Nine game, four wins.

Las Vegas 13    Tucson 8

Kyle Drabek took a bit of a step back on Thursday with a three inning, six run (five earned) performance. The upshot of it is he only walked one. I guess.

The offense, though, well that was humming. Adam Loewen had a rather large evening with a 3-for-6 performance that included a homer and four RBI. Danny Perales smacked his first dinger of the year, a Grand Slam.

New Hampshire 5    Binghamton 3 (Game One)

Despite the five runs, not a ton happened in this one. Travis D'Arnaud went 2-for-4 while Anthony Gose singled, walked and stole his 42nd base. Justin Jackson had the only extra base hit of the game, a double.

Chad Jenkins started and was quite effective going six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk against four strikeouts.

New Hampshire 0    Binghamton 1 (Game Two)

Five hits, all singles. Moises Sierra had one. Next.

Yohan Pino made the start here and went four striking out six before giving way to Casey Janssen who turned the side away in order with a strikeout in his inning.

Bradenton 6    Dunedin 2

Asher Wojciechowski started this one and was brilliant through three before the wheels loosened a bit. Woj finished with 5.2 innings pitched and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four. He also plunked a batter.

A 21 year-old got his first taste of Hi-A this season and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and strikeout. Not a bad debut by Brett Lawrie. Kevin Nolan had two hits while Ryan Schimpf doubled.

Lansing 3    Kane County 1

Nice start by Sean Nolin who went six shutout frames allowing three hits and a walk against seven punchouts.

Jake Marisnick did it all in this one going 3-for-4 with a HR and two runs scored. Michael Crouse had a hit and stole his 27th base.

Boise 1    Vancouver 5

Randy Schwartz is 25 and playing in Lo-A so he's not much of a prospect but that didn't stop him from going 3-for-4 with a triple and two HR.

After a quick promotion from Bluefield, David Rollins kept the good times rolling (sorry) with a five inning, one run, six strikeout performance.

Bluefield 4    Bristol 5

Not a ton to get excited about here. Les Williams started and was knocked around allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in three innings.

At the plate, Kevin Pillar had three hits while Chris Hawkins contributed a pair including a double.

GCL Blue Jays 5    GCL Pirates 10

A lot of ugly pitching lines in this one so it's probably pretty encouraging that starter Adonys Cardona managed to go 2.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits and two walks against one strikeout.

2011 draftee Jorge Vega-Rosado had three hits including a double while Alexys Rodriguez contributed three of his own.

DSL Blue Jays 3    DSL Cubs 4

Kervin Santiago continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 day and his first homer. Ricardo Guillen was the only other Jay with a multi-hit day.

Jairo Labourt kept his ERA at 0.00 through 19 innings with four two-hit frames. Ericdavis Marquez blew away five batters in 2.2 frames to lower his ERA to 0.50.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Adam Loewen- 3-for-6, HR, 4 RBI

2nd Star: Jake Marisnick- 3-for-4, HR, 2 R

1st Star: Sean Nolin- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Lawrie's Back...is fine.  BB provides good news at all opportunities.

After attending my first official PCL game last night, my only opinion is that I can't even put up the offensive numbers most of those guys had in a video game.  The midwest did nothing to slow anyone down.

The Jays have had a wide variety of Nolan like performances from many pitchers in the low minors this year. A lot of talent down there, should be interesting to see how it all shakes out over the next couple of years.

Exactly.  Most guys don't turn out the way you hoped.  You'd hope that the Jays get one or two of these guys breaking through and being good players.

BA's prospect hot sheet is up, Marisnick is number two and on the not so hot sheet Hechavarria makes an appearance.
R Billie - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 02:57 PM EDT (#238735) #
Most of these players had clear drawbacks as prospects, none were what I would call "blue chip" guys based on performance plus tools.  When you have a list full of a lot of B level prospects or less, you have to rely a bit on luck and/or instruction to get the most out of these players.  If it were a list with a lot of or even one A level prospect, I would have a different perspective.

Still, there are two major league regulars on that list (Rios and Hill), League currently holds a significant role, and McGowan probably would have a significant role if he didn't need multiple surgeries to get healthy.  So to get four potential major leaguers out of one list is pretty good.  You can say they produced no elite players but if you don't have elite prospects to begin with, it's probably unreasonable to expect elite players in the end.

Mike Green - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 03:10 PM EDT (#238738) #
Between 2006-2008, Rios was a 118 wRC+ who could play a pretty good centerfield.  I don't know if that is "elite", but that kind of performance will really help a club win.
Shane - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 03:11 PM EDT (#238740) #

None? Not Rios, McGowan, Quiroz, Rosario, or League? All guys drafted outta high school or signed as teenagers who had some dreamy minor league seasons. (Though I assume we agree that most of the 2000's prospect lists were full of Ricciardi college draft pick guys with limited upside)

R Billie - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#238741) #
I think the standard for "dreamy" minor league seasons is relative.  There's a difference between having good minor league seasons (which a lot of guys have) and simply excelling above and beyond on a consistent basis with quick advancement.  The Mariners had Felix Hernandez in the majors at 19.  Justin Verlander put up ridiculous numbers his first minor league season on the way to becoming a legit big league ace.  Rios never displayed huge power or patience in the minors but his total package as a big league player was still pretty solid as Mike pointed out.  Because of whatever character issues and contract issues that cropped up, the Jays could not capitalize long term on his considerable talent.  If that's the best talent on your list, no, you don't have an elite collection of prospects.

Lawrie is probably as close as the Jays have come in a long time to having a prospect with the performance, age, and tools to become a true front line major league player.  The last one was probably Carlos Delgado or Shawn Green.  Roberto Alomar was also pretty elite, having made the big leagues at 19 at second base with pretty decent polish, tools, and performance.  When the Jays present a list with at least one or more of these types of players, we can say they have an elite prospect list.  I think there's still hope for Snider to realize that front line status.

If he doesn't, it's going to be a major bummer.

Who wouldn't. Word.

Would that be "tweetment?"...Okay, someone put me out of my misery now.

Out of those 10, there are 4 guys whose best years are worth talking about (Rios, McGowan, League and Hill).

The thing I like about the Jays right now, is that there isn't just 10 good ones.  Everyday right now, they seem to have a new signing from central America.  The rumour is that Beede and Norris might be signing soon.  I don't think everyone of them are going to pan out, but statistically speaking we are increasing our chances.

I also want to point out that it is not the same minor league system from a couple years ago.  There seems to be a real concentrated effort to get quality staff and facilities. Whether it is better or not, it is not the same.  I have more confidence right now that they will become better under the current system.

Shane - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 06:11 PM EDT (#238758) #
Right. But the perfomance you did get from those players, wasn't anywhere good enough to win a AL East division. You have to hope a current list produces more than third/fourth place talented teams.
katman - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 09:41 PM EDT (#238761) #
All I know is, I'm really happy right now to see Snider and Thames in the field, instead of Rivera and Nix. When Lawrie replaces Patterson, I'll get happier again. When Loewen or Cooper replace E5, my happiness will go up once more.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying Lind at 1st. Who'da thunk?

Hechavarria must read BA, he had three hits tonight.

I don't know where to post this but let me proclaim, I come not to bury Yunel Escobar but to praise him.  People keep writing about this guy or that guy coming to the Blue Jays and Yunel Escobar moving to second base or third base or whatever.  Has anyone been watching this guy play shortstop?  He is fantastic.  He has fabulous hands, a marvellous arm.  He is steady and at times spectacular and he swings the bat but most of all, he turns ground balls into outs.  Ground balls that carom to his left and ground balls that rebound to his right.  He makes plays he has no business making.  Nobody is moving this guy anywhere.  Watch him play for two weeks.  If you watch him play one or two games he is impressive.  But if you watch him play for a couple of weeks, he is awesome.  Maybe other guys in this town have played shortstop as well as Yunel, but no one has played it better. Go on, find some obscure statistic and naysay me but this guy is wonderful.  Maybe if that Joey Bats guy wasn't casting such a blinding light, we'd hear a little more about Mr. Escobar but he is a jewel and people need to spend more time saying so.

Spifficus - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 10:19 PM EDT (#238765) #
Oh, I definitely think that Escobar has done more than anything you could ask for defensively and deserves to own the position. I hope the only reason us fans consider that move is because of the lack of available 2B options in the offseason. Oddly enough, it's looking like it might be easier to acquire a SS and move one of the two over. In the Reyes scenario, I think he'd take the Jays off the list entirely (as opposed to a long shot) if they were asking him to move to second.
budgell - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 11:37 PM EDT (#238767) #

Mr. Escobar but he is a jewel and people need to spend more time saying so.

So!  Couldn't agree more.  Would love to see him go hard, all the time, but still have enjoyed watching him more than any other Jay (Joey Bats included) this year.

this makes me smile:

Aaron Sanchez, over the last two games:

9 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 14 K

Also tonight, Litsch, Alvarez, and McGowan all did nice work - McG went 2.2 scoreless innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, three K's
