As for the U.S. based affiliates, the news wasn't nearly as good.  How about an adjective for each loss on the farm?  How about nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea?

Colorado Springs 5 Las Vegas 3 - Game 1 (7 Innings)

Colorado Springs, CO - The Rockies affiliate pulled this one out with three runs in the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit.

Batting - Darin Mastroianni (2/2) had a perfect night at the plate with a walk, a double and an RBI.  Adam Loewen (2/3) drove in a run while Jayson Nix (1/2) tripled, took one for the team and collected a run batted in.  David Cooper (1/3) and Ricardo Nanita (1/3) each had a double.  Brett Lawrie (0/3), Ryan Shealy (0/3), Chris Woodward (0/3) and Brian Jeroloman (0/3) had less than tasty bagels.  The BJBBM remains at 27.

Running - Mastroianni was caught trying to steal second.

Pitching - Kyle Drabek went the distance in this one.  However, he was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits (including a homer) and five walks over six innings.  He struck out three and picked up seven groundball outs.  Of his 92 pitches, 51 were strikes.

Defence - Cooper had one clank off his glove at first.  Woodward started 4-3 and 4-6-3 double plays.

Colorado Springs 10 Las Vegas 4 - Game 2 (7 Innings)

Colorado Springs, CO - The SkySox completed the doubleheader sweep by scoring in every inning except the second.  The 51s spread out their runs in the sixth and seventh.

Batting - David Cooper (3/3) was the one with the perfect night at the plate as he drew a walk and drove in a run. Chris Woodward (2/3) had two doubles and an RBI and Ramon Vazquez (2/3) also brought home a run.  Ryan Budde (1/3) belted a solo homer and Darin Mastroianni (1/3) had a double.  Jayson Nix (1/4) had the other hit for Las Vegas.  Adam Loewen (0/3) drew a walk but Brett Lawrie (0/4) and Manny Mayorson (0/3) were the less than dynamic duo with the lumber.

Running - N/A.

Pitching - Mike MacDonald was pegged for six runs on 10 hits (including two dingers - ain't no outfield fence high enough!), two walks and hit a batter while pegging a batter over three innings.  He threw a wild pitch and failed to strike out a hitter.  In short, it was a game he would like to keep forgetting.  Ronald Uviedo was gonged for three runs (including a tater) on two hits and two runs.  He also uncorked a wild pitch but struck out two over two innings.  Lefty Sean Henn concluded a forgettable night with a run on one hit and two walks over one frame but did collect two Ks.

Defence - Vazquez botched one at short but started a 6-4 double play with Mayorson.  Nix nailed a runner at third from center field.

Reading 10 New Hampshire 2

Manchester, NH - Reading busted open a 4-2 game with five runs in the sixth and another run in the ninth to reach double digits.

Batting - The Fisher Cats only mustered three singles, courtesy of Moises Sierra (3/4).  Adeiny Hechavarria (0/3) drew a walk.  Anthony Gose (0/4), Mike McDade (0/4), Travis d'Arnaud (0/4), Yan Gomes (0/3), John Tolisano (0/3), Craig Stansberry (0/3) and Justin Jackson (0/3) were the unlucky seven.

Running - Next question.

Pitching - Chad Jenkins was charged with the loss as he was victimized for four runs on five hits (including one homer) and two walks while two of his pitches avoided the catcher's glove.  He only struck out one but seven of his 11 outs in play were bound by gravity.  Yohan Pino was a human pinata as he was whacked around for five runs on five hits (including a long ball) in his one inning of work.  Rei Gonzalez restored order with two scoreless frames by scattering two hits and a walk.  Lefty Bobby Korecky was nicked for a run on two hits in the ninth.

Defence - Hechavarria threw one away at short but did start a pair of 6-3 double plays.  Stansberry, Tolisano and Gomes were involved in a DP of the around the horn variety.

Fort Myers 8 Dunedin 5

Dunedin, FL - Five runs in the fourth and another in the fifth by the Twins affiliate was too much for Dunedin to overcome.

Batting - Ryan Goins (2/4), Kevin Nolan (2/4) and Brad Glenn (2/4) accounted for two-thirds of the Dunedin hit total.  Goins doubled and drove in two runs and Nolan drove in one.  A.J. Jimenez (1/5), Sean Ochinko (1/4) and Ryan Schimpf (1/4) all had doubles.  Kevin Ahrens (0/3) drew a walk but Brad McElroy (0/5) and Jon Talley (0/4) did not.

Running - Nothing to see here.

Pitching - Asher Wojciechowski had no mojo in this one.  The 41st selection of the 2010 draft was knocked around for six runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings to take the loss.  He also threw one to the backstop but struck out six and recorded five outs on the green.  Scott Gracey struck out a batter over 1 1/3 perfect frames and lefty Aaron Loup allowed just one hit in 2/3 of a scoreless inning.  Steven Turnbull allowed two runs (one earned) over two innings but rung up three batters.

Defence - Turnbull threw one away from the mound.  Jimenez and Schmipf completed a 2-4 double play.

Lansing - Scheduled Day Off.

Vancouver 4 Eugene 1

Vancouver, BC - The Canadians scored all of their runs in the seventh to topple the Padres affiliate.

Batting - Jonathan Jones (2/4) had the lone multi-hit game for the C's and Randy Schwartz (1/3) was the other Vancouver player to reach base more than once by adding a walk.  Balbino Fuenmayor (1/4) had a two-run single,  Shane Opitz (1/3) singled home the winning run while Chris Schaeffer (1/3) did not need the world's most dangerous band to drive home the other Canadians run.  Yeico Aponte (1/3) made the hit column while Jonathon Berti (0/3) and Nicholas Baligod (0/3) each had a base on balls.  Stephen McQuail (0/4) was the only Canadian not to advance safely.

Running - Opitz and Aponte were successful in their steal attempts.

Pitching - Lefty David Rollins gave up one run on four hits and a walk over four innings. He threw a wild pitch and committed a balk but racked up three Ks and five groundouts.  Brandon Kaye was the winning pitcher as he allowed just one hit and a hit by pitch over 3 shutout innings.  He collected one strikeout and seven outs on the infield.  Bryan Longpre earned the save with two scoreless frames of one-hit ball while whiffing two.

Defence - Berti was bamboozled once at second but started a 4-6-3 double play with Opitz and Schwartz.  Schaeffer nailed a basestealer from behind the plate and Kaye picked off a runner at first.

Burlington 2 Bluefield 1 (11 Innings)

Bluefield, WV - The Jays overcame a 1-0 deficit with a run in the sixth only to lose in overtime.

Batting - The Bluefield offence was of the one-base variety.  Daniel Arcila (1/4), Gustavo Pierre (1/4), Andy Fermin (1/4), Chris Hawkins (1/4) and Cody Bartlett (1/4) all singled and walked with Bartlett driving home the lone run.  Kevin Pillar (1/5) had the other base hit.  Art Charles (0/5), Aaron Munoz (0/5), Carlos Ramirez (0/4) and Leo Hernandez (0/1) all wore the collar.  Bluefield was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and also left 11 men on base.

Running - Hawkins hocked second but Pierre could not.

Pitching - Lefty Tyler Ybarra lasted three innings and yielded a run on two hits (including a homer) while whiffing three.  Toronto native Les Williams also punched out three batters while scattering three hits over three shutout innings to go along with...wait for it...three groundball outs.  Milciades Santana pitched 1 2/3 innings and did not give up a run despite a hit and two walks.  Thomas Berryhill stranded a runner for Santana and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless frames.  Like Ybarra and Williams, Berryhill racked up three Ks to offset three hits and a walk.  Like Ybarra, Andrew Sikula was burned by the long ball among his two hits to take the loss but he did strike out a pair.

Defence - Bartlett fired one away at short but did start a 6-4-3 double play with Arcila and Charles.  Munoz pegged a runner at second from behind the dish.

GCL Blue Jays 5 GCL Tigers 4

Lakeland, FL - The Jays overcame a 3-1 first inning deficit with two runs in the third and singles in the fifth and eighth.

Batting - The hammer of Thor was wielded by Dickie Joe Thon (2/3) as he belted his first professional home run to put the G-Jays on the board.  Thon also added an RBI single.  Seth Conner (2/2) had a better day at the plate with a solo homer, RBI double and a walk.  Angel Gomez also had a two-hit afternoon and the other hit came from Jorge Vega-Rosado who belted a home run in the eighth.  Dalton Pompey (0/4), Eric Arce (0/4), Chris Peters (0/4), Yudelmis Hernandez (0/3), Santiago Nessy (0/2), Alexys Rodriguez (0/2), Christian Frias (0/1) and Matt Abraham (0/1) were the Blue Jays version of "Eight Men Out".

Running
- No clanks with the leather here.

Pitching - Joe Musgrove, the 46th player selected in the 2011 draft, lasted just two innings in this one.  The 6-foot-5 hurler allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, a walk and hit a batter while striking out one.  Fellow 6-foot-5 righty Nicholas Purdy scattered five hits over 3 2/3 shutout innings to earn the victory.   The Cobourg, Ontario native posted a K-BB total of 5-0 while three of his four outs in play were on the grass.  Alex Ramirez stranded both inherited runners from Purdy and worked around a hit and a hit batter in 1 1/3 shutout innings to get a hold.  Julio Carmona was also credited with a hold despite surrendering up a solo homer among his two hits but he struck out a batter in his one inning of work.  Colby Broussard gave up just one hit and struck out a man in a scoreless ninth to collect the save.

Defence - Nessy and Rodriguez each had a ball get behind them at the plate.  Nessy was 1-for-3 in throwing out basestealers with one of the steals involving home plate.

DSL Blue Jays 0 DSL Tigers 0 (3 Innings - Suspended)

San Pedro de Macoris, DR - This game was called one batter into the top of the fourth inning.

Batting - The batting order a collective 0-for-9 to start this one.

Running - Refer to batting for your answer.

Pitching - Eyerys Guerrero allowed just one hit and one walk in three-plus innings. He struck out three and induced four groundouts.

Defence - Nelson Aguida couldn't keep a ball in front of him at the plate.

2.  Dickie Joe Thon, GCL

1.  Seth Conner, GCL

Extra Innings...

The Province
has a Q & A with C's manager John Schneider.

Q: I've heard that you caught a lot of the current Jays starters in the minors ... Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil and others ...

A: I caught Ricky the most out of the group that's up there in Toronto now. That was in Double-A. He was just a raw prospect, great stuff but not a whole lot of consistency. To see him doing what he's doing now, it's a credit to him and the work he's done.

Q: You still keep in touch with those guys?

A: Aaron Hill's one of my best buddies. It's cool to have those guys up there. I talk to them whenever I can. We keep in touch whether it's a text or a quick phone call.

The Canadian Press catches up with Canadian and Canadians pitchers Eric Brown and Brandon Kaye.

Making the transition to pro ball easier for Kaye is the fact his half-brother, Scott Richmond, is also in the Blue Jays system. He pitches for the Las Vegas 51’s.

"It's something nobody ever gets a chance to experience and even to relate to someone who has already been to the show and played professional baseball. I've got all the inside scoops, what to expect, what I need to do to make it to the next level.  As a fellow pitcher, he just says to be confident out there, make sure you throw strikes and just go out there and work hard every day."

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph has a feature on pitcher Myles Duvall.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Duvall expected to be drafted in June, but his name was never called. At least not until after the draft when his phone rang with good news.

“The Mets actually said they were going to draft me on the second day of the draft and it didn’t work out. I got a call about 20 minutes after the draft was over by (Toronto area scout) Michael Wagner in Dallas and he said we’ve got a jersey for you, we’ve got an opportunity for you to play now and I jumped right on it.”

In the second game of the Las Vegas doubleheader in Colorado Springs, Lawrie struck out 4 times.  Perhaps the hand is still bothering him some.
greenfrog - Wednesday, July 20 2011 @ 11:05 AM EDT (#238931) #
My sense (not backed up by any evidence) is that Lawrie might not let on that his hand isn't 100%, because he wants to play (and get called up) so badly. On the other hand, maybe he's just struggling a bit because of the long layoff.

McGowan went 2.1 innings this morning in the FSL- 2 singles, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 1 pop-up, 1 ground ball and 1 fly ball.  It all added up to no runs.

At least it is coolish (!) in South Florida, and they are going to get some rain soon.  I wonder if they will close the dome tomorrow afternoon to make it more comfortable.

After seeing the 4k box score last night I was wondering to myself if Lawrie might be too high-energy to do something like DH. I suppose a rushed return or layoff-killed timing makes more sense, but i like my hair-brained and baseless idea.

Speaking of good stuff, it looks like Jays are on the verge of signing 16 year old Mexican right-hander Roberto Osuna. The link below (in Spanish, unfortunately) explains that he's in Dunedin for a physical. The article also speculates that the deal might be upwards of $3m.

R Romero Vaughan - Wednesday, July 20 2011 @ 09:47 PM EDT (#238980) #

The article also mentions:

He is considered the most advanced prospect in Mexican baseball

He has already played in the Mexican league as a 16 year old

He throws up to 95 mph

He is signing for more than Luis Heredia signed for (PIT)

Exciting stuff!

Lawrie went 3/5 tonight with a double - most encouraging!

H. Alvarez threw 7 shutout innings; McGowan 2.1 shutout innings with 4 K's (the lack of pitch counts in MiLB box scores frustrates the crap out of me!);
Aaron Sanchez had another reversal tonight (1.2 IP 5 ER - he walked in a run then gave up a grand slam in the 7th)); Cardona didn't have a good day either; am I the only one who's noticed Daniel Barnes?

MatO - Thursday, July 21 2011 @ 09:50 AM EDT (#238989) #

am I the only one who's noticed Daniel Barnes?

No.  A couple of spot starts actually pulled his numbers down.  At 21 he's not too old for the league either.  The one thing to consider is whether he's something like a Jamie Vermilyea whose stuff blew away the lower minors but didn't play well as he got closer to the majors.  Usually if they think the guy is a prospect they'll give him an extended run at starting.  Anyways, an interesting pitcher.  Maybe Gerry can ask about him next time he's in Lansing.

Gerry - Thursday, July 21 2011 @ 09:53 AM EDT (#238990) #

Barnes is relatively short, by major league standards, and he is essentially a two pitch pitcher, a fastball and a curveball.  I don't have my notes with me but from what I remember the fastball has average velocity.

Barnes has been very successful so far but I don't know if he can have that success at the higher levels of the minor leagues.

Brent S - Thursday, July 21 2011 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#238995) #
The interesting thing about Barnes is that he was very mediocre in his junior season at Princeton (5.14 ERA, 40 K, 19 BB in 49 IP).

Around draft time, Baseball America said he could dial up his fastball to 93 with a bit of life, but lost velocity has the game wore on. Without seeing him, this fact along with his two pitch arsenal seems to scream reliever. But you never know.
