Three teams played last night and they scored 28 runs, had 42 hits and there was a total of 51 runs scored in the three games.  Las Vegas had 19 hits and lost.   New Hampshire were rained out.  Travis 'd'Arnaud continued his hot streak as did Jon Talley.  Adam Lind and Yan Gomes had some hits and so did Vladimir Guerrero.   KC Hobson keyed a big comeback for Lansing.

I reached out to the Jays concerning Mitchell Taylor and I have been told he retired last spring. Obviously Taylor had some issues both during last season and in the off-season. The Jays wouldn't comment on specifics but they say Taylor is not on any roster at this time and has been placed on the voluntarily retired list.

Las Vegas 10  Tucson 11

Anthony Gose tripled to lead off the game and scored the 51's first run. In the second inning he singled in the second run, stole 2nd, stole 3rd and scored on an Adam Lind single.   That was it for Gose in the excitement department, he struck out in his next three at-bats.

Yohan Pino appears to be one of those pitchers who is good enough for AA but not quite good enough for AAA. Pino was just promoted from New Hampshire and gave up four runs in his first two innings.  He did settle down and finished five with just the four runs allowed.

Danny Perales homered in the third to tie the game and Travis d'Arnaud homered in the fourth to put Las Vegas ahead.  But it was the fifth inning that saw a lot of action.  Las Vegas scored five runs, one on a d'Arnaud double and four on a grand slam by Yan Gomes.  That six run lead lasted a half inning.  Tim Redding came into the game in the sixth and gave up six runs, including back to back home runs.  Things calmed down after that but in the eighth Jedd Gyorko homered off Bobby Korecky and that was it.

Las Vegas out hit Tuscon 19-14 and lost.  Lind, d'Arnaud and Perales each had three hits.

New Britain at New Hampshire - Postponed

Lakeland 3 Dunedin 8

Dunedin scored five runs in the fifth to break up a scoreless game. Vladdy started it with a home run. That might have startled the pitcher because it was followed by four straight singles off the bats of Kevin Nolan, Jon Talley, Marcus Knecht and Ryan Schimpf. A couple of sac flys and a wild pitch later and the Jays led 5-0. John Stilson immediately gave up a couple of runs to tighten the game. But Talley drove in a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to stretch the lead. Vladdy also doubled in a run and finished the night 3-5.

Talley was 3-3 with two walks. Talley is having a bit of a breakout year at age 23. His OPS is 900 which is great in the FSL. You really have to hit to make it as a first baseman but Talley is opening some eyes. Gabe Jacobo also had two hits and is hitting .333.

John Stilson started and went five innings for the win. He gave up two runs on four hits. So far this season Stilson has been reasonably good. He has given up a hit per innings and his K/9IP rate is around 8.

Lake County 9 Lansing 10

David Rollins didn't have either luck or good results and was gone in the second inning having given up five runs. Eric Brown followed and gave up two more in the third and Lansing trailed 7-3. But the Luggies picked up a pair in the third and five in the fourth to lead 10-7. Lake County picked up a pair in the eighth to make it a nail-biter but Ajay Meyer recorded a 1-2-3 ninth. The Lugnuts had 12 hits, spread relatively evenly through the order. KC Hobson had a big home run in the five run fourth. Chris Hawkins had just one hit but it was a triple. The two hit guys were Carlos Perez, Andy Burns, Shane Opitz and Kevin Pillar.

3 Stars (Vladdy ineligible version):

3rd Star:  KC Hobson

2nd Star: Travis d'Arnaud

1st Star: Jon Talley

A note in the Toronto Sun indicates that Hech is spending a few days getting his citizenship situation resolved -likely a reason he was not called up & if it gets resolved by the Boston series (it should) & either Johnson/Escobar don't improve, then I think we'll see a DL & Hech up with the big club
92-93 - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 10:44 AM EDT (#257354) #

It's been more than 2 years since the Jays signed Hechavarria, and his immigration/visa/citizenship issues still aren't resolved? And it's an issue that can possibly be cleared up by the Boston series (and not a bureaucratic issue)? That's some pretty poor management by his agent, the team, or both. Get er done.

MatO - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 10:57 AM EDT (#257355) #

I believe those would be US citizenship/immigration issues.  I suspect he needs to spend a certain period of time in the US to clear those issues up.  In other words, he needs to put in the time.  Lind's Canadian wife had similar problem I think.  That's why she stayed in Florida when the Jays came north at the end of spring training

Gerry - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 10:58 AM EDT (#257356) #
I guess I have less faith in anyone's ability to influence US Immigration than 92-93 does.  Good luck with that.
85bluejay - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 11:04 AM EDT (#257357) #
I believe you have to put in a certain amount of time without leaving the US for citizenship  & Hech may only now be qualifying - I remember that White Sox  SS Ramirez had to miss playing in Toronto in his rookie year because he was still short of accumulating enough time for his citizenship - I don't think there is fault to be assigned - though this is unlikely to placate some.

Going from a Cuban defector to a Mexican resident to American minor-leaguer to Canadian major leaguer probably requires quite a bit of paperwork.

It's reasonable to assume that the Jays' high priced lawyers are incompetent when it comes to immigration law as well, given our great expertise in the legalities here.
85bluejay - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 11:18 AM EDT (#257361) #

Thanks Gerry for the Mitchell Taylor update - that's disappointing - it's the 2nd off the field hit the 2010 draft has taken - Mims & now Taylor , add the 7th rounder who didn't sign and that's 3 wasted picks in the top 10 rds. - takes some shine off that draft. Also, the Jays might be more reluctant to take guys with off the field issues.

Gerry,if Taylor decides to return , does he then have to serve the 50 games or are the games he's currently missing count? I guess that perhaps depends on if he has offically retired ala Manny.

Gerry - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 11:29 AM EDT (#257362) #
The Jays told me he retired before the season, once he heard of the suspension, so he has not served his 50 games.   I would think that if he decided to return his suspension might be negotiated, like Manny, to 25 games or something like that.

Didn't you hear? Since payroll parameters were instituted, X-Copper has been handling legal affairs.

I made it pretty clear that my comment was based on the fact that Hechavarria could possibly be ready by Friday, but okay.

And X-Copper is fantastic.

After a weak first month, D'Arnaud seems to be well on his way to being a well over 1.000ops player in Vegas as a rookie - the kind of numbers that Snider and Lawrie and thames put up as rookies (Snider and Lawrie at 21, Thames at 24, D'Arnaud at 23).....which is damn exciting for a Catcher.

I've never been a huge D'Arnaud fan, as while he looks like a good all-around player he didn't seem to have any standout skills to me.....but his year last year was legitimately huge, and it seems like he's setting up to have just as huge a year this year in AAA....and if he keeps it up much longer, I'm jumping fulltime on the D'Arnaud-is-our-future bandwagon.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#257376) #

Speaking of catchers I was surprised to see that Matt Wieters is down to a .231 hitter now.  In April the story was how Wieters had finally arrived as an elite player.  It goes to show how hard it is to be a great hitter as a catcher.  I think it also supports the idea that JPA does have a decent trade value.

I was thinking of d'Arnaud and I am going to throw a Carlos Ruiz offensive comp on him.  d'Arnaud is not as big as JPA, and he has a good solid catchers body, like Ruiz.  He also has a good line drive stroke, even though I know he has lots of homers in Vegas.  d'Arnaud's size and his batting style remind me of Ruiz.  If he can hit like Ruiz he will be very valuable.

I touched on this in the Advance Scout, but I think a lot of that is BABIP driven - he has a .246 BABIP, 50 points lower than his career average. Wieters is walking at a career high rate of 9.8% of the time and has set and re-set career highs in isoP in 2011 and now this year. If his BABIP inches up, watch out.

Anders - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#257380) #
Also, FWIW, my back of the envelope calculations for d'Arnaud's last 14 games: .383/422/.917 with 5 doubles and 9 home runs.
greenfrog - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 01:21 PM EDT (#257381) #
I like the Ruiz comp, although I see he didn't make the majors until he was 27. D'Arnaud will presumably benefit from starting his MLB career much earlier.
uglyone - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 01:29 PM EDT (#257383) #
Thing about Wieters is that his BABIP has been trending down his whole career (.356, .287, .276, .246), just as his ISO has been trending up (.124, .128, .188, .206). Wouldn't be surprised if there was some cause and effect there.

D'Arnaud comparisons is an interesting question. None spring to mind right away for me, but I'm guessing his AA/AAA performance ranks right up there with some dang good ones.
neurolaw - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#257384) #
Uglyone, I agree his performance over the last 2 seasons makes me very excited. I thought Gerry's comparison to Ruiz was interesting. But like you I can't think of a comparison.

Keith Law rated him as the 4th best prospect in his updated prospect rankings. Kevin Goldstein tweeted last week that he is the best catching prospect in baseball. Can't wait to see what he can do when he gets up here.

Based on the stuff I have read about him, I think he has the skills to be a good number 2 hitter. Is that a fair assessment Gerry?
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#257385) #
Javy Lopez might be a good comp for d'Arnaud.
whiterasta80 - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 04:01 PM EDT (#257390) #
A non-juicing Lopez, Brian McCann, or (optimistically) Ivan Rodriguez without the roids or the arm.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#257391) #
McCann had very fine plate control from the time of his arrival in the majors at age 21.  Pudge's primary calling card was his glove.  FWIW, at age 23, Mike Piazza put up a .341/.405/.564 line in Alberquerque, and his minor league career was really no better than d'Arnaud's has been.  One never knows.

Anyways, there is a good article by The Toronto's Sun Bob Elliott about Drew Hutchison and some of the pitchers down in New Hampshire.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#257397) #

Thanks for the link #2JB.  Elliott always talks to scouts, here are his notes on the Jays top 5 from the link:

POWER RANKINGS

How an opposing evaluator rates the Jays' top prospects:

1. Travis d'Arnaud (.313 average, 11 homers, 31 RBIs in 43 games, .949 OPS at Vegas).

"I like the way he's adjusted to facing triple-A pitching and he's still staying solid behind the plate."

2. Anthony Gose (.293, three, 24, in 50 games, .791 at Vegas).

"He started slowly, but he's progressing. He might be one of the youngest in the league facing former big-league arms, crafty veterans and he's still hitting, still stealing bases (21). Impressive."

3. Adeiny Hechavarria (.316, four, 34 in 49 games, .825 at Vegas).

"He has 14 doubles, I saw a young Omar Vizquel, Hechavarria might be the best shortstop I've ever seen, better than Jimmy Rollins or Rey Ordonez."

4. Mike McDade (.324, nine, 29 in 48 games, .911 OPS at N.H.)

"He has almost as many walks this year (19) that he had in 125 games last season (28). He's the best defensive first baseman in their organization, one of the best in the minors. He's big (6-foot-1, 250 lbs.) but he's a hard worker from what I've seen."

5. Jake Marisnick (.258, three, 25 in 45 game, .758 OPS at Dunedin).

"He's going to be a great major-leaguer, he has all the attributes. Some day they are going to have Colby Rasmus, Anthony Gose and Moises Sierra in the outfield, with this guy knocking on the door."

According to John Lott, AA says all of Hech's paperwork is finalized and they can call him up whenever they want.
China fan - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 05:23 PM EDT (#257400) #
I've posted a longer comment on Hech's paperwork on the other thread, but just to clarify what was said above: Hech has not finalized ALL of his citizenship-related paperwork. What he's apparently finalized is the paperwork that he needs for traveling to Toronto. That might not mean US citizenship -- it might just mean "landed resident" status or whatever.

Sorry a double post here but I forgot this nugget of twitter info for those following the draft this year:

Blue Jays worked out draft-eligible players Tuesday. Impressed with catcher Stryker Trahan out of Louisiana High School. Keep eye on him.

Gracey can throw 93-94? Always thought he was a high 80's guy. Makes him a little more interesting.

That sucks about Taylor, I thought he was an exciting sleeper.

The first two plays of the Lansing game? Ground balls to Pierre at third, he made them both.

Eric Thames in the LV lineup tonight. Still no Hech though.
PeteMoss - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 11:00 PM EDT (#257431) #
Laffey was sent down after the game I see... would have to think Hech is coming up if he can.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 11:11 PM EDT (#257432) #
Why Hech? Escobar seemed fine tonight and Jonhson should be OK too after two days off. The call-up will most likely be an outfielder.

Jenkins pulled after 4 innings and 58 pitches. Any news?
Gerry - Thursday, May 31 2012 @ 08:59 AM EDT (#257441) #
The news on Jenkins is that he just came off the DL and has a limited pitch count.  Either that or he got a message from the Man In White.
jgadfly - Thursday, May 31 2012 @ 01:12 PM EDT (#257482) #

Thanks Gerry,  for the allbeit disappointing update on Taylor ... 19 years old, an almost guaranteed multi-million dollar career, talent and upside and with his last pitch, he throws it all away ... ahh, the pressurized vagueries of youth and pitching prospects .

The Jays should hire the Garfoose and a sports psychology guy and assign them to a few conversational meetings with the kid ... one of the plusses of having a team in Lansing and Vancouver should be access to their universities' Sports Psychology Departments to help with easing their youthful prospects into their chosen careers ...

92-93 - Thursday, May 31 2012 @ 01:50 PM EDT (#257489) #
The Blue Jays should keep their prospects as far away from Dirk Hayhurst as possible.
uglyone - Thursday, May 31 2012 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#257493) #
I think I might have found a D'Arnaud comparison that I kind of like - 6'2"/200ishlbs, high average, mediocre BB%, good power, weak throwing arm.....V-Mart.

AAA

V.Martinez (24): 314pa, 8.3bb%, 10.2k%, .146iso, .328avg, .395obp, .474slg, .869ops (IL)
T.D'Arnaud (23): 203pa, 7.9bb%, 16.7k%, .277iso, .321avg, .379obp, .598slg, .977ops (PCL)

AA

V.Martinez (23): 515pa, 11.2bb%, 12.0k%, .240iso, .336avg, .417obp, .576slg, .993ops
T.D'Arnaud (22): 466pa, 7.1bb%, 21.5k%, .231iso, .311avg, .371obp, .542slg, .913ops

A+

V.Martinez (21-22): 569pa, 8.8bb%, 11.4k%, .147iso, .310avg, .380, .457slg, .837ops
T.D'Arnaud (21-21): 292pa, 6.8bb%, 21.6k%, .152iso, .259avg, .315obp, .411slg, .726ops

though to be honest, re-looking at Travis's stats for these comparisons I remember why I'm still a bit skeptical about him turning into a stud - he's BB/K rates aren't great, and I'm not sold on him having great power, either.
neurolaw - Thursday, May 31 2012 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#257497) #
But uglyone you could also say that there is clear improvement as he has moved up to a tougher level each year. He has cut his K% by 5% and improved his power at each level.

Personally I am excited to see him. When was the last time the Jays had the best catching prospect in baseball?
