What a difference a day makes for Adam Loewen.

Colorado Springs 11    Las Vegas 6

Marc Rzczynski took a small step towards not sucking on Sunday.  While he allowed six earned runs (7 total) in six and two thirds, he struck out seven against just one walk.  Though on the flip side, he nailed three batters.  His GO:FO was 8:2 so that was good.  Look, I said it was a small step, ok.  Oh, and he made an error.  Ok, no steps.  He stood still.

The 51s scored 6 runs and all came courtesy of 3 RBI days from Brian Dopirak and Jorge Padilla.  Dopirak's was part of a 3 hit day.  Brad Emaus and Brett Wallace each had a hit while Jarret Hoffpauir was 2-for-5 with a double.

New Hampshire 6    Erie 1

Remember yesterday when we were falling all over Adam Loewen's 5-for-5 day?  Well, he took a ride to the other end of the spectrum with a Golden Sombrero on Sunday.  That's quite a swing.  Crazy game, this baseball.

Darin Mastroianni, Shawn Bowman, and Callix Crabbe each had two hits while David Cooper picked up three including a double and a homer.  He's hitting .194 over his last ten games but slugging .528.  Weird.

Zach Stewart started this one and was quite good in moving his record to 4-1.  He went seven innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks while striking out five.  Tim Collins finished things off with a two-strikeout ninth.

Dunedin- Off; All-Star Break

Lansing 3    Burlington 2

The Lugnuts managed just three hits but pulled one out thanks in large part to Ryan Goins who had two hits, including a double and two RBI.  Bradley Glenn had the other base hit while Kevin Ahrens was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.  He'll be in my slo-pitch league by August at this rate.

Ryan Shopshire pitched very well in going seven frames and allowing a run on five hits with three strikeouts.  Steve Turnbull had his 16th save.

DSL Blue Jays 8    DSL Braves 7

Lots of offense in this one.  Tanguard Perez swung the big bat with three hits and 4 RBI while Gonzalo Gonzalez had two hits and scored three runs.  Cesar Barazarte was six months old when Joe Carter touched 'em all.  On Sunday he had two hits, a homer, stole a base and  had three RBI.

Richard Rodriguez started and wasn't good.  But Luis Zerpa was brilliant in relief allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out six in four innings.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Ryan Shopshire- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 K

2nd Star: Zach Stewart- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

1st Star: David Cooper- 3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI

Over the last month Stewart has made 6 starts, and gone into the 6th in each of them - 35.2ip 29h 13r 2hr 12bb 29k 3.28era 1.15whip. I often leave Stewart out when discussing the future of the rotation, but it can only help as future trade bait to have as many guys as possible at AA/AAA that appear capable of handling a starter's load effectively. He must have an innings limit in 2010 after throwing 105 last year, so I wonder if the team would consider calling him up as a relief pitcher after another 10 starts or so as we approach late August.

Loewen is really making his case to be added to the 40 and become the Jays 4th OF in 2011. There are going to be a lot of happy Canadians if he succeeds and shows anything near what Ankiel was able to do when he first arrived as a hitter.

Batters Box poster Meta4 has a thread up on the RealGM board keeping track of Jays draft picks that have been signed:

http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=123&t=1018051

I think its a nice idea for the community to keep track of. So far the following Jays picks have signed:

1s 38 Noah Syndergaard RHP Legacy HS, Mansfield, Texas Texas
2 61 Griffin Murphy LHP Redlands (Calif.) East Valley HS Calif.
3 93 Christopher Hawkins 3B North Gwinnett HS, Suwanee, Ga. Ga.
3s 113 Marcus Knecht OF Connors State (Okla.) JC Okla,
34 1026 Tyler Powell RHP Belmont-Abbey (N.C.) N.C.
35 1056 Dan Barnes RHP Princeton N.J.

I agree it's a good idea to monitor the signees but some of those are unconfirmed and were not proven in the link you gave either. I can confirm Syndergaard, Knecht and Barnes have both signed and Nicolino has said he will, but I think we need to wait until we have links pointing to newspaper articles specifically saying they've signed on the dotted line... or wait for the official releases from the Jays... or the short-season rosters that will be released on Wednesday (Auburn) and Sunday (GCL Jays).

Murphy, Hawkins and Powell are also confirmed.

So the 'must sign' guys (picks that are not protected) are...

#38: Syndergaard (signed)
#69: Kellen Sweeney
#113: Marcus Knecht (signed)

So 2 of the 3 'must sign' guys are signed. Interesting to see 4 of the 9 guys from the first 3 rounds signed already too. Good thing.

John Lott from the National Post was in Erie this weekend, as was I, and he has filed his first story.  It is about Kyle Drabek.   John was working on three stories.  I think a second one will cover the Canadian angle and the third might be on Collins and Magnuson although I am not 100% sure on that one.

I interviewed Luis Rivera, pitching coach Tom Signore, and Brian Jeroloman.  Look for those and my scouting report later this week.  Video to follow next week.

the short-season rosters that will be released on Wednesday (Auburn) and Sunday (GCL Jays).

Shows how much a prospect-geek i am....i found this bit of news very tastey. I'm anxious to know how those rosters fill out.

Article on Kellen Sweeney being drafted.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100608/SPORTS08/100608017/-1/BUSINESS04/

“I had to wake up a little bit, but it didn’t take too long. My sister told me, ‘You got drafted.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, OK.’ She said, ‘Don’t you even want to know by who?’ She said Toronto and I said ‘Sweet!’”

Now, Sweeney will have to decide between signing a pro contract or going to the University of San Diego, where he has accepted a scholarship.

He said he doesn’t know in which direction he will go.

“We have to negotiate the contract,” he said. “I’ll have to wait and see what happens there.”

John Sickles has his "Toronto Blue Jays Draft Review" on his site - go see it - he's quite high on our selections. Now, if only we can sign three or four of them for a change.
Mike Green - Monday, June 14 2010 @ 08:32 PM EDT (#216983) #
I agree with John Sickels most of the time, but not this one. The description of McGuire as a safe pick is the kind of thing that drives me nuts.  Very few pitchers are "safe" picks in the first half of the first round- the overall record of first round pitchers is so much worse than for first round hitters that a "safe" first round pitcher is one with excellent stuff, good control, no injury risk above the usual and good command and composure.  David Price would be an example.  Many drafts don't really have one.

I am not saying that one should never draft a pitcher in the first half of the first round.  Sometimes, the best available pitcher is a better risk than any of the available position players.  That, to my mind, was not the case here and it was not a close call.  Anyways, the draft is done and hopefully a couple of the high schoolers with good stuff develop over time.

After reading Mike Greens' post, let me just go on record as saying how much I like the Jays draft - even the Deck

McGuire pick which I initially was melancholy about, I understand in context to all the projectable young Talent

drafted - I like this draft better than any of JP's draft ( I know that the new regime is doing an excellent job of

resuscitating the high school crop of 2007 - which could become a very good draft) and depending on how the

signing period goes, 2010 has a chance to be the best Jays draft ever.

I know that the new regime is doing an excellent job of resuscitating the high school crop of 2007 - which could become a very good draft

That's hilarious. So even if Ahrens, Jackson, and/or Eiland turn into something, it will be because of AA's regime saving JP's draft...the man simply cannot win.

I don't think it's unfair to give Anthopoulos et al some of the credit for how Ricciardi's draft picks turn out... as long as we also give Ricciardi and his guys some of the credit for how the players they inherited turned out. Guys like Halladay, Wells, Hudson, Rios, League...
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 15 2010 @ 03:57 PM EDT (#217007) #
Ah, yes.  The blame/credit game.  At least with baseball, no birds are hurt (unless Dave Winfield is involved), no livelihoods are taken away and no pristine environments are sullied. Maybe with the stakes less significant, we can agree that predecessor and successor regimes both play a significant role in the development (for good or bad) of a prospect drafted by the predecessor and in the system when the successor takes over.

MatO - Tuesday, June 15 2010 @ 04:12 PM EDT (#217010) #

I'm going to go out on the limb and say that the vast majority of the Jays' picks in the first 5 rounds will be failures.  Never mind the later picks.  That's without actually having seen any of the players throw a pitch or hit a ball.  In fact, I'll predict the same thing for the 2011 draft in advance.  Just call me Carnac the Magnificent.

85bluejay - Tuesday, June 15 2010 @ 05:01 PM EDT (#217016) #
Absolutely! JP and his staff deserve credit for the draft of 2007 - but,I think the new regime also deserve some credit for a change in philosophy ( go slow approach ala Tampa Bay & new instructors who perhaps are doing a better job) that has resulted in the 2007 high school class going from suspects to possibilities.
TamRa - Tuesday, June 15 2010 @ 06:08 PM EDT (#217026) #
it's going to be very hard for a draft to top 2007 in my mind, even though it's hard not to like any draft in which you have so many high picks.

I think the "shared credit" concept is an easy one for any unbiased observer to agree to, whether it's JP sharing credit for Rios (to the extent it's due) or for AA getting credit for current prospects.

Nevertheless, if a player does turn out well, it must at least be said "good players were drafted" - regardless of whether he who drafted them gave a less than optimal performance on the development side.
