Las Vegas had 19 hits in their win.  Angel Sanchez had three of them and 7 RBI's including a grand slam.  Sanchez has been hot recently with the bat, hot streak or new level of performance?  Time will tell.  Dunedin as a team had three hits but still won on a Jesus Gonzalez home run.  Lansing and the GCL Jays both lost in extra innings.

Las Vegas 16  Omaha 8

Las Vegas jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead.  They scored two runs in the first inning on a 2 run single from Brian Dopirak.  They added a third run in the second inning, Angel Sanchez doubled and Howie Clark singled him home.  David Purcey was on the mound for Vegas and he gave up a run in the second.  Las Vegas got that back in the fifth on another home run by Travis Snider and more on a grand slam by Angel Sanchez Sanchez came to bat again in the sixth with the bases loaded and this time he doubled to clear the bases.  Later in the inning Aaron Mathews doubled in two more to make the score 13-1.  Purcey ran into trouble in the seventh and he gave up a grand slam of his own and the lead was down to 13-6.  Both teams tacked on runs in the last few innings with Vegas finishing with the 16-8 win.

Jason Lane went 4-5; Angel Sanchez was 3-5 with 7 rbi's; Brian Dopirak and Aaron Mathews had three hits each.

New Hampshire - night off

Daytona 1  Dunedin 2

This game was tied at zeroes through seven innings.  With one out in the eighth Dunedin starter Ryan Page gave up a single.  Then on a pick-off attempt Page threw the ball away allowing the runner to go to third.  Daytona pulled off a succesful squeeze to go up 1-0.

Dunedin headed to the bottom of the eighth with only two hits in the game but Jesus Gonzalez followed a two out walk with his twelfth home run to give the Jays a 2-1 lead. The Jays called on Trystan Magnuson for the save and he walked the lead-off hitter.  He followed with a ground out, a single and a strikeout and Tim Collins came on for the last out, and the save.  Ryan Page gave up an unearned run over eight innings, he gave up seven hits and didn't walk anyone.

Dunedin won with only three hits.

Dayton 2  Lansing 6 - 13 innings

Lansing went ahead 2-0 in the second inning. Justin McClanahan and Balbino Fuenmayor singled to lead off the inning.  Then with two outs Kenny Wilson and Tyler Pastornicky each singled in a run.  In the fourth Dayton loaded the bases with no-one out on an error and two walks.  That was followed by a double to tie the game and leave runners on second and third with no-one out.  But starter Chris Holquin buckled down to get out of the inning with no further damage.  Thereafter neither team could score despite each team having some chances.  Finally in the 13th inning Dayton put up four runs and that was enough for the win.

Yohermyn Chavez had three hits, the only Lugnut with more than one.

Auburn - night off

GCL Phillies 6  GCL Blue Jays 3 - 11 innings

The Phillies scored three runs in the eleventh off loser Tyler YbarraRyan Shropshire had started and gave up a run in five innings.

Dont know if its been mentioned yet, but the Baseball America prospect chat from the 7th mentions a couple Jays. They say to keep an eye on Carlos Perez of the GCL Jays, says he is the best Latin American prospect in the system. Also says Arencibia may have a hard time sticking with his .300-.320 OPB. Starting to think Arencibia may just be another Barajas with a little more power and a little less glove.

Mike Wilner, on his baseball today show on the Fan, had the Las Vegas 51's broadcaster on to talk Vegas prospects.  To summarize he said Angel Sanchez was good offensively but sub-par defensively.  He said Sanchez had trouble moving to his right and he also said Sanchez had a weak arm.  Arencibia was the opposite, great defense, good power, terrible batting average.  He liked Dopirak, said he uses all fields and has looked good at the plate but is a bit rough at firstbase.

I am sure a podcast version will be available soon.

Interesting, I always thought and had heard that Sanchez was a great glove,  kinds of weakens the diamond in the rough I thought was there.  Good to hear Arencibia has great defense, now if he could only learn that 4 balls means a walk.

Could be in for some ugly defense in september in games in which the outfield is Lind, Snider and Wells and the infield includes EE, Dopirak and possibly Sanchez.

One guys opinion...  not sure anybody thought Scutaro would be the offensive and defensive force he is at short.

I work with statistics for a living...  Both human judgement and statistics are flawed....  If I was going to make an assessment on Sanchez I'd get 10 scouts, 10 baseball stat whiz's, 5 broadcasters/journalists, and 5 fans.  And combine their opinions.   Basically any one opinion is flawed but if you gather many, many opinions from different types of sources you may have a chance of finding out the truth.  From what I hear the progressive organizations like Boston and Tampa allready do this.

I also heard Sanchez had a good glove, I remember Jeff Blair blogging in spring training on how much he liked his defence. But again thats just one opinion... A few guys I would love to see here in september are Snider (obviously), Sanchez, Dopirak, and Zach Stewart. If Sanchez shows any signs he could handle the job at SS, I say offer Scutaro arbitration and hope he leaves, take the two picks and run. This team probably isnt going to win next year anyways might as well start stock piling picks to build around some of our good prospects and young players.

A Kansas City Royals Scouting report on Sanchez from January 2008. He was ranked #19 on this list "Scouting: Angel Luis Sanchez was drafted all the way back in 2001, in the 11th round of the draft out of Puerto Rico. Sent to the Royals Gulf Coast League affiliate his first two years, Sanchez just flat out didn't get it done with the bat. But he had two particularly good tools on his side -- defense and arm. He was sent to Burlington for the next two seasons, and although he improved slightly with the bat, it still wasn't enough to warrant much attention. However, his defensive tools were still exceptional, and he was making strides and becoming a more consistent fielder. It was 2005 when he hit the prospect map, posting a .765 OPS in the California League. While he was more recognized, prospectors realized this was the California League, and he had to prove that he could hit in Double-A before being taken too seriously. Sanchez did indeed have a respectable season in Wichita, and cemented himself among the Royals best prospects. Unfortunately, he went down with shoulder surgery during Spring Training, and never made it out to the diamond. When healthy, Sanchez is an unbelievable defender, similar to what we see in Tony Pena, Jr. in both range and arm strength. He's an advanced contact hitter with the ability to talk a walk, although hasn't hit for much power to date. Angel is a fairly well built guy, and should be a gap-to-gap doubles hitter as he matures physically. Take: It' s certainly debatable as to whether Sanchez should be this high on the list, but my gut feeling for him is good. I certainly don't ever expect him to be a plus offensive player, but his stellar defense and decent on-base skills should allow him to be, at the least, a backup infielder in the major leagues. With a strong start in Omaha, he could see significant time in Kansas City later in the summer. http://royaltower.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html Sounds like if he ever got the bat going (maybe this is a breakout year?) he could be a solid SS

I wouldn't want Sanchez as the first option for a starter, but I'd much prefer it to wasting money on the Cabrera's of the world. It might come down to that given how weak the field is.

that said, I'm all about having him do McDonald's job for a million and a half less.

I think Sanchez had TJ surgery on his throwing arm since that glowing report on his arm strength.

Is this the same Arencibia that has 10 errors and 10 PBs?
