Dunedin 1  Bradenton  8

Bret Lawrie (0 for 3), playing 3rd for 7 innings in his second Rehab game at Dunedin, came up hitless but got his bat on the ball three times.  The D-Jays could only put up 5 hits on the evening while the Pirates battered Dunedin Pitching for 8 runs on 12 hits.  Ryan Tepera (L, 7-5) (5.1 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 5Ks) took the loss, relieving starter Dustin McGowan (2.2IP,H, BB, 3Ks).

Dunedin’ lone run came in the 2nd when Ryan Goins (0 for 3, BB, K) walked, Ivan Contreras (1 for 3, 2B, RBI, K) doubled plating Goins.  Brad McElroy (2 for 4, 2B) and A.J. Jimenez (2 for 4) each posted a multi-hit game.

Lansing 3  Kane County 1

Seven Ks, 3 hits on no runs in 6.0 innings pitched secured the win for starter Sean Nolin (2-2). Relievers Dustin Antolin (H,3) and Danny Barnes (S, 6) came on allowing a single run on 4 hits in their 3.0 IP.

Luggies’ runs came from the heart of the line-up, led by Jake Marsnick (3 for 4, 2R, HR,RBI) with his solo dinger in the 1st inning.  RBIs were also dished up by Marcus Knecht (0 for 4, RBI) and a single by K.C. Hobson (1 for 4, RBI).

Vancouver 6  Boise 7

Vancouver dropped a heartbreaker when Boise scored a top of the ninth go ahead run.  Losing pitcher Travis Garret(3-2) (1.0 IP, 2H, R, K)took his second loss giving up a run on a pair of hits in the top of the ninth.  Starter Jesse Hernandez (5.0IP, 5H, 3R, 2BB, 6Ks) gave up some ground, but kept things close with 6 strike outs.  Vancouver had a couple of errors, one each from Garret Maines (1st) (0 for 3, BB) and Bryan Kervin (3rd) (1 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K).

Bluefield 3 Kingsport 1

Bluefield managed to kick a little Kingsport Friday behind the six-hit, 13 strike out pitching of Aaron Sanchez (W, 1-1) (5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7Ks) and Myles Jaye (S,1) (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6Ks).

Bluefield’s offence was fueled by Daniel Arcilla’s (1 for 3, 2 RBIs, BB) 2 run single in the 7th and Aaron Munoz(1 for 1, RBI, BB) who singled in Christopher Hawkins (3 for 4, 2B, K) the games top hitter with three.  Kevin Pillar (2 for 4, R) had a pair of singles.

GCL Blue Jays 6  GCL Yankees 12

Starter Jose Vargas (0-1) could get only a single out, but gave up 6 runs on 6 hits, including a pair of Home Runs and put the Blue Jays in a deep hole the couldn’t get out of.  Vargas’ ERA ballooned to 162.00.  Santiago Nessy (2 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 Ks) suffered a pair of errors, bringing his total to four on the year.

In the first inning Dickie Thon (2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI) led the four run charge plating a pair with a double.  Angle Gomez(0 for 4, RBI, 2Ks) and Seth Conner(1 for 3, RBI) together added a pair of RBIs as well.

DSL Blue Jays 6,  DLS Cubs2 2

Our DSL bats made us proud with 9 hits and a nice starting performance from Eyerys Guerra (4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 Ks 1 HR) foretold good things on the day.  Relief pitching came on to shut out the Cubs2.   Winner Manuel Lopez (2-1) had 3.2 IP, H, 0 R, 3Ks, and saver Steven Romero (S, 4) came on to put the lights out with 1.1 IP, H, 0 R, K.  The DSL Jays suffered two errors in the field from Jonathan Pumarol (0 for 4, 2Ks), his 7th and Cesar Barazarte (2 for 5, 2B, RBI), his 3rd.  But the Cubs2 really lost their touch in the field with 9 errors.

On offence the Blue Jays brought on no less than 9 hits led by other multi-hitters Mauricio Nagahashi (2 for 5, 2 Ks), and Angle Rojas (2 for 5, R).  Jacinto Cipiota (1 for 3, R, RBI, K) and Luis Martin (1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, 2 Ks) contributed an RBI each.

d'Arnaud has had 10 past balls so far this year. Is there any reason for concern?
Lugnut Fan - Saturday, July 16 2011 @ 12:40 PM EDT (#238787) #

I was in Fort Wayne last night to watch Litsch's start.  He was outstanding and it looks like he could be ready for a return to Toronto at any time.  He was changing speeds well, his breaking ball and change up were outstanding and he changed speeds and locations on his fastball quite well.

The only concern I had last night after looking at Litsch is....How do I say this politely......It looks like he may need some conditioning.  In person he very much appears to be out of shape.  But six strong innings later, he didn't appear to be tired and didn't lose anything of any of his pitches and it looked like he could have gone longer if they had so chosen.

I wonder if there's any thought of moving D'Arnaud up to AAA for the remainder of the year?

I guess you would run into a problem if he goes up there and puts up video game numbers like everyone else. You'd get people clamouring to bring him up before the Jays feel he's ready defensively.

Litsch has always seemed to be a good athlete in a 'bad' body, but one can't help but wonder if some of the frequent injuries are a part of conditioning .  The guy is a consistent contributor at the back end of a rotation, and a great underdog story, so I hope he gets another shot with the Jays.  I love the asset maximization of AA, getting value out of JoJo in the rotation, but guys like Litsch and Jansenn do get the short end of that stick.

Career:

Litsch (26): 67gs, 5.8ip/gs, 25-27, 1.33whip, 4.16era
Reyes (26): 56gs, 5.2ip/gs, 10-22, 1.64whip, 5.89era

please, AA, stop this madness.

please, AA, stop this madness.

Within 15 days. Two more starts. Be patient.

Thing is - when August 1 gets here there might be three candidates to replace him. McGowan has three more turns before his 30 days are up.

The distinguishing point is - of the three, McGowan is the one who can't be optioned, and (like Loewen) then need to see him work in the majors and preferably outside September. So even when Reyes gets dealt (I'm convinced it's "when" not "if") it might not be Litsch who comes back.

"please, AA, stop this madness".

Rajai Davis is the one is now driving me crazy. He misplays a shocking number of balls. (He cost Romero 2 ER today with two separate terrible plays.)

Christopher Hawkins (3 for 4, 2B, K) the games top hitter

Hawkins had two more hits today for Bluefield to stretch his hitting streak to 14 games, during which he's hit .372 and flashed a little bit of everything -- two doubles, two triples, two homers and three SBs. He's a converted HS SS (to LF) with a big athletic frame, functional speed, a live bat and little interest in taking a walk (3 in 25 games). An interesting fringe prospect who turns 20 next month.

So, do we see Lawrie in a week or 2 or does he go back to Vegas after the rehab?

Does the ankle injury changes anything with Bautista playing 3rd?

Hawkins? Third round pics are not generally considered "fringe"

So, do we see Lawrie in a week or 2 or does he go back to Vegas after the rehab?

I believe the idea is he plays through the weekend at Dunedin, then goes back to AAA - Farrell was quoted as saying he needs at least 10 games there to get his momentum back. After next week the next road series begins August 2 - that's when I'd expect to see him if there's no setback.

Just looked at the Dunedin boxscore for a certain 3B.  Looks like Lawrie's been plunked twice in 3 at bats.
Must have a fair sized target on him.

Dont think Darnaud is going to AAA as long as Fasano is in New Hampshire. I think is about time Jays pitchers start protecting their batters. Molina needs to send a message.

Anyone know what happened to Kellen Sweeney? He was in the Bluefield lineup but I haven't seen him in the lineup for about 2 weeks now.
dan gordon - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 01:50 AM EDT (#238813) #

Great game by Litsch.  I don't think it's long before he's back in the Jays' rotation.

Great to see McGowan steadily increasing his IP, and no reports of any health problems.  His control seems to be slowly coming around, too.  Be interesting to see what they do when his 30 days are up - they can sit him out then for 7 days and restart with another 30 days rehab if they feel they need to.

Would love to see Knecht and Marisnick moved up a level.

Regarding Sweeney's "disappearance" -  he was hitting about .110  - they may have decided to keep him out to work on some things for a bit, although I see that he is now on the 7-day DL, so he may have been held out for the injury and they finally decided to DL him.  Last game he played was June 30th.

Sanchez has really turned things around after a very poor start to his pro career.  Nice to see that performance from him last night.  Just 11 hits + walks in 14 IP in his last 3 starts.

Bobby Ray pitched a great game for Vegas tonight.  Janssen pitched another scoreless inning - he's got to be about ready to come back.

Regarding Hawkins, it's nice to see him OPS'ing .871 after only .674 last season with the Gulf Coast League team.  He's handling lefties really well, too.  As I recall, the Jays were quite happy to have picked him up in the draft last year.  Nice blend of skills.

Sanchez has really turned things around after a very poor start to his pro career.

Just a note - Sanchez got 10 starts last year, 2.16 ERA and 37 K's in 25 IP

Too many walks but not "very poor" - was just his first 2-3 appearances this year that stunk.

Oh, and Janssen's last test was pitching on back to back days, which he'll do tomorrow - likely he'll be activiated for Tuesday's game.
R Billie - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 08:42 AM EDT (#238819) #
Who goes down once Janssen is ready? Perez has options and he hasn't pitched incredibly well lately, giving up a couple of key homeruns to power hitting lefties. That leaves you with Rzep as the only lefty though.

Has anyone read any scouting reports on Nestor Molina lately? His numbers this year are terrific - I'm curious about what scouts think of him, and where he might end up in the Jays' prospect rankings.
R Billie - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 09:52 AM EDT (#238822) #
Molina is a command, pitchability pitcher with a quality splitter as an out pitch.  He's 22 in A+ ball but he's an infielder recently converted to pitching so he's a bit light on track record and experience.  His focus seems to be on being an efficient guy, getting under that 15 pitch per inning mark consistently and he's certainly done that this year.  He's actually much more effective against lefty batters because of the split though I find that odd because you'd think that pitch would work equally as well against righties.  Maybe they see it better for whatever reason.

His fastball is probably his weakest pitch, high 80's, maybe touches 90 occasionally.  But he commands it well as he does most of his pitches.  He'll have to keep that up at higher levels and somehow deal with righty batters better (apparently his breaking ball is coming along).  I see a guy who is not unlike Villenueva currently is with the Jays, probably with better command.  His split is apparently good enough he might even make a good short reliever down the road.

greenfrog - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 10:06 AM EDT (#238823) #
The one recent report I've read was from John Sickels, whose minor league notes from June 2 suggest that Molina might have a bit more stuff (throwing up to 92-94). However, you would think that he would have attracted more notice if he could throw that hard. In any case, here is Sickels' summary:
. . .

**Another Florida State League pitcher having an excellent season is Nestor Molina of the Dunedin Blue Jays. The 22 year old right-hander from Venezuela has a 2.75 ERA with a spectacular 62/5 K/BB ratio in 52 innings, with 46 hits allowed and a 1.76 GO/AO. Originally an infielder, he converted to pitching in 2008 and was originally a reliever before moving to the rotation this spring. Molina has a good splitter and cutter, and has boosted his velocity his spring, reportedly into the 92-94 range. The results are undeniable, but with all the right-handed pitching the Jays have collected in their system of late, his long-term destination may still be the bullpen.
Marc Hulet - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 10:44 AM EDT (#238824) #
I have Molina in the 88-93 mph range... The organization is working to have him maintain his peak velo later in games.
bpoz - Sunday, July 17 2011 @ 11:14 AM EDT (#238826) #
As a 1-2 inning RP how much faster would he throw, since he does not have to save himself.

IN general would it be true that an ex SP has or very often develops problems with his non FB pitches when he becomes a RP. He definitely has a lower pitch count to utilize and therefore loses the feel.
