The specter of whether or not Babe Didrikson Zaharias should win a spot on the recent All-Babe team raised another interesting question ... what kind of Hall of Names team could be gathered using only the 74 men to have reached the MLB level whose last/family name begins with the letter "Z"?

Now, just off the top of your head, you're probably thinking "Zito, Zeile, Canada's own Zimmerman boys, former Jay Zosky ..." And you'd be right. But putting together the full 25-man roster is a little harder than you might think.

Well, let's, um, zee ..

Meet your ZANESVILLE GRAYS
NOTE: Yes, this was actually a real minor league team, not just some literary pun from an underappreciated English major.

How can you forget Victor Zambrano!!

Well, I didn't actually *forget* him, I just didn't think he was good enough to make the team ... but as I look at this roster, I think we only have 23, including eight pitchers, which should go to 25 and 10. So maybe V. Zambrano joins Carlos in the rotation or can be the long man out of the 'pen.

Well, Caramon, I went to the videotape, expanded the pitching staff to 10 (and the roster to its full 25) and I'm afraid V. Zambrano still didn't make the team ... another guy the Mets acquired in a lopsided trade for the other team, Pat Zachry, grabbed the fifth starter's role. He did make an All-Star team, after all!

Er, rather, the long relief spot. You'd think I'd pay closer attention to my own decisions!

Oh shucks, you'd think the former Ace of the Devil Rays staff would count for something ;)

You'd think being traded for Scott Kazmir would count for something.

Zachry was traded for Tom Seaver. He wins on that count.
