Mark Hendrickson has dodged the bullet and remains in the rotation. As long as he's careful with Sweeney, I think Lurch can do well again tonight. He's been excellent in three of his last four starts. Very few Royals have ever seen him, and the same applies for most of the Jays and 23-year-old lefty Chris George.

Carlos Tosca told Jerry Howarth on the radio pregame show that Eric Hinske's wrist is feeling better, and Dave Berg has a stiff neck, which explains why he hasn't been used much lately. Once again, the skipper bats Bordick second; Mike's playing third while Hinske enjoys another night off. Catalanotto makes a rare start against a lefty, because he's 4-for-6 off George.

Pretty play to his right by Woodward, who deliberately bounced the throw, and Delgado made a great scoop to retire Beltran. Scoreless after one, and both pitchers look sharp.

Love the title, Coach. Would you care to debate whether the babel fish proves the NON-existence of God?
Coach - Friday, May 16 2003 @ 08:30 PM EDT (#102077) #
If there really was a babel fish, we could have understood Casey Stengel. Hudson singled up the middle to cash in Wilson; 1-0 Jays.

After two innings, Hendrickson has faced the minimum thanks to a 4-6-3, and has thrown just 17 pitches. Stewart led off the third with a solid single off George, who had thrown 48 already. It's unlikely the kid will last six, the way the Jays are taking him deep into counts. Bordick walked, and Wells is up in a "clutch" situation. V-Dub swung through a beautiful changeup, then ripped a low liner right through Randa's legs, and it's 2-0.

That was a weird play! Delgado bounced a shot up the middle, off the pitcher toward first base. Carlos did a hook slide into the bag, but Sweeney dove for the 1-3 putout. While all that was going on, Bordick scored the third run. Wilson just hit an RBI sac fly to make it 4-zip.

Hendrickson didn't walk a man until there were two out in the fifth, and his pitch count is just 67. Tosca has given him a quick hook the last couple of starts to get Escobar some work, but tonight Mark should be allowed to work until he says he's tired.

Line of the night: Buehrle 3.1 11 8 2 0

The fifth Toronto run came on singles by Stewart and Bordick, and a wild pitch with Wells up. George is done after 103 pitches through five. Rookie Jason Gilfillan was greeted by two singles and a bad call by the first base ump that gave Stewart an infield hit. Unbelievably, the rookie wild-pitches in two more runs, then Wells hits a bomb and it's 9-0.

There's no better time to have a brain cramp than with a nine-run lead, but it was another embarrassing moment for Mr. Hudson, as he backed off an infield fly that is officially scored a hit. Why? Because you can't give the E-4 when he didn't touch it, and there's no E-10.

O-Dog, overhustling to compensate, proceeded to run over Bordick as both called a high popup in front of the mound. It was Hendrickson's best pitch yet to Sweeney. Four hits and a walk in six innings -- Tanyon Sturtze, eat your heart out -- and 85 pitches; I'd give Lurch the seventh.

Mike DiFelice is having a nighmare game. 5 wild pitches, all in the dirt, all preventable. He's a weak hitting back-up catcher - I think I would cut him based on this game alone.
Coach - Friday, May 16 2003 @ 10:50 PM EDT (#102083) #
The K.C. crowd let DiFelice hear it when he finally did block a pitch. Reed Johnson, pinch-hitting for Stewart, doubled and came around to score on another Wells RBI, his fourth of the night -- it's now sixteen to one.

Faulds announced that tonight's 18-1 triumph is the largest margin of victory in Blue Jays HISTORY!
Craig B - Friday, May 16 2003 @ 11:22 PM EDT (#102085) #
Well, that was an unadulterated pleasure. Largest margin of victory in Blue Jays history.

DiFelice may have just played himself out of the league, but he's hitting 273/300/500 so a few hits will probably save him.

Bert Blyleven on the Twins broadcast (they also scored 18 today, against the White Sox) said that he was very glad that the Twins are done with the Jays already. The offense is rolling, this was a great opener, and we'll undoubtedly lose 2-1 tomorrow because that's how these things go.

Bordick didn't look too happy with Hudson bumping into him in the sixth, but a great replay showed that Bordick wasn't talking it up like he should have.

Also from the minors: Vince Perkins is on his way to Dunedin! New Haven bashed around AA pitching again (Alexis Rios is still batting .400 with a 1.118 OPS). But the line of the night was in Charleston, where Sandy Nin and Adam Peterson (5 IP and 4 IP, respectively) fired a three-hit shutout of Augusta, walking 1 and striking out 16. A great night for the organization all round. Happy long weekend, all.
