As the Jays kick-off a short trip to Seattle, which will be their only trip to the Pacific Northwest this year, and hope for a mini-sweep, the farm teams completed a mini-sweep of their own, as an off-day and a postponement meant that there were only two games in the system last night and Toronto’s affiliates won both.

Las Vegas – Off-day

Scheduled off-day. Brad Mills faces off tomorrow against Albuquerque’s Roy Corcoran.

Trenton @ New Hampshire - Postponed

Postponed.

Bradenton 1 @ Dunedin 2Boxscore

The teams traded runs in the fourth inning and it remained tied at one until the bottom of the ninth, when it ended with a walk-off win. Michael McDade doubled after John Tolisano was retired and Adeiny Hechavarria came in to run. Dan Perales was walked intentionally and then Jon Talley ended the game with a single to left that scored Hechavarria. McDade was also involved in Dunedin’s first run, as he singled home Brian van Kirk during a two-out rally in the fourth. Dunedin only had seven hits in the game, six of which were split evenly between McDade, Tolisano and Talley. Tyler Pastornicky drew a pair of walks, but was caught stealing and committed an error.

Dunedin’s victory made a winner of Frank Gailey, who was the second reliever out of the pen in relief of Joel Carreno. Carreno went 6 innings and gave up four hits and a run on two walks and nine strikeouts. Of the nine batters retired on balls in play, Carreno forced seven of them to ground out. Dumas Garcia allowed a walk in an inning of relief, while Gailey allowed one hit over 2 scoreless innings for the victory.

Lansing 9 @ Dayton 3Boxscore

Lansing scored the first seven runs and although Dayton pulled within four, they would get no closer and a couple of additional runs gave the Lugnuts a 9-3 victory. Chad Jenkins was spotted a first inning home run by Ryan Schimpf and that was enough through his first five innings. He gave up three in the sixth, but pitched the seventh and finished with seven strikeouts on six hits and a walk. Dustin Antolin and Aaron Loup each pitched an inning to secure the victory.

Every Lugnut had a hit and none had more than two. The Lugnuts pieced together their runs, as they only had two extra-base hits aside from Schimpf’s homer. Brad McElroy and Balbino Fuenmayor each had two hits, which included a double. McElroy had 2 RBI and a run, while Fuenmayor scored twice and added an RBI. Ryan Goins and Eric Eiland each also had two hits. Mark Sobolewski, AJ Jimenez and Sean Ochinko each had a hit and a run.

Three Stars:
3rd Star – Michael McDade, 2-4, 2B, RBI, 3 TB
2nd Star – Chad Jenkins, 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
1st Star – Joel Carreno, 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

Jenkins had 3 ER, not 1.

How many innings does a college guy like Jenkins usually get at A before he gets bumped up to A+? He's off to a very encouraging start at Lansing...

that 9/45 ratio is very nice...

A.J. Jimenez is off to a very nice start, hitting .326/.357/.462 with much improved W/K numbers.  He is just 20 years old.  The catching depth in the lower minors is impressive.

As for Jenkins, it really isn't surprising that the club has given him a significant period in Lansing.  He didn't pitch for Auburn at all last year.  I expect that he'll be promoted to Dunedin soon, and if he succeeds there, he'll probably get a taste of double A in August.  This was roughly what the club did with Casey Janssen in his first full-season minor league year.

I think Jenkins might be in Lansing for the full year, and maybe get a call up to Dunedin in August.  As per Lugnut fan, it seems like Jenkins is getting by on sheer velocity.  I think he has a ways to go.

Jesse Litsch has been moved up to Las vegas where he will start tomorrow.

Bobby Bell has been placed on the DL in New Hampshire, backdated to May 17th.  No explanation as to why, yet.  Bell was due to start last night but was a late scratch and was to be replaced by BJ LaMura, until the rain came.

Why backdate it to the 17th when he last pitched on the 13th?

Spifficus - Thursday, May 20 2010 @ 02:35 PM EDT (#215341) #
Perhaps minor league backdating lengths are shorter because of the 7-day DL. I have no idea, but it makes sense, anyway.

Travis d'Arnaud returned from the disabled list and went one for four at DH in Dunedin last night .

Any  update on Moises Sierra ?

How do you get 21 hits in a game and lose?  Here's how. Runners thrown out on the bases.  Strikeouts with runners on third and less than two outs.  Badly timed GIDPs and lineouts.

On the other hand, the Fisher Cats have made a habit of coming back this season.  They're never out of it.  Sometimes late rallies will nevertheless fall short.

So it looks like we might be signing the top International free agent this year.

I hope they make a run at one of those Dominican outfielders as well.

I think Jenkins will be in Lansing for a majority of the season, but at some point I agree he will be promoted to Dunedin.  Jenkins still has some things to work on although some of his more recent outings have been encouraging.  He should be on schedule to pitch on Monday night against the Dodgers affiliate in the MWL and they have a pretty good offensive team that beat him up pretty badly in his first outing of the year.  It will be interesting to watch that match up.

I have to slight disagree with Mike which I don't do often.  I don't think Jenkins is ready for NH just yet.  When Janssen was in Lansing, he completely dominated everyone and quite honestly, I thought he was a AA pitcher when he was here.  Jenkins just hasn't had the dominate streak yet.  Janssen was also under a different regime.  I get the feeling AA might not be as aggressive with the promotions.

On this kind of thing, I defer to LF.  If he says that Jenkins is a fair piece from double A, he is likely right.

It's true that Jenkins is not dominating the MWL the way Janssen did. I guessed that as a first round collegian, he might be promoted quickly.
ayjackson - Friday, May 21 2010 @ 11:17 AM EDT (#215364) #
I think spending 50% of the season at A+ is likely the goal with Jenkins.  The Jays don't have much motivation to rush him up into the upper minors.  He'll dictate the pace.
LouisvilleJayFan - Friday, May 21 2010 @ 11:52 AM EDT (#215367) #
I'm not sold on Jenkins yet either and plan on going down to Bowling Green during the summer to catch a Lugnuts game or two to hopefully get a better look. However, at least we can all be thankful that he's not having the kind of campaign that Eric Arnett is having.
sam - Friday, May 21 2010 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#215372) #

Yes, you're most certainly right LouisvilleJayFan.  If my memory serves me right, Arnett was a player the Jays we're looking at.

Alex Wimmers reminds me of Arnett a little in this draft, overworked righty with average stuff across the board and from the Big Ten.

Reports have Dylan Covey slipping right now, it would be nice to nab him with one of our supplementals as he would be sure to sign considering his profession to play professional baseball now (see Baseball Beginnings).  But I guess nothing is certain in this business.

Jenkins still has some things to work on although some of his more recent outings have been encouraging.

LF if you see this I'd appreciate if you can elaborate on your first-hand perspective...his stat line looks really impressive, and what I like most is the fact he's gone at least 5 in each start and has been limiting the BBs and HRs while missing his share of bats.

ayjackson - Saturday, May 22 2010 @ 09:40 AM EDT (#215423) #
I think LF has previously alluded to Jenkins surviving on his fastball alone.  Though his scouting report coming out of college was three average to plus pitches.  He is supposed to have a good slider and change.
Lugnut Fan - Saturday, May 22 2010 @ 10:11 PM EDT (#215444) #
Sorry 92-93 for the delay in my response. Ayjackson is correct. Jenkins has been getting by on his four seam fastball and slider. He typically goes through the lineup the first time pretty efficiently, but when the lineup turns over on him, that is when he starts to get hit. In the games I have seen him throw, the opposition has squared him up pretty good and have hit him hard. Before he moves on, I think he needs to work on his change up or something else offspeed. I haven't seen him throw in awhile so I am unaware of some of the adjustments that he has recently made, but I am going to try to see him throw at some point this week.

Thanks LF, I appreciate the first hand fans' scouting reports for the minor league guys we can't see, so keep em' coming...you have at least one reader in me.
