Baseball America has published several Jays related articles recently.

The draft report cards are out for subscribers only.  As expected Brett Cecil had the best pro debut; Eric Eiland was named the best athlete; and Kevin Ahrens as best hitter.  Justin Jackson is the best defender and Alan Farina has the best fastball.  BA suggests that Farina could be a starter next season, whether that is for development reasons or whether the Jays think he could be a major league starter is unknown.

BA's AFL notebook for October 23rd has some glowing praise for Travis Snider.  “This is as polished a high school hitter as it gets and what he’s doing in this league is equally impressive as what he did during the regular season,” a veteran scout from a National League club said. “He controls the strike zone, he has the ability to drive balls on the inner half and will show you that power on pitches away from him."

Snider has also been named to play in the All-Star game.  Snider has been hitting well although he is up against more advanced competition.  A strong AFL could tempt the Jays to jump Snider up to AA to start next season.

The AFL notebook for October 24th reviews Ryan Patterson's season and his expectations for the AFL.

Keith Law from ESPN saw David Purcey pitch in Arizona and commented that he still flashed plus stuff with inconsistent command.

It was Blue Jay day in Scottsdale today.

Ricky Romero started, 2 IP, zero hits, 2 walks, 3 K's

Justin James relieved Romero and gave up two unearned runs in two innings, one hit, one BB, 3 K's

Jamie Vermilyea continued to struggle, 2 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs.

Ryan Patterson was 2-3 with a double, and is hitting .265 after a slow start.

Sergio Santos was 2-4 with a double and a home run and is hitting .250

Travis Snider was 3-4 with a home run and now is hitting .390.

Snider's OPS is now over 1.100. Granted, it's only 41 ABs, but these ABs are against much older competition. I'm really anxious to see what he does in spring training next year. It would be probably be wrong to have him up before midseason 2009, but if he continues to hit this way, the jays are going to be awfully tempted in '08. Ehh, he'll come down to earth, right?

Both Snider and Purcey have been named to the AFL Rising Stars Showcase roster.

According to TSN, the Jays have claimed pitcher Mike Gosling and shortstop Pedro Lopez off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

The Blue Jays have also outrighted pitchers Jordan DeJong, Lee Gronkiewicz and Jamie Vermiliyea to Syracuse of the International League (AAA).

I'm kind of skeptical about Gosling.  He walked nearly a batter per inning this year in Cincinnati and at 27 isn't likely to be improving too much.  Lopez I assume will fight with Adams for a bench spot if no better option appears before spring.

David Purcey currently leads the AFL in strikeouts with 13 in 8 innings.  And I'm guessing pitches per inning too...he may have taken 140+ pitches to throw those 8 innings.  The league leaders in innings have about 10-11 at this point.

So encouraging signs but still the same issues in being able to control the strikezone.

I don't think you can take too much out of 40 or so at bats for Snider but at his age that's pretty impressive.  I wonder if there will be more of a book on him for opposing pitchers as the league winds down.  I think that there's a decent possibility he'll see some significant AA time in 2008, post-draft.  The kid has polish.

R Billie, I've read in more than one place that the Jays are likely to put him straight in AA to start the year if he succeeds in the AFL since the AFL is roughly comparable to AA.

Santos has to play third base down the road. He's totally outgrown shortstop. Ryan Patterson's been very good, and Travis Snider is the best natural hitter I've seen in 2007. Period.

Mendo, I too have yet to see a list like that posted yet - though you may want to enlighten us as to what it is.  It looks like it could be a list of minor league players either released by the Jays or not added to the 40-man roster and thus exposed in the Rule 5 draft.

AY, it's a list of minor league free agents in the Jays system. The link has the rest of league's minor league free agents.
