball reference was invaluable...
Any chance you can make a baseball reference for the search bar? That would be also useful...

I think you can do that from baseball reference itself, somewhere on the 'frivolities page'

"and stay around 75M in total salary"

I don't think the $210 million is still in play. That is, the Jays likely have a new three year plan every year and it's been revised since they made their initial public announcement. There's just no advantage to announcing it to everyone now.

Given what they've done this offseason it wouldn't surprise me at all to see an $85-90 million payroll next year. That is, I don't think the Jays went blindly into this offseason signing everyone and then will head into next offseason and go, 'oh crap, we only have $14 million for a dozen roster spots to fill, maybe we shouldn't have given out those contracts last year'. They're acting today like they'll have more money tomorrow and I suspect that'll be the case (and that's probably part of the sales pitch they gave Burnett, Ryan and Glaus, because $75 million is just an average payroll these days).

Supposing that the $210M *is* still in play, doesn't that leave about $85M for 2007? A bit under $50M last year, $75M this year. I know that the accounting for bonuses comes in here, but even so we should have enough for an overall increase next year.

I completely agree with Pistol, and I think this is exactly the reason why it is silly to talk of dumping Hillenbrand and replacing him with a Pena or Durazo (who are risky at best) just to save a few million dollars. If the Jays can find a significant mid-season upgrade at left field or right field, and if it costs $4-million or $5-million to do it, I'm sure they can find the money. No need to squeeze pennies by dumping a guy who was an all-star last year.

I dunno if you've tried this Cristian, but for the Firefox plugin, when you open this file it should say: "File type cannot be recognized" or something like that, and it should give you two options: "Use web service to find file type" (again, I don't know the exact words) and "Choose from a list" (or something)

Now, click the "choose from a list" option and select Firefox. It should then prompt a box and it's pretty straightforward from there.

The Firefox extension is incredibly convenient for lazy people like me, Gwyn. Much thanks.

If anyone's having problems with it, you actually have to open the extension from File->Open File in Firefox, hence Gwyn's Control-O instruction.

I installed it just fine. However, when I restart Firefox, there is no change to the browser. I uninstalled the plugin then reinstalled it when I thought that maybe b-ref shows up as a search engine (like google or amazon). But it doesn't. When I click on Tools to view my extensions, b-ref claims to be properly installed. However, the options button is greyed out so I can't fidget with any settings. When I click on 'Find Updates' I'm told an error to the extension has occurred. At this point I gave up on the plug in.

I figure it conflicts with one of my existing extenstions or my Firefox theme.

Cristian, You won't see any change in your browser with the plugin installed. What you do is highlight some text (here's one to try out: Halladay) and then right-click. In the menu that comes up you'll now have "Baseball Reference" as one of the options.

I've had this plugin for a while and it's fantastic.

The same greyed-out, error-to-the-extenstion thing happens to me, but it works fine.

For example: highlight Bush's name below, right-click and choose "Baseball Reference" from the menu.

Dave Bush

It should go right to:

Nice. I use the Dictionary Search plugin for the same purpose, to select text and search a site's engine for it -- although I've set it to search Wikipedia and Google Maps and have run out of options in the plugin.

I'll be looking at this to adapt it for other purposes. Thanks.

Cristian - Tuesday, March 28 2006 @ 07:32 PM EST (#143634) #
Thanks guys. My dictionary plugin works similarly. This plugin is a mixed blessing though. Don't believe me? Just highlight my name and see where on baseball reference it takes you.

A good Firefox extension for searching selected text is the Context Search extension. It allows you to search selected text with any of your installed search plugins.

After you've install the Context Search plugin you can add several baseball related searches.

Here's a list of baseball search plugins: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=baseball&submitform=Search

(these search plugins still work even without the Context Search plugin)

I see 19.85 million gone in salary to start 07 and 10 million new money.

New money first, 210 mill = 50 (05) + 75 (06) + 85 (07).

The 19.85 breaks this way; Lily 4 (replaced by Banks), Schoweneweis 2.75 (replaced by Tallet), Speier 2.25 (replaced by Frasor who is replaced by McGowan), Walker .65 (replaced by Janssen), Downs .70 (replaced by Rosario), Hilly 5.8 (replaced by Hinske, Rios goes solo in right), Cat 2.7 (replaced by Griffin or Lydon, maybe even by Santos).

Subtract the 22.2 million we owe in NEW MONEY to guys presently signed and that leaves 7.65. From which comes 1.98 to pay Banks, Tallet, McGowen, etal., WHICH LEAVES the GRAND SUM of $5,670,000.00 for TOTALLY NEW PLAYERS!

Wow! We could sign Hilly back and have him play the guy that collects the magnets the morons will throw on the field on "magnet give away day." Gosh, the offeason before 07 is REALLY GONNA BE A BUZZ!

Well, lets wait 'til this season starts before we worry about next year.

I think your calculations include the Jays paying Molina $7.5 million in '07. I don't think they are likely to pick up his option. That would make budget room of about $12 million, depending upon what you figure Overbay would get in '07. This should get the Jays two good players or one superstar. This along with the chance to pick up two or three draft picks (for Lily, Hilly or SS Loogy), means it might be a pretty good offseason.
