The Blue Jays farm system made us proud on Friday night, sweeping every opponent.  From Las Vegas to Lansing (except Dunedin) pitching was great for the good guys.  Batting was run productive for everybody, led by Dunedin, who needed to put 11 on the board to best Bradenton.

Las Vegas 6  Omaha 1

Brad Mills (4-2) inked his fourth win with a brilliant no run, 4 hit, 5 K performance in 8.0 IP.  Clint Everts came on in the 9th to throw just 13 pitches.  Ten of those were strikes, but he gave up a solo homer that spoiled a shut out for the 51s.  Las Vegas had a no error night in the field, a turnaround from Thursday’s sloppy suckage in the glove (thowing) department.  In fact, the game ended on a sparkling play by Travis Snider (1 for 5, R, RBI) as he dove to his right to bring in a sharp line drive to left field.

Mike McCoy didn’t play because he was on his way back to Toronto, according to the league transactions posted late Friday and reported to Bauxites real early today by Alex Obal.

At the plate, the 51s delivered a dozen hits, led by Dwayne Wise (3 for 5, 2 R, 3B, Hr, RBI) posting an impressive 8 TB on the evening.  The RBI parade was won by David Cooper (2 for 3, 2B, 3 RBIs) highlighted by an 8th inning two-run double that scored Bret Lawrie (2 for 5, 2R, 2B) and Snider.  The pride of Vancouver, Adam Loewen (2 for 4, 2B), turned another multi-hit effort.  Brian Jeroloman (1 for 3, RBI)and Jason Lane (1 for 3, BB) each put a hit on the board as well.

New Hampshire 6  New Britain 2

5,890 saw visiting New Hampshire hand hometown New Britain their 15th loss, thereby giving sole first place honors to the Fisher Cats who are now 26-14 in the Easter Division of the Eastern League.  Henderson Alvarez (1-0) picked up his first win, throwing 6.0 innings of four-hit, one-run baseball while striking out 6.  Ronald Uviedo and Alan Farina turned in solid performances in relief with a combined 5 Ks in 3.0 IP.

On the plate side of the game, the Fisher Cats turned in a total of 9 hits, led by Adeiny Hechavarria (2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, RBI) and Big Mike McDade (2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 RBIs).  Travis d’Arnaud (1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB), Ricardo Nanita (1 for 4, 2B, RBI), Mark Sobolewski (1 for 4, R, 2B) and John Tolisano (1 for 3, 2B, BB) all added two-baggers in the winning effort.

Dunedin 11  Bradenton 10

Friday’s high scoring contest was played an hour south of Dunedin under clear skies on a humid 89 degree (f) gulf coast evening in Bradenton.  Despite giving up 13 hits and 10 runs, Baby Jays pitchers struck out 12.  The third of five Dunedin pitchers, Matt Wright (3-1) threw just 2.2 innings allowing a run on 2 hits while striking out 5.  In 4.0 IP, starter Nestor Molina was tagged for 7 hits, including a homer and gave up 6 runs while striking out 6.

Dunedin bats were blazing with a total of 19 hits on the night.  Justin Jackson (4 for 5, 2B, HR, RBI) led all sluggers with four hits a double and an RBI.  RBI champs on the evening were Brad Glenn (3 for 6, R, 2B, 3 RBIs) and Jon Talley (3 for 5, 2 2B, BB, 3 RBIs).  Kevin Ahrens (2 for 5, 3 R, 2 2B, BB, 2 RBIs) drove in a pair of runs. Kenny Wilson (2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI) added a run batted in, while Ivan Contreras (1 for 5) and Brad McElroy (1 for 4, R, 2B) and Sean Ochinko (1 for 5, R) each added a hit.

Lansing 5  Bowling Green 2

On a balmy 76 degree (f) Michigan evening,  5,916 Lugnuts’ faithful saw their home boys best Bowling Green and move into 2nd place in the eastern division of the Midwest league by a scant .004 pct.  Winning pitcher Marcus Walden (1-0) picked up his first W with 2.1 IP, a pair of Ks and just a single hit and a BB.  Starter Egan Smith stuck out three, allowed 4 hits and a pair of runs in 4.2 IP.  Danny Barnes logged his third save, pitching 2 innings striking out 1, and giving up just a single hit.

Luggies sluggers were led by Kevin Nolan (3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, RBI).  Struggling Gustav Pierre (1 for 3, HR, RBI) showed some strength and slammed his 2nd round tripper, a solo blast, in the 7th inning.  Other RBIs were turned in by Jake Marisnick (1 for 4, 2B, RBI) and Marcus Knecht (1 for 4, R, 3B, RBI).

Three Stars:

3rd Star      Dwayne Wise (3-5, 2 R, 3B, HR, RBI)

2nd Star    Tie: David Cooper (2-3,2B, 3RBIs), Brad Glenn (3-6,2B,3RBIs),

                  Jon Talley (3-5,22b,3RBIs)

1st Star     Henderson Alvarez (6.0 IP, 4 H, R, 6 Ks)

If Ahrens, Jackson and McGuire are all in double A in the second half, Fisher Cat fans are in for a real treat- a truly dominating ballclub.

Good news every day on the farm.  The only guys I can think of who are having off years are the Mastro and Jello-man.  Stewart has been just ok.

It would be interesting to see comparisons to Kansas City's top prospects in terms of statistics and how they are doing.

It will be interesting to see what the Jays do with Jeroloman going forward.

His development at the AA-AAA seems to have stalled, with his K rate skyrocketing the past few seasons but maintaining his excellent walk rates.  He hasn't showed any ability though to hit for average or power though.

Given he's already on the 40-man, we'll likely see him in Toronto this year if JP or Molina get hurt.

AA doesn't seem to value "C" type prospects very much that have been close to the majors but unlikely to be above-average major leaguers.  Brad Emaus was basically given away for nothing twice, and Tim Collins and Trystan Magnuson were traded to fill current needs.  Potential 4th outfielder Mastroianni never seemed to have a true shot to make the roster or get called up and got buried on the depth chart behind retreads like Patterson, Podsednik and Wise even before his struggles at Las Vegas.

In many ways, Jeroloman already has "old-player" skills with excellent defence and ability to walk even though he's only 26.  I have a suspicion that AA would prefer to have a veteran catcher like Molina to backup Arencibia going forward, even though Jeroloman likely brings similar skills to to the table.

interesting enough that I decided to do it...I used BA's top-10 for the Royals, but I'm taking some liberties with the Jays' top-10. Stuck Thames in there instead of JPA (just because of the better age, position, and MLB/AAA comparisons with Hosmer), I used Marisnick instead of Perez to match up against Eibner, and I used Jenkins and Alvarez in there instead of Woj and Sanchez.

The fact that I'm taking out a rookie of the year candidate on the Jays from the comparison is a bit strange though, I guess.

McDade has, I think, the best hitting line in the Eastern League, with appropriate age adjustments. The hitters who are significantly ahead of him are 2 or 3 years older. I don't know that the Royals are as deep, at this point, as the Jays are.
TamRa - Saturday, May 21 2011 @ 09:11 PM EDT (#235283) #
I'm thinking that unless he ends up thrown into some trade, Jeroloman will be the guys who's parked at AAA as an emergency call-up - essentially, just like the guy he's sharing the job with right now.
Mike Green - Saturday, May 21 2011 @ 09:37 PM EDT (#235284) #
Like the big club, the D-Jays and Luggies have both climbed out of deep holes to lead late. Ryan Goins hit the WPA jackpot in the ninth inning today for Dunedin, while Kevin Nolan carried the big bat in Lansing.

Yeah, Jeroloman is the guy you call up if one of the catchers is on the DL.

They should bring him up in September, if only to make JPA  a DH/PH option.

Nice to see Boston giving one away.

Anybody know what happened with Vegas tonight (Sat night)?  Gameday shows Cecil as replaced without facing a batter.
hypobole - Sunday, May 22 2011 @ 12:29 AM EDT (#235288) #
Long rain delay between the top and bottom of the 1st I believe. By the time the rain stopped, Cecil had cooled down and his night was done. Jeffress was pulled as well after the half inning.
Dunedin is on quite a roll. After an 8-14 April, they've gone 17-4 in May.
TamRa - Sunday, May 22 2011 @ 02:00 AM EDT (#235289) #
on the game notes they originally listed Luis Perez as tonight's starter (and it is his turn) - why did they switch to Cecil?

hypobole - Sunday, May 22 2011 @ 07:37 AM EDT (#235291) #
Huge comeback in the late innings for Vegas, culminating with a winning 2 run home run in the top of the 10th by Travis Snider, his first since he went down. I bet that was a gorilla off his back. BTW, the 51's are now 16-4 in May after that 10 game losing streak to finish off April.
Chuck - Sunday, May 22 2011 @ 08:17 AM EDT (#235292) #

I bet that was a gorilla off his back

Gorilla indeed. By my reckoning, Snider's homerless AB streak, majors and minors included, was up to 157.

Pretty hard to complain if you're a Jays fan right now. The major-league club is hanging around the playoff picture, despite some injuries early on. The Wells contract is off the books. Bautista is, well, what is there left to say? He's kind of a big deal. The lineup should be bolstered by both Lind and Lawrie fairly soon.

On the minor-league side, the clubs are doing exceptionally well, while a number of prospects, including some of the key ones (Lawrie, Gose, D'Arnaud, McGuire, Thames, Marisnick, Jimenez), are having outstanding seasons. Things should get more interesting this summer as some of the younger talent like Sanchez, Syndergaard and Sweeney gets added to rosters and the 2011 draft unfolds.
cybercavalier - Sunday, May 22 2011 @ 10:09 PM EDT (#235313) #
Re greenfrog:

Given this season with Bautista, Lind carry much of the offense load with Escobar and Arencibia helping out, the major league club's standing is reasonable. Well, for the 3B situation, once Snider comes back to Toronto and not demoted again, Bautista could be moved to 3B. With Davis, Snider and a platoon including Eric Thames, the major league Jays are fine. However, it may only happen next season.

As a minor note, it seems no one was reading my comment while I read other's. Intriguing....

bpoz - Monday, May 23 2011 @ 09:31 AM EDT (#235329) #
Cybercavalier, The move of J Bautista to 3rd base as you suggested, seems possible. However IMO when he played most of ST there and switched to RF days before the season started, many people questioned what the motivating factor was.

I know what the explanation was, but I believe J Bautista forced the move. I accept the possibility that I could be wrong.
If J Bautista can be comfortable & awesome at RF then stay there. If Lawrie has to reach a certain standard of being ready for his promotion to the Jays as a 3rd baseman, then I will just wait. I am waiting for greatness and see Lawrie as a strong possibility of providing that for us at 3b.

Just curious, but is there some level of defense that a winning team should have? Evaluating positions, I see Tex & Canno of the NYY as high level defense & also Y Escorar & A Hill as high level defense. I hope Lind & JPA right now are at a good enough level of defense, I expect improvement as they get more reps.

Pretty hard to complain if you're a Jays fan right now.

Well, true. Except, that, being a Leafs fan too, I COULD complain that MLSE didn't outbid Rogers for the services of one Alex Anthopoulos.... :-)
