Travis Snider was called up to New Hampshire yesterday and went 1-5 in his debut.

You'd think that Adam Lind is next in line for a promotion as he was back from a sore neck last night and went 2-4.

Lehigh Valley 2 at Syracuse 4

Adam Lind, come on down. Or up, as its probably more appropriate. Lind was back from a stiff neck and went 2-4, raising his line to .370/.417/.630. As Buster Olney wrote, Lind felt that he was off last season, and solved the problem in the offseason, which apparently was shifting weight issue

It sure looks like Davis Romero is back. After missing the 2007 season with an arm injury he now has 13 Ks in 11.2 innings after going 4 scoreless innings giving up just a hit and walk. The one poor appearance that Romero had this season was attributed to a bad mound.

On the other hand Brandon League struggled with control. He gave up 3 walks in his 2 innings, allowing 2 runs. The ground ball was still working as 4 of the 6 outs were on the ground against one in the air (and 1 K).

The offense was led by Buck Coats who hit a 3 run homer in the 5th inning.

New Hampshire 9 at Portland 3

The Fisher Cat offense took it to Michael Bowden and the rest of the Seadog staff last night banging out 14 hits. Jacob Butler let the way going 4-5, including a HR and double. He had 5 RBIs on the night. Ryan Patterson also had 4 hits, with 2 of the hits being doubles. Anthony Hatch also chipped in with 2 doubles.

Travis Snider went 1-5 with 3 Ks in his AA debut. He'll DH until his shoulder is ready to play the OF. At that point it'll be interesting to see who gets squeezed as NH already has 4 OFs who are splitting time and DHing.

Scott Richmond was the benefactor of good run support, getting the win after 5 innings. He gave up 5 hits and 4 walks. Seth Overbey pitched three scoreless innings before Daryl Harang came on in the ninth to close things out.

Dunedin 4 at Sarasota 8

In his second game this year Matt Lane hit a HR as part of a 2-4 night. JP Arecibia and Jesus Gonzalez each had two hits.

Check out Gerry's Arencibia interview.

Peoira 3 at Lansing 6

Kyle Ginley lowered his ERA to 1.19 giving up no earned runs (1 unearned) in 5 innings. He had 3 Ks and 2 BBs on the night. Ginley should be heading to Dunedin by midseason.

Moises Sierra and Darin Mastroianni each hit solo home runs for the Nuts. 2007 draftees Jackson, Ahrens, and McDade each had a hit while Tolisano had 2 walks.

3 Stars!:
3 - Davis Romero
2 - Ryan Patterson
1 - Jacob Butler

It's his elbow though right?

  • Nice to see some bats finally awakening in New Hampshire.
  • League and Romero both threw over 40 pitches.  I'd like to see League stretched out and piggy back starters if he's going to be in the minors.  It may be that League is not well suited to brief relief appearances due to spats of wildness.  Regardless, it would be nice to have the option of bringing up either of them for spot starts, if necessary.  Kane Davis would have to be outrighted back to Saracuse if he was called up for an emergency start.
  • A dozen high school hitters were selected prior to Justin Jackson in last year's draft.  Five have graduated to full season ball.  None have had the offensive success that Jackson has had.  Jackson is arguable the most valuable defensive player of the bunch too - it was just a matter of whether he could develop as a hitter.  I wonder if the draft were today, whether Jackson would be a top 5-10 pick.  Great work by JP and the scouting staff.  (Interestingly, a popular first round mock pick for the Jays was Peter Kozma - another true shortstop - looks like he's adjusting to full season ball quite well.  He's currently sporting a 900+ OPS as well.)
  • Prior to this season, I was not concerned about Travis Snider's K rate.  It is becoming worrisome though.  He's striking out close to 40% of his PA right now.  That's ridiculous.
  • I hope to see Manny Rodriguez promoted to Dunedin soon - perhaps when Rolen comes up.  Regardless, I love the nickname Man-Rod.

The article linked at the top of the page said shoulder, although maybe they got it wrong.

I was actually thinking about the same thing last week.  I'm not sure he'd be a top 10 pick, but I think he might be in the 20-30 range now.

Equally impressive is the fact that it took Jackson 16 games to commit his first error.

Ahrens hasn't looked too bad either particularly in controlling the strioke zone.

Man-Rod is the nickname equivalent of "Saturday Night Fever" pants, a little too much presence to be aesthetic.  In any event, I like his name because of the lineage; it would be the current equivalent of Babe Gehrig.

Justin Jackson is indeed looking very good, and looks to be a very good selection for his draft placing.  Kozma is off to a great start, and probably a little better than Jackson because of his strike zone control (10/12 W/K in 59 at-bats), but he is also more than 6 months older.  That's a big deal for a prospect under 20.

Something I find interesting about Jackson so far - last year, in 166 ABs, he had 4 extra base hits (1 2B, 1 3B, and 2 HRs).  This year, in 62 ABs, he has already doubled that total (5 2Bs, 2 3Bs, and 1 HR).

"Snider Called Up"

Now that was a misleading title.
smcs - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#183254) #
Correct me if I am wrong, but did Davis Romero not have a torn labrum, the same injury to Casey Janssen?

I was thinking the same thing, HH. I guess it's technically correct, but when I see "called up" I think "to the Show." Maybe it should be Snider Promoted?

I believe Davis Romero had TJ surgery.  I think Chi-hung Cheng had a torn labrum.

Romero had a torn labrum.  Many sources out there - here's one.

I modified it the heading.

Always interesting how the same thing can mean different things to different people.

ramone - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 02:14 PM EDT (#183263) #

This makes me have some hope for a succesful return for Jannsen, as everything I've read points to a torn labrum being the worst thing a pitcher could ever have.  Over at the mockingbird there was an excellent post on the very low level of success rate for pitchers returning from this type of surgery.  Hopefully Davis can keep pitching well and make a full return from this.

A side note, Lind is playing for Syracuse in today's afternoon game, I was hoping he would be a call up for tonights game, hopefully soon.

Eric Nielson has been deleted from the NH roster and added to the Saracuse roster.  I guess there's more than one way to get promoted, because he hasn't done a thing at AA.
ramone - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 02:22 PM EDT (#183265) #
Is that because Matt Watson is on the DL, and perhaps anticipating an Adam Lind call up?  Nielson is an odd call up choice though, Aaron Matthews must be wondering when his turn will come.
ChicagoJaysFan - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 02:26 PM EDT (#183266) #
Nielsen is organizational fodder - he doesn't get called up / demoted because he's earned it but because a body is needed.
Gerry - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#183268) #
Even with Watson on the DL Syracuse has four other outfielders, Wayne Lydon, Buck Coats, Adam Lind and Russ Adams.  Nielsen will probably be a backup and play once a week.
timpinder - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 03:37 PM EDT (#183270) #
The good news is that Lind just keeps on hitting (he's 1 for 2 with a walk so far today), but the bad news is he's still doing it with Syracuse.  I had high hopes that I'd be watching his sweet swing tonight.  What are the Jays waiting for?  I'm staunchly convinced that Lind is going to be a big and immediate improvement over Stewart, Inglett or Scutaro in the lineup.
Pistol - Tuesday, April 22 2008 @ 03:37 PM EDT (#183271) #
And Lind is surely going to be called up.

Traveled north to Portland on Tuesday and managed to get a few shots of Snider.

You can check out the photo gallery HERE.

I'll be sure to get many more shots on Thursday when the FCats return home to Manchester.

Peace.

Thanks for the pictures.  With the shades, the facial hair and the nasty look, Snider looks like he might have walked off the set of Reservoir Dogs.

You're welcome!

Actually, Travis didn't take too kindly to me calling him Mr. Pink.

Peace.

Thanks for those photos.

Despite the sharing the surname, I had always assumed Daryl wasn't related to Aaron Harang. I guess I figured I would have heard something about it, so it's interesting to read that they are in fact brothers.
