"He's a strike-throwing machine," John Gibbons said. "He's so far ahead of where he ought to be."

Casey Janssen had 42 tickets reserved for friends and family last night; he didn't let them down.

IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
8.0 2 0 0 0 3 0 88-59 3.06

Not a bad line for a guy who was in A ball a year ago. The outing did a lot of good to his career totals too, he now sports a rather nifty 3.06 ERA in 32.1 Innings with a 13/5 K/BB ratio and a terrific 54% groundball percentage.

Star of the Game: Janssen, don't you think?

Unsung Hero: Gregg Zaun was dropped into the DH spot at the last minute and responded with a 3 for 4 night with a run and an rbi. Having all those third basemen around was pretty useful last night as Hinske could step in with Glaus and Hillenbrand needing a night off.

Defensive Play of the Game: Lyle Overbay's snag of a liner from McPherson in the top of the third that was threatening to break the sound barrier, it saved a hit and kept Janssen perfect through the earlier going.

Box Score: right here

Elsewhere in the East: Baltimore finally realised that they are allowed to beat Boston. Erik Bedard had one of his good days, although he seemed very disaffected with Ramon Hernandez. Wakefield pitched well for the Sox but his knuckler was hard to handle, even for the master of the art Mirabelli, and he had a couple of wild pitches. Chris Ray made things interesting in the ninth, giving up a couple of runs, but he avoided a meltdown and came back strong to finish off the Sox. New York took another from Texas as Jorge Posada continued to ride a hot streak with 2 more rbi, he's at .310/.420/513 for the season now. Wang got the win going 8 Innings for two earned runs and Rivera got the save. Tampa Bay lost to Chicago, although Seth McClung had another good start, he has an ERA of 2.50 over his last four starts. Lugo came in in the eighth though and the White Sox got to him for three runs and that was all the help Garland, Cotts and Jenks needed.

I hope this is the start of letting Zaun get into more games  - he really has been solid this season so far.  I'd be limiting Bengie to only starting 1/3 of the games vs. RHP this season.

Great start again by Janssen.  Two starts where the man has looked absolutely amazing, he was varying his pitches again in this outting - It really is amazing to watch his evolution as a player and his pitch selections now vs. what he did in Baltimore is night and day.

A little choked Gibby didn't leave him out there to get the CG for the 9th.  I thought he would at least start and get pulled if he allowed a baserunner with BJ waiting in the wings.

You know it's a shame that we use HLH instead of HRH (Leroy rather than Roy).  His Royal Highness is accurate both in terms of stature and pitching quality.

Gibbons had been using McDonald at short when Janssen started prior to last night.  Putting Adams in there with Escobar on the mound for the Angels worked out well. The rookie has his feet wet, and needs the offensive support more than the good glove now. Next hurdle for Janssen: the Yankees or Red Sox.

Had the Jays better capitalized on their chances and run up a 5-0 lead or so, I'm thinking that Janssen would have pitched the 9th.

It's a testament to how well Janssen pitched in that I had more confidence in him shutting down the Angels in the ninth than BJ Ryan.

With regards to Adams, he looked a lot better in the yield yesterday than he has in the recent past, especially on that play to get the force at second after getting the ball in the hole.  Also, did anyone catch Campbell commenting "oops, I think he just swore" after Sparky popped out?  Never heard an announcer mention something like that before.

Hey Mike G, how about HLH standing for "His LOYAL Highness" since, if all goes well, Doc will be a Blue Jay lifer through 2010, when he will be 33.

As for Janssen, that sound of footsteps you hear is roto managers running to their computers to add Mighty Casey to their fantasy roster.  What a bright side to AJ being injured.

What I found most interesting in the telecast was the profile of his SIX pitches (which seems to have even increased from five from this interview from a year ago) that I assume he can throw for strikes or why else would they spotlight each grip.  My question to the Baux is, how many other major leaguers have 6 different pitches they can throw for strikes?  It seems pretty amazing, especially at such a young age.

Over at The Hardball Times, they have an article up that takes a look at the early season MLB Win-Shares leaders.  An interesting note is that Aaron Hill and Jose Reyes (Mariners) are the second base leaders in defensive win shares with two each.  Also interesting is that Glaus and Wells fail to rank or even get a mention at their positions.  Alex Rios is fifth in outfielders win shares (plus, he has 1.8 defensive win shares while Beltran leads all outfielders with two; I would assume that a CF would be naturally worth more defensive win shares, is this correct?  For example, is an average CF worth more than an average RF?)

My favourite moment was Campbell coaxing a story out of Rance about being wowed by an opponent as a rookie -- Campbell was talking about Janssen pitching to Salmon, who Janssen watched as a kid.  Mullinicks said that Janssen was probably too focused to think about it.  Campbell gently persisted, and Rance admitted to being somewhat starstruck when he faced Goose Gossage (I think that's who he said, but it was late) for the first time.

It was like to friendly guys having a chat -- great work.  My summary doesn't do it justice at all.

NFH, I'm pretty sure Rance said that he was in awe of Gaylord Perry.

Anyways it was indeed a pleasant conversation. Indicative of the solid work that Jamie has been doing on a nightly basis.

You're right, TA, it was Perry.

I'm still sleepy from staying up to watch the whole thing.

With regards to Adams, he looked a lot better in the yield yesterday than he has in the recent past, especially on that play to get the force at second after getting the ball in the hole.

While Adams did make a nice pick to get that ball, he seemed to not show the proper instincts once he got it. He actually looked at first before deciding his best play was to throw to second (a decision he should have made right away). Though they didn't show the replay too closely, Quinlan sure looked safe at second base. And were he called safe, Adams' slight indecision would have been the cause.

My favourite moment was Campbell coaxing a story out of Rance about being wowed by an opponent as a rookie...

Adding to my praise of Mulliniks yesterday, he sure is getting comfortable behind the mike with all this consistent work he's getting. And Campbell seems far more engaged with Mulliniks as his side kick than with the others. It will be hard to see Mulliniks' turn in the rotation end.

See, I took his hesistation as him merely getting into a better position to throw the ball; in my opinion, he was going to second the whole time, but had to hesistate to get a little more turned around for the throw.  You may be right though...   In any case, it was a (semi-) nice play, if not an amazing one.

According to the Star, Bengie's stolen base from Tuesday night has been changed to defensive indifference.  Talk about a let down!
Intricated - Thursday, May 18 2006 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#147129) #
Then Begnie was robbed of a stolen base twice in the past two nights; he looked safe to me on yesterday's failed hit-and-run attempt by Adams, just under the tag by the Angel's infielder.

Just think, he could have doubled his career number of swiped bags in just 2 games!

Dave Till - Thursday, May 18 2006 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#147141) #
I looked up Bengie's career stats at Baseball Reference, and he can be counted on to steal a base every three years. He's right on schedule, and will collect one sooner or later.

It's a good sign when a pitcher can own the same team twice in a row - presumably, they know what's coming the second time. Or perhaps the Angels just can't hit a pitcher like Janssen (just like Lilly regularly beats up on the Red Sox).

VBF - Thursday, May 18 2006 @ 09:14 PM EDT (#147144) #

Blue Jays sign Australian Josh Wells. Apparantly Schilling was trying to lure him to the Red Sox, which has got to count for something.
