The most over-used and misunderstood phrase of any early baseball season is easily "on pace for." In fact, announcers around the majors are on pace to use that phrase forty-seven billion times this week (roughly, that is).

So let's over-use it in a misunderstood sort of way ourselves. For instance, did you realize that just one or two (or in one case three) games into the MLB season ...

  • Josh Bard laughs at the magic of hitting .400, and is on pace to double that and hit .800 ...
  • Many players are "on pace" to hit 162 homers, but Edgar Renteria and Adam Dunn will each hit 324 dingers ...
  • Speaking of sluggers, Richie Sexson is on his way to 405 RBI this season ...
  • Joe Nathan and Saloman Torres are each in line to save every single game for their 162-0 teams ... They are also two of 23 pitchers around MLB to have appeared in all (okay, both) of their team's games so far ...
  • Kenny Lofton, Hanley Remirez and Willy Tavares are each on pace to steal no less than 324 bases ...
without being caught a single time!
  • Tony Pena Jr. is looking at 324 triples, while Miguel Cabrera is on his way to a monster 486-base hit season, with an OPS of 2.247, which will be good for fifth in the majors behind Pena, Dunn, Brian McCann and Paul Konerko.

What else has jumped out at you -- in, you know, a completely misunderstandable, over-used sort of way?

Don't have the time right now to work it out, but I'm terrified to know what type of stats Burnett's would translate to after one day.

Looks like that nice opening, perfect record is going to be 1-1 awful fast.

Before today's game, Craig Monroe is on pace for a strikeout in every at bat..... well he already has a walk and a groundout under his belt today, but also one K.

After Monday, Lyle Overbay was hitting .500, which puts him on a pace to hit 81.000 for the year.

For fun I checked ESPN where they project out players for 162 games.

Janssen - 324 IP, 162 SO and a 0 ERA before todays game, but after not appearing he dropped to just 189 IP with 81 SO's.  Still better than the Jays best relief season (Eichhorn who threw 157 IP with just a 1.72 ERA in '86).

Ah, we can all dream.  If Janssen does stay in the pen all year I hope he gets 2 - 3 IP each time as that'll help keep his arm strength up I'd figure for a rotation move next year.

If he can manage to start 35 games this season, Felix Hernandez could throw over 400 strikeouts.

After 2 games, there are four players tied for being on pace for 162 steals.  Kenny Lofton has to be really upset about that as just yesterday he was on pace for 324 steals.

Albert Pujols is on pace for zero HR and zero RBI. Despite this, he'll still be more valuable then Juan Pierre.

Miguel Cabrera: 378 Hits, 108 doubles, 108 homers, 270 walks, and only 54 Ks. Oh, and 324 RBI.

Thank god I got him on both my fantasy teams.

To expand on paulf's Albert Pujols stats, he is on pace to get 54 hits this season, all doubles, for a .100 BA and .200 slugging percentage.  His team, last year's World Series champs, are on a pace to go 0 - 162, easily surpassing the '62 Mets for futility.  Oh, and the Cardinals outfield is on a pace to make 162 errors this season, as well.

And let's not forget the Mariners' Felix Hernanez.  Assuming he gets 35 starts this year, he's on pace for a monster season with 420 K's, 280 IP, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP, issuing just 70 walks and 105 hits for the season.  Wow!
