The White Sox have won six in a row. As the immortal (because he never really existed) Jean-Luc Picard once said, "The line must be drawn here!"

This is the penultimate, the second-last Game Thread As We Have Known It - we got the chat room up for last night's game, and it was so cool and so fast that it almost distracted me form the ball game itself. Never hit refresh again! Wow, is that cool.

It's going today, of course. The BattersBox Game Thread Chat Room is located on irc.freenode.net , channel #battersbox. And of course, the easiest way to get to there is to use Batter's Box's own Java applet, which will automatically use your Batter's Box account name, if you have one and you're logged in. Not that that's necessary.

Lineups? Do we have lineups? Of course. The Jays have shaken things up:

Podsednik, lf Hudson, 2b
Iguchi, 2b Catalanotto, lf
Everett, dh Koskie, dh
Konerko, 1b Hillenbrand, 3b
Rowand, cf Hinske, 1b
Dye, rf Zaun, c
Uribe, ss Wells, cf
Widger, c Rios, rf
Crede, 3b Adams, ss
Garland, p Lilly, p
Taking the pressure off V-Dub? Or just getting his first pitch outs out of the way?

Wells is dropped to seventh today. Interesting.

Matt Bonner of the Raptors threw out the first pitch. Doesn't look that much bigger than Doc, actually.

I'll be staying away from the Chat this afternoon - not sure it'll work on this 1989 state-of-the-art laptop anyway.

From today's Game Notes: Hillenbrand's .390 April was the third best start in team history (Olerud hit. 450 in April 1993, and Damaso Garcia hit .394 in April 1984.)

The White Sox have matched the 1919 club for the second-best start in franchise history. (There's good omen!) The last Sox pitcher prior to today's starter Jon Garland to throw back-to-back shutouts was Black Jack McDowell. The Sox are 18-4 against the AL Central... They have allowed 21 HRs in 22 games tied with Oakland for lowest in the AL after leading the majors in homers allowed last year

Not a great start for us. Let's just hope we can turn this into a slugfest...
Magpie - Saturday, May 07 2005 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#115990) #
Lilly got 9 swings and misses in his 1.2 IP - exactly the same number Doc got in 9 innings at Yankee Stadium.

Otherwise, not much in commomn.

They didn't have much choice with Wells. There's no reason he won't rebound but he needs something to get his mind refocused and just get back to seeing the ball and hitting it where it's pitched.

Once again I thought Gibbons was a bit slow to remove a struggling pitcher. Whiteside barely escaped the third inning on a lineout to right field with two in scoring position and he did nothing but struggle the entire 4th inning and eventually stayed in for two homeruns and 4 runs which currently make up the majority of the margin for the Sox. It was only a 6-2 game at that point.

Which brings us back to why Whiteside is on this team. Gibbons doesn't have enough confidence in him to use him for two and a half weeks and Whiteside doesn't have enough endurance it seems to last beyond one inning.

Now Adams homers and the Jays trail by exactly the runs that Whiteside cost them.

Archiving a bit of late-game chat:

<StephenT> Anyone know why Bush was taken out at 79 pitches last night?
<StellersJay> He was gassed he worked out of the stretch all night
<StephenT> Ah, thanks.
...
<StephenT> Next question: what happened to the batter's box at Rogers Centre last night?
<VoteZaun> I'm still not sure what the deal was with that
<VoteZaun> The roof was open for the first time, if that means anything
<Lefty> Sweedens up 4-3
<Original_Ryan> On the pregame, Gibbons thought that the dirt around the plate dried out due to the roof.
<StephenT> I heard the pregame, but I don't get that explanation. They had a roof other years.
<StephenT> Also, I thought they mentioned puddles last night, but I didn't catch the details.
<VoteZaun> Is the home plate dirt different this year than other years?
...
<StephenT> I've heard the warning tracks are different, but I don't know about the dirt.
<PaulS> the warning tracks are spongy
...
<Alex_from_the_uk> the chances of the Jays getting 5 in the bottom of the 9th?
<StellersJay> the same as Zaun going to the all-star game. No offence Rob
...
<StephenT> Alex, I think teams score 4 or more runs in something like 2-3% of innings.
...

Basically, we still don't know what happened to the batter's box dirt last night.

My theory is they've done a lot of grooming and rolling to get the turf packed down and it's really packed down the clay and dirt around home plate as well. That's why choppers bounce so high off that area and maybe that's why the ground wasn't loose enough to get a firm grip with plastic spikes.

Here's the difference between two struggling Blue Jays.

First, Ted Lilly:

"It's unacceptable, from my perspective... I'm definitely going to have to make some changes -- there's no question. I can't assume that everything's going to fall into place without doing anything about it.

Next, Vernon Wells:

"I just got to continue to work and sooner or later hits will start falling in."

One man is taking responsibility for his performance and accepts the need to make changes, the other plans to keep doing the same old thing and wait for things to start going his way.

When I took a tour of the Rogers Centre two weeks ago they said they only open the roof if it gets to 75 degrees F out. Was it that warm up there today? It was 45 here in CT!

Vernon Wells: "I just got to continue to work and sooner or later hits will start falling in."

You've gotta give him some credit though. If Delgado had ever been moved down to seventh in the batting order during a slump, he'd be pissing and moaning and complaining in public like there was no tomorrow. I, for one, like Wells' attitude and his team-centred approach.

What makes you say that?

I don't give a large amount of merit into what players say to the press, especially the press in Toronto from what we know of them. We all know how Vernon talks to the media. He's a pretty fairweather guy who doesn't do alot of talking. There's something wrong, clearly. Vernon knows that, no question. He's not going to go out and do the same thing with the same result.

I refuse to jump on the "let's make drastic changes after a month of April" wagon (Not to imply that anyone here is, but people are elsewhere). If Vernon goes 12 for 20 in the next five games I won't jump on the "Let's name a Church after Vernon" wagon either. I will tell you that in a month, this will be a distant memory.

I take exception to the "pissing and moaning" comment too.

When did Delgado ever piss and moan, about anything?

When did Delgado ever piss and moan, about anything?

Some examples:

Playing DH when David Segui was acquired. He made it very clear in public that he would not DH (even though one of the best defensive first basemen came to town).

Back in 2002, Josh Phelps started one game at 1B, an interleague road game, with Delgado one the bench. Delgado complained bitterly to the press after the game about not playing.

I also vaguely recall him getting upset when one manager talked about moving him to third or fifth in the batting order. I think it was during the Fregosi "era".

Back in 2002, Josh Phelps started one game at 1B, an interleague road game

Couldn't have been 2002. The interleague games were over when Phelps was called up. But it might not have been Phelps: Delgado started 140 games at 1B and 3 at DH that year. He DH'ed a little more in 2003 and 2004, and Phelps picked up most of the first base starts when he did.

Segui only played 4 games at 1B for the Jays in 1999, all of them in his first 10 days with the team. He then picked up an injury that wouldn't allow him to play in the field.

You're certainly right that Delgado preferred playing the field to playing DH. Everybody does. I think it's a big reason he's in the NL now. And I certainly think Fregosi would have chosen to accomodate the player who was going to be with the team the following season, if it ever did come down to brass tacks. But I don't recall Delgado actually making a George Bell-type stink about it.

Further research: Delgado never was "benched" for Phelps. He was never benched for anybody, at least not during his final seven years in Toronto.

The one time Phelps started at 1B with Delgado on the bench but not on the DL was April 24, 2003 at Tampa Bay. The night before, Delgado had collided with Easley while running the bases, taken a knee to the eye, and been forced to leave the game. Remember the shiner? It lasted a month. He was expected to miss several games.

Delgado missed 19 games in August 2002 with a back problem that put him on the DL. Tom Wilson got most of the first base work in his absence.

Delgado played every game in 2000 and 2001. He missed the final 10 games of 1999 after cracking a bone in his leg.

He missed the first 20 games of 1998 with a winter ball injury, that prompted the team to add Jose Canseco to the lineup. Mike Stanley filled in at first base.

So I reckon the last time a healthy Delgado sat out a Toronto game was 1997, when Cito Gaston and Joe Carter were still around.
