Here it is, the season's final photo of the day. For the winter it'll revert back to once a week.

Ernie and the troops on the mound await a certain inspiring bullpen guy:

A small personal plug: I have two photographic exhibitions, one that's already open and another that opens today:

Photographs of Prague are currently up at the Ten Restaurant and Wine Bar in Port Credit, and my Trinidad & Tobago show will be at Burke's Bookstore in Toronto as part of the St. Clair Artwalk, starting Friday. Click on either for more details and a photograph from each.

Thanks for the great photos throughout the year, NFH. You do excellent work, and I always look forward to seeing the day's photo.

I'm listening to the FAN and a guy has just called in saying that Ricciardi should be fired.
VBF - Friday, September 30 2005 @ 02:12 PM EDT (#129292) #
And his basis was?
Matthew E - Friday, September 30 2005 @ 02:26 PM EDT (#129295) #
Oh, the usual. Not enough wins and stuff.

The odd thing was that Swirsky's topic was his idea that teams like the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys and Canadiens should make it into the playoffs every year automatically, because that's what the fans ought to see. So this guy calls up and starts saying how there ought to be a salary cap for MLB because the Jays have no chance, and also Ricciardi ought to be fired because he hasn't won in four years. How he believes both of those things at once is not clear to me.
VBF - Friday, September 30 2005 @ 02:33 PM EDT (#129296) #
Swirsky's argument is garbage though. Fans don't want to see a 100 loss Yankees, they want to see a 100 win blue Jays. Typical Swirsky, and its pathetic.

Funny story about Swirsky. I always thought he was a big macho guy with the way he talks and how he preaches everyone his ignorant opinion. But he's a small, slimy greaseball, and the very fact that he can have a job in Canada truly baffles me.

And I re-iterate Justin's comments. The POTD/W has definitely been a fun and enjoyable addition to the site.

I don't remember which one it was in, but there were some discussions in another thread earlier this week about the Jays 2006 schedule, speculating about the Jays home opener opponent.

The Twins posted their tentative 2006 schedule yesterday and they'll be at the Rogers Centre to kickoff the 2006 season. According to their sked, the opener will be Tuesday April 4th at 7:15. I'm already looking forward to a Halladay-Santana matchup.

Question: is it only ballplayers who stand with their right leg straight and their left leg bent, or does most everybody do it? :)

Apparently everyone except Eric Hinske. If you look closely you can see him behind Witt with his right leg bent. Someone better let him in on the secret.

Yes, and all this time the rumours have the Jays going after the wrong B-named Marlins pitcher.

This is the curse of 24/7 broadcasting on radio and TV. You have all this airtime to fill, and there are simply not enough halfway-rational things to talk about in that huge a space. So in order to fill airtime -- in order to provide some "content" between commercials and to keep the mouth-breathing listeners close to the speaker -- you end up saying things that are flat-out, unmistakably asinine, like this.

I know I run the risk of sounding like Abe Simpson here, but there are too many people with microphones and transmitters and no good reason to use either.

NFH, tremendous work on POTD all year. It's been a great addition to the site.

I wanted the classic 1977 Sox/Jays matchup! Godfrey better have some serious 30th celebrations this year.

I'm actually quite surprised the Cubs would allow him to do this.

I have friends who have their boat moored at the Port Credit Marina. I told them to check out your pictures and to spread the word. Good luck with the shows.

Victoria Day, Canada Day, Simcoe Day, Labour Day. All home games.

And it's about damn time. Don't underestimate the effects of this schedule on attendance. It's been absurd for the Jays to be away on Victoria Day and Canada Day the last few years.

Too bad the Jays didn't draw the NL West. The NL West was a huge boost to Cleveland's playoff hopes this year.
Andrew K - Friday, September 30 2005 @ 06:00 PM EDT (#129342) #
That schedule, at first glance, looks a lot fairer than recent ones. There don't seem to be any horrendous 2 week road trips -- none more than about 10 days.

Thanks, everybody. I look forward to doing it again next year.

Baseball photography is mostly just me fooling around and trying to figure out how to do it as I go along. I'd like to think that I got better as the season progressed.

Hopefully I don't forget what I've learned over the winter.

Ooh! Two reasons to be excited on October 11!

I'm actually in the middle of re-reading the series. Boy, does it start off strong. It's been years since I've read these books, and I remember why I loved them so much. I seem to remember the later books being less action-packed, but Jordan sure knows what he's doing.

By the way, if you're interested in a similar book series, do not read the "Sword of Truth" series by Terry Goodkind. They are basically the same storyline as the Wheel of Time, so you don't gain anything, and the books get far, far worse as the series progresses. I still have notes written for a very, very scathing review of "Naked Empire," which I bought as soon as I saw it and hated almost from the moment I wrote it. Goodkind always has an overriding concept behind a novel — that is, an idea he wants to get across. One of the novels can be summarized as "Command economies are bad." Naked Empire can be summarized as "Blind allegiance to a code of conduct is dumb." (Not as pithy, I know.) The worst part is that in Goodkind's little diversions, the story hasn't progressed — in fact, in one book, he focuses on an entirely new character, only returning you to the familiar 3/4 of the way through the book.

I don't want to turn this into a full review, so in summary, avoid Goodkind. I can't any more — I've been sucked in! — but don't make the same mistake I did.

Joe, this is off topic, but whatever, we're already off topic.

I can't understand how anyone could like Jordan anymore. It's a trainwreck. I liked how it started out... when I was in grade 7. I've now finished a Master's and have a career, and he's still not finished, and even worse, nothing happens in his books. He started off as a fun way to rip off Tolkien, and now he's just meandearing around with no hope of ever finishing. Of course, since the entire series was developed as a marketing exercise, it should keep going until one of the books doens't sell.

If you're looking for quality epic fantasy, you need to be reading George RR Martin. The quality of his stuff is so far ahead of Jordan that there doesn't exist a metric to measure the difference. He has the same problem with taking forever to finish his series, but at least he's extremely high quality. (Other great fantasy includes The Scar by China Meiville). I guess I should stop now, but I'm always eager to talk about sf and fantasy... along with the Blue Jays they're my favourite recreational abilities.

I agree with you about Goodkind by the way.
Named For Hank - Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 10:48 AM EDT (#129369) #
The only thing I've ever read by George RR Martin was a werewolf short story in some collection that I thought was pretty much the most brilliant werewolf story I had ever read. I kept meaning to read something else by him and never did.

I kind of need some new impossible task, as I'm approaching the end of "read everything that PKD ever wrote" (though a couple of the small-press books that reportedly aren't very good anyways will probably elude me) and I've now read every novel and short story by Raymond Chandler twice at minimum.

Winter is good for these things because there's no baseball. ;)
Paul D - Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 11:04 AM EDT (#129370) #
NFH, if you've read every Chandler, have you read every Hammett?
That would seem like a natural progression.
Named For Hank - Saturday, October 01 2005 @ 11:20 AM EDT (#129373) #
I've read all of Hammett's novels and am working on a somewhat dull collection of his letters (he loved a lot of women, apparently), but if I buy a collection of short stories I'd rather have something "complete". There was a complete stories collection available at one point, but it seems to be out of print. Now all the collections I find vary by only a few stories between them, so I'll be buying/borrowing a lot of books just to read one story, which seems a waste.

There are a couple of copies of the complete short stories collection in the Toronto Library system, but I've had a hold on 'em for a while without any luck, so I don't know what'll happen with that.

I also really want to see the Wim Wenders film "Hammett", which is either great or terrible depending on who you speak to. Reportedly, much of it was re-shot by Francis Ford Coppola before release! As far as I can tell it's being suppressed.
