John Parrish continues to pitch well and is a fine candidate to start for the Jays if an injury comes up. The affiliates were 1-2 on the night.

Syracuse 5 at Scranton/WB 0

Lefty John Parrish threw a three hitter over 8 shutout innings to lead the Chiefs. He struck out 7 and walked 3 on the night. In 71.1 innings this season Parrish has 79 Ks, 32 BBs, and just 4 HRs allowed for a 2.65 ERA. I'd think that he's the best option should the Jays need a starter.

Eric Kratz had a 2B and HR and is slugging .604 for the Chiefs this year. Lydon, Coats, and Sandoval also had 2 hits on the night.

NH - Day Off

Daytona 4 at Dunedin 1

Gus Chacin got the start and gave up 4 runs over 4 innings, striking out 1. Reidier Gonzalez came on and pitched the final 5 innings without allowing a run while striking out 2.

Arencibia, Patton, and Gonzalez each had 2 hits. Shoffit had the only XBH with a triple.

Lansing 3 at W Michigan 4

The Nuts managed just 3 hits on the night, but a Matt Liuzza HR put three runs on the board.

Marc Rzepczynski started and gave up 1 run in 6 innings. He struck out 5 and even picked off a runner. On the year he has a 2.08 ERA, has struck out 31 in 34.2 innings and has a 3.93:1 GB/FB ratio. He's certainly in line for a promotion to Dunedin.

Three Stars!:
3 -
Marc Rzepczynski
2 - Eric Kratz
1 - John Parrish

---

As pointed out by Bauxite mendocino, 2nd round pick Kenny Wilson signed as well as 11th round HS pitcher
Dustin Antolin from Hawaii.  Must be nice being that area scout!

Parrish is having a great season, but his walks are still high. His career BB/9IP in the minors is 4.30 (he's right around that number this year). In the majors it's 6.63.

Which is a huge part of his inability to stick in the bigs because his other peripherals are good. If he were called up, my concern is that the patient AL hitters would cause him trouble.

Zip has walked 5 batters all season.  I imagine that he'll get the call to Dunedin as soon as the first half is over, and the Lugs have hopefully locked up a playoff berth.

The Lugnut reliever who came on in the 7th inning with a 4-1 lead and gave up 2 earned runs in one inning is credited with a "hold".  What a useless statistic.

Odd lineup choice in Syracuse.
  1. Lydon: 284-366-351 - makes sense, good OBP, low Slg
  2. Coats: 295-352-389 - not bad, similar to Lydon
  3. Lind: 329-384-527 - best hitter in the 3 hole as normal
  4. Luna: 278-342-433 - better than his normal, but not a normal #4
  5. Watson: 261-378-336 - OK, this isn't what you expect in the 5 hole
  6. Sandoval: 346-393-558 - wow, but in Buffalo he hit 247-309-307 so I don't put much weight into it
  7. Adams: 228-318-383 - ugh, has fallen to earth hard
  8. Kratz: 275-333-604 - why is he hitting this far down?
  9. Cannon: 250-369-390 - this is what confused me the most
To me Sandoval and Adams should be 8/9 as Sandoval won't keep those nutty numbers for long.  Cannon should be around #5/6 and Kratz fits the traditional definition of a #4/5 hitter - power but not many walks ala Joe Carter.

I thought at first perhaps it is based more on who is a prospect but Watson is a AAA lifer while Cannon still has some prospect hope (very, very slim but it is there).  I know I'd be trying to get guys who might be called up as many AB's as possible thus bat them early if at all reasonable and Kratz is moving quickly to the #3 catcher slot (doubt Thigpen will see ML time again) while Cannon could be a callup for 1B/DH after Lind.  Watson isn't coming to the majors here, and Luna was just moved off the 40 man recently.  Not a big deal one way or the other but interesting none the less.

A minor league note: the Dominican Summer League has started.  Stats are at Baseball-Reference too, which is great as these used to be a nightmare to find.

The DSL Blue Jays 1 are 1-7 (ugh) with a 3.93 ERA (league average) getting over a K per inning overall
Their offense is hitting 224-318-302, all well below league average

The DSL Blue Jays 2 are 5-3 with a 3.47 ERA and an average age on the pitching staff of 18.5 years old.
Their offense is hitting 250-364-326 all but Slg above league average (avg is 230-337-328)

Best hitter so far between the two is DH/2B Gonzalo Gonzalez at 462-563-462 over 13 AB's

Yes, those stats are about as irrelevant as it gets but it is fun to look at.

Kratz has always hit in the number 8 or 9 hole in Syracuse, I believe because he is a catcher. As I say this I recall Diaz in the 6 hole, but I think Doug Davis bats most of his catchers in the bottom of the lineup, I guess so they have time to get ready to hit.

As for Adams, he looks awful at the plate. He went 0-fer the series against Columbus, and struck out about half the time. His walkup music recently changed from Usher's "Love in this Club" to a country song about going home to the Carolina shore, so my personal guess is that he just got dumped, but in any case, he looks lost at the plate.

I know I'd be trying to get guys who might be called up as many AB's as possible

I noticed that Justin Jackson dropped from 1st to 8th in the lineup, presumably because he's in a slump.

It looks like Robert Ray has been promoted to New Hampshire.  AJ WIdeman appears to be headed in the opposite direction.

Ray has been pitching very well recently, his ERA in May was 3.50 and in two June starts his ERA is 2.13.

John Parrish continues to pitch well and is a fine candidate to start for the Jays if an injury comes up.

Why do I have the nagging feeling deep down that Parrish may be starting for the Jays, anyway?  A replacement for a soon to be traded Burnett, perhaps?

Was listening to the Lugnuts game last night on the radio and Mike McDade made a number of good plays in the field.  The Lugnuts play-by-play man said that McDade is probably the best defensive first baseball in the Midwest League.

One of whom is first rounder David Cooper, who recieved a $1.5 mil signing bonus. Any idea when/where he'll start off?

He'll be starting in Auburn and he does well he will be off the Dunedin.

I am delighted by the signing of all the draftees that I liked.

David Purcey is on the beam tonight for Syracuse.  Four innings of shutout ball, no walks, five strikeouts and best of all 37 strikes among his 47 pitches.  Not to mention a 6-1 GO/AO.  I am still hoping that he gets a chance in the bullpen of the big club soon.

Sneeps - Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 08:36 PM EDT (#186976) #
And I'm hoping that Burnett gets traded for a prospect or 2, and Purcey takes his spot.
ayjackson - Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 09:13 PM EDT (#186977) #

Trading Burnett in July would be a clear sign that the Jays don't feel they can contend this year.  You won't see it unless we're 5+ games out with several teams between us and the WC leader.  JP will be ecstatic to get what he can out of Burnett this year and welcome a Supp pick next June.

I think Purcey comes up in August if there's a bullpen opening, when Cecil gets a look at AAA.

The Lugnuts and D-Jays are in the midst of great games, now each holding 1-run leads late.  Jeremy Accardo came on to pitch a scoreless eighth inning for Dunedin.

Jeremy Accardo came on to pitch a scoreless eighth inning for Dunedin.

Hey, I'd forgotten about him.

greenfrog - Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 10:02 PM EDT (#186986) #
Not only did Purcey have another strong start, but Lind went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a walk. He's currently hitting .339 with power. I'm OK with Wilkerson playing LF if he continues to hit, but Lind is making a pretty compelling case for himself at AAA. Guess that 2014 contract year is worth a lot to the Jays.

Purcey has great numbers, but two things about him make me a bit skeptical: his two big-league performances (which I don't put too much weight on) and his apparent lack of plus secondary stuff--especially given his age (26).
Gerry - Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 10:02 PM EDT (#186987) #
Kevin Gray at the Union-Leader has a print story and a video about Scott Campbell.  In the story Campbell admits that his offence is ahead of his defence.  In WWJP tonight JP said the same, he said Campbell would stay at AA for this season and work on his defence with a good chance to be in AAA next year.
Ryan Day - Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#186992) #
A good night to be a first-rounder: Purcey had a nice start, Snider went 3-4, Arencibia 2-4 with a homer,  Ahrens 2-4.
