Here's some Friday Photo of the Day mojo for Alex Rios, in the hopes that he can get out of the hospital and down to Pittsburgh to participate in the All-Star festivities.  And if he adorned all of your desktops to send out a Get Well Soon vibe, I'm sure it would make a difference.

This is one of my favourite photographs so far in 2006 -- he looks so much more "ready" at the plate than he did last year:

I agree. Body language tells a lot and you can often pick out the rookies just by how they go up and stand at the plate. Sparky used to show his nervousness and lack of confidence pretty well and you can still read it in Adams and Hill from time to time. You can see when they are concerned, defensive and clueless.

Sometimes it's just reading the player's focus and mindset and you can see when a player is 'locked in'. Shea and Bengie are most clear when are getting lazy and are just swinging to make contact without a plan of how to hit the ball well. Perhaps it's a 'contact hitter' thing. Vernon has had his spells of this too, and any run of failure, or slump, will usually show up in a hitter's expression at the plate. Rios probably felt like he was in a prolonged slump the last couple years, not doing what he believed he could do.

Nice to see that weight isn't on his shoulders now. But how's that 'superbug' infection?
