Boxscores

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Sean Keys, Vancouver

2. Cutter Coffey, Vancouver

1. Victor Arias, Vancouver

Notes

Joey Loperfido homered for the Herd's lone run. Davis Schneider singled and walked and Steward Berroa singled and stole a base. Lazaro Estrada gave up three runs in four innings. Connor Overton coughed up six runs in two frames.

Devereaux Harrison did not have it as he was dinged for two homers and five runs on seven hits and five walks over 4-2/3 innings, striking out only two. Ryan Jennings stranded both Harrison runners and fanned three over 2-1/3 scoreless frames. Cade Doughty had a three-hit night with two doubles and an RBI and Charles McAdoo picked up a pair of two-base hits. Jace Bohrofen singled twice and walked.

The Canadians had their longest game of the season at 3:47 but at least they won. All nine batters reached base at least once with seven recording a hit. Victor Arias had a team-best four hits with an RBI and scored three times from the leadoff spot. Arias got away with some daring baserunning by going to third after the Hops third baseman and shortstop bumped into each other on a ground ball to the left side of the infield. Cutter Coffey had three hits and four RBI and is starting to percolate by going 7-for-15 over his last three games. Sean Keys had the lone extra-base hit and went 2-for-3 with a walk and knocked home three. Jackson Hornung had an interesting game. He had two infield singles, a sacrifice fly, a nice leaping catch near the left field fence and stole home as part of a double steal with Nick Goodwin. He was also able to deftly avoid a tag at third base after advancing on a comebacker. Arjun Nimmala reached twice with a walk before getting drilled in the back. Jackson Wentworth gave up just two hits but walked five, leading to two runs allowed over 3-2/3 innings in which he struck out three. Pat Gallagher was the winner with 1-1/3 shutout innings, stranding two runners while getting away with three walks. Vancouver issued 15 walks in total, and Hillsboro handed out 11. Julio Ortiz was credited with a hold but had the worst pitching line with four runs surrendered over one inning. JJ Sánchez got the final out of the game and was the only hurler not to walk anyone.

Tucker Toman had a two-hit night, including an RBI double. Edward Duran singled home a run and walked. Brock Tibbits had an infield single in his lone at-bat. He was replaced by Peyton Powell at first base an inning later due to injury. Gilberto Batista was gouged for four runs over five innings, including a home run among five hits and two walks. Batista struck out three batters as did Bennett Flynn and Johan Simon giving Dunedin a total of nine (that number again!). Simon pitched three innings but gave up a run to take the loss.

You have to wonder if the umpire had a bad night... 26 walks is excessive.

Yeuni Munoz's ugly injury history resurfaces - he's gone on the IL again.

That's now 37 K in 22.2 IP for Juaron Watts-Brown.

Not sure he makes it as a starter but BB/9 is down quite a bit from last year and he's fun to watch.
John Northey - Thursday, May 01 2025 @ 11:18 AM EDT (#459499) #
For Juaron Watts-Brown given his age (23) he needs to be promoted to AA soon to stay a decent prospect imo. He isn't getting 5 IP per start which is a bad sign imo. I suspect he is skyrocketing his pitch count far too quickly with those K's. 4.8 IP/start in the minors so far. For college kids you gotta climb fast, fast, fast to be a good prospect. Just his 2nd year here but the clock is ticking loudly. Are his K's due to 100 MPH+ fastballs or a killer second pitch? With 14.7 K/9 he should be able to climb fast in the pen if he can keep finding the strike zone. As a starter it is harder as he needs to be able to get 6 IP per start to be a solid one imo.

Watts-Brown gets his Ks mostly on slider/curveballs. He gets some Ks on the heater (mostly 93-95 mph.

The FCL Blue Jays roster is up... no real surprises and not a lot of high-end talent coming over from the DSL. Catcher Franklyn Rojas did not move over this year. Yorman Licourt has the highest ceiling. Aldo Gaxiola is interesting- has some pop and controlled the zone pretty well in the DSL

The most intriguing DSL arms actually came over late last year: Silvano Hechavarria (upper 90s, solid slider) and Samuel Colmenares.

Both Beckles and Dominguez were previous pros in other orgs that were released and signed by Toronto.

Hope Bonilla and Meza take that next step.

BA mentioned King was up to 97 earlier this spring and Carson Medina got a shout out

personally like the idea of slowing down the ifa ladder

So we're officially a month in now, so i'll take a look at our milb hitters. (i've given up on pitchers because they always break).

of course these samples are still tiny and don't mean that much at this point but hey let's see how we've started. (Warning: we've mostly started poorly.)

At AAA I don't care too much about age - if a guy's hitting well in AAA then he can be useful in MLB, if he's not, he's not.

AAA

Excellers:

* CF Clase (23): 86pa, 15.1b%, 23.3k%, .490bip, .352avg, .056iso, 151wrc+
* 1B Tirotta (26): 64pa, 15.6b%, 32.8k%, .400bip, .278avg, .241iso, 148wrc+
* IF Stefanic (29): 89pa, 14.6b%, 11.2k%, .377bip, .329avg, .043iso, 145wrc+
* C Sanchez (28): 51pa, 9.8b%, 27.5k%, .357bip, .289avg, .200iso, 137wrc+

Clase the obvious exciting one in AAA to start. He's a real prospect with real tools. And it's an excellent line so far.....except that it comes on a highly unsustainable babip which will absolute come down a huge amount. We hope that as the babip comes down the power comes up to make up for it. Good start but not a line to depend on yet.

Nice stars for Tirotta, Stefanic, Sanchez too. Not guys to hope on as mlb regulars or anything but all who could plausibly help in a pinch. Of the three Stefanic's line is the least surprising - he's consistently been excellent in AAA, albeit with zero pop, and could help out in a pinch in mlb at any time. Though his lack of power means he doesn't address our biggest need.

OKers:

* IF Rivera (24): 16pa, 18.8b%, 25.0k%, .333bip, .231avg, .154iso, 116wrc+
* OF Robertson (27): 63pa, 14.3b%, 27.0k%, .294bip, .226avg, .170iso, 106wrc+
* UT Barger (25): 45pa, 11.1b%, 28.9k%, .250bip, .211avg, .211iso, 99wrc+
* UT Schneider (26): 51pa, 17.6b%, 41.2k%, .381bip, .190avg, .167iso, 96wrc+
* OF Loperfido (26): 95pa, 8.4b%, 30.5k%, .308bip, .229avg, .157iso, 88wrc+

Nothing here to get excited about at this point but not awful either. most of these guys still have a prospecty tinge to them to hope that this would be the cold stretch for them which they will improve on.

Baddies:

* C Bethancourt (33): 45pa, 8.9b%, 15.6k%, .100bip, .158avg, .289iso, 71wrc+
* CF Berroa (26): 79pa, 10.1b%, 25.3k%, .294bip, .211avg, .042iso, 57wrc+
* 1B Nunez (24): 56pa, 7.1b%, 30.4k%, .219bip, .180avg, .140iso, 55wrc+
* IF Martinez (23): 76pa, 9.2b%, 39.5k%, .222bip, .147avg, .132iso, 44wrc+

very dissappointing start for Orelvis, though to be fair that was a horrendous start that has been slowly improving. But there's nothing to like about his post-suspension line at this point, at all. I'm hopeful on Nunez so this start is dissappoing too, though it's a rally small sample and solid components make this easy to build on.

These slow starts for Bethancourt and Berroa probably have zero impact on their bench help upside this year. They can help in a pinch in their roles regardless.

Uglies:

* 1B Palmegiani (25): 48pa, 16.7b%, 29.2k%, .160bip, .103avg, .026iso, 31wrc+
* IF Turconi (26): 28pa, 14.3b%, 28.6k%, .188bip, .130avg, .043iso, 27wrc+
* CF Varsho (28): 21pa, 0.0b%, 23.8k%, .200bip, .158avg, .000iso, -4wrc+
* IF Jimenez (24): 0pa,
* IF Kasevich (24): 0pa,

I think Turconi's already been replaced by Rivera, and neither are names to care about. Palmegiani is a guy i'd probably like to see replaced by one of the AA guys tbh.

At the lower levels I care more about ages:

AA

Age-Appropriate

* OF Martinez (22): 23pa, 26.1b%, 21.7k%, .273bip, .188avg, .000iso, 103wrc+
* IF Paulino (22): 47pa, 6.4b%, 40.4k%, .364bip, .214avg, .143iso, 93wrc+
* IF Harry (22): 22pa, 9.1b%, 22.7k%, .333bip, .250avg, .050iso, 84wrc+

Decent lines for their ages but nothing exciting. But decent enough.

Slightly Old for Level

* OF Pinango (23): 89pa, 13.5b%, 23.6k%, .412bip, .320avg, .200iso, 173wrc+
* OF Bohrofen (23): 89pa, 9.0b%, 34.8k%, .289bip, .222avg, .185iso, 102wrc+
* IF Dejesus (23): 40pa, 5.0b%, 45.0k%, .500bip, .263avg, .132iso, 98wrc+
* OF Da.Brown (23): 29pa, 17.2b%, 20.7k%, .278bip, .208avg, .083iso, 96wrc+
* IF McAdoo (23): 81pa, 7.4b%, 40.7k%, .357bip, .200avg, .053iso, 52wrc+
* C Sharp (23): 36pa, 0.0b%, 36.1k%, .217bip, .139avg, .000iso, -22wrc+

Pinango the one bright spot in NH. That's a great line even considering the high babip. This hitting level deserves a promotion if he keeps it up and at his age there's not a lot of reason to hold him back if he keeps it up much longer.

The rest all have had dissappointing starts and not good enough for their age. Mostly not disastrous but need improving and quickly. Pretty awful from McAdoo tho, a guy who i was hopeful on even after his poor post-trade performance last year - but this is an even more horrendous line this year to start.

Old for Level

* UT Doughty (24): 4pa, 0.0b%, 25.0k%, 1.000bip, .750avg, .500iso, 469wrc+
* 1B Williams (24): 84pa, 9.5b%, 32.1k%, .261bip, .189avg, .122iso, 72wc+
* OF Schreck (24): 47pa, 17.0b%, 34.0k%, .238bip, .135avg, .027iso, 64wrc+
* IF Rivera (24): 46pa, 6.5b%, 52.2k%, .333bip, .163avg, .093iso, 39wrc+

Terrible stuff here too. I know many were hopeful on Williams, and I know was hopeful on Schreck, but there is nothing remotely good here to start.

A+

Young for Level

* IF Nimmala (19): 94pa, 8.5b%, 21.3k%, .333bip, .294avg, .247iso, 143wrc+

Clearly the jewel of the system. Not a perfect line but a very, very good one. No rush to promote him but he's close to a level where you might need some strong specific arguments to hold him back.

Age Appropriate

* OF Arias (21): 97pa, 12.4b%, 21.6k%, .403bip, .310avg, .131iso, 136wrc+
* IF Coffey (21): 78pa, 9.0b%, 30.8k%, .295bip, .229avg, .186iso, 91wrc+

Everything to like about Arias again. He looks like a well above average prospect. I'd like to see the babip drop and the power rise but i also pretty much expect that to happen.

Coffey with a decent enough start. Not excelling but holding his own at a good age.

Slightly Old for Level

* IF Harry (22): 52pa, 9.6b%, 19.2k%, .314bip, .277avg, .213iso, 126wrc+
* C Parker (22): 57pa, 8.8b%, 19.3k%, .297bip, .265avg, .204iso, 122wrc+
* IF Pinto (22): 64pa, 10.9b%, 17.2k%, .238bip, .246avg, .246iso, 120wrc+
* 3B Keys (22): 80pa, 17.5b%, 17.5k%, .234bip, .206avg, .143iso, 111wrc+

All solid here. All could be moved up fairly quickly, and Harry already has (but maybe not permanently). Parker the most interesting here given his position and the consistency of his line. Keys the one that is a bit worrying as his upside is supposed to be higher but his line is the worst here and has the most holes.

A

Age Appropriate

* OF Shaw (20): 46pa, 26.1b%, 28.3k%, .278bip, .212avg, .182iso, 149wrc+
* UT Chirinos (20): 48pa, 18.8b%, 25.0k%, .269bip, .184avg, .105iso, 100wrc+
* OF Joseph (20): 24pa, 0.0b%, 25.0k%, .235bip, .208avg, .208iso, 71wrc+

Great start from Shaw. Don't know nearly enough about him to know if he's a guy to watch at all tho. Chirinos also solid. Joseph not so much but he's barely played for some reason.

Slightly Old for Level

* OF Munoz (21): 71pa, 9.9b%, 29.6k%, .417bip, .323avg, .323iso, 189wrc+
* IF Beltre (21): 88pa, 13.6b%, 13.6k%, .365bip, .307avg, .067iso, 133wrc+
* C Duran (21): 75pa, 13.3b%, 22.7k%, .295bip, .242avg, .129iso, 115wrc+
* IF Toman (21): 71pa, 11.3b%, 19.7k%, .283bip, .220avg, .068iso, 91wrc+
* OF Aponte (21): 69pa, 8.7b%, 29.0k%, .282bip, .200avg, .133iso, 89wrc+

Huge start from Munoz but i have no idea if that power is at all real or not. Good line from Beltre too. Duran is actually very interesting to me here as he's apparently a legit defensive C and it's a solid line again to start this year. Not much to say about the other two there tho.

So the actual standout starts so far imo:

* 1. Nimmala
* 2. Clase
* 3. Arias
* 4. Pinango
* 5. Munoz

First home game for the C's that we attended this year. Probably the most interesting game we have ever witnessed.
Nigel - Thursday, May 01 2025 @ 05:05 PM EDT (#459521) #
By this time every year I would normally be pretty invested in the Jays' minor league seasons. I have to admit I'm thankful for the Box's minor league write ups because its been weeks since I've even looked at a box score from NH or Dun. I think only Nimmala, Jimenez and Arias are actual position player prospects in the system so there isn't much call to check the box scores. Thanks to all for these write ups:)
