A snow out shorted Las Vegas’ game to 7 innings and New Hampshire was rained out. Lansing made us proud and Dunedin did not.

Las Vegas 1  Colorado Springs 2

Somebody forgot to tell the weatherman that they wanted to play baseball in Colorado Springs yesterday.  Starting out cloudy in the 40’s, the weather beat up the 3,634 fans until a 3” snow storm with temps in the low 30’s chased everybody home in the 7th inning.  Colorado was the victor, game was in and despite 10 hits from the 51s, the score was against them 2 to 1.  Scott Richmond (L, 1-1) took the loss with 4.0 IP allowing both Colorado runs on 6 hits with 2 Ks.   Willie Collazo came on in relief, one-hitting and shutting out Colorado,  while striking out a pair in 2.2 IP.

The 51s got the hits, but they couldn’t put any more than one run on the board, leaving 9 on base, 7 of whom were in scoring position.  Adam Loewen (3 for 3, 2B, RBI) was the productive 51, doubling in David Cooper (2 for 3, R, 2B) who doubled himself to lead off the 2nd.   Bret Lawrie (2 for 4) was the other multi-hitter on the day, and Jonathan Diaz (1 for 4, 2b) added the only other extra base hit.

New Hamshire VS Binghamton (Postponed – Rain)

Dunedin 2  Daytona 6

Daytona hitters slapped D-Jays pitchers well with 12 hits and Dunedin infielders Ivan Contreras (0 for 4, K) and Keven Ahrens (0 for 3, BB, K) each committed an error.  Deck McGuire (L, 1-1) took the loss with 4.0 IP, allowing 5 hits, including a 2 run homer.  He gave up 5 runs, 4 earn and struck out two.  Matt Wright and Dumas Garcia came on in relief and 4 hit Daytona, allowing one more run.  Wright had 4 Ks.

Scott Podsednik (2 for 3, R, 2b, BB, K) and Dewayne Wise (1 for 5, 2K) continued their rehab assignments in Dunedin’s outfield.  A.J. Jimenez (2 for 4, RBI) and Brad Glenn (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) supplied the 2 RBIs on the evening.

Lansing 6 West Michigan 1

Lansing’s infield committed 3 errors, 2 from Bryson Namba and 1 from K.C. Hobson, but Lansing pitching made the difference with  Daniel Webb (W, 1-1).   He worked 7 innings and 4 hit the White Caps, allowing a single run and striking out 4.  Sean Nolin got his first save with 2 innings of 1 hit, 1 K work.

Oliver Dominguez (1 for 3, 3B, 2 RBI) tripled in a pair in the first inning.  Lansing’s other runs were produced by Jonathan Jones (1 for 5, 2B, RBI) who doubled in Namba in the 2nd and Jake Marisnick (1 for 2, R, 3B, RBI) tripling in Carlos Perez (3 for 5, R) who led Dunedin’s multi-hit parade for the evening.

Three Stars:

3rd Star                  Tie: Oliver Dominguez (1 for 3, 3B, 2RBI), Jake Marisnick (1 for 2, 3B, RBI)

2nd Star                 Adam Loewen (3 for 3, 2B, RBI)

1st Star                  Daniel Web (7 IP, 4H, 1R, 4Ks)

AA was just in the booth at the Jays game. Says Syndergaard is sitting at 96, Sanchez up to 95/96, Macguire looking good.

On draft, says the Jays will definitely take best player. Says the Jays took Romero in part because they had Hill and Adams at the time. AA says he hasn't seen as many players as last year.

Impressed with Thames, Cooper, and Lawrie. Mentioned walk rates for all three, would like those to come up. Emphasized that as the league adjusts to Lawrie, important that Lawrie starts to walk more and not chase. Sounds like the Jays staff are waiting to see if his approach improves as pitchers start to be more selective in pitching to him.

Interesting article on old friend Tim Collins in the NYT, including the story of how he was discovered by Ricciardi which I hadn't heard before:

Really, what else is AA going to say? - That Mcguire is looking like the pedestrian draft pick that he is - while I liked the 2010 draft especially because the Jays were willing to draft many prep arms that were the strength of the draft even though they are riskier picks but I was very disappointed with the Mcguire pick,a innings eating 4/5 rotation type when there were much better talent available and AA had said that his team would go for the higher ceiling guys and in 2009 we also picked a 4/5 low ceiling guy in Jenkins with our top pick  - I really hope that the Jays are more aggressive with their top picks this draft and that they don't avoid Boras clients because of the 2009 problems, however I not holding my breath,I'm expecting another Mcguire like prospect with the top pick.

Well the reports on Sanchez and Syndergaard were certainly informative.  I wouldn`t think that he was being disingenuous.

A little tough on Deck McGuire. He might end up being a 4 or 5 starter who knows. It seems to me the only ones not liking the selection of McGuire from Toronto. Most industry experts rate McGuire higher on the Jays prospect list. Some Jays fans seem to take it as insult to be projected that high. As for rating the Jays 2010 draft class. You maybe the first that didn`t like it.The Jays farm system didn`t improve to 4th or 5th place by drafting poorly.

Anyone else remember when Rickey Romero was the worst draft pick of all time and had the upside of a 4/5 starter?

SJE,

Forgive me, but what part of "I liked the 2010 draft" tells you that I didn't like the 2010 draft - In fact, if you check, I was and am one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the 2010 draft and have said i think it may be the most successful draft in Jays history - that said, I didn't like the McGuire, too pedestrian for me esp. in a division when you need top shelf talent and the Jays are using the draft to acquire most of that type of talent. - I am very excited to see the 2010 draft class get on the field when the short season starts.

Yeah & Tulo will always have been a better pick

For those who didn't catch the broadcast, AA was asked about the Romero/Tulo pick. Without being disrespectful to his former bosses and to Romero, he seemed to say, without saying, that there was a divide amongst the Jays personnel on who to take and Romero was chosen simply because they had Hill and Adams. AA seemed to be saying that had he been in charge the pick would've been Tulo because he was the best player available. It also seemed like he wouldn't be as involved in this years draft as last years.

I may be reading way too much into his comments, but that was my impression of his comments. AA chooses his words carefully so it's hard to really decipher what he's getting at sometimes.

He also mentioned that a reason Chris Woodward was brought in this year to Las Vegas was for character. He said that AAA can sometimes be a toxic atmosphere with guys itching to get back to the big leagues and failed big league players. He mentioned that there was a bit of that last year at Las Vegas and Woodward was brought in in part because he was positive guy and someone who could help bring along Lawrie.

Something that impresses me of AA is his knowledge of his players. He seems to be up to date on what's happening with all the players in the system. I imagine one thing that probably changed with his regime was better and more thorough reporting by managers and instructors at the various levels.

Sam, Keith Law was interviewed a few years ago and said that the majority of people in the room wanted Tulowitski and Ricciardi over-ruled them. I think the Hill/Adams explanation has evolved more from Ricciardi supporters, though by June 2005 it should have been apparent that Russ Adams at least was no reason not to draft Troy Tulowitski.

Whatever, it's done and Ricky Ro is our guy and a guy to support. Anthopolous has said he thinks Ricky can be a strong #2 starter, and while I'd move that down a number, he can be good.

Um, Romero's already pretty darn good. Definitely already at #2 level for me.

On a more positive note, David Cooper is at 11 doubles.  More impressive to me is his even BB:K rate.  I know some of us expected Cooper to have a much improved season with his overly low BABIP totals last year and his really good 2nd half, but I definitely didn't expect him to do so well in the early going.

I also didn't expect Nestor Molina to be the best starter in the Dunedin rotation.

Again, for those who missed it, the Tulo/RR response was for the question of whether AA believes in drafting for need or best player available. He used this as an example of losing out on a superior talent (Tulo) when a club feels the need is not there for the position they play. AA further said we will draft the BPA.

One thing of interest to note in the Lansing game from Saturday.  There was 10 double plays turned in that contest.

D Webb has done extremely well in his last 2 starts.
I knew that he was a hard thrower, I looked at his 2010 stats which I guess were not that bad but somehow I stereotyped him as a raw hard thrower. I then decided that he would spend the whole year at Lansing, trying to harness his talent (95mph Fb).
Someone please tell me about this guy, since I don't have a clue. But I like him.
There was stuff written about him, he is considered a B Jay 2009 steal because another team could not sign him in 2008 when they had the chance.
I tried to analyse his last game and somehow learned something about pitching results. I know the following 24 batters faced, 11-3 Gb/Fb +2SO = 16 outs. As many as 6 DP outs makes 22 outs which would leave 2 LOB. If my facts are correct, can I conclude for the purposes of ranking results that 2 LOB over 7IP is way up there. I mean using that LOB number as a tool to judging a pitcher.

I saw Webb pitch at Auburn in 2010 and here is what I reported at that time:

Daniel Webb is a 21 year old who has a very good fastball, 93-95 mph, complemented with a slider and a change.  Webb is one of those pitchers who will have an inning where he commands his pitches and looks like a top prospect.  The next inning his fastball is in the middle of the plate and he gives up hits and runs.  Webb could be a decent prospect if he can consistently command his pitches.  Also with that fastball, if he can command it and one other pitch, he would be an interesting reliever.

Doom Service also saw Webb around that time and he had a similar opinion....

Webb was the best pitching prospect I saw, better than Sean Nolin on just one viewing. I caught Nolin on a bad night, Sunday ... he breezed through two innings then lost it in the third.. a couple of hard hit balls, then a couple of bloops, then he hit two batters and walked two more. Webb threw harder than Nolin, but Webb's fastball ran a little too straight and he doesn't miss enough bats. His breaking pitches were inconsistent, but the good ones were good enough to dream on.

The link to both reports is here.

Thanks Gerry. I enjoyed re-reading the whole article.
Webb as you mentioned needs more than his FB. I expect he will be advised to use the other stuff a lot for development even if his results suffer in the short term.
