Two games were rained out, while one affiliate won their rubber match in a nailbiter and another was forced into a decisive game 3.

Reading at New Hampshire - PPD

Both Eastern League playoff games were rained out.

Dunedin 1 at Daytona 3

Ryan Tepera was fine, though this evening it wasn't quite enough. Tepera gave up 3 runs, all earned, in 6.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. Dunedin scored in the 5th to make it 2-1 Daytona, but that would be as close as they got, as they were unable to capitalize on a bases loaded 1 out situation in the 8th. Bright spot: Matt Wright finished things up perfectly, striking out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Despite garnering one more hit and one more walk than Daytona, Dunedin couldn't string anything together, picking up a solo run thanks to Ryan Goins, who singled and doubled. Justin Jackson singled and walked, and that's about it.

Lansing at Dayton - PPD

Games in Dayton and Fort Wayne were both rained out.

Vancouver 5 at Eugene 4

Down 5-3 in the 9th, Eugene loaded the bases with no one out, and scored a run and re-loaded them with one away. Could Vancouver get out of it? Yes, as it turns out, and despite some chewed nails the Canadians are headed to the Northwest League Championship. Vancouver jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Roan Salas and Balbino Fuenmayor both stroked two out singles in the first to plate one and two, while Kevin Pillar, (who singled and scored in the first,) doubled in the 4th run in the second, and Pierce Rankin doubled in another in the 3rd. The C's would need those extra runs in a bad way. Starter Aaron Sanchez was near unhittable for the C's, allowing only one hit in going 4.2 innings. He walked 4 and whiffed 8, though three walks came in the first, followed by him setting down 12 straight, followed by a double and another walk to chase him, though those runs didn't cash. The relievers were not as good however, as Phillip Brua, Bryan Longpre and Drew Permison allowed 2, 1 and 1 runs respectively. Permison was the source of the tension in this one, as after a perfect 8th he allowed two walks and a single to load the bases with none out in the 9th. An RBI groundout and IBB followed, after which Permison doubled down and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. Kevin Pillar was 2 for 5 with a double, while Shane Opitz and Matt Newman both doubled and walked. Congrats team!

3 Stars!
3rd Star! Kevin Pillar 2/5, 2B, RBI, R
2nd Star! Ryan Goins, 2/4, 2B, RBI
1st Star! Aaron Sanchez 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

Its too bad A Sanchez did not qualify for the win.

Why is that?
BalzacChieftain - Thursday, September 08 2011 @ 02:41 PM EDT (#243449) #
Pretty obvious. Sanchez doesn't have a hope in hell of making the majors if he doesn't show he's a winner.

He better find a way to start driving in some RBI's or he is never going to amount to anything

Sean Nolin is off to a terrific start for the Luggies, including six straight strikeouts.

Which of these is the better / more promising year in AA?

2010 SP K.Drabek (22): 162.0ip, 7.3k/9, 1.9k/bb, 0.7hr/9, 1.20whip, 2.94era, 3.87fip
2011 SP C.Jenkins (23): 100.1ip, 6.6k/9, 2.7k/bb, 0.7hr/9, 1.20whip, 4.13era, 3.63fip
Dave Rutt - Thursday, September 08 2011 @ 08:08 PM EDT (#243463) #
Huh? Drabek had more strikeouts, fewer walks, in more innings, at a younger age. Even then, his prospect ranking seemed to be based more on stuff than results. I do think Jenkins is underrated by some, but I don't think he's anywhere near what Drabek was at that time.
uglyone - Thursday, September 08 2011 @ 08:11 PM EDT (#243464) #
I think you mistook that K/BB for BB/9. Jenkins gives up many fewer walks.

To be clearer:

2010 Drabek (22): 7.3k/9, 3.8bb/9, 1.9k/bb
2011 Jenkins (23): 6.6k/9, 2.4bb/9, 2.7k/bb

Dave Rutt - Thursday, September 08 2011 @ 08:19 PM EDT (#243465) #
Yep, that's exactly what I did. It did seem fishy that Drabek had better control than Jenkins... Anyway, it's always a little iffy to compare prospects 1 to 1 and conclude that one is as promising as the other based strictly on the numbers (not that you did that). Jenkins' stats taken on their own, without comparison to Drabek's, are decent but not top prospect-worthy.
uglyone - Thursday, September 08 2011 @ 08:23 PM EDT (#243466) #
Just thought it was an interesting comparison. I think I like Jenkins' line better, which surprised me...though being a year older is a significant advantage.

But as for "stuff", Jenkins had enough "stuff" to get drafted 20th overall (Drabek got picked 18th), so it's not like he's got nothing in the arsenal.

Problem is i'm not sure whether this tells me about Jenkins being underrated, or whether it tells me that Drabek was way overrated.

On a related note....not to jinx him...but Jenkins is throwing a gem in game 1 of the AA playoffs tonight. So far:

Jenkins: 5.0ip, 1h, 0xbh, 0r, 1bb, 8k

No jinx. 7.0 IP, 4 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 0 R, 0 ER. Bullpen kept it scoreless, 2-0 win.

Woj wasn't so lucky, pitching 5 scoreless and then having the bullpen (well, Aaron Loup) explode. Dunedin loses 4-3.

And Lansing and Nolin lose 7-3. Nolin's line looks kind of odd: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, all earned. 6 K, 2 BB, 0 HR. The bullpen didn't help after that, but Lansing would have lost even with a perfect bullpen.

Nolin's line looks kind of odd: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, all earned. 6 K, 2 BB, 0 HR.

Nolin was rolling through the first 4 - those six K's were on consecutive batters.

The only run before the fifth was an inning that should have been over as Nolin had apparently picked off Hamilton but the Ump blew the call (or so the 'Nuts side of the story would go)

Then in the fifth, a series of unfortunate events.

Dayton Bottom of the 5th
  • David Vidal grounds out sharply, second baseman Matt Nuzzo to first baseman K. C. Hobson.
  • Tucker Barnhart walks.
  • Juan Duran singles on a sharp ground ball to right fielder Jonathan Jones, deflected by second baseman Matt Nuzzo. Tucker Barnhart to 3rd.
  • Jefry Sierra doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Jake Marisnick. Tucker Barnhart scores. Juan Duran scores.
  • Theo Bowe reaches on fielding error by first baseman K. C. Hobson. Jefry Sierra to 3rd.
  • Billy Hamilton singles on a line drive to center fielder Jake Marisnick, deflected by pitcher Sean Nolin. Jefry Sierra scores. Theo Bowe out at 3rd on the throw, center fielder Jake Marisnick to third baseman Oliver Dominguez.
  • Pitcher Change: Brandon Berl replaces Sean Nolin.
  • Lansing Lugnuts pitcher Sean Nolin left the game due to an injured hand.
  • With Ronald Torreyes batting, Billy Hamilton caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Carlos Perez to second baseman Matt Nuzzo.

Hey, Perez caught the Flash stealing, pretty cool.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did pick Hamilton off.  He gets a very large lead and if you were to look through all the game logs, I think you would find he gets picked off a fair amount or he probably would have stolen 150 bases this year.  The kid is very slightly built, but he is very, very quick.  He stole a base this season in Lansing where he was half way to second before it left the pitchers hand.

The game tonight and if necessary tomorrow will be in Lansing which could help out a little bit.  If they can't keep Hamilton off base though, they are going to be in trouble.  Of the three other teams in the Eastern Division playoffs with Lansing, they match up with Dayton the worst.

ugluone, Dave Rutt & Others,

I think that is a great question by uglyone and very informative back & forth responses between Dave & uglyone.

Let me add that Drabek was a HS pick & Jenkins a university pick, so more pro experience for Drabek before AA. It may not mean much.

I think a very big comparison (if my facts are correct) between the 2 is that 1 is a high strike out pitcher and the other has great GB skills. Speaking in general about any pitcher, is that not a significant comparison.

What I loved about Camp last year & the 1st half of this year was how often he came in with a runner on 1st & maybe runners on 2nd & 3rd and got that GB double play. Maybe Camp is worn down now, he has been used a lot by the Jays in the last few years.
If anyone can think of other factors, I am certainly interested. Maybe next year we can do one on N Molina.
