Dave Niehaus, the  one-and-only voice of the Seattle Mariners -- the team's primary broadcaster since their inception in 1977, has passed away.

There were plenty of legitimate complaints to Niehaus' style -- extreme homerism, Americanization of Latino names, stuff like that. But these were minor points compared to the voice-becoming-part-of-the-family joy Niehaus brought to the entire Pacific Northwest United States.

Rest well, David.

I would sometimes check the Mariners broadcasts hoping to hear a call by Niehaus.  I remember a play when Ichiro threw out Reed Johnson trying to go from 1st to 3rd on a single to right.  Niehaus seemed so happy his voice broke and he seemed to be crying.  For a right-fielder's throw to third-base in a regular season game.

I was in the park for that play and I think it almost deserved tears. I've only been to 10 games or so but that was easily the most impressive thing I've seen in a ballpark.

I'll miss Niehaus - he's been a constant for me for over 20 years. I'm a Jays fan but, living on the west coast, had the pleasure of listening to plenty of Niehaus calls over the years.

I first heard Dave Niehaus call a couple of innings on the Jays radio broadcast back in the 90's.  I'm glad I got to hear more of his work thanks to the internet and Sportsnet Pacific broadcasts.  The my-oh-my or grand salami calls were classic!  He will be missed.  I hope he and Tom Cheek will get together to call games in the big ballpark in the sky.
