The affiliates enjoyed a 3-1 night on the farm that featured steely resolve and a walk-off win so no one lost wages here.

Las Vegas 7 Reno 6

Las Vegas, NV – The 51s won this battle of Nevada as they scored once in the eighth and ninth for a come from behind win. They were down 5-1 after three innings but a three-run fourth jumped started the comeback.

Batting – Adam Loewen had the big swing as he launched a three-run homer to get the 51s back in the ball game. That was among his two hits on the night. Scott Podsednik also had a two-hit night with a pair of triples. Travis Snider did not have a hit but he did draw three walks and scored a pair of runs. Jonathan Diaz also showed a sharp batting eye with three walks and a run batted in. Chris Woodward doubled, walked and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly while Brett Lawrie singled, walked and picked up an RBI. Eric Thames had a single and a walk. Brian Jeroloman drew a walk so put the BJBBM to 9! Dewayne Wise did not have a hit but did have a sac fly. In total, Las Vegas batters drew 10 walks and only struck out once (Loewen). I suppose that's acceptable!

Running – Lawrie and Diaz each stole a base.

Pitching – Scott Richmond was hit around in this one as he gave up two homers and six runs over five innings. He gave up eight hits, walked five and struck out just one batter. Of his 10 outs in play, six were on the ground. Lefty Sean Henn threw two shutout frames and struck out a pair while only walking one. Lefty Wil Ledezma gave up a couple of hits but also had a couple of strikeouts in his shutout inning while Danny Farquhar earned the victory with a clean ninth that included one K.

Defence – Jeroloman threw one away and Ledezma mishandled one. Reno stole a couple of bases against the Jeroloman-Richmond battery. Wise threw out a runner at the plate from right field and one double play was turned.

New Hampshire 7 Reading 2

Reading, PA – The R-Phils took the lead with a run in the first and also scored in the sixth but the Fisher Cats pulled ahead for good with a trio of runs in the second and put the game away with three more in the ninth. Their other run came in the third.

Batting – Yan Gomes belted a three-run homer to put the Fisher Cats on the board and added a double. Darin Mastroianni also had a two-hit night with a double and a single while Mike McDade singled, walked and drove in a run. Callix Crabbe also reached twice with a single and a hit by pitch and was the only Fisher Cat to avoid a strikeout. John Tolisano had a double and an RBI while Mark Sobolewski and Moises Sierra also added hits of the two-base variety. Anthony Gose had a single, which was one more than Adeiny Hechavarria but he did contribute a sac fly.

Running – Mastroianni stole his first Double-A base of the season.

Pitching – Chad Beck was a winner, baby! He killed the Phils by holding them down to two runs on four hits (including a homer) over six innings. He was 5-0 in the K-BB columns and 5-5 in groundout/flyout matters. Yohan Pino, Ronald Uviedo and lefty Evan Crawford provided two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. Pino gave up a walk, Uviedo was perfect and Crawford issued a walk. Matt Daly gave up a hit and plunked a batter but struck out a man to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Defence – Gomes allowed a passed ball but I can let it pass (get it? Holy crap, that's doggone funny!) after his three-run homer.

Dunedin 4 Brevard County 3

Dunedin, FL – Four runs in the first for the D-Jays was barely enough against the Brewers affiliate, who responded with a run in the sixth and two more in the ninth.

Batting – Ryan Goins had it going (real creative there, huh?) with two doubles, a sac bunt and an RBI. Sean Ochinko had a sac fly and two walks. Kevin Ahrens singled and drove in a run while Chris Hopkins and A.J. Jimenez also found the hit column. Brad McElroy was plunked but Jon Talley, Justin Jackson and Kenny Wilson all went oh-fer.

Running – McElroy stole a base for the third time this season.

Pitching – Nestor “Funky Cold/Jose” Molina earned the win as he was nicked for just an unearned run on four hits through seven innings. He posted a K-BB total of 7-0 and a groundout/flyout ratio of 8-3. He faced just one batter over the minimum through the first five frames. Recently acquired Chris “Mayday” Malone, who came over from Denver in the blockbuster Brad Emaus deal, pitched a shutout inning by working around a pair of hits and striking out a batter. Wes Etheridge almost made Dunedin fans jump out a window. He gave up two runs on four hits, including a homer, but got the final three outs of the ball game to collect the save.

Defence – Jackson mishandled one at second but was involved in turning two double plays.

Lake County 2 Lansing 1

Lansing, MI – One run and one hit in inning one was not enough as the Indians affiliate score twice in the fifth to get the victory.

Batting – K.C. Hobson had the lone hit, lone RBI and was the lone Lugnut to get aboard twice as he also drew a walk. Jonathan Jones drew a walk and scored and Joe Bowen drew a walk but did not score. Balbino Fuenmayor took one for the team. Oliver Dominguez, Jake Marisnick, Marcus Knecht, Michael Crouse and Gustavo Pierre – thanks for coming out! Lugnut hitters struck out 11 times. Only Hobson avoided a K after his name but of course, his first initial is K. Make of that what you will.

Running – Back to the dugout mostly. Probably a light jog, actually.

Pitching – Lefty Egan Smith scattered seven hits and two walks over six innings, giving up an unearned run among his two total. He struck out five and nine of his 12 outs in play stayed on the ground. He also threw a wild pitch. Fellow lefty Sean “not to be confused with former Maple Leaf bust Owen” Nolin threw three shutout innings in relief as he allowed just a pair of hits and struck out a batter.

Defence – The battery of Bowen and Smith each had a fielding error on back to back plays that led to the tying run. Smith did pick off runners at first and second and Fuenmayor was involved in 5-2 and 1-5 double plays at third base.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Adam Loewen, Las Vegas

2. Chad Beck, New Hampshire

1. Nestor Molina, Dunedin

I saw Molina in Auburn last year, and he impressed with a lively fastball.  He was pitching in relief, and I figured that he wasn't much of a prospect.  I did not realize that he had been converted from the infield, like Marcum and Santos.

Anyways, he has had a great beginning in the FSL at age 22, striking out almost a batter an inning while walking a batter a game.  Last night's outing of 7 innings was his longest.  We'll see if his arm can withstand a starter's workload, but for now, he has moved way, way up my list.

Denoit - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#234130) #
Marcum was drafted as a pitcher. Lots of players play another position in college and high school doesn't mean they are "converted".

Marcum wasn't an SP though, he was his college's starting SS/closer and he continued relieving in Auburn post-draft so it's a little bit different.

I have not seen this noted yet, but Travis D'Arnaud is injured yet again. This time with concussion like symptoms. He is on the 7-day DL.

At what point do we become concerned about Travis' penchant for getting injured. I know this is not something one can always control, though perhaps catching is not in his future -- assuming his bat would hold up somewhere else -- as a way to reduce injury potential.

I was not thinking about draft status, but rather change in position by age.  Marcum was moved from the infield to the bullpen and then to the rotation roughly within the same time frame as Molina.  The bottom line is that when Marcum was converted to the rotation at age 22 in low A ball, he had very little mileage on his arm (and relatively little experience pitching), having thrown 53, 32 and 78 innings the previous years.

Props to Mike and #2JBrumfield for all the info on Nestor Molina.  It's a fascinating story.  He's only a few months older than Deck McGuire, and two years younger than Chad Jenkins, and he got none of the fanfare of those two first-round picks, and has none of their pitching experience, yet he is outpitching both of them.  Very intriguing story going forward.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 12:44 PM EDT (#234142) #

Last report I received on Molina had him with an 88-93 mph fastball, breaking ball and changeup.

China fan - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 12:49 PM EDT (#234144) #
Correction to my last post:  Molina is basically just 1 year younger than Jenkins.  But is still outpitching him this year.

Interesting to check some Vegas stats...
Travis Snider: 538/684/615 - power outage! :)
David Cooper: 395/438/617 - 81 AB's, but a nice 81
Brett Lawrie: 357/400/580 - 112 AB's but 6 errors
Eric Thames: 333/415/539 - 102 AB's
Darin Mastroianni: 264/297/345 - 87 AB's
Adam Loewen: 238/283/393 - 84 AB's

I'd say Loewen & Mastroianni better watch out or they'll lose some playing time soon. Wondering where the power is though for Snider & Cooper as with those averages I'd expect more power. Can't imagine Lawrie will be down much longer unless the Jays are trying to protect the pitchers in the majors from cringing on every ball to 3B.

The rotation though has ERA's of (3+ starts) 2.18, 7.04, 7.13, and 6.89. One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong. FYI: It is Brad Mills at 2.18. Randy Boone has had 2 starts, 9 IP with 1 ER (1 BB 7 SO) - is he dl'ed (haven't been paying attention).

I was as concerned as anyone about the back issue - but you cannot connect an event based injury (being hit in the head) with something physiological like that.

That would be as false as the foolish writers who used to ask of Roy Halladay was "injury prone" based on having his leg broken by a line drive and the next year having an appendectomy.

Since 2008, Molina has 155 K's compared to only 33 BB's, an outstanding ratio of 4.7 to 1.  This year, he is close to 9 to 1, which is an astonishing number, albeit in a small sample size.  The ratio of strikeouts to walks is one of the best predictors of a young pitcher's potential.   I'm moving him up on my prospect list.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#234152) #

The two major injuries he has had as a Blue Jay are unrelated and so it's not a concern for me.

When I was in Lansing I heard that if this was a year ago d'Arnaud would still be playing but because of the increased focus on concussions he has been held out.  I would expect him to be back shortly.

Speaking of being back shortly Henderson Alvarez pitched in extended spring last week.  He will need a few more starts to work up his stamina but I would expect to see him back in about ten days.

I'd say Loewen & Mastroianni better watch out or they'll lose some playing time soon.

Mastroianni was sent back down to AA a few days ago and played in NH last night.  Certainly a disappointing result, and probably reduces the chance of seeing him with the Jays this year given the backload of veteran 4th outfielders added of late (Patterson, Wise, Podsednik).

Darin may be viewed by the Jays in a similar light as Brad Emaus, possibly having major league tools, but lacking enough to be a regular/star, and thus expendable.
uglyone - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 02:29 PM EDT (#234157) #
I'm a little worried that Snider's not going to see any pitches to hit down in the 5th/6th slots.

Not sure why they have him down there, but IMO they should definitely move him up to the 3-hole (instead of Wise who's currently there) to at least force pitchers to throw him stome strikes.
AWeb - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#234159) #

Can't imagine Lawrie will be down much longer unless the Jays are trying to protect the pitchers in the majors from cringing on every ball to 3B.

As opposed to? Encarnacion, after showing signs of hope last year, appears to have imploded this year (.714 fielding percentage. .714!). 21 chances and 6 errors from EE, 3 more from Nix; yeah, 3B defense has been horrendous so far. I think the current state of the hot corner makes it easier to bring Lawrie up - could he possibly be worse?

Speaking of injuries of a sort, Dickie Thon Jr. is out of action indefinitely due to a blood disorder.
Anders - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#234170) #
The team clearly doesn't feel the need to rush Lawrie, and, realistically, there isn't much need to. This isn't a Posey situation, the team isn't going to contend, and Lawrie will benefit from being able to play third in a less pressure packed environment, and keep working on his hitting (he's 20 and has had some 775 PA above A ball).

That being said, it sure would be nice to see him. Edwin's not really doing much of anything, and would go to the bench (or DH) in this scenario I suppose.

I am looking forward to our late summer lineup of CF Davis, SS Escobar, RF Bautista, 1B Lind, 2B Hill, LF Snider, C Arencibia, 3B Lawrie, DH Encarnacion. Rivera hit's cleanup for the 51s... It would mesh well with out Morrow/Romero/Cecil/Drabek/Zep rotation.

I enjoyed that! It was one of the greatest opportunities ever to Bring the Snark! I actually got to ask if people were worried that Halladay might have another appendectomy...

Two questions:
1) Based on Darin's stats on baseball reference, he played second base. Does he have a future in outfield and middle infield utility if being regular would become out of the equation ?
2) Seeing the success of Jose Bautista and the frequent player transactions of the Pirates, is it beneficial to the Jays to claim a player or two from their transactions ? I didn't mean Patterson, Wise and Podsednik are all expendable but a younger outfielder is presumably better bet in getting result on the "buy low sell high" principle. The Pirates got Brandon Wood recently; the Jays could also do so.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 08:56 PM EDT (#234178) #
The Luggies are running up the score tonight, with Michael Crouse and Gustavo Pierre doing the heavy lifting. Crouse has doubled, homered, walked, been hit by a pitch and stolen 2 bases (he's now 14-1 in this department). He's only hitting .250, but he's got the strikeouts under control so far and he is hitting for punch.

I'm relying on memory, but I believe Darin was very poor defensively at 2B which led to the switch to CF in 2008.  He hasn't played in the infield at all since Low-A Auburn in 2007, so he wouldn't be able to be used as a super-utility player unless he was given some reps in the infield again in the minors.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 10:21 PM EDT (#234182) #
Mastroianni is a high energy, fast twitch guy.  At second base the Jays felt he was trying to do things too quickly and he made a lot of errors as a result, it was as if he was out of control there.  The outfield was a better fit for him.

Can't imagine Lawrie will be down much longer unless the Jays are trying to protect the pitchers in the majors from cringing on every ball to 3B.

Lawrie committed his 6th error right around the time Mordecai went to Vegas to work with him on his fielding. Tonight  he had his 7th error, 14 games since his 6th. He may be catching on quicker than expected.

McDade 4th in AVG.
McDade 3rd in Hits.
McDade 4th in Doubles.

Mike the past couple of years was basically a one dimensional home run hitter. In '09 he hit .277 with 27 2B's and 16 HR's and in '10 .267 with 22 2B's and 21 HR's in a combined 888 AB's. In the AFL this past winter he seemed to change. He ended up 3rd in the league with a .375 average, 11 2B's but only 1 HR in 88 AB's. That pattern seems to be continuing in NH - .344, 10 2B's, 1 HR in 93 AB's. He's hitting for a much higher average, but traded HR's for 2B's.Has he changed his swing/approach or is it something else? On the downside he's still has a 5/21 BB/K ratio.

Lawrie may yet turn out OK at third. He has youth and athleticism on his side. Plus, he has a clear incentive to become a decent fielder. He must know that 3B is his ticket to a full-time MLB job, whereas he's blocked in the OF (assuming Snider gets back on track).

Well maybe just maybe the numerous errors at 3rd base will turn out to be some kind of learning experience for the Front Office.
EE was not supposed to play there, as a regular in 2006,7&8, I am guessing the hope was that his defense would improve for him to stay there. It did not so position change, his bat is has proven good. Nix is temporary IMO, I don't like him learning 3rd at the Majors for the Jays. Lawrie has to become good defensively at 3rd & LV is the place to do it. He certainly is getting lots of instruction. But if he cannot then Hill, Escobar or find someone else IMO because 96 wins with so many errors from 1 position regularly is too much to overcome.
