It's the off-season, let's play a game.

"What are the worst professional sports (not necessarily  limited to baseball) uniforms of all time?"

A few opening caveats and nominations ...

First, I can't possibly explain or justify it, but I always liked the old mid-70's to mid-'80s Houston Astros uniforms, which always find a place on lists like this one. So, hoorary, J.R. Richard in orange!
Second, like every sane human, I was horrified by the 1976 Chicago White Sox expieriment with shorts -- esentially, softball uniformage came to Comiskey.
Third, we can consider "throwback" uniforms, like this homage to "throw-up" uniiforms by the Denver Bronos last season, but it's always better to show the original if you've got photographic evid ... er, proof.

Finally, Toronto, you are not innocent in this go-round! Remember these horrifying Raptor duds?

I won't even embarrass anyone by showing them wearing one!

Who else, when else? What teams have truly spelled Uniform Ghastly? Lucky You! (UGLY)???

Philladelphia Flyers when they wore the Cooperalls. Terrible.

I'm another fan of the 70/80's Astro outfits - who knows why...probably a memory of childhood.

An interesting image is
for the D-Rays.
Of course, imo, the worst is the overtly racist ones the Cleveland team uses with Chief Wahoo - change it to black face and see how fast protests would show up.

Vancouver Canucks of the Glen Hanlon and Harold Snepst era (huge multi-colored V's).

I also like the Astros' 70s unis. Perhaps due to "Bad News Bears in Breaking Training"? Also, I think they still had those unis the one year I collected baseball cards ('81 or '82 O Pee Chee)

Those Raptors jerseys are awesome. I can picture in my head Acie Earl, Zan Tabak, and Oliver Miller prancing around in those beauts.

Oliver Miller prancing

That literally never happened.

As for the ugliest jerseys, any attempt to do a throw-forward has been awful. MLB did the 21st Century jerseys by the Mariners, and then followed it with, I think, 14 games the following year at the behest of 21st Century Real Estate. Just terrible. Off the top of my head, it was the Royals and Mariners who did it first (Griffey got really into it and had everyone wear their hats backward and colour their shoes with a silver marker), and then Colorado, Pittsburgh, the Mets, San Fran, the Angels, Minny, Arizona and Florida were involved.

When the NHL started their 3rd jersey program, the St. Louis Blues designed uniforms so ugly that Mike Keenan never allowed his team to wear them. Behold. The LA Kings had uniforms so bad they wore them once and never again, now known as the Burger King uniforms. The Islanders are also about to break the ugly scale with these beauties.

80's Padres was pretty bad as well. The 1970's and 80's were just the worst time for uniforms. Most of the worst uniforms in sports happened between about 1975-1985. In hockey, the Canucks had a brutal uniform for a while. I also always thought the Phoenix Coyotes 36 colour ensemble was always ridiculous. This year, Maryland's football program broke out a doozy.

As the self-proclaimed biggest Raps' fan on the site, I really feel the need to stick up fo......wait, no I don't.

Those jerseys are HORRIBLE. I just wish they'd do one of two things: start over, scrap the name, admit that getting caught up in the Jurassic Park thing was a mistake, and become the Huskies. Or, you could simply replace the purple donkeysaur with a flying raptor, the cool bird of prey. And, to make it appealing to the pension fund - just think of the attention it would attract!

All that said, we can at least take solace in the fact that there is no longer purple in the jersey.

I fear that if I were to suggest that this uniform is far too reminiscent of little boys' pyjamas, I might offend many in these parts. So I won't.

"There is nothing wrong with naming the Toronto team the Raptors! They are going to be named after a bird of prey like the Falcons or the Hawks! I can picture thier logo now, with something swooping and majestic... What? A dinosaur? What the fuuuuuuu....."

A paraphrased but accurate assesment of me hearing about the new Toronto NBA expansion team...

Just for the record, the topic of this thread is in NO WAY meant to reflect negative expectations of the new uniform that will be revealed a week from tomorrow ...

(knock wood.)

John Northey - Thursday, November 10 2011 @ 12:24 PM EST (#246586) #
Chuck - sadly too true. The old Jays uni's (like most of the 70's designed ones) were very much looking like pyjamas.

Doesn't change the great memories and stuff. Just means that they were pretty silly. Much prefer the button down style of the 90's or even the black ones like Romero is wearing up top here.

Here's another vote for the disgusting Chief Wahoo things.

Those Broncos jerseys are AWESOME. The Cleveland ones are bad.

New Blue Jay Uniforms get unveiled today.

It's next Friday for the Blue Jays, not today. Today the Marlins are unveiling their new look. On Tuesday the Orioles will reveal that they're returning to the cartoon bird.

Thanks Original Ryan, nice save.  I transposed the dates when jotting them down earlier.
