The Jays seem to have avoided the Coors Hangover effect.

Fun afternoon at the RC yesterday a good sized crowd having a lot of fun (at least where I was), there was a nice buzz about the place yesterday. They didn't get to see the greatest game ever, but there was plenty going on - mainly thanks to the bullpen. Casey Janssen clearly didn't have his best Anaheim stuff going for him yesterday, but he battled hard and left to an appreciative hand after giving up 4 runs in 6 2/3 Innings. Luckily Seth McClung was back to his normal form for the opposition, after a recent hot streak, and the Jays were able to knock him around for 6 runs in 7 Innings with Glaus and Hinske going deep. The bullpen looked a little shaky after taking over from Janssen, although no runs were given up there seemed to be lots of Rays popping on the basepaths in the later Innings, they had the tying run as close as third in the eighth. Even Sir Robert Victor let a couple of them on -  in between strikeouts.

Star of the Game: Julio Lugo was an impressive 3 for 5 and as he's on both my fantasy teams he earns extra Star of the Game points.

Crazy: Who sings Glaus' striding to the plate song? It's quite growing on me. Mind you I liked Josh Paul's music too yesterday.

Defensive Play of the Game: Apparently Hinske made a spectacular diving catch, some accounts even say game-saving, but I missed it as a late lunch went on a couple of drinks longer than it should have and I didn't make it to the RC until the top of the third.

Defensive Mis-Play: In the Ninth Ryan was far too casual fielding a ball near the first base line and allowed Crawford to reach base ahead of his throw.

Boxscore

Chacin: Will make a minor leage start on Thursday at Syracuse and should return to the rotation next Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Rob don't read this: Dave Bush had a little trouble with the long ball yesterday, and was tagged for 7 runs in 4 Innings by the Mighty Reds. He did strikeout 6 though, and now has a very studly 55/15 K/BB ratio for the year.

What do you have to do to get a win around here: Jake Peavy struck out 16 last night and still lost, the only ball the Braves went for a Home Run and with John Smoltz mowing down Padres left and right that was enough to seal Peavy's fate. Tough job this pitching lark sometimes.

Elswhere in the East: Boston beat the Yankees confortably and the Orioles lost to Seattle with Ontario's own Erik Bedard getting picked on by Richie Sexson.

Today: Halladay looks to take his unbeaten streak to seven as he takes on Lurch at 7:07

Jays have expressed some interest in the Angles' Adam Kennedy. Here is the bit from Fox Sports:

"Jays seeking upgrade The Jays are targeting Angels second baseman Adam Kennedy, and almost certainly would part with first baseman/DH Shea Hillenbrand in an exchange of potential free agents. The Angels need to add offense and could use a proven hitter like Hillenbrand at first, as opposed to another minor-league callup like Kendry Morales. One potential sticking point: Hillenbrand is making $5.8 million, Kennedy $3.35 million. Also, Hillenbrand fits best as a DH, a position the Angels might need to leave open for left fielder Garret Anderson, who is battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The Jays also had interest in the Phillies' Alex Gonzalez before he announced his retirement over the weekend. Gonzalez presumably would have become the backup at short with John McDonald possibly taking over at second for Hill."

I'm not sure of the intended moves but I would assume this meant shifting Hill to shortstop and sending Adams to the bench or down to AAA? The snipet is a bit vague.

Kennedy for Hillenbrand plus greenbacks?  Hmm.

Glaus's coming to the plate song is Crazy Train, by the dark lord - Ozzy Osbourne. It may actually be by his band Black Sabbath. But its a great happy-ish type song.

"Sir Robert Victor". I love that. Maybe B.J. is "the Count."

Rosenthal is, in a lot of ways, the new Gammons: a prolific writer who often pulls trade rumours and speculation out of his, er, hat. Kennedy would be a nice upgrade for the Blue Jays, but he's no shortstop. Presumably, the Jays would move Aaron Hill back to shortstop and send Russ Adams to the bench or Syracuse, perhaps to learn a new position (Mike Green's suggestion of left field still strikes me as eminently sensible). Hill has been terrific at second base defensively, and his bat is starting to come around, so it wouldn't make any sense to bump him from the lineup.

But from LA's perspective, Hillenbrand isn't much help. They need to start rebuilding, since this season appears to be a lost cause for them. If I were in their position, I'd be asking for a Francisco Rosario and Dustin McGowan in exchange for Kennedy, with Hillenbrand coming back just to give them a major-league bat. For Kennedy, who's essentially Orlando Hudson without the glove (.281/.332/.401 career), that would be a pretty steep price. Unless the Angels are really desperate to make a change for change's sake, I can't see this one taking off.

since this season appears to be a lost cause for them

Its only a quarter through the season, and they appear to be in the weakest division in the AL. The Angels have been missing Bartolo Colon, who won the Cy Young award last year, and with Vlad and a stellar bullpen, a few extra moves might help them.

However, I think it's not a good idea for the Jays. Who's our DH then? Is the drop in hitting worth that much for 15 less errors on the year? Zaun won't be hitting .350 for long.
Nigel - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 10:18 AM EDT (#147376) #

To say that Kennedy is Hudson without the glove, sells Kennedy's defense short.  I think Kennedy has generally been considered one of the top defensive 2B in the league for a few years now.  In fact, Toronto's visits to Anaheim the last few times have sparked a Hudson vs. Kennedy defense debate.  I do generally agree with the concept that the idea as floated doesn't make a ton of sense.

For what its worth, if management is considering the thought of bringing in a 2B and moving Hill to short, I would like to see a switch of Adams to second tried first.

DrJohnEvans - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 10:48 AM EDT (#147378) #
Worthy of note:  the Glaus home run was the one that finally hit that damn car out in right centre field.  I've never seen anyone look so relieved as the in-game host when it happened.
Nigel - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 11:21 AM EDT (#147380) #
One other stat for Dave Bush - 10HR in 64 innings or 1.4HR/9.  All of which is pretty much in line with last year's 1.32HR/9.
Mike Green - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 11:28 AM EDT (#147381) #

At the root of Kennedy's potential availability is the development of Howie Kendrick.  The Angels may believe that they have a better chance to win this year with Hillenbrand than with Kennedy. As both are free agents at the end of 2006, it would be a "present for present" trade with the focus on positional needs. Curiously, they're about equal in Win Shares right now.

CaramonLS - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 11:34 AM EDT (#147383) #
Kennedy would be a big upgrade in the field.

A left handed hitting 2B who has some extremely solid defensive skills (he is no Hudson, but he does play a fine 2B).  I'd also be partial to signing an extension for his services.  The Angels can afford to part with him as they've got some more fine prospects waiting in the wings.

I wouldn't even consider the loss of Hillenbrand to be substantial at all.  Rios is vying for full time.  I think Hinske/Zaun/whomever can fill in just fine at DH.  It might also free up a roster spot for Jason Phillips if we decide we need another specialist who can hit left handed pitching who can platoon DH (assuming one of our current inf is down in AAA).

I'd assume it would be Adams down in AAA as well.
Pistol - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 11:42 AM EDT (#147384) #

But from LA's perspective, Hillenbrand isn't much help.

Why not?  They've been miserable so far and are only 6.5 games back.  There's no need to punt the season now.

The Angels have Kendrick in line to replace Kennedy who they're very unlikely to sign after the season.  They're getting a miserable performance at 1B right now from Quinlan and Kotchman (sounds like a law firm) and 3B isn't all that settled either.  Kendrick & Hillenbrand is almost certainly an upgrade over Kennedy and Quinlan/Kotchman.  The Angels were apparently interested in Hillenbrand last year at the deadline so it seems like they value him.

I generally don't put much stock in splits based on the time of the year, but the last three years Hillenbrand has been at an .833 OPS prior to the All Star game and .752 OPS after it.  At .333/.370/.496 now might be a good time to sell high.

What I'm not certain of is whether this helps the Jays.  I guess it depends on how you feel about Adams (I assume that he'd be the one getting replaced if a MI was acquired) and how you'd feel about Hill at SS.  Adams isn't fielding well and his hitting isn't good enough to overcome that right now.  So if that swap were made it'd be essentially Kennedy & Hinske for Hillenbrand & Adams in the Jays lineup.

I'd be asking for a Francisco Rosario and Dustin McGowan in exchange for Kennedy

What teams are out there that need a 2B that are willing to give up a quality prospect for him?  I'm not sure that's realistic.

Chuck - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 11:58 AM EDT (#147388) #
Hillenbrand sure fits the profile of hitters preferred in Anaheim: good batting average, doesn't draw walks, doesn't strike out much.

Hillenbrand plus $1M (to even out the contracts) straight up for Kennedy. No prospects required.

For Anaheim, Hillenbrand seems reliable for an 800ish OPS and has no health concerns. Kotchman and McPherson continue to frustrate in Anaheim. Anderson and Erstad figure to be kinda hurt all year long. Kendry Morales is untested. Kendrick sits in waiting. No one is running away with the west. Sadly, Hillenbrand would help this offense, just as he did for the Jays last year.

For Toronto, Hinkse and Zaun can handle DH duties vs RHP and the floor gets opened for the DH role vs. LHP (the team's lefty-bashing ability can survive a downgrade). MacDonald gets to caddy Hill, the new SS, and stay out of the starting lineup (save to occasionally sub for Kennedy vs a LHP). Adams ends his days as a starting SS. The Jays leverage Hillenbrand's predictably productive first-half.

Seems to make sense all around.

Gwyn - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 12:23 PM EDT (#147392) #
The Orioles have called up good old Canadian Kid Adam Loewen.  Hayden Penn was due to step into the rotation this week, but he has come down with appendicitis.  Loewen will be up in his place.  The Orioles seem to be in their usual state of confusion about whether Loewen will get a start or not, he last threw in the minors on the 18th, so today would be his normal day to start, The Orioles website has Halama down as the probablt starter though.
Thomas - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 12:35 PM EDT (#147393) #
Here's an article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press on how Corey Koskie is adjusting to his new team.

I'm not sure an offer of Rosario and McGowan is realistic, either. As stated, Kennedy's a free agent and Anaheim will almost certainly let him go with Kendrick nipping at his heels. Seeing as they stand to lose him for nothing, if they can get some return for him it's certainly worth trading him. A potential trade depends a lot, I believe, on Stoneman's decision of whether Anaheim is still in contention, as well as how he believes Kendrick will fare against major league pitching.

It's premature to call Anaheim's season over, but Stoneman might believe that Kotchman/Morales/Quinlan are more comparable to Hillenbrand than Kendrick is to Kennedy at this point in time. If that's the case a deal is unlikely. Otherwise, it's one that makes sense for both teams and Toronto would likely have to add some cash and maybe a "B" prospect, but Rosario and McGowan would tilt this swap heavily in Anaheim's favour.

Mike D - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 02:50 PM EDT (#147406) #

An argument in May 2006 that Erubiel Durazo is more valuable than either Hillenbrand or Hinske can only reflect an uncritical acceptance of caricature-worthy "look at me, I value walks" dogma.  He is out of shape, slump- and injury-prone, and cannot play even one inning of defence.  Shea and Eric are far more durable and versatile.  And yes, in their 2006 incarnations, they also hit much better than does the Holy Grail.

A Hillenbrand-Kennedy trade (and I agree with those that think Jordan's assessment of Kennedy's trade value is too rosy) might make sense if the Jays believe that Hill is a substantial defensive upgrade over Adams at short.  Offensively and defensively, I actually think that Hill and Kennedy will be similar players for the rest of the season if Hill stays at second, since he may well out-hit AK and will provide glovework that's almost as good.  Adams is unlikely to be even mediocre defensively over the second half.

But if Hill isn't similarly excellent as a defensive shortstop, it doesn't make as much sense.  Then, you're giving up a key component of your offensive depth for two very, very modest upgrades (Hill to Kennedy and Adams to Hill).

Just because the Jays haven't suffered too many offensive injuries doesn't mean they won't.  I love their depth as it stands now.  If you're going to move Shea in his walk year, why not try to acquire a true shortstop or a power arm in relief?  Both would come in handy and neither are necessarily available from the minor league ranks.

Newton - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 03:21 PM EDT (#147409) #

The Durazo/Pena/Choi debate of the late off-season rears its ugly head once again.

Any of these 3 could have been tucked away in the minors at minimal expense and provided an additional bat if/when a trade opportunity/injury involving Hillenbrand or Hinske materialized.

Unfortunately we don't have one of the 3 aforementioned guys waiting in the wings, otherwise a Kennedy for Hillenbrand swap would be a no-brainer, and likely is in any event.

Mike Green - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#147410) #

Hill's defence at short is good.  He's quick, and has a fine arm and instincts.  The price for a shortstop who fields as well as Hill does at second, and hits as well as Adam Kennedy, would be much higher than Hillenbrand.

At this point, the team is deeper at the corners (Hillenbrand and Hinske) than in the middle infield. (John McDonald).

Pistol - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 03:26 PM EDT (#147411) #
Furthermore, the Jays depth at the corners in the minors (Hattig, Baker, JFG) is better than the depth in the MI (Roberts, Santos).
Mike D - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 03:57 PM EDT (#147415) #
Kennedy is 7 for his last 46 (.152), and his 2002 power is pretty clearly a mirage.  I'd make sure he's healthy before exploring it further.
Adrock - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 04:39 PM EDT (#147420) #

I, for one, as well as every other fan in section 105, was glad that Adams was out of the game.

The one proper throw he made was when he was slightly hurried, and had to make a strong throw.  He had one other toss in the dirt that Overbay scooped.

He is clearly losing the mental battle on his throwing right now.  I wouldn't want to give up on him, but his throws are really scary , and if he keeps making an error every 3 games the Jays will be hardpressed to stay in contention.

On an unrelated note, sitting in the front row in section 105 is a lot of fun.  You can heckle the bullpen guys, or even get candy.  Rudy Lugo threw us a tootsie roll and some Red Vines from the pink knapsack they keep filled with candy in the seating area.

I couldn't tell the Devil Ray relievers apart, but it was fun to ask them about Mons Venus, and answer the question 'What holiday is this, anyway?".  I was impressed that Walker (or at least I think it was Walker) was curious enough to ask about our wacky Canadian traditions...

Chuck - Tuesday, May 23 2006 @ 04:59 PM EDT (#147423) #
I remember once, back in the day  at Exhibiton Stadium, having front row access to the Angels' bullpen. I was surprised by some players' willingness to talk.

I remember telling Dickie Thon that he should be starting instead of Bert Campaneris and that he'd eventually get his chance. He was very professional about it, defending the obviously washed up Campaneris (I wouldn't have expected otherwise). Thon never got much of a chance with the Angels but seemed to be a star in the making in Houston before being hit in the eye by a Mike Torrez pitch. He returned, but was never the same.

Oh, and why was Thon even in the bullpen? While he was busy not starting in place of Bert Campaneris, he was serving as a bullpen catcher.

To briefly branch away from the trade rumours (although the are fun)..... It was reported by Jordan Bastian on bluejays.com today that the Jays have actually already passed Josh Towers through waivers, and if he struggles again tomorrow against Tampa, he'll be shipped off to Syracuse:

<i>"If Towers continues his slide, a move to the bullpen could be pending, or perhaps even a trip down to the Minors. Prior to his win over Tampa Bay, Toronto exposed Towers to waivers, which he cleared. That means the Jays could send him to Triple-A without any fear of losing the pitcher to another club. "</i>

Here are some Equivalent Averages* for you:

Adam Kennedy:
2002: .280
2003: .269
2004: .271
2005: .273

Shea Hillenbrand:
2002: .271
2003: .261
2004: .271
2005: .277

Eric Hinske:
2002: .293
2003: .266
2004: .239
2005: .269

Hillenbrand and Kennedy are virtual equals, offensively, with Hinske not far behind.  I would probably rank the three players: Kennedy, Hillenbrand, Hinske (assuming that Hillenbrand, if pressed, could play the outfield corners with Hinskian aptitude).

Kennedy is an established .270 EqA hitter.  As a point of reference, major league secondbasemen hit for a .261 EqA in 2005.  Orlando Hudson was .259; Aaron Hill was .261; Russ Adams .257.

On its face, a straight Kennedy for Hillenbrand swap would help the Jays (Kennedy hasn't had and adjusted OBP below .350 since 2001, topping out at .376 in 2005).  Essentially, Kennedy hits as well as Hillenbrand and can play second base.

I would be in favour of such a trade, but it seems to be extremely risky.  With Hinske in the lineup and Adams (presumably) in Syracuse, any injury to Overbay, Hinske, Glaus, Catalanotto or Rios would likely press Reed Johnson into everyday duty.  This is quite likely, and the upgrade from Adams to Kennedy could be largely subsumed.

*Baseball Prospectus' offensive superstat, park-factored, league adjusted, more accurate that runs created or OPS+, etc., etc.  Don't want this to be about EqA.  Just trust it.

Rudy Lugo threw us a tootsie roll and some Red Vines from the pink knapsack they keep filled with candy in the seating area.

And he only missed you by three feet!  His control is improving.

Since the rookie in the pen is supposed to stock the candy and gum, I am assuming that the Devil Rays just assign each guy one day a week.
