Rehabbing Jayson Nix saw action in the opener of Dunedin’s doubleheader in the FSL, going 0 for 4 against Ft. Myers.  Lansing's contest vs. Great Lakes was suspended due to rain in the third inning. Dunedin swept and New Hampshire split in their respective twin bills against Ft. Myers and Reading , while late night Las Vegas lost at the hands of Albuquerque due to a brutal five-run 2nd inning rout of Scott Richmond.

Las Vegas 3  Albuquerque 8

10, 202 Cashman Field faithful suffered Scott Richmond’s second loss (2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 2 Ks), which included a five-run 2nd inning that saved Albuquerque from a sweep of the series by the 51s.  Chad Cordero, Clint Everts and Winston Abreu provided the 3 run relief, allowing a combined 7 hits in 7 IP.  While all of the Isotopes’ runs were earned, Eric Thames (0 for 3, 3Ks) and Travis Snider (0 for 5, K) had fielding errors, and Adam Loewen (0 for 2, 2 BB) tossed in a throwing error.

The 51s couldn’t rise at the plate to overcome the  2nd inning  five-run disaster, but they did manage to put three up on the board with RBIs from Brett Lawrie (1 for 4, R, HR, BB, K, RBI) with a solo homer and Manny Mayorson (1 for 4, 2 RBIs) a two-run single in the 8th.  Jonathan Diaz (2 for 3, BB) and Ryan Budde (2 for 3, R) turned in the only multi-hit performances for Las Vegas.  Dewayne Wise (1 for 4) chipped in a single.

New Hampshire 7  Reading 1

Ray Gonzales (4-1) completed 6 IP in the 7 inning opener of the Fisher Cats twin bill with Reading. He finished the winning one-run evening spacing out 6 hits and a BB, striking out 3.  Mike Hinkley came on in the 7th to retire Reading.

Ricardo Nanita (2 for 3, 2B, 3 RBIs) led the Fisher Cat RBI parade.  Moises Sierra (2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBIs) and Travis d’Arnaud (2 for 4, RBI, K) and Mark Sobolewski (0 for 2, RBI) added production as well.  Man Mountain Mike McDade (2 for 3, 2B, BB, K) had a multi-hit game.  Daren Mastroianni continued his struggle at the plate going hitless in four at bats.   Adeiny Hechavarria (0 for 4) and John Tolisano (0 for 4, K) were also hitless in four at bats.

New Hampshire 3  Reading 8 (nightcap)

Yohan Pino (0-3) took the loss with 4.1 IP allowing 4 hits (including 2 HR) and 5 runs (4 unearned) with a BB and 4 Ks.  Matt Daly came on for 1.1 IP walking two and striking out a pair.  Mike Hinkley made his second appearance of the evening retiring just one hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Callix Crabbe (1 for 3) had a fielding error and Adeiny Hechavarria (1 for 3, R, HR, 2 RBIs) was charged with an error on an interference call.

Hechavarria’s two-run homer in the 6th inning put New Hampshire on the board for the first time.  Daren Mastroianni (3 for 4, R, RBI) came out of his batting slump with three hits and an RBI in the Fisher Cats last at bat.   Craig Stansberry (1 for 3) singled.

Dunedin 3  Ft. Myers 2

Chad Jenkins (1-4) was impressive in his 6 IP spacing out 6 hits and allowing 2 earned runs, walking one and throwing 3 Ks.  Wes Ethridge came on in the bottom of the 7th to retire the Miracle and preserve the win for Dunedin

The rehabbing Jayson Nix (0 for 4, K) saw little action in the field, handling  just three ground outs at 3rd base.  At the plate he had two called third strike Ks, a ground out and a fly out.  Dunedin’s run production came from A.J Jimenez (2 for 3, R, 2B, BB, RBI), a triple by Brian Van Kirk (1 for 2, 3B, BB, RBI), and a single from Ryan Goins (1 for 2, RBI).  John Talley (2 for 3) and Brad Glenn (2 for 3, 2 R, 2B, K) had two hits each and Kenny Wilson (1 for 4, K) led off the game with a single.

Dunedin 7  Ft. Myers 1  (nightcap)

Sweeping the twin bill, winning pitcher Asher Wojciechowski (3-2) dominated with 7 Ks, allowing 6 hits, a BB and just 1 run in 6.0 brilliant innings pitched.  Frank Gailey  came on in the 7th and blanked the Miracle with two hits and a K.  Ryan Goins (2 for 4, R, 2 RBIs) missed a catch for and error.

Goins and Sean Ochinko (2 for 3, 3 R, HR, 2 RBIs) produced a pair of runs each with Ochinko blasting a homer with one on in the 4th inning.  Bryan Van Kirk (2 for 4, 2 R) was also a multi-hit batter in the game.  Kevin Ahrens (1 for 3, BB), Brad Glenn (1 for 4, RBI), Justin Jackson (1 for 3, R) and Ivan Contreras (1 for 2, RBI) all added singles.

Lawrie has now walked once in each of his last three games (in addition to hitting a couple of home runs). This is a good sign. I'm really curious to see when he and/or Thames get promoted. Once their Super-Two status is no longer an issue, and both players are playing defence consistently well, AA will have to consider calling them up. But he probably also wants to salvage some value out of EE and Rivera by giving them a chance to get their numbers up - especially since Rivera traditionally seems to heat up after April and May.

The American league seems to have good but not great teams this year - the Royals have altered their plans because that division is up for grabs, promoting Hosmer before super 2 and may promote more young talent if warranted - I wonder if other developing org. may follow suit. - In the next 9 games, the Jays 5 games against bottom feeders Twins/Astros and miss the top starters in games against the Tigers/Rays - interesting to see if the Jays can make any headway - Of course, I expect the Jays will probably go .500 and make it all academic.

It`s conceivable that by August, Snider, Cooper, Thames and Lawrie are all deserving of a spot on the ML Roster.  It should be interesting to see how that plays out.

Snider seems to be really struggling lately. Thoughts?

Anthopoulos addressed Lawrie earlier in the year while Lawrie was on a hitting tear. His view was that the league would eventually adjust to Lawrie, and they needed to see how Lawrie would adjust - in particular by accepting walks. So while the fact he is now beginning to accumulate walks is what they are looking for offensively, i suspect it'll be longer than the next few weeks before he's moved up.

Snider is a different issue. Anthopoulos made comments about Snider's ba soon after his return to AAA, and the gist of the comments seemed to be that they weren't impressed with the hits Snider had accumulated. He implied that Snider was not hitting the ball well and they weren't going to be deceived by a few early bloops. http://m.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/swing-is-the-thing-for-travis-snider/article2020317/?service=mobile

Has anyone had a chance to watch Sniders at bats in Vegas? Are his recent issues caused by him not being able to correct his mechanics or is he concentrating on his mechanics so much he seems to be losing his focus on the pitches, or is there some other reason?

Minor league baseball.com offers online broadcast to Vegas baseball. But is the camera viewing from the rear or behind the pitcher's mount? At any rate, nothing would beat a eye witness account by watching the games in person.

Anthony Gose has hit his first homer of the season tonight for New Hampshire and driven in four. He also scored on a wild pitch from second base in the first inning.

I'm not sure if Richmond's woes are PCL, lack of talent, or lack of focus knowing he's hopelessly burried in the Jays depth chart.
I wish the jays would pass him off to Seattle (close to home) or some team that would at least consider him for the back of the rotation or at least the pen. I hate to see the feel-good story come to such an unimpressive end.

Snider is probably reworking his swing, and that can take a while to get used to.

informative article on Farquhar:

Apparently he's pure side-arm now, and can bring it at 95 or so...which, maybe I'm ignorant, seems awfully fast for side-arming...

Quite the game in Vegas tonight. Eric Thames hit his 3rd double of the night (16th of the year, tying him for the league lead) with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 win.
The last double scored Brett Lawrie who had reached base with his 3rd walk of the night, Those 3 walks give him 6 in the past 4 games after walking only 5 times in his first 32. He also hit his 13th double and stole his 9th base. Lawrie had another error-free night in the field and has committed only one error in his past 24 games.
