Wednesday was a huge night on the farm, with all affiliates in action and New Hampshire in action twice. Vegas and Dunedin won by huge margins, the GCL Jays won in 14 innings, and the farm as a whole went 6-3.

Las Vegas 11 at Memphis 0

Oh yeah. Las Vegas absolutely crushed Memphis on Wednesday night, and it wasn't even in Vegas. I could tell you about pretty much any hitter here, but let's go with Adeiny Hechavarria (2-4, BB), David Cooper (1-5), Travis Snider (1-4, HR, BB) and Jayson Nix (2-3, 2B, 2 BB). It should also be noted that Jason Lane DHed, but was probably available out of the bullpen. Could we see him do both, I mean simultaneously, at some point soon? That'd be cool.

Chad Beck was excellent in getting the win, hurling seven and a third scoreless innings. Beck didn't strike many guys out and gave up more fly balls than ground balls, so he was probably walking a tightrope, but he limited the walks and got some good luck on balls in play.

New Hampshire 4 at Altoona 5 (7 innings)

Altoona scored two in the bottom of the sixth (in a seven inning game) to take the lead and the Cats couldn't back against Curve closer Noah Krol. Chad Jenkins pitched a six-inning complete game and did what he does best: he got 11 groundouts to just three fly-outs, and he didn't walk many (two). But despite those positive attributes, one strikeout just isn't enough, and he needs to show he can miss some more bats.

Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Gose too did what they do best, which is be awesome baseball players. The NH catcher went 2-4 with a homer, his 18th of the year, and Gose reached base twice on a single and a walk and stole his 53rd and 54th bases of the year.

New Hampshire 6 at Altoona 3

In what I think was the second game (I'm way too lazy to look it up, but it was six degrees colder in this game, implying evening vs. afternoon), the Cats got shut down for six innings but came roaring back in the final frame after Altoona had already used their closer (in the first game). The Cats bats plated five in the seventh thanks to a solo homer from Yan Gomes and consecutive two-run hits by Dan Perales (double) and Travis d'Arnaud (single). Gomes had the best day of the plate, going 3-3 with the aforementioned homer.

Starter's duties fell to B.J. LaMura, who at least kept his team in it. Frank Gailey and Clint Everts were perfect out of the bullpen.

Dunedin 10 at Clearwater 1

Dunedin pulled their best Vegas impression in pummelling Clearwater on Wednesday night.

The good: Asher Woj (7 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K), A.J. Jimenez (3-4, 2B, SF, 4 RBI), Sean Ochinko (2-5, HR), Ryan Schimpf (1-3, HR, 2 BB), Kenen Bailly (who was discussed yesterday, 2-4).

The bad: nothing.

Lansing 2 at Bowling Green 3

Lansing mustered a valiant comeback attempt in the ninth, scoring a run to come within one, but that was as close as they got. K.C. Hobson singled and doubled in four trips, and catcher Jack Murphy singled, walked and homered. Tyler Powell pitched five innings of two-run ball.

Salem-Keizer 1 at Vancouver 4

Vancouver stifled the Volcanoes last night, getting a solid four-inning start from Ben White and scoreless relief from Kramer Champlin, Philip Brua and Drew Permison in the process. That provided plenty of breathing room for the bats to bang out a few runs, and they bang they didn't, really. But they hit lots of singles and drew lots of walks, especially Kevin Patterson (2-3, BB), and that worked.

Burlington 3 at Bluefield 7

Aaron Sanchez got the start and dominated the Royals over five innings, giving up just two hits and whiffing seven while allowing a single run. Even though the bullpen gave up two more, the bats had built enough of a lead. Notably, Art Charles reached base thrice, Chris Hawkins was 3-4, and Kevin Pillar (pronounced Pil-LAR) singled and tripled.

GCL Jays 9 at GCL Pirates 8 (14 innings)

Whoa. A marathon game that saw the G-Jays throw nine pitchers at the Pirates ended in a victory when Christian Frias doubled home Jacob Anderson in the top of the 14th. Among the pitchers used were starter Joe Musgrove (3 IP, 1 H, 2 K) and Jeremy Gabryszwski (1 IP, 2 K).

Jorge Vega-Rosado probably had the best game at the plate, going 2-5 with a double, a walk and a sac fly.

DSL Jays 0 at DSL Angels 3

Not much to see here. Jairo Labourt pitched and allowed two hits and two walks over three innings, striking out four. No hitter reached more than once.

Three Stars!
3. Aaron Sanchez - 5 IP, 7 K
2. A.J. Jimenez: 3-4, 2B, SF, 4 RBI
1. Asher Woj: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER.

You know a guy is hot when he goes 2-4 and his average drops (Hechavarria).

Beck did nicely there for Vegas. Good organizational arm, this is his first year above A level (6th minor league season).

Oh wow.  Another great start by Molina for NH today.  If he keeps this up then which Venezuelan is the top Blue Jay pitching prospect?
uglyone - Thursday, August 18 2011 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#241428) #
That makes Molina's AA line so far: 2gs, 11.0ip, 13.9k/9, 17.0k/bb, 0.0hr/9, 0.64whip, 0.82era

not too shabby a start to the new level.

Also nice to see Jimenez pick it up a bit lately...he was struggling for a long while there.

Jeff (Calgary)

Hey Keith,I admittedly really only follow the Jays low minors system, but it seems pretty good based upon the numbers. Off the top of your head, what other organizations stack up with the Jays in terms of A ball young arms?
Klaw (1:51 PM)

They are loaded, perhaps the best in that department. Can't tell you how many good reports I've gotten on Nicolino this summer.

Fantastic stuff by Molina.

My guess is that he is going to be shut down for the season now (or very soon). He is at 119 Innings pitched, and he threw 81 innings last year.

Another young arm to be excited about going forward.

The early returns on the double A test are A+ for Mr. Molina.

The last Jay pitching prospects with somewhat similar W/K numbers would be Marcum, Bush and McGowan.  We will see if Molina can keep it up.  He gets RHH and LHH out about equally, and you could probably make him a closer without much difficulty.

If Hechavarria's success in AAA  continues, he and d'Arnaud are really going to mess up alot of the ranking sites who continue to buy the Red $ox ( Iglesias ) and Yankee$ ( Montero ) publicity/propaganda pap ?

Is it a given that Hechavarria returns to NH for the playoffs ?
boz - Thursday, August 18 2011 @ 05:58 PM EDT (#241465) #
Maybe Hechavarria is in a baseball version of those body switching movies,or in this case batting switching movies, but who did he change souls with?.

Its great that Hech has been hitting... but its only been six games vs 111 of scuffling in AA.
greenfrog - Thursday, August 18 2011 @ 09:34 PM EDT (#241487) #
Hechavarria was heating up a bit towards the end of his AA stint, wasn't he? Seems like he's had a good couple of weeks in AA/AAA.

I'm skeptical about Hech, but he is young and athletic, so maybe he's making some adjustments. With his speed and supposed defensive skills, it would be fabulous if he could be an average-ish hitter for a SS.
uglyone - Thursday, August 18 2011 @ 11:16 PM EDT (#241494) #
yeah it's more like 16 games of new hotness vs. 100 games of struggles.

Point of order:

In his last 13 games at AA (7/27 through the call up) his slash lines were-
.375/.417/.518/.935
in 56 at bats.

Still a very small sample, even combined., but encouraging. It pays to remember,. too, that this great AAA work has occured on the road in TN, not in the wild west.

Syndergaard threw 5 innings of no-hit ball with 8 Ks late last night, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead for him. I suppose that he will open 2012 in Lansing, but you could make a case for Dunedin.
Ryan Day - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 08:58 AM EDT (#241510) #
Shi Davidi was at the Canadians game, and reports that Syndergaard may have thrown a 102mph fastball. (depending on how much faith you have in Rookie League radar guns & scoreboard displays)
Mike Green - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 09:14 AM EDT (#241512) #
Point of order.  The Northwest League is A ball (and the average crowds of 4,000 will support more advanced services than you might see in a Rookie League game).  Still, I wouldn't take 102 literally, but if you knock 4 mph off it, that still is a lot of juice.

Um, is this the Eric Arce who OPSing 1.070 for the GCL Jays? Looks like he got himself into some trouble last year...

http://www.wftv.com/news/23105399/detail.html

Gerry - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 10:13 AM EDT (#241526) #
That is Arce.  He had a scholarship to college that was withdrawn and I don't think he played before the Jays drafted him.  I believe when he was drafted there was no college or high school linked to his name.
MatO - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#241530) #

Eric Arce did actually go to Florida State where he had only 10 AB and then left the team.  I'm not sure why.  Attached is an interview of him which doesn't mention his "troubles".

ogator - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 10:51 AM EDT (#241534) #

What a conversation about nothing!  If everyone who got caught making out in the back of a car got "in trouble," governments would be justified in building more prisons.  This story tells a lot more about how insanely stupid Florida laws and law enforcement officers are than anything about the player in question.  On his behalf, I really resent rehashing gossip about absolutely nothing.  And please, please let's not begin some puritanical debate about who should be kissing whom.

DaveB - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 11:17 AM EDT (#241541) #
Arce was the starting DH, backup 1B at Florida State when the season began. He left the team in early March for academic reasons. Charges related to the HS incident were dropped.
BalzacChieftain - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 11:20 AM EDT (#241544) #
That's good to hear. He sounds like a good kid from that interview that was linked above. Interesting to hear him talk about his OBP skills. Here's hoping he keeps mashing all the way up the ladder.
Mylegacy - Friday, August 19 2011 @ 12:10 PM EDT (#241558) #
At Tamra's site The Southpaw - she compares Arce to "Matt Stairs." As Arce is a 5'9" 210 pound power hitting lefty  - it looks pretty accurate to me too.
