New Hampshire and Dunedin were your Tuesday night winners in a 2-4 effort on the farm.  The lone Canadian club in the system had a horrendous night in Oregon.

Fresno 7 Las Vegas 6

Las Vegas, NV
- The Giants affiliate barely eked this one by scoring in the ninth to break a 6-6 deadlock.

Hitting - David Cooper (3/5) boosted his average to .375 with a double and an RBI.  Jayson Nix (2/5) hit a two-run homer (5) and earned a free pass.  Ricardo Nanita (2/5) doubled and drove home two runs while Manny Mayorson (2/5) made the hit column more than once.  Adam Loewen (1/4) heard ball four once, Jason Lane (1/4) doubled, Chris Woodward (1/5) scored two runs and Adeiny Hechavarria (1/5) saw his BA fall to .412.  Ryan Budde (0/4) and Darin Mastroianni (0/1) had no luck with the bat.

Pitching - Lefty P.J. Walters was walloped for four runs over five innings.  Three of the runs were earned on four hits, two walks and two hit batters.  He struck out three and induced seven groundouts.  Winston Abreu gave up a solo home run among two hits and struck out two over two innings.   Former Royal Hiram Kyle Davies gave up a hit and plunked a batter that led to a run over one inning of work.  Danny Farquhar (4-5) took the loss by giving up a run on two hits in his one frame of work.

Defence - Hechavarria hurled one away at short and Mayorson dropped one at second.

New Hampshire 9 Trenton 1

Running - Gose stole his 60th of the season with Sierra slightly behind with 14.

Pitching - Just two hits and no walks for Nestor Molina (2-0) over five shutout innings that saw him ring up seven Ks and five groundouts.  Lefty Frank Gailey was gonged for four hits, a walk and two wild offerings but gave up just one run while striking out two over two innings.  Rei Gonzalez matched two hits with two Ks in his scoreless inning of work and lefty Clint Everts pitched a squeaky-clean ninth.

Defence - Diaz fired one away at short but d'Arnaud pegged a runner at second from behind the dish.

Dunedin 6 Lakeland 1

Dunedin, FL - Dunedin took care of a 1-0 first inning deficit with two runs in the first, one in the fifth and three more in the eighth.

Dayton 6 Lansing 1

Lansing, MI - The Reds affiliate scored all six runs by the time the Lugnuts responded in the fourth.

Hitting - Marcus Knecht (1/3) provided the offence with a solo homer (16) and also picked up a walk.  Jack Murphy (2/4) doubled and Matt Nuzzo (2/4) had the other multi-hit effort.  Markus Brisker (1/4), Oliver Dominguez (1/3) and Gari Pena (1/3) had the other hits.  However, Brisker whiffed three times while Dominguez and Pena whiffed twice each to account for most of Lansing's 11 Ks.  Jake Marisnick (0/4), Carlos Perez (0/4) and K.C. Hobson (0/4) had nothing to contribute with the stick.

Running
- Nuzzo stole second base (4).

Pitching - Lefty Egan Smith (6-7) was slapped around for six runs on nine hits and two walks over five frames.  He allowed two homers but punched out four batters.  Brandon Berl did a nice job in relief with four scoreless frames while scattering three hits with no walks.  He struck out two and got eight outs on the ground.

Syndergaard has hit triple digits on the lansing gun three times in the first inning with the high being 104. Landings gun is typically 5 mph fast, but he definitely throws hard. He is the prototypical Texas pitcher.

One thing AA said on TV last night was that Travis d'Arnaud will play for team USA this off-season. I am not sure what tournament team USA is playing.

This means that d'Arnaud will not be playing in the AFL.

Make sure you do the Jays defensive scouting for Tom Tango- remember he does some work for the Jays!

Lugnut Fan, can you give us an end-of-outing report on Syndergaard's off-speed stuff?

Thanks
Lugnut Fan - Wednesday, August 24 2011 @ 07:34 PM EDT (#242206) #
Can do Gerry. So far he hasn't thrown anything but a heavy hard fastball. I have been looking for something off speed, but haven't seen it yet.

Drew Hutchison has matched Molina precisely over 5 innings tonight- a 2 hit shutout, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts, and a 7-0 lead.

Hutchison is amazing. He basically puts up the same line wherever you put him. Kid has some serious helium. Could he make it all the way to Toronto in 2012?

From what I saw of Syndergaard tonight he has a four seam fastball that sits in the upper 90's.  It is a very, very heavy fastball.  It looked like he also had a two seamer that he threw in the lower 90s.  He threw four or five change ups and that sat around 84 consistently.  Finally he threw two curve balls tonight.  Both of them had very, very good tilt, but they were both thrown about 55 feet.  I would have liked to have seen him throw more off speed pitches, but he really didn't need too.

He is a very big kid and has a very good build for a pitcher.  He has pretty big legs and a pretty solid base.  Typically you don't see many scouts at games in Lansing come this time of year, but there were a dozen or so on hand tonight and they were all on the phone once his outing was over to give their reports.  The kid is a keeper, but he looks like he may be a little bit more of a thrower than a pitcher right now.  All the tools are there though.

The Jays have so many impressive pitching prospects now, it's almost getting hard to keep track of them.  It will be interesting to see how they all rate in various top prospect lists.  It used to be tough to come up with 7 or 8 that looked really good, but now, if you take a top 8 of say Alvarez, Hutchison, Drabek, Sanchez, Molina, Nicolino, Norris, Syndergaard, you've still got guys like Carreno, Perez, McGuire, Jenkins, Wojciechowski, Comer and 5 or 6 other top picks in this year's draft, plus several others I haven't mentioned.  It's quite a collection.  It seems almost every week there's another new guy to watch.  I was reading today that LV manager Marty Brown is really high on Chad Beck as a big leaguer, which kind of surprised me.  Of course a lot will fall by the wayside, but with that many, you've got to think they're going to end up with quite a few excellent big leaguers.   Great trading leverage, too.

Not just found dead, but pretty clearly a suicide, and one related to the Orioles' recent woes. Unutterably sad.

I used to really like watching Flanagan pitch. There was something about the guy that was just terrific to take in. I don't know if the stats bear this out but I was confident of a W when he was on the mound for the Jays and feared an L when he played for the Orioles.  I was sad to hear of his passing.

OMG, for real?!!?

That's . . . heartbreaking.

I mean i always liked the guy, and would mourn him in any case but....just damn.

It used to be tough to come up with 7 or 8 that looked really good, but now, if you take a top 8 of say...

I wonder if you made up a Top 20 prospect list consisiting only of pitchers if it wouldn't rank in the top half of all MLB farm systems?

Jake Anderson is really announcing his presence with authoriteh!

12/27 with 4 XBH in 7 games. With only 3 games left in the GCL and nine in Vancouver, I wonder if they might not give him a taste out west? Probably not. It is just a weeks worth of games.

Nick Purdy went with Acre to Bluefield - give them help for the playoffs  (which now that I think of it gives them potential for nine games left too) I assume. Purdy had 7 BB and 38 K in 25 IP and you all know about Acre

Sobo took the collar for NH and everyone else had at least two hits - that's got to feel sucky.

Hech broke his mini-slump by going 2/5 - Drabek gave up one run over 6.2 IP but the periphrials were stlll shaky (8 hits, 3 BB, 2 K)

I still marvel that there is at least one legit exciting SP throwing every night somewhere on the farm. If you count McGowan and Cecil, you have to go back to June 17 - opening night in Vancouver, to find a night when every game was started by an uninteresting guy.

TamRa, I believe the kids name is Arce. He's only 5'9", but those were impressive power numbers he put up in the GCL. Seems to have a bit of patience too, with 38 BB's and an OBP of .437.

....Not just found dead, but pretty clearly a suicide, and one related to the Orioles' recent woes....

I would very much hesitate to attribute any suicide to any specific cause.  Suicide is a very complex phenomenon, with multiple causes, some of which can be traced back decades to childhood.  Even when someone leaves a suicide note, it can't be interpreted as the full story.
