Overall the farm was not bad on Saturday.  2 losses and 5 wins with an outstanding day by third baseman Mark Sobolewski – 5 for 7, 2 doubles, two home runs and 7 RBIs.  The long ball blessed the 51s with Arencibia and Wallace each belting one, and producing 6 RBIs.

Las Vegas 9  Portland 1

The broiler was on 107 (f)  in Las Vegas for the 4,734 fans who saw the 51s best Portland with 14 total hits and a win by Sean Henn (3-2) who spaced out 4 hits in 6.2 innings, threw 4 Ks and allowed just one run.  Jesse Carlson and Jeremy Accardo came on to pitch a combined 2.1 innings of scoreless ball.  The 51s managed a double play on a fly ball to Danny Perales.  Jarrett Hoffpauir committed error 15 (throwing) and error 16 (fielding) to lead the team in slip ups on defence.

Complementing the strong mound outing by Henn, the 51s lumber was on fire with a dozen plus two hits including HRs by JP Arencibia (1 for 5, HR, 3 RBIs), Brett Wallace (2 for 5, HR, 3 RBIs) and Adam Calderone (2 for 4, 2B, HR, RBI).  Manny Mayorson (3 for 4) continued his hot hitting ways (BA .371), Brad Emaus (2 for4) added a pair of singles and Perales (2 for 5) added a pair as well.  Mayorson added a pair of stolen bases for good measure.

New Hampshire 1   New Britain 3

On a muggy overcast afternoon,  the 4961 NH fans saw losing pitcher Randy Boone (2-6) give up 7 hits and just 2 earned runs, but the Fisher Cats didn’t help at the plate, spacing out 7 hits and managing only 1 run on the day.  8 NH runners LOB added to the frustration.

Pride of Vancouver, BC, Adam Lowen (2 for 4) was the only Fisher Cat with a multiple hit game.  Adeiny Hechavarria (1 for 3, 2B) had the only NH extra base hit for the day.  Eric Thames (1 for 3, BB), Darin Mastroianni (1 for 4), Travis Snider (1 for 4), and Matt Luizza (1 for 3) each added singles for NH.

Dunedin 10   Bradenton 5   (first game)

1,219 fans got 2 games for the price of one in Bradenton Saturday.  The got two losses for the home team as well.  In the first game of a Doubleheader, Chuck Huggins(6-3) had the win while allowing 4 hits, 3 runs and a HR in 5 IP.  Chad Beck came on for two innings in relief.

Third Baseman Mark Sobolewski (3 for 4, 2B, 2HRs, 6RBIs) certainly achieved star status for the day with his stellar six RBI performance.  Mike McDade (2 for 3, 2B, HR, RBI) had the other multi-hit game for the D-Jays.  Justin McClanahan (1 for 1, 2B) added a double and Chris Hopkins (1 for 5), Brian Van Kirk (1 for 1) managed singles and Brad McElroy (1 for 3, HR, RBI) added a solo home run.

Dunedin 4   Bradenton 3   (second game)

Bradenton was bested in the nightcap when Ross Buckwalter got the win, pitching just 2 innings but allowing no runs, no hits and striking out 4.  Travis d’Arnaud had a throwing error.

Dunedin made their 8 hits count.  Brian Van Kirk (2 for 3, RBI) and Mark Sobolewski (2 for 3, 2B, RBI) each had a multi-hit game.  Welinton Ramirez (1 for 3, RBI) and Brad McElroy (1 for 3, RBI)  added singles in addition to their RBIs.

Lansing 12   Clinton 7

The largest crowd to watch a Blue Jays farm club game (9,014) on Saturday were treated to 12 runs on 16 hits and a win by pitcher Ryan Shopshire (7-8).  Lansing’s bats more than made up for the 9 hits and 7 runs allowed by Lugnuts hurlers.  Justin Jackson committed his 6th  error (fielding) with Lansing and Kevin Ahrens had his 5th miscue, a fielding error as well.  Lansing’s infield turned 2 double plays.

No less than 6 Luggies had multi-hit games.  Kevin Nolan (3 for 5, 2 2B, 3 RBIs) and Kevin Ahrens (3 for 5, RBI) chipped in three each.  Sean Ochinko (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), Justin Jackson (2 for 3, 2B, RBI), Brad Glenn (2 for 5, RBI), and A.J. Jimenez (2 for 4, RBI) added 2 hits each.  Ryan Schimpf (1 for 3, 3B, RBI) smacked a triple and Eric Eiland (1 for 4, RBI) hit a single.

Auburn 0    State College 7

In the farm’s only shut-out, the Doubledays went down hard in front of 4315 State College fans, giving up 7 run on 7 hits.  Losing pitcher Jessie Hernandez (1-3) gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 BB in just 2.2 innings.  Lance Durham committed a fielding  error, his 6th.

While their was precious little good on the pitching side, the was even less to talk about in the 6 spaced out hits -including two extra base hits, doubles by Lance Durham (1 for 3, 2B) and Oliver Dominguez (1 for 4, 2B) for Auburn.  Jonathan Jones (1 for 4), Carlos Perez (1 for 4), John Roberts (1 for 4), and Andy Fermin (1 for 3) all added singles.

GCL Jays 9   GCL Pirates 7

The babiest of Jays took one from the Pirates with an outstanding 6 inning, 7 K, 2 hit  performance by Shawn Hill (3-0).  Recently changing to a pitcher from a veteran outfielder in the farm club, Sean Shoffit struck out 2 and allowed no hits or runs in an inning pitched.  Chris Enourato added an inning of no run ball as well.

Michael Crouse (2 for 5, HR, 4 RBIs) and Art Charles (1 for 5, HR, 1 RBI) put the lumber to long balls.  Hawkins (3 for 5, RBI) and Marisnick (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) had multi-hit games. Jonathan Valdez (1 for 5) and Matt Abraham (1 for 5) hit singles.

3 Stars:

3rd  Star                 JP Arencibia – 1 for 5, HR, 3RBIs – 29th HR  (leads the Pacific Coast League

2nd Star                 Brett Wallace – 2 for 5, HR, 3 RBIs

1st Star                  Mark Sobolewski – 5 for 7, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBIs – 2 games

Thanks, Mamboon for the update.  I always appreciate reading the MLU'sm even though I haven't commented in years.

On a side note, as an English teacher, I'm aware that sometimes people make spelling and grammar mistakes on posts, but really don't care.  I wish that readers would be quicker to express thanks to the volunteer writers and far less eager to point out shortcomings.

Another great recap. I can't believe the asinine attack.

Looks like the markets for Downs and Gregg are heating up. If AA turns Gregg into a nice prospsect, the contract a few experts questioned will truly be a success. Now if only Johnny Mac could be swapped AA would be batting a thousand.

Congratulations to Brad Mills, who will reportedly start for the Jays on Wednesday.   According to SportsNet commentators, Mills is being scratched from his scheduled start for Vegas tonight and will be called up thereafter.  I'm happy for the guy -- he's finally getting his long-deserved chance.  As of yesterday, Brian Tallet was being talked about for the Wednesday start, so I'm glad the Jays thought better of that boring plan.  In a related move, Travis Snider -- who was going to be called up by Tuesday or Wednesday -- will instead be pushed back to Friday or later.

Have to agree with Tim. I've been reading these posts for years, but rarely post, and appreciate the effort people make on this site. To nitpik about spelling mistakes, and then rant because you've taken offence to someone calling you on it, pushes the commentary to what you would normally see on Leaf blogs. Solid debate on baseball is gold. "Stick to baseball" is good advice Kelekin...

Kelekin. I think starting your post with the following statement: "Only 6 spelling errors and 9 player names spelled incorrectly this time.  Congrats." is probably not the nicest way to go about letting the writer know about such errors, and certainly doesn't speak well to your very own "stick to baseball" retort.

I get it. Seriously. Let's move on.

Here's a fun link to help with that.

Scott Downs trade talks heating up.

Speaking of Sobo -

He now has a .922 OPS for July (though most of that success occured in the last nine games)

On the one hand I'm tempted to cite the recent success and say "so what if it took him 20-25 games to adjust to the higher, harder league" and on the other hand I'm tempted to say "shake your head dude, it's only nine games"

both are very valid points - but I'm hoping that the former prevails in this case.

Speaking of hot streaks -

Brett Wallace is hitting .341 in his last 10 and has 4 homers in that span;

Eric Thames has a 1.110 OPS in July, including 19 walks against 14 K's (he came into the month with 21 walks on the season);

Darin Mastorianni has been hot since the first of June (at least):
.347 / ..448 / .465 / .913

Zach Stewart has a 2.55 ERA since June 1;

Kevin Aherns, of all people, has a .900 OPS in the last 10 games;

Sean Ochinko since June 1: .328 / .365 / .555 / .920 (He and Egan Smith out to get a trial at Dunedin, if possible, before the year is out IMO)

Perhaps this is dreaming, but if I was a GM of a contending team it would be more palatable to trade a top prospect if I filled numerous weakspots on the roster. Hence, packaging Gregg, Downs and Buck together could potentially return a top-flight prospect. Then again, maybe "my quantity for your quality" is just wishful thinking, but I'd rather go for one high-end prospect as opposed to a bunch of decent ones. Either way, I trust AA so much at this point that I'm just giddy about what might happen. This trade deadline, when we are pretty clearly going to be sellers, is riveting.

on the major league level, EE is quietlyu re-establishing his offensive credibility.

since he came back to Toronto, his slash lines (coming into today) are:

.323 / .333 / .484 / .817

Since April 10 it's: .253 / .316 / .500 / .816

He has 54 games played, counting the one ongoing, which is 1/3 of a season. his counting stats x3 are:
(through 3 at bats today)
555 AB
135 H
36 2B
0 3B
30 HR
84 RBI
57 BB
102 K

Be nice if we could convince the suddenly injury plagued Tigers he's just what they need, assuming we're tiring of his defense.

regarding Downs, given what he told John Lott, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of dealing him and then seeing about re-signing him in the offseason IF it doesn't cost us a first round pick to do so. there's a lot to be said for being passionate about staying here, and being the veteran anchor of a bullpen in flux.

also, as much as it wouldn't be in his financial interest...one wonders if he'd accept arbitration (and thereby put us in a position to sign an extension) if we kept him and offered it for the picks.

it's counter-intuitive for sure, but not impossible.

thanks to the batterbox staff for continuously giving us these minor league updates.

pretty good night for the farm. I hope AA trades buck, we need to see what Arencibia can do at the big league level, he has nothing to prove down in Triple A

on a side not, it's kind of sad that the attendance at Lansing is almost as much as the attendance at the rogers centre

I see that Merkin Valdez is now listed as the starting pitcher for Vegas tonight.  So it means that Brad Mills has been scratched, which seems to confirm that Mills is being recalled to the majors for the Wednesday start.  I hope he gets a reasonable shot in the majors, even if he has to be shuttled into the bullpen occasionally to keep him on the roster.  Mills has performed admirably in the PCL's poor pitching environment.   The Jays need to see what they have in Mills this season, or at least bolster his trade value.

Mamboon   ...  just ignore the comments from the bleachers  ... you're doing a great job .  I really appreciate your extra efforts of incorporating the great photos into your posts (no sp. mistakes in those thousands of  words).  Also it's great having  firsthand reporting of the Dunedin teams.  Sometimes the quality of posting makes it easy to forget that the Box is made up of non-professional posters of all ages and locations ( although sometimes not )... I personally make enough grammatical and compositional errors for everybody...  But what we have in common is our passion for the Blue Jays ( with the exception of course of the pre-eminent Yankee lovin' Texas centric Mick ) ...  This post is making me reconsider changing my moniker from jgadfly to 'from the cheapseats fwiw ' ... keep up the good work !

On a different note, what is going on with your 'main man' Michael McDade ?   He seems to be in a bit of a funk  (sidenote for ol' Maple Leaf fans... is Frankie still in the 'land of the living' ?)  or is the Florida humidity catching up to him ?

PS ...one thing I like about posting on the internet ... you don't have to worry about crossing your 't's or dotting your 'i's

Man, the international market has really stagnated over the past week or so. Ben Badler over at BA suspects that most of the IFA's have extremely high asking prices which teams will not meet. I wonder at what point do they come down? Or at what point do teams go up? Do you think teams will re-evaluate the international market after the August 15 signing deadline? I think Badler also mentioned that next year's crop of IFAs is considered much deeper than this years so maybe teams just aren't interested in this years prospects? I'm optimistic that the Jays have offers in to some of the remaining high end talent and are just crossing their fingers that the handlers will come down. What do people think?

I really hope Jason Frasor gets traded. I'm tired of watching his deep breathe, hap tipped up, sweat on the brow thing every time he comes in. It's like he tries to create a situation just so he can take twenty minutes in between pitches. I love watching Scott Downs and Kevin Gregg work. They come and mean business, there's no pussy-footing around. Now I'm sure walk totals will indicate that Kevin Gregg walks more people than Jason Frasor, it's just I'm so frsutrated with Frasor's demeanor out there. He doesn't instill confidence at all in my opinion. Sorry for the rant.

eh...sometimes I'm thinking it's one way, sometimes the other - for some reason the correct version doesn't stick in my head. I have the same problem with Jesse Litsch (<not sure if that is in fact correct even) and too lazy to look it up every time.

And yes, when I was writing that I had that OPS in my head from memory, wasn't still looking at the page.

I know how stupid it looks but for some reason it's just a blind spot (on top of my normally crappy spelling I mean)

Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2010 @ 09:11 PM EDT (#219139) #
You need a memory aid.  Are you old enough to remember Tom Lehrer?  Ahrens and Lehrer, the "hr" guys or something like that.

the weird thing is that almost every time, my first instinct IS to go "re" and then for some reason i talk myself out of it and go "er"

Best i can figure, it's because "re" seems the normal spelling to me and I've got it stuck in my head that he has an abnormal spelling so I'm trying to reverse it to fix it.

(yes I know it's goofy to think there's a "normal" spelling for "Ahrens")

Just out of curiosity, it seems the Padres AAA team Portland Beavers has been picking up quite a few players released by Vegas for last and this season: Russ Adams last season, Kyle Phillips and Nick Green this season. When Dopirak was the starting first baseman for Vegas after the all star break last season, the released Brett Harper signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and play with the AAA team Isotopes. The original first baseman of the Isotopes, Valentino Pascucci went to the Beavers.

Are the 51s complimentary to the need of Beavers' player transactions? Or just coincidences.
