A playoff series will go to the wire while a Lansing starter dazzled.

Las Vegas 1    Sacramento 7

Not much worth repeating in this one. David Cooper picked up his 50th double of the year as part of a two-hit night. Adeiny Hechavarria was 1-for-4 with a double but struck out three times.

Chad Beck started and got rocked. Walked seven and allowed six runs (five earned) in four and two thirds.

Remeber Graham Godfrey? Well, he's starting for Sacramento and picked up the win to move to 14-3 with an ERA of 2.68. I don't think he's much of a prospect but those are gaudy numbers for a PCL starter.

New Hampshire 2    Trenton 0

Given the shutout you'd figure Hutch or Molina was pitching. They weren't. It was our man Dustin McGowan who went 3.2 and allowed four hits and three walks but punched out seven. From there a trio of relievers tidied up the whitewash.

Moises Sierra was 3-for-4 with a triple and stole home. So that's a nice night. Travis D'Arnaud and Anthony Gose each had a hit. One of them stole a base. It was D'Arnaud. I swear.

Clearwater @ Dunedin- PPD

Great Lakes 1    Lansing 8

Jake Marisnick didn't play but no matter. Matt Nuzzo was 3-for-3 while Marcus Knecht went 0-for-2 but scored twice and knocked in a run. Carlos Perez doubled.

The story in this one was Sean Nolin. The tall lefty dominated going six and allowing a run on three hits and a walk against 10 strikeouts.

Vancouver 2    Boise 4

Nothing happened here. Seriously. Jesse Hernandez started and wasn't good. None of the hitters did anything noteworthy. Jonathon Berti tripled. There. Let's move on.

Elizabethton 5    Bluefield 2

Bluefield couldn't close out their playoff series on Thursday thanks in part to some wildness from Myles Jaye. Jaye was working on three days rest and it showed as he allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. 2011 draftees Joe Musgrove and Jeremy Gabryszwski finished things off nicely. Musgrove allowed a run on four hits with three punchouts in his 3.2 innings while Gabryszwski went two and struck out three against just two hits.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Dustin McGowan- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K

2nd Star: Moises Sierra- 3-for-4, 3B, SB (home)

1st Star: Sean Nolin- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K

Playoff update:

Bluefield are currently playing in the playoffs.

Lansing are in.

New Hampshire's magic number is 1.

Dunedin have a 1.5 game lead with their last four games of the season against second place Clearwater.  Because of a rainout yesterday they play a doubleheader today.  If Dunedin can at least split the DH they will be in good shape.  If they sweep they secure a playoff spot.  If they lose both they will have to win the last two games against Clearwater.

Vancouver are in the playoffs if the season ended today.  Eugene, the first half champions, have a one game lead with two games left to play.  Eugene need to maintain that lead for Vancouver to have a chance to back-in to the playoffs.

Las Vegas and the GCL Jays are eliminated.

McDade has really fallen off a cliff in the second half. I know he was injured but he really has not picked things up since his return.

Pre All-Star .310 with 14 HR, 62 RBI, and an 880 OPS
Post All-Star .195 with 1 HR, 10 RBI, and a 510 OPS

From a developmental standpoint you don't really care that Vegas missed the playoffs - it's not an affiliation you are trying to upkeep and there aren't really any prospects there that you'd think would benefit greatly from a playoff run.

Dunedin won 4-1 against Clearwater. Ryan Tepera pitched very well.

A DH sweep for the D-Jays and a win for Bluefield behind 2 doubles, a triple and 5 RBIs for Chris Hawkins. The Fisher Cats are down by a run in the ninth in Portland.

Sanchez pitched 5 shutout innings for Vancouver. 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K. That's two encouraging starts in a row for him. Sanchez is kind of the forgotten man for the Jays these days, what with Nicolino, Syndergaard and others excelling. It wasn't that long ago that Sanchez was the 2010 Jays draftee that everyone was most excited about.

Dunedin clinched a playoff spot, New Hampshire did too, that makes four Blue Jay teams in the playoffs. #winning.

Ryan Tepera pitched a great game in the first game for Dunedin.

Chris Hawkins had an outstanding game for Bluefield. Hawkins was 3-5 with 5 RBI's including a big three run double in the eighth when Bluefield were clinging to a 8-7 lead. Kevin Pillar has three hits as well and he is hitting 500 in the playoffs, Hawkins is hitting 429.

NH, Dunedin, and Lansing are playoff bound, Bluefield advanced to the championship series with a 16-hit attack and five RBI by Chris Hawkins.

Vancouver has a good chance to make it if Eugene wins either tonight or tomorrow and the VanCan's win once or Everett loses once tonight or tomorrow.

I'm still blown away at the idea of five playoff teams in one system.

Hawkins in Bluefield  had a very fine season for a kid who just turned 20 a couple of weeks ago. 318/.375/.492 with 14/4 SB/CS in 68 games.

His teammate Kevin Pillar had an even better season .345/.377/.534. No real talk of him at all, not surprising since he's 2 1/2 yrs older than Hawkins (also meaning old for the league) and was a lowly 32nd round pick this year out of Cal State Dominguez Hills, an NCAA Division II school I'd never heard of.  I googled and found out last year he set an NCAA D-II record with a 54 game hitting streak and won a Rawlings/ABCA National  Gold Glove (130 putouts without an error)

I'm sure the Jays  see Pillar as an org guy, since they left the 22 yr old in a rookie league all year, and his 10 BB's the entire regular season don't bode well for future success, but I think I'll still be irrationally following him to see how he does in the future. Hey, you never know...
