Last night was a rough one, but I'm betting that the Jays had a little bit of the "everyone's watching on TV" yips. This afternoon's game against the defending World Series champs isn't on television, so we can use it to put my theory to the test.

bluejays.com lists a "home" radio broadcast for the Jays but it is identified only as TOR, so I'm guessing it's not on the radio, just online. I'd gladly be wrong, though.

kpataky - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 01:17 PM EST (#105697) #
Bottom 1st: Anastacio Martinez pitching. Johnson looks at a ball outside. In for a strike. Pops one out of play off the left side. Strike taken on the inside corner to whiff.

Berg, batting 9th, popped out to Hinske near the mound. Hinske was struggling with the high sky and Myers never saw it and the ball lands on the ground between the mound and the plate. Berg gets a base hit.

Does Halladay usually take a while to get going in the Spring? Maybe it will take him a little longer this time around because he changed his off-season workout.

Vazquez watches the count quickly go 0-2. Hit on the ground to first, Hinske flips to Halladay covering to end the inning. Middle of the 2nd, 3-0 Red Sox.

Bad plays like Shea the Jay yesterday in the field, and pitchers getting roughed up doesnt bother me in the spring. They are experimenting with things, pitches...although certain bonehead moves never shold be excused. If I do remember though, yes Halladay has had some rough spring outings.

Bottom 2nd: Hillenbrand takes a strike. Outside spins to the backstop. Count evens 1-1. Fouled off on the right hand side. Fouled off, still 1-2. Breaking ball over but low, 2-2. Hit to left high and deep. The ball catches the wall for a stand up double. Wind Aided Double.

Menechino takes a fastball for a strike. Inside, 1-1. Low for a ball, 2-1. Hit on the ground, knocked down by Vazquez who has no play. Hillenbrand scores on the infield hit. Red Sox 3, Jays 1. (and the MLB.com signal goes out!)
kpataky - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 01:46 PM EST (#105721) #
It seems like someone on the announcing team knocked the plug out of the wall. Some screeching and a thud followed by the sound of a telephone that was left off the hook, and then silence.....still there is silence. I'm switching to the Yankees Tigers game cause it doesn't look like this is coming back.

Oh my god. Gross is upstoppable. I'm going to try and figure out how the clogs in JPs head are running.

Gross may still start the season in Syracuse and soon he'll come up again, likely 2 months. In that time, he can trade one of Hinkske, Hillenbrand or Cat and bring in a solid #3 or good #2 starting pitcher. That pitcher would displace either Towers or Chacin.
Marc Hulet - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 01:54 PM EST (#105731) #
I believe it was a two-run shot, but I got the info from the Yahoo boxscore.
kpataky - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 01:56 PM EST (#105732) #
I don't think you are going to find a sold #2 or #3 starter for Cat, Hilldenbrand or Hinske. Maybe all 3. Hey - back online is MLB.com. Halladay gets the hook and Speier is in!
BCMike - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 01:56 PM EST (#105733) #

Spartan - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 02:04 PM EST (#105744) #
Okay, well maybe they would have include a high prospect to get a pitcher, which I don't think they should do.

Well maybe JP can make room for Gross with a trade and still get a good piece back. I am however hoping that both Towers and Chacin are able to hold their own in the rotation. It is pretty clear what Towers will give us, but I hope that Chacin will open a lot of eyes.
Sherrystar - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 02:04 PM EST (#105745) #
Well, I just hope Gross doesn't get de-motivated when sent down. If he keeps it up, his future is in left field at Skydo... I mean rogers centre.

And I agree with Pistol, not much we could get for either of them... unless they all hot .320 and have 20 home runs...
kpataky - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 02:04 PM EST (#105746) #
Hinske fouls one off to even the count at 2. Hinske swings through a high heater to whiff.

Hillenbrand looks at a pair out of the strike zone as the count goes to 2-0. Next pitch splits the plate in half, Hilly watches. Grounder to 3rd, Youkilis can't handle it and the ball ends up in left field for an error.

nicton, with respect to getting a #2 or #3... wouldn't A.J. Burnett be a #2? I think we'll take a run at him before June 30th as he's a FA and has already stated he'd think about coming here... don't know what it would take though...
Spartan - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 02:18 PM EST (#105757) #
I don't have any examples, I wasn't thinking that far. But I know there was talk about getting Vazquez earlier and I was pretty excited about that. And maybe we could get Burnett at the trade deadline?

And maybe we could get Burnett at the trade deadline?

That would be great, but I doubt it. The Marlins figure to be a serious playoff contender this year. They have a potent batting lineup. Their weakness is probably pitching. I doubt they'd move Burnett unless they get a similar pitcher in return (Lilly).

mistermike, would you do lilly for burnett?

it sounds interesting...

I'd probably stick with Lilly because he's got a year left on his contract. Unless Burnett were the agree to a three year deal with the Jays as part of it. Then I'd consider it.

All highly unlikely however. Mere speculation at this point. Just saying that I doubt the Marlins would move a solid starting pitcher unless they got another in return. They're more likely to move a bat for a pitcher.

Runs up to bunt a beauty up the third base line that eventually squirted over the chalk line and went foul. Inside for a ball evening the count at 2. Stike 3 called on the inside corner, knee high.

2nd hit of the day for MacDonald? Maybe he can give a bit of offence along with that glove of his. Losing a marginal prospect that would've just further clogged the minors doesn't seem so bad now.

Spartan, McDonald has 4 homers in 6 years in the majors. I don't think you ought to be getting too excited about his offense. If he could hit he would have got more than 300 AB in 6 years.

Repeat after me: It is only spring training

On the other hand he is a good pick up defensively. I think Adams is going to show us a lot of what we saw yesterday, great range and hands but lousy throws. He will be lucky to stay under 30 errors. McDonald will be some welcome stability late in ballgames.

The Jays cut three of their young arms last night (Thursday): Dustin McGowan was optioned to Syracuse (Triple-A), while David Purcey and Zach Jackson were re-assigned to minor-league camp.

Since he's on the Red Sox, I think it is not only understandable, but mandatory, that Ian's name be spelled "Bladdergroin" on this site (at least until he's traded out of the division).

Dustin McGowan was optioned to Syracuse

Unless the Jays have some funny ideas, McGowan will not pitch for Syracuse in April. The Jays optioned McGowan to AAA like this in 2004, and he went to New Hampshire to start the year.

Why did they option McGowan to Syracuse (this year and last year) when they have no intention of playing him there? Couldn't they option him to New Hampshire or Dunedin?

So, does it appear whether or not Myers will be healthy enough to start the season with the big club, or will he start in the minors?

I know a lot of us would rather GQ get some seasoning at AAA, but I recall hearing that he may be pressed into action at the start of the season in the bigs.

Dan Reichert has shown up in Seattle, as a non-roster invite. The M's blogs are fairly high on him (although Aaron Sele is an alternative, and that may colour their opinions).

And I read in the Star that Myers isn't going to be ready for the start of the season, so Zaun and Quiroz will be starting in the majors.

Does anyone know exactly how many pitchers JP plans on carrying? I seem to recall him saying 12. So assuming (for now of course) that he did say 12, which 12 guys get the nod?

The Starters (Locks): (5)
Doc, Lilly, Bush, Chacin, Towers

Bullpen (Locks): (5)
Batista, Speier, Schoenweis, Ligtenberg, Frasor

That leaves you with 10, and 2 bullpen slots left. The 3 guys that are "in contention" appear to be League, Chulk, and Koch. It appears, from what JP has said, that League will start the season with the big club as a reliever. If that's true, then you have 11. So then it comes down to Chulk and Koch for the 12th slot.

Any thoughts on who whould get the job? Chulk or Koch...
Braby21 - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:07 PM EST (#105847) #
How is Myers not ready for the season? Yet he's catching in Spring Training games?

I'd like to think Chulk would get the nod before Koch, considering Chulk has pitched well, and Koch...well he's pitched.
Gardiner West - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:13 PM EST (#105848) #
I'm hoping that in games that they are winning, Speier is the first man out of the pen when the starter tires and an uprising needs to be quelled. Schoeneweis to get the left-handed pinch hitter. Frasor in the 8th. Batista in the 9th. Hopefully, League will take over from Frasor and become the apprentice, a closer in waiting much like the Yankees did with Wetteland and Rivera. I was hoping that Koch would rediscover his fastball, but as the 92 MPH reading on the YES bug on Thursday night revealed, Billy the Kid has no bullets left in his gun.
BCMike - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:14 PM EST (#105849) #
From all reports Koch has not looked good, although he didn't exactly get hit hard yesterday. Haven't heard much about Chulk. I think Miller and Glynn might also be in the mix.
BCMike - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:16 PM EST (#105850) #

I was hoping that Koch would rediscover his fastball, but as the 92 MPH reading on the YES bug on Thursday night revealed, Billy the Kid has no bullets left in his gun.

For what it's worth, I believe League was also hitting around 92.

Flex - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:18 PM EST (#105851) #
In the Globe today Blair quoted Ricciardi as saying (in the context of talking about the bullpen) that he wouldn't hesitate to eat a guaranteed contract if necessary and indicated it would be tough for Koch to stick. I wouldn't be surprised if Ligtenberg was released outright, or at the very least put on the DL to start the year, if he can't get himself right.
DaveInNYC - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:25 PM EST (#105853) #
Well then Kerry really helped himself out with his fine outing today.
Braby21 - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:28 PM EST (#105855) #
``I was looking forward to being the closer,'' Speier said, ``but I believe that Gibby knows what is good for the team. It has nothing to do with what I want, I am a team player and the team comes first.''

Sounds like Speier is disappointed, but not frustrated. Which is natural, I don't think this is something that will effect the team in a bad way at all.
jim854 - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:30 PM EST (#105856) #
I think Koch & Littenburg (sp) are on the bubble to make this team. 'K' will likely be released if his performance does not improve greatly, & 'L' may end up on a medical leave if his hip & performance does not improve.

Otherwise, the Jays today played a very good game with good relief pitching & timely hitting.
PeterG - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:34 PM EST (#105858) #
I think that Miller is more than in the bullpen mix. He is close to a lock unless he is involved in a deal. He is out of options and they would keep him over Chulk who has a remaining option. Miller should have a spot unless he pitches himself out of it. He had an outstanding inning agaibst the Yanks. I don't think Koch makes it and Kerry is on thin ice but a decent spring may allow him to hold on for now.His fate may depend on whether ot not they decide to keep League with the big team.
sweat - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 05:37 PM EST (#105859) #
You have to hand it to Speier, as he has handled the situation as best as can be. I also agree with the post earlier, that said Speier should be the stopper. Bring him in when there is a tough situation, that needs to be stopped.
Flex - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 06:03 PM EST (#105861) #
To refer to the Blair article again, it included Chulk in a group of pitchers (Frasor and League the others) who had to pitch their way off the club.

Also referred to Downs or Walker as being possible for the swing spot. No mention of Miller. But Blair doesn't necessarily know everything.
Pistol - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 06:57 PM EST (#105865) #
In the Globe today Blair quoted Ricciardi as saying (in the context of talking about the bullpen) that he wouldn't hesitate to eat a guaranteed contract if necessary

That's good to hear, but after the insistence on keeping Berg on the club last year seeing is believing for me.

Here's an interesting article from Jayson Stark titled
Parity reigns.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2010302

We need a balanced schedule that gives us a chance to play the other teams more, something that's more fair," says Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi. "Right now, we have to play those two teams 38 times. Because of that, our kids are not afraid to go play in Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. And that's good. We just wish we didn't have to go as much."

Even though Stark presents some pretty good evidence of parity, I still think the current CBA is a joke. When they were discussing the luxury tax a few years ago I thought it would be something like a dollar for dollar tax at a 75 mil threshold.

The Jays at a 50-53 mil payroll have virtually no hope of topping the Yanks or the Red Sox over the course of a 162 game schedule. No sport has a big of a gap of payrolls (Yanks and D-Rays) between the top and bottom team.

I remember reading comments from the Pirates owner saying he's going to be more vocal about the next CBA. I wonder if any of the owners will push for a hard or soft cap.

Guys I'm keen to watch this year: League, Gross, Rios
Guys I'm a mite concerned about: Ligtenberg, Koch, Hinske

I just can't erase the memory of all those Hinske strikeouts, popups, and groundouts (followed by cursing and bat-slamming, which, frankly is painful to watch).

And Ligtenberg implosions.

And Koch grooved fastballs.

In response to the recent post, here is a list of names of ex Jays coaching this year...

Sorry to nit pick, but are we forgetting the great Alfredo Griffin, first base coach for the Anaheim Angels?

Pepper Moffatt - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 10:37 PM EST (#105871) #
The Jays at a 50-53 mil payroll have virtually no hope of topping the Yanks or the Red Sox over the course of a 162 game schedule.

The Jays have virtually no hope of making the playoffs in any division, except maybe the AL Central.

The Jays problem is simply that they're not a very good ballclub. Until last year the Red Sox had always been a slightly above average team who had a good record because they got to play 53 games a year against below-average Oriole, Devil Ray, and Blue Jays team. Most years there were at least 3 teams in the AL West who as good if not better than the Red Sox.

While baseball still has a Yankees problem, it's a pretty balanced sport right now. There are at least 15 teams at the start of the year that have a legitimate shot at winning it all, which isn't really any different than any other sport.

Craig B - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 11:02 PM EST (#105872) #
We know for certain that the Jays were not one of the seven largest revenue sharing recipients in 2003, and that they received less than San Diego, who pocketed $13.3 million US. As for 2004, I don't think those numbers are finalized yet.

According to Rogers Communications' quarterly financial statements, it seems that revenue sharing payments are received throughout the year. For each of the last two quarters (the first two in which the Blue Jays were treated on a consolidated basis with RCI), you see a statement like this:

During the three months ended December 31, 2004, the Blue Jays generated revenue of $19.8 million primarily related to baseball revenue, which comprises home game and concession revenue, and revenue generated from Major League Baseball’s revenue sharing agreement whereby funds are distributed to and from clubs based on the clubs’ respective revenues.

So clearly they're receiving payments throughout the year. What we don't know, is how the revenue sharing payments track - but according to the CBA, teams actually make estimates throughout the year, and quarterly payments are made on that basis (and there's penalties for misrepresenting your estimates). They do a square-up for the year's results on December 1, and then the following year, in March, everyone's audited financials are due and they make a final adjustment. So what we do know is that no one will have their 2004 financials ready to do final 2004 revenue sharing calculations for a little while yet (probably). Last year, the full-year revenue sharing numbers were leaked in May - we'll hope for the same this year, and hope that the Toronto numbers get leaked this time too!

Just to make everything clear, teams share a pool of 34% of each team's local revenue, which is then split evenly among all the teams. There are accountants in place to make sure that each team doesn't hide revenue, but it doesn't appear to work very well, and some insiders come straight out and admit that that's the case. In some cases, the amount of "hidden" revenue is small, and in others it appears to be quite sizable, though I don't know of any cases where it seems to be getting worse.

This is distinct from the luxury tax, which doesn't get distributed to teams, but gets spent by MLB on other purposes.

There's also a currency equalization payment the Jays once got, but I don't know if they'll even get that this/last year. If I remember correctly, this was paid out of the Commissioner's Discretionary Fund, which is a kitty, or slush fund, of $10 million a year of revenue sharing money. It's put under Bud Selig's control that he can spend on basically whoever he thinks needs a cash infusion (teams have to make a request).

I find it odd that 4 out of the first 8 games vs. the Red Sox aren't going to be on local tv.

I remember last season with the exception of one game, everygame vs. the Yanks and Red Sox was televised by TSN or SN.
