NOTES

Rafael Lantigua continues to impress. He was 4-5 for Buffalo with two doubles, a walk and a stolen base. He is hitting .300 with a .444 OBP and .541 SLG. Spencer Horwitz picked up two more hits.

As mentioned Chad Dallas starred for New Hampshire. In addition to the 9 K's, he allowed just two hits and two walks over his seven innings. Damiano Palmegiani and Trevor Schwecke homered.

For Vancouver, in game one, Trenton Wallace went 4.1 shutout innings. Rainer Nunez hit his second home run. Jommer Hernandez was 3-4 with two RBI. Josh Kasevich was 2-3.

In Vancouvers second game Rafael Sanchez had a rough introduction to high A. He was charged with six runs over three innings. Josh Kasevich was 4-4, giving him six hits for the day, enough to raise his average by 60 points.

Bowden Francis pitched in Dunedin's first game on a rehab assignment. He threw three shutout innings. The game went to extra innings. Tucker Toman doubled in the winning run in the eighth.

Irv Carter started game two and was taken deep twice by Tampa hitters. He was charged with those two runs in three innings. Tampa won despite having just three hits in the game.

First time watching Dallas. Fastball was 93-94, but he located it well for the most part. His slider was a thing of beauty in the 3 innings I saw. Command was excellent and a lot of late break.

I'd only seen 1 PA from Lantigua, a 101 EV HR about a week ago. Watched all his PA's last night. He hit the ball hard for a guy his size, although his 1st double was a medium oppo field fly that was blown in by the wind and misplayed by Franklin Barretto in RF. Even his one out was a warning track shot to LF.

His defence in LF was brutal though. His first 4 plays : 1) A liner over his head he misjudged. 2) ball off the wall that he didn't handle cleanly. 3) a single he charged. Poor decision attempting to throw out the runner on 1st going to third, allowing the batter to get to 2nd. 4) Charged a ground ball single. Tried to bare-hand the ball and overran it.

Also saw the ABS challenge system in action. Lantigua challenged and won his when a low strike call was actually below the strike zone. Also saw the other team challenge twice. One they were correct, but a called ball they thought was a strike was about 4 inches outside.

Thanks, hypobole. Does Dallas have a third pitch-maybe a change- for LHBs?
hypobole - Saturday, May 20 2023 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#429058) #
Don't think he has a change, he threw a few curves as his 3rd pitch.

A large quantity of AA & AAA pitchers is forming. Zulueta and Juenger in AAA. AA is loaded and I expect T Wallace, TJ Brock, Fluharty to be promoted soon. D Santos may get a promotion within a month. A Macko not until late in the season.

Hope some good relievers at least develop for next year.

I am not sure what Lantigua's best position is. He has played infield as much as outfield. I don't know if its major league ready in the infield. His error totals are not high, not that that's a measure of much.

Lantigua was originally an infielder so he's probably still learning how to read off the bat.

Dallas usually throws a CB to lefties. Mostly FB/SL to RHH. He has a change but I've never actually seen him use it and I've seen him pitch at least four times.

Jays may want to rethink using Lyle Lin behind the plate. In the three games he's caught since being acquired, the club has allowed 16, 9, and 8 runs - often mostly off terrible starts.

I only saw Dallas once last year and, in general, it was a poor outing because his control was awful. As hypobole notes though, the SL was a pitch that both LHH and RHH seemed to have trouble with due to the late break. There’s a potential for a major league reliever built around that pitch and maybe a tick up on the FB having to throw only one inning.

Went back to last week when Lantigua played a couple of games at 3rd. Made all the plays including some hot shot backhands. Throws were pretty accurate, but not overly strong - arm seems more suited to 2nd base.

Does anyone have a recent scouting report on Horwitz? He's hitting .326/.450/.437 for Buffalo, with a 30:33 BB:K ratio. He has only 1 HR, although he did hit 12 HR in each of 2021 and 2022. He turned 25 in November.

I guess there isn't a lot of room for him on the Blue Jays, as long as Guerrero Jr. and Belt are healthy. I wonder if there is another team that would be well suited for him (with a park that is favourable to LHB with his skillset). Maybe he could become a bit like Arraez (excellent plate discipline with little power), although Arraez undoubtedly has better bat-to-ball skills.

Horwitz hits well but doesn't really impact the ball and has never stood out in any of the looks I've had (more than a handful). He can hit the ball hard into the gaps but first basemen (with some LF sprinkled in) that only hit 12-15 HR just don't have much value... He's also going to be 26 in November so he's not exactly young.

He might be a solid bench or platoon bat but I doubt he's an impact MLB regular.
Nigel - Saturday, May 20 2023 @ 10:57 PM EDT (#429100) #
I’m not sure Horwitz can play any defensive position, even 1st, at a semi capable level. That’s the main problem.

Uh oh.  I hadn't realized Horowitz was that limited defensively.
But a role on the shuttle with Lukes and Lopez, coming up for injuries or another bat over a weekend?  Works for me.

I could even see Biggio going down for a bit.  2-Hit is doing his bit, trying to hit his way into the lineup.
