The abbreviated four-day "week" resulted in some lopsided scores and significant movement in the standings. Baird Brain (pounded 11-1 by the Horse Field Hammers to drop from third all the way to ninth in the standings) and Billie's Bashers (stomped 12-0 by the Gashouse Gorillas to fall from seventh to eleventh spot) were hardest hit, as the minimum 25 IP rule added insult to injury. When the innings requirement isn't met, I understand the automatic loss in the rate stat categories, but how can Yahoo justify wiping out a counting stat like saves?

Two other contenders were trounced; an 11-1 loss to the Austin Senators knocked the Moscow Rats from fourth down to tenth. Second-place AGF lost 9-3 to the Red Mosquitos, while my Toronto Walrus squeaked out a 6-5 decision over the Chatsworth Halos, extending our lead to 7.5 games. Mebion Glyndwr, by virtue of a 7-5 decision over the Eastern Shore Birds, moves into third, with seven teams now bunched within six games from fourth to tenth.

Only seven weeks remain in the regular season, so it's crunch time.

I wish I could give some of my luck in this league to the Blue Jays. Incredibly, my team survived a 4-for-39 nightmare at the plate on Sunday to win OBP, while Curt Schilling, all by himself, clinched four pitching categories and blanked another. With the option of starting Jose Lima and Carlos Silva on the road in later Sunday games, I feared blowing the lead in WHIP and ERA in pursuit of a W, and benched them both. As it turns out, I would have won 7-5, but the risk of losing 7-4 wasn't worth it. I try not to second-guess managerial decisions, even my own, because I've learned that even in fantasy ball, and especially in a real dugout, there are no absolute rights and wrongs. After weighing all the possibilities and considering your personnel, you ultimately have to trust your experience and instincts.

I have tremendous respect for my next opponent, R Billie, but if there's ever been a good week to face the Bashers, this may be it — one of his aces (Mussina) is on the DL and the other (Prior) questionable. So I'm cautiously optimistic about our matchup, and confident of maintaining the lead for a 15th straight week. At this point, the Walrus is counting down and hoping to avoid blowouts. The regular season title would be nice, but I'll be quite content with a first-round bye, and a chance to see if my, uh, stuff works in the playoffs.

The short week was not kind to Ghost Man on Third who not only lost, but had first place wrestled away by a surging Slippery Pete.

The Pistol Nine couldn't hold a late lead and lost 6-5-1 to HOMER JAYS Simpsons. This week the Nine get a crack at the frontrunners. I'm feeling good as it looks like Josh Fogg will get 2 starts....

Barfield only had a 7 IP minimum? It was supposed to have a 25 IP like the other leagues. Man, I really wish I had known about that, or else I would have changed it. Sorry guys. :(

I am a commisioner in another Yahoo league, and I just checked: IP minimum is still a valid category to change - so at the very least we can correct the problem in future weeks (though with 7 as opposed to 4 days, the chances of the IP minimum being necessary are very slim). The question is - would it automatically correct the standings for previous weeks by applying that change now?

The Elitists got a bit of a scare this week from last place Ben's Men, but came back to record a mediocre 7-4 victory. Ben will be a tough competitor next year, but Pujols and ARod can only do so much. I would've got smoked by a better team this week (no offense Ben).

Bonds Jayson Werth, come on down. In a short week, a 4 for 5 game holds up well in your numbers. Jayson had 4 runs, drove in 3, stole a base, going .429/.471/.857. Jermaine Dye a close 2nd.

Neifi Omar Infante - 2/16, 1 run, 0 rbi, 0 sb, .125/.176/.125, not the sign of a leadoff hitter who will stay in that spot for long with numbers like that.

Pedro Ricardo Rodriguez - who? Amongst my staff, I never would have guessed that a July free agent acquisition would end up in this spot. Ricardo got the pitching staff's only win this week in 6.1 IP, with a line of 0.00/1.58/1.00. Decent compared to...

Limas Javier Vazquez, Orlando Hernandez, Mark Redman - ERAs of 16.62, 14.54, 6.43, blah. Looks like a few will get 2 starts this week so hopefully better results.

This week the Elitists face top tier Good Sports where pitching performances will be key to any success. What a great time to face a team with Justin Morneau.

Oh, I forgot to mention, since we in Barfield are having such a great time kicking the crap out of each other, there was a question of why limit it just to baseball? With that in mind a BBFL football league has been created for anyone interest in joining. Maybe something to keep you busy over the fall once baseball dies down. Anyhow, it's certainly open to everyone in Alomar or anyone else for that matter. Rules, draft time/date are all up for debate, sign up if you're interested.

At Yahoo, league id: 83222, password: coach.

This hasn't been sanctioned by anyone at BB to my knowledge, but hopefully it gets their blessing.

Though cheapened by the short week, I'll take my 12-0 sweep and enjoy my first taste of the playoff tier for the season. I haven't named awards for the past few weeks, thus I have not had to deal with the dreaded "post-award jinx." I will continue this feeble attempt at currying favor with Lady Luck as I go head-to-head with my co-fourth place foe, Spicol's Red Mosquitos. And what a handsome lot they are, with enough good hitting and pitching to field two teams, at the least. ;)

Just a reminder, the trading deadline is August 15th this year.
_R Billie - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:16 PM EDT (#51077) #
Well how ridiculous. It was a three or four day week and two of my starters are hurt and one got sent down and the other keeps getting badly creamed after starting out the year well. I don't think I even broke 10 innings.

I can understand Yahoo wiping out rate stats because those should be compared against sample size, but what do saves have to do with that?

Anyway, I was up against a team that had several Texas Rangers beating up on the Blue Jays. I think Teixeira must have had 5 homeruns and 25 rbi by himself.

I've been destroyed the last two weeks but Ordonez is back and I'm trying to shuffle pitching a little bit.

If anyone is interested in trading, I have two useful offensive players in Mike Lamb who is 3B eligible and Ruben Sierra. Both are part time players but may be of use to someone looking to fill a utility slot or upgrade an unproductive corner infield or outfield slot.

All I'm looking for in exchange is healthy starting pitching who can give me innings, not so much concerned about the quality. So if you have extra starters on your bench and need some utility depth then drop me a line.

Another week, another pathetic offensive performance from the Good Sports. An 8-4 victory was actually a little disappointing, as we comfortably won our eight categories, while losing OBP and AVG by .003. We also managed to gain ground on first place, while losing ground on second place. Although it would be nice to have the league's best record, second place is what I'm really aiming for; that carries with it a first round bye and, therefore, automatic promotion to Alomar.

Bonds: A tough, but unimpressive, three way race here - Charles Thomas had the rate stats, Scott Podsednik contributed in the the two offenisve categories I won, but Lew Ford did the same as Scott while cracking a couple of homeruns for good measure.
Leaders: Clayton 3, Ford 2, Bellhorn 2, Belliard 2, Podsednik 2, Piazza 1, Johnson 1, Payton 1, Sanchez 1

Hawpe: Ugh. It's so hard to pick just one. I'm tempted to just give the award to the whole team collectively, but I'll limit myself to three. Jay Payton, Mike Piazza, and Royce Clayton, step right up.
Leaders: Scutaro 3, Clayton 2.333, Hawpe 2, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 2, Piazza 1.333, Payton 1.333, Segui 1, Franco 1, Daubach 1

Schmidt: *Yawn* Jason Schmidt.
Leaders: Schmidt 7, Clemens 3.5, Kolb 1.5, Frasor 1, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Wilson 0.5, Urbina 0.5

Ligtenberg: For the second straight heartbreaking week, Roy Halladay.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Clemens 2, Urbina 2, Halladay 2, Wilson 1, Field 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Frasor 1
