Craig Burley asked for it, so his wish is our command: "You know, Scott Cassidy just retired too, and I don't see anyone composing paeans to his memory. Hmph."

Saturday, Matt Holliday homered off Cassidy in a frame in which "Butch" surrendered four runs in one-third of an inning. Yesterday, he retired.

Your thoughts and "paeans to his memory"?

He had a cool delivery.  Does that count as a paean?

The truth is, I didn't even know he was still in baseball until I read this post.

He gave up 23 homeruns in 122 innings. More of a pain than a paean.

Heh.  That was unexpected.

Cassidy, for eight batters out of every nine, was a pretty solid major league pitcher.  The problem was always that ninth guy, usually a big-time power hitter; Cassidy would challenge him inside with one of his flat fastballs and the ball would get pulled into the ionosphere.

It's better to retire than to be released - even if retirement might be preceding release by a matter of minutes.

I remember the time Cassidy tried to challenge Manny Ramirez. That ball could very well still be in orbit.
